WHO ARE WE?
Cohere is the leading security-first enterprise AI company. We build cutting-edge foundation AI models and end-to-end products that are designed to solve real-world business problems.
We’re training and deploying frontier models for enterprises who are building AI systems. We believe that our work is instrumental to the widespread adoption of AI and we are looking for folks that want to be part of that.
We obsess over what we build. Each one of us is responsible for contributing to increasing the capabilities of our models and the value they drive for our customers. Cohere is a team of researchers, engineers, designers, and more, who are all passionate about their craft.
We are a global technology company headquartered in Toronto with key offices in London, New York City, San Francisco, Montreal, Paris, Berlin and Seoul. Join us!
Why this role?
This role will focus on breaking down engineering tasks such as reporting, component search and handling of material billing/information into individual steps that can be tackled through tool use. Your breakdown will teach the Cohere model the logic needed to complete each task.
Please Note: This is a part-time independent contractor position available within Canada. We seek candidates who are able to commit to 16 hours per week minimum at a 30 CAD/hour contract rate. This role is BYOD 💻 - Bring Your Own Device (laptop). Remote work within Canada. 12 month contract.
As a Data Annotation Specialist, you will:
- Evaluate the model's ability to respond to engineering procedures and workflows
- Task models to complete engineering tasks along with verified information to evaluate the accuracy of the model's responses
- Label, proofread, and improve machine-written and human-written engineering-related outputs.
- Follow our style guide, and make recommendations on unique situations that fall outside of its scope.
You may be a good fit if you have:
- 3+ years of industry experience working in engineering fields (civil, mechanical, electrical, chemical)
- Technician/engineering specialist training and experience preferredAn education background in engineering (Bachelors, Masters or similar)
- Experience on medium-large scale engineering projects involving designing, prototyping and manufacturing components and/or experience in post-graduate research lab
- Experience with CAD software, material billing and product lifecycle management (PCMs) can be a plus
The Candidate Journey:
- Initial Screening: Our Talent Team will review your application.
- First Assessment: If selected to move forward, you’ll receive a multiple-choice assessment by email.
- Second Assessment: Candidates who achieve a passing score will be contacted by a member of our team to complete a more comprehensive assessment focused on their area of expertise.
- Video Screen: If selected to move forward, you’ll have a short video call with a member of our Operations Team.
- Final: Selected candidates will receive an Independent Contractor Agreement.
As an independent contractor, you maintain control over how you complete your work and may work with multiple clients simultaneously, although we ask you to declare if any of these are with a direct competitor of Cohere and maintain IP confidentiality of the Cohere project. Independent contractors are not eligible for health benefits or other benefits provided to employees. Compensation for services is provided to contractors by contractors invoicing for services provided pursuant to the terms of our agreement with the contractor.
It is important to understand that as an independent contractor, continuous work is not guaranteed. The client-contractor relationship is fundamentally project-based, meaning engagements may be temporary, periodic, or intermittent based on our organizational needs and project availability. As an independent contractor, you should anticipate fluctuations in workflow and therefore compensation for services when Cohere does not require as many hours of services in a week.
Prospective candidates, please be advised: this role involves working with human generated and model generated tasks that may involve exposure to not safe for work (NSFW) text content as part of data annotation tasks, including explicit, offensive, or other inappropriate material.
If some of the above doesn’t line up perfectly with your experience, we still encourage you to apply!
We value and celebrate diversity and strive to create an inclusive work environment for all. We welcome applicants from all backgrounds and are committed to providing equal opportunities. Should you require any accommodations during the recruitment process, please submit an Accommodations Request Form https://docs.google.com/forms/d/12a6IrLdF3kI2nonKSr4tiFuz18rLQbaeYV-JM9L4o9Q/edit, and we will work together to meet your needs.

About Anthropic
Anthropic’s mission is to create reliable, interpretable, and steerable AI systems. We want AI to be safe and beneficial for our users and for society as a whole. Our team is a quickly growing group of committed researchers, engineers, policy experts, and business leaders working together to build beneficial AI systems.
About the role
Anthropic's production models undergo sophisticated post-training processes to enhance their capabilities, alignment, and safety. Decisions in production training depend on knowing how the model is really behaving. Our team's mission is to have the best observability into production post-training runs at Anthropic: to be the clearest, most trusted view of model quality during training. We shape what gets measured, keep the signal trustworthy and timely, and get to the bottom of surprising results to inform post-training and release decisions.
In this role you will lead the science of how we evaluate production training runs. You'll work out which measurements tell us something real about the model, notice when they stop doing so, and find what we should be measuring but aren't. You'll partner with research teams across every RL domain, bringing their priorities into what we measure and setting the standard for what makes an eval trustworthy across post-training. You'll also be hands-on with the eval fleet day to day, because the best questions about measurement come from watching real results come in during a live run.
Responsibilities
Steer the eval strategy for production Claude models: study and optimize the eval mix so it gives the most accurate and complete assessment of model quality
Run and monitor the eval fleet live to understand how each Claude model is developing as it trains
Advise teams across post-training on eval methodology, and help eval authors bring new evals up to the bar for production
Investigate regressions in production runs and inform training interventions when appropriate
Build the dashboards, alerts, and reports that researchers and leadership use to track model quality
You may be a good fit if you
Have designed, run, and analyzed evaluations for ML models at scale
Care deeply about measurement quality, thinking twice before trusting a number
Can turn ambiguous results into clear recommendations, and are comfortable influencing direction across teams
Have strong Python skills and are comfortable working with production systems
Maintain clarity and rigor when debugging complex, time-sensitive issues
Thrive in controlled chaos and are energized, rather than overwhelmed, when juggling multiple urgent priorities during a live training run
Care about the societal impacts of your work and about shipping frontier models responsibly
Strong candidates may also have
Hands-on experience post-training large language models
Research experience in ML evaluation or benchmarking
Background in statistics and experimental design
Experience developing robust evaluation metrics for ML systems

Minimum education:
Bachelor’s degree or an equivalent combination of education, training, and/or experience
Required field of study:
A field relevant to the role as demonstrated through coursework, training, or professional experience

Years of experience required will correlate with the internal job level requirements for the position
Location-based hybrid policy:
Currently, we expect all staff to be in one of our offices at least 25% of the time. However, some roles may require more time in our offices.
Visa sponsorship:
We do sponsor visas! However, we aren't able to successfully sponsor visas for every role and every candidate. But if we make you an offer, we will make every reasonable effort to get you a visa, and we retain an immigration lawyer to help with this.
We encourage you to apply even if you do not believe you meet every single qualification.
Not all strong candidates will meet every single qualification as listed. Research shows that people who identify as being from underrepresented groups are more prone to experiencing imposter syndrome and doubting the strength of their candidacy, so we urge you not to exclude yourself prematurely and to submit an application if you're interested in this work. We think AI systems like the ones we're building have enormous social and ethical implications. We think this makes representation even more important, and we strive to include a range of diverse perspectives on our team.

How we're different
We believe that the highest-impact AI research will be big science. At Anthropic we work as a single cohesive team on just a few large-scale research efforts. And we value impact — advancing our long-term goals of steerable, trustworthy AI — rather than work on smaller and more specific puzzles. We view AI research as an empirical science, which has as much in common with physics and biology as with traditional efforts in computer science. We're an extremely collaborative group, and we host frequent research discussions to ensure that we are pursuing the highest-impact work at any given time. As such, we greatly value communication skills.
The easiest way to understand our research directions is to read our recent research. This research continues many of the directions our team worked on prior to Anthropic, including: GPT-3, Circuit-Based Interpretability, Multimodal Neurons, Scaling Laws, AI & Compute, Concrete Problems in AI Safety, and Learning from Human Preferences.
Come work with us!
Anthropic is a public benefit corporation headquartered in San Francisco. We offer competitive compensation and benefits, optional equity donation matching, generous vacation and parental leave, flexible working hours, and a lovely office space in which to collaborate with colleagues.
