ABOUT US:
AI NEEDS A NEW INFRASTRUCTURE LAYER. WE'RE BUILDING IT AT MODAL.
Every era of computing brought new workloads that previous infrastructure couldn't support: mainframes, databases, and the cloud. Each time, the company that rebuilt the layer underneath defined the decade. AI is no different, except it touches everything instead of one slice, and the window to build the layer underneath it is open right now.
Our customers include category-defining companies like Ramp https://modal.com/blog/how-ramp-built-a-full-context-background-coding-agent-on-modal, Cognition, DoorDash, and Suno. They rely on Modal for instant GPU access, sub-second container starts, and native storage, so it's simple to serve low-latency inference, fine-tune models, and access production-ready sandboxes at scale.
We've passed $1B in annualized run rate, up 15x from a year ago. In October 2026 we raised a $750M Series D led by Accel at a $15.75B valuation.
Our team includes creators of popular open-source projects (e.g.,Seaborn https://github.com/mwaskom/seaborn,Luigi https://github.com/spotify/luigi), academic researchers, international olympiad medalists, and experienced engineering and product leaders with decades of experience.
THE ROLE:
Modal's LLM inference platform delivers frontier performance https://modal.com/blog/kimi-k3-by-moonshot-now-available-on-modal for open-source models with best-in-class elasticity and developer experience, made in part possible by our custom runtime with GPU memory snapshots https://modal.com/blog/gpu-mem-snapshots and multi-cloud substrate https://modal.com/blog/resource-solver.
We're looking for a leader to own the direction and execution of this platform to continue to establish us as the clear market leader, working closely with customers like Cognition, Doordash, Ramp, and many more. You'll be leading a group of highly talented engineers working on our market-leading LLM inference offering, spanning the serving stack, routing infrastructure, internal agentic optimization platform, and the user-facing product surface area.
This is a hands-on leadership role — expect to split your time between technical contribution, product shaping and people management depending on what the team needs. You'll set direction, remove blockers, and build a strong engineering culture as your team tackles hard problems in distributed computing, frontier inference serving, and performance optimization.
WHAT YOU'LL WORK ON:
Team
- Recruit, hire, and grow a high-performing team of engineers; run regular 1:1s focused on coaching, feedback, and career growth
- Set clear performance expectations, hold a high bar, and build an environment where engineers do their best work
- Foster a culture of ownership, accountability, customer obsession, and continuous improvement
Technical and Product Direction
- Drive technical and product decisions through design reviews, code reviews, and architectural discussions
- Lead our efforts working with customers with novel or frontier workloads so they can be successful running on Modal
- Translate learnings from frontier customers into a roadmap for our internal optimization platform and user-facing product, so that gains from optimization and research efforts are accessible to all of our users
- Establish standards for reliability and product excellence; ensure the team owns projects end-to-end, from spec through production
Cross-Functional Leadership
- Partner with business operations and compute strategy on continuing to develop our strategy for compute purchases across a variety of accelerators
- Collaborate with GTM on product launches, positioning, and improving win rates for inference opportunities
- Help guide the roadmap for teams building the infrastructure platform underlying inference, as well as adjacent product teams
YOU MAY BE A FIT IF:
- You have 10+ years of industry experience, including 3+ years in a leadership role
- You have a track record of building high-performance systems at scale
- You have a strong background in cloud infrastructure
- You have deep knowledge of low-level OS foundations (Linux kernel, file systems, containers, etc.)
NICE-TO-HAVE:
- Experience working with LLM inference in production
- Familiarity with underlying concepts like engines, kernels, routing, KV cache management, and speculative decoding

✨ ONE PLATFORM, A WHOLE WORLD OF OPPORTUNITY
The best jobs have always clustered in a handful of the world's wealthiest cities. But talent is everywhere. Oyster set out to close that gap - building a global employment platform that lets companies hire, pay, and care for brilliant people anywhere.
We're proof that a high-performing culture doesn't need an office. Distributed across 60+ countries since 2020, we've built something the industry keeps noticing:
- Ranked #10 of 250 on TIME and Statista's 2026 list of America's Top WorkTech Companies https://www.oysterhr.com/library/oyster-hr-named-10-of-americas-top-worktech-companies-of-2026-by-time
- Named one of America's Greatest Startup Workplaces 2026 https://www.oysterhr.com/library/oyster-2026-newsweek-award by Newsweek
- A G2 Spring 2026 Leader https://www.oysterhr.com/library/oyster-named-best-roi-for-any-global-employment-platform-for-g2-spring-2026 across Employer of Record, Global Employment, Multi-country Payroll, and HR Compliance
- The only B Corp-certified global employment platform ~ independently verified since 2023
Two of those rankings measured our business impact from the outside. One measured how our own people feel about working here. They landed in the same place ~ because at Oyster, culture and performance aren't separate conversations. They're the same one.
And we're just getting started. If you want to do the best work of your career alongside people who care as much as you do, we'd love for you to apply.
👩💻 THE ROLE
Location: While this position is posted in a specific location, all of Oyster’s positions are fully remote and you can work from home. Forever. To create the best experience for our new hire, this role requires you to be based within UTC−6 to UTC+3.
Oyster’s Data Engineering team is building the foundational AI platform layer that will enable teams across Oyster to develop, deploy, and operate secure, production-grade AI capabilities. As a Senior Data Engineer focused on AI Platform, you’ll work at the intersection of data engineering, platform engineering, and applied AI. You’ll build the data pipelines, services, integrations, and reusable platform capabilities that power AI use cases across Oyster.
You’ll leverage Oyster’s existing AWS and Snowflake data platform to make enterprise data accessible, reliable, secure, and useful for AI, supporting capabilities such as LLMs, RAG, embeddings, vector search, AI agents, tool calling, and AI workflows.
This is not a traditional data engineering role focused primarily on analytics pipelines or reporting. You’ll help define and build the data and platform foundations that let AI systems move from experimentation to reliable production, working closely with Engineering, Product, IT, and other teams across Oyster.
Key Responsibilities
- Design and build data pipelines and platform capabilities that support AI applications, knowledge systems, and AI workflows.
- Build and maintain data and knowledge pipelines for ingestion, transformation, chunking, embeddings, retrieval, vector search, metadata, and knowledge management.
- Develop secure, reusable ways for AI systems to access enterprise data and systems using APIs, MCP, tool calling, and similar patterns.
- Build reusable services, libraries, frameworks, and developer tooling that make it easier for engineering teams to build and productionize AI capabilities.
- Apply strong data engineering practices around data modeling, data quality, lineage, access, reliability, and governance to AI-related data and systems.
- Help establish patterns for AI deployment, observability, evaluation, and lifecycle management, including quality, latency, reliability, security, and cost.
- Partner with engineers and stakeholders to take AI use cases from prototype to production, ensuring the underlying data and infrastructure are scalable and maintainable.
- Ensure AI platform capabilities meet Oyster’s security, privacy, access control, and data governance requirements.
- Evaluate emerging AI and data technologies and determine where they can create meaningful value for Oyster.
Core Requirements
- 5+ years of experience in data engineering, platform engineering, backend engineering, ML engineering, or a related discipline, with experience building and operating production systems.
- Strong Python and SQL skills.
- Strong data engineering fundamentals, including data pipelines, data modeling, data quality, orchestration, and secure data access.
- Experience with Snowflake, Databricks, or comparable modern data platforms, and tools such as dbt, Airflow, or similar.
- Hands-on experience building or supporting production systems using LLMs / generative AI.
- Practical experience with one or more of RAG, embeddings, vector search, tool/function calling, AI agents, or enterprise knowledge systems.
- Experience building data or platform capabilities that are reusable across teams, rather than only developing one-off solutions.
- Experience taking systems from experimentation to reliable production, including considerations around scalability, observability, performance, and maintainability.
- Solid understanding of security, authentication/authorization, privacy, and data governance, particularly in the context of enterprise data.
- Strong communicator who can work across Engineering, Product, and IT to turn ambiguous AI and data problems into practical engineering solutions.
Bonus
- Experience with AWS Bedrock or other managed foundation-model platforms.
- Hands-on experience with MCP (Model Context Protocol) or similar approaches for connecting AI systems to enterprise tools and data.
- Experience with LLM evaluation, observability, monitoring, or AI quality.
- Experience with LangChain, LangGraph, or similar frameworks.
- Experience with vector databases or search technologies.
- Experience implementing AI security, governance, or responsible AI practices.
- Experience building internal developer platforms, SDKs, APIs, or reusable infrastructure for engineering teams.
- Experience working across data engineering and AI/ML platform environments.
YOU'LL ALSO NEED
- A reliable home internet connection (or be able to get one).
- Fluent English language skills.

An overview of this role
As a Technical Program Manager in GitLab’s R&D organization, you’ll lead cross functional initiatives that help teams deliver reliably, efficiently, and at scale. You’ll own programs that cut across multiple product stages and engineering teams, turning strategic priorities into clear plans, aligning stakeholders, and driving progress in an all-remote, asynchronous environment. You’ll use GitLab issues, epics, and handbook-first documentation to create visibility, remove blockers, and keep complex work moving across time zones, while partnering closely with Engineering Leadership at all levels. In your first year, you’ll be expected to independently run a portfolio of programs from scoping through delivery and retrospectives, and to improve how R&D programs operate by contributing to and evolving Technical Program Management best practices.
What you’ll do
Lead 1–3 strategic technical programs at a time spanning multiple engineering teams and product stages, ensuring clear scope, priorities, and outcomes.
Partner with engineering leaders and other key stakeholders to align on goals, timelines, and delivery milestones for cross functional initiatives.
Own end-to-end program planning and execution, from initial discovery and scoping through delivery, measurement, and retrospectives.
Drive asynchronous collaboration using GitLab issues, epics, and handbook updates so globally distributed teams stay aligned and informed.
Identify risks and blockers early, coordinate resolution across teams, and escalate when needed to maintain momentum.
Facilitate working group meetings and async discussions to support decision-making, surface tradeoffs, and keep programs on track.
Track and communicate program health through metrics, dashboards, and regular status updates to provide visibility to the Engineering Division and partners.
Contribute to evolving Technical Program Management practices by documenting processes, sharing learnings, and improving how R&D programs run across GitLab.
What you’ll bring
Experience in technical program management, project management, software engineering, or similar technical roles.
Understanding of the software development lifecycle and Agile ways of working, including how engineering teams plan, build, and ship.
Skill in coordinating programs across multiple engineering teams or departments, aligning stakeholders on goals, timelines, and milestones.
Strong written communication skills for asynchronous, documentation-first collaboration in a fully remote environment.
Ability to work independently in a distributed setting, set priorities, and make progress with minimal supervision.
Comfortable navigating ambiguity, identifying blockers, and proposing practical solutions to keep programs moving.
Familiarity with DevOps practices, CI/CD pipelines, or platforms like GitLab, with interest in deepening this knowledge over time.
Openness to learning, iterating based on feedback, and applying transferable skills from varied backgrounds to technical program management.
About the team
You’ll join the R&D organization as part of the Technical Program Management function, a small, cross-functional team that leads high-impact programs spanning multiple product stages and departments. The team focuses on driving clarity, alignment, and predictable delivery for complex initiatives that touch many parts of GitLab, using a handbook-first, asynchronous way of working with stakeholders across regions and time zones. You’ll collaborate closely with engineering leaders and partners in other functions to improve how programs are planned, executed, and communicated, helping evolve shared practices, templates, and tooling for program governance across R&D.

Solid understanding of liquidity dynamics and how institutional crypto markets actually work. Prior hands-on experience managing fee schedules or designing incentive programs (MM/MT, VIP tiers, rebates) is a strong plus.
Proven experience of leading strategic business reviews, facilitating on-site requirement discovery, and converting client feedback into prioritized product initiatives. Strong track record of partnering with Sales, BD, and Relationship Management teams in a B2B institutional setting.

Able to communicate complex strategies and trade-offs with clarity and influence, producing high-quality strategy documents, product plans, roadmaps, and executive-level presentations. Demonstrated effectiveness leading and influencing globally distributed teams across time zones and diverse cultural contexts.
Hands-on experience leveraging AI tools for market research and product operations. Building automated workflows, using AI for data analysis, or prototyping AI-powered features.

What You’ll Be Doing
Lead global finance operations. Accounting and reporting, month end close, financial controls, regulatory reporting, local audit, and regulatory reporting all sit under you. You'll lead a team of 30+ professionals across 15 countries and be accountable for the quality, timeliness, and defensibility of everything that comes out of it.
Partner with the regional C-suite on what's next. Business strategy, exchange listings, infrastructure investment, and M&A — you'll be in the room, and you'll be the one putting numbers behind the options. Capital planning and investor relations sit with you, as do external partnerships that carry a financial dimension.
Price the decisions before they're made. New products, new markets, new licenses. Each one gets a financial evaluation from your team — unit economics, capital requirements, tax and regulatory cost, downside cases. Leadership should be able to trust that analysis without re-running it.
Tighten controls and risk frameworks across crypto and fiat. This is the part most finance leaders haven't done before. Internal controls, SOX readiness, audit, and global regulatory obligations have to work across digital-asset custody and movement as well as conventional banking flows. You'll build the frameworks that hold up in both worlds.
Own external relationships. Regulators, banking partners, payment providers. These relationships determine what the business can and can't do in a given market, and they need a senior finance voice who regulators and bank credit committees take seriously.
Standardize the plumbing. Global finance policies, a single reporting architecture, consistent close and consolidation processes.
Sit on leadership committees at both the global and local entity level, including boards and governance bodies where a licensed entity requires it.
Maintain up-to-date knowledge of regional financial regulations and cryptocurrency market developments.
What We Look For In You
Degree in Finance, Accounting, Economics, or a related field
Deep technical foundation in IFRS and US GAAP. CPA, ACCA, CA or equivalent certifcation
15+ years of progressive financial leadership experience, preferably in a cryptocurrency exchange, fintech, or financial services company.
Strong understanding of cryptocurrency markets, blockchain technology, and digital asset accounting.
Expertise in financial regulations of various global jurisdictions (e.g., NYDFS, MAS, VARA, MiCA, FCA).
Proven experience with financial systems (e.g., Oracle NetSuite) and automation tools.
Strong analytical, strategic, and leadership skills with the ability to influence at all levels.
Excellent communication skills and ability to operate in a fast-paced, dynamic environment.
Experience managing multi-currency operations and intercompany transactions.
Ability to lead and develop teams in multiple jurisdictions and work across different time zones.

Your Purpose
At Bitso, the Software Engineer on the Nexus Squad owns the reliability, scalability, and evolution of our mission-critical pay-in and pay-out systems, the financial backbone that moves billions of dollars worldwide.
You will design and deliver event-driven, high-throughput solutions that ensure every pay-in and pay-out is fast, accurate, and resilient.
Working closely with product, infrastructure, and compliance stakeholders, you will shape the technical direction of a domain where the bar for quality is exceptionally high, resilience is built through continuous learning, and every millisecond of performance matters — for the millions of retail users and the businesses that rely on Bitso to power their financial operations.
Reports To
This role reports to the Nexus Engineering Manager.
Who You Are
You are experienced in Java backend development, with a proven track record of shipping production systems at scale.
You are familiar with event-driven architecture patterns (event sourcing, CQRS, sagas) and have hands-on experience operating Apache Kafka in high-throughput, real-money environments.
You have designed and implemented distributed, fault-tolerant microservices that handle financial or similarly critical transactional data.
You have solid experience with relational databases (PostgreSQL preferred), including schema design, migrations, and query optimization.
You are comfortable with cloud-native infrastructure (AWS, GCP, or equivalent), containerization (Docker, Kubernetes), and CI/CD pipelines.
You communicate complex technical concepts clearly in English, written and spoken, to engineering peers, product managers, and senior leadership.
You work with a high degree of autonomy and ownership — you identify problems, propose solutions, and see them through to production.
You are familiar with AI-assisted development flow and tools (Cursor, Claude, CodeRabbit).
You have a strong sense of urgency and are comfortable operating in a fast-paced, high-stakes fintech environment.
Financial Domain (nice to have):
Familiarity with payment rails, reconciliation or idempotent transaction processing in financial systems is a strong plus.
What You Will Do
Own pay-in and pay-out systems: design, build, and maintain the core infrastructure that processes financial transactions and moves billions of dollars worldwide.
Architect event-driven solutions: design Kafka-based pipelines and workflows that guarantee correctness, ordering, and resilience at scale.
Drive technical decisions: lead architecture discussions, define and use patterns, and set standards for the pay-in and pay-out domain in collaboration with the Nexus team.
Deliver high-quality code: write clean, well-tested, high-performance Java code and champion engineering best practices through code reviews.
Embrace AI-assisted development: leverage tools like Cursor, Claude, and CodeRabbit as part of your everyday workflow, contribute to skills and guardrails development, and apply Spec-Driven Development (SDD) practices to ensure solutions are well-defined, reviewable, and aligned before implementation begins.
Ensure system reliability: proactively monitor, debug, and resolve production incidents with a focus on root-cause analysis and lasting fixes.
Collaborate cross-functionally: partner with Product, Compliance, and Finance stakeholders to translate complex business requirements into sound technical solutions.
Mentor and uplift: share knowledge with fellow engineers, contribute to internal tech talks, and foster a culture of continuous improvement within the squad.
Improve observability: instrument services with comprehensive metrics, logs, and traces to enable rapid diagnosis and confident deployments.
