Engagement: Independent Contractor
Job Summary
We’re hiring a
VP of Automation Engineering
for a senior, hands-on leadership role at the intersection of
automation architecture, product engineering, and AI systems
.
This is not a traditional management-only role. You’ll be expected to operate as a technical leader who still ships code, designs systems, manages engineers, and partners directly with the founder on strategy. You’ll own and scale the automation infrastructure that powers delivery across multiple clients while also building internal and external products that turn operational know-how into software.
This role is ideal for someone with deep
n8n
,
JavaScript/TypeScript
,
Node.js
, and
Claude Code / LLM systems
experience who has previously built automation infrastructure in a fast-scaling startup, agency, or services environment.
Key Responsibilities
Automation Architecture & Infrastructure
Own the company’s end-to-end automation ecosystem, including workflow design, orchestration, monitoring, versioning, and scaling.
Build reliable, queue-based and event-driven automation systems that can support increasing client complexity without breaking under load.
Architect multi-client automation infrastructure that supports different workflows, channels, cadences, and configurations across shared systems.
Design and maintain integrations across tools such as
n8n, Clay, Airtable, Slack, HubSpot, EmailBison, HeyReach
, and other operational platforms.
Implement robust error handling, alerting, and self-healing workflows to improve reliability and reduce downtime.
Establish scalable standards for workflow documentation, deployment, credential management, and system governance.
Product Development
Build internal products that transform operating processes into repeatable software, including dashboards, reporting tools, signal engines, and AI-powered workflow systems.
Lead the full product engineering lifecycle from architecture and implementation through testing and deployment.
Develop client-facing tools and automation products that extend the company’s value beyond services.
Set best practices for code quality, documentation, CI/CD, review processes, and release management.
AI Systems & Intelligence Layer
Design and deploy production-grade AI systems using
Claude, OpenAI
, and other LLM infrastructure.
Build intelligent workflows for classification, generation, summarization, decision support, and operational automation.
Determine where AI adds leverage versus where deterministic systems are the better architectural choice.
Improve the quality and reliability of AI systems through prompt design, evaluation, validation layers, fallback logic, and cost-aware implementation.
Team Leadership & Technical Direction
Build, mentor, and manage a growing automation engineering team.
Set engineering priorities, run sprint planning and retrospectives, and establish a high-performance delivery culture.
Partner directly with the CEO/Founder as a senior technical counterpart on roadmap, systems design, and build-vs-buy decisions.
Help shape the long-term technical organization, with clear progression toward a CTO-level leadership path.
Requirements
Non-Negotiable
Deep production-level experience with
n8n
, including complex workflows, webhook architectures, credentials, execution logic, error handling, and workflow scalability.
Strong full-stack development skills in
JavaScript/TypeScript
, including
Node.js
backend systems and modern frontend development such as
React
or equivalent.
Experience managing engineering teams of
3+ people
while remaining actively hands-on in production code.
Proven experience building and maintaining
AI/LLM systems in production
, including model integration, prompt workflows, output validation, token/cost awareness, and fallback design.
Strong systems architecture capability with a track record of designing for scale, maintainability, observability, and resilience.
Strategic technical leadership experience with the ability to translate business priorities into technical systems and product decisions.
Strongly Preferred
Experience in an
agency, services, or multi-client delivery environment
with shared infrastructure and varied customer requirements.
Experience building products with real users, feedback loops, and iteration cycles—not just internal admin tools.
Daily working experience with
Claude or Claude Code
as part of the development workflow.
Familiarity with tools such as
Clay, Airtable, HubSpot, Slack APIs
, and email infrastructure.
Experience with cloud infrastructure such as
AWS, GCP
, or similar platforms, including deployment, monitoring, and cost management.

As a Customer Engineering Lead, you’ll manage the customer-facing arm of our engineering org. Working with our existing solutions team, you’ll coordinate process and policies with the post-sales org, spanning implementations, partner success, and account management. - Identify opportunities to leverage AI and automation to increase operational efficiency - whether that's streamlining ticket triage, accelerating troubleshooting, or enabling the team to handle higher volume without sacrificing quality
- Define and maintain customer engineering artifacts such as documentation, guides, runbooks, and recipes

- Excited by a player-coach role - you're comfortable being in the queue, solving problems directly, while simultaneously building the team and processes around you
- An engineer by trade: you’re comfortable reading and contributing to an enterprise codebase while meeting a high bar of technical excellence
- Excellent communicator who can translate complex technical concepts for non-technical audiences - and vice versa
- Experience defining and implementing SLAs and escalation processes, especially cross-functionally to and from engineering teams
- Comfortable operating in a fast-paced, high-growth environment where you'll need to balance building for scale with solving immediate partner needs
- You lead with empathy and understand that great customer engineering is a competitive advantage
NICE TO HAVE

ABOUT US
Sierra is the leading platform for customer-facing AI agents, working with many of the world's biggest brands — including The GAP, Rocket Mortgage, SoFi, Sutter Health, and SoftBank — to transform how they serve customers and grow their businesses. We are primarily an in-person company based in San Francisco, with growing offices across North America, Europe, and Asia.
We are guided by a set of values that are at the core of our actions and define our culture: Trust, Customer Obsession, Craftsmanship, Intensity, and a commitment to balancing Family along the way. These values are the foundation of our work, and we are committed to upholding them in everything we do.
Our co-founders are Bret Taylor https://www.linkedin.com/in/brettaylor/ and Clay Bavor https://www.linkedin.com/in/claybavor/. Bret currently serves as Board Chair of OpenAI. Previously, he was co-CEO of Salesforce (which had acquired the company he founded, Quip) and CTO of Facebook. Bret was also one of Google's earliest product managers and co-creator of Google Maps. Before founding Sierra, Clay spent 18 years at Google, where he most recently led Google Labs. Earlier, he started and led Google’s AR/VR effort, Project Starline, and Google Lens. Before that, Clay led the product and design teams for Google Workspace.
WHAT YOU'LL DO
As an Agent Strategist https://sierra.ai/blog/agent-strategist-your-phd-in-applied-ai, you own how Sierra's AI agents come to life for our customers — from first pilot to a production agent handling thousands of conversations a day. You sit at the intersection of product, building agents and customer-facing work, and stay just as close to the technology as you are to the people you build for. You transform a customer's thorniest, highest-stakes problems into agents that measurably move their business.
- Own the Agent Development Life Cycle https://sierra.ai/blog/agent-development-life-cycle. Take agents from initial scope through conversation design, tooling, and evaluation, to launch and continuous iteration in production — translating business goals into an agent that outperforms, and tuning relentlessly until it's the best version of itself in the real world. You'll have real ownership and autonomy over the outcome.
- Be the trusted strategic advisor to enterprise leaders. Sit shoulder-to-shoulder with our customers' executives, understand what success actually means to their business, and shape the AI strategy that gets them there.
- Partner with the customer's working teams day to day. Run working sessions, troubleshoot the agent as issues come up, and make the calls that keep the build on track for launch.
- Directly impact product. Surface unmet needs from your customer work, and feed them back to research and platform to shape where Sierra goes next.
EXAMPLE PROJECTS
These are the kinds of projects that strategists on our team have worked on recently:
- Scope and launch a subscription-retention agent for a large telecommunications or media company that consistently outperforms human agents at saving at-risk customers.
- Stand up an agent for a commerce customer that troubleshoots a broken device end-to-end and personalizes product recommendations in the same conversation.
- Redesign the conversation flows for a financial services agent so it can handle complex, regulated interactions — and convert a pilot into a multi-team production deployment. See our financial services blog https://sierra.ai/blog/five-ways-to-use-ai-agents-financial-services for examples.
- Partner with product on a net-new capability — a new agent architecture or self-service tooling — using a live customer as the design partner.
- Define the evaluation and quality bar for a new agent, then use those metrics to drive a measurable lift in outcome https://sierra.ai/blog/outcome-based-pricing-for-ai-agents week over week.
WHAT YOU'LL BRING
- Customer obsession. Genuine energy being in front of customers — understanding their business and needs, thriving in complex organizations, and building trusted relationships.
- Communication. Clear, direct, and persuasive across technical and non-technical audiences.
- Strategic problem-solving in ambiguity. Strong analytical and critical-thinking skills to break down complex problems, spot risks early, and adapt as things change fast.
- Technical aptitude. Comfortable engaging directly with technical concepts - reading API documentation, understanding data models and system architecture, and following engineering tradeoffs in a design discussion.
- Ownership and delivery. A track record of running multiple complex, high-visibility projects at once and driving them to outcomes.
EVEN BETTER...
- Experience building or deploying AI/LLM agents in production — hands-on with the tools behind them (eval frameworks, agent tooling, RAG, prompt engineering) — working closely with technical counterparts.
- You've been a founder, founding team member, or operator — you know how to balance craft, ownership, and speed.
- A degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Mathematics, a related technical field, or equivalent practical experience — and/or an MBA or comparable experience at the intersection of technology and business.
OUR VALUES
- Trust: We build trust with our customers with our accountability, empathy, quality, and responsiveness. We build trust in AI by making it more accessible, safe, and useful. We build trust with each other by showing up for each other professionally and personally, creating an environment that enables all of us to do our best work.
- Customer Obsession: We deeply understand our customers’ business goals and relentlessly focus on driving outcomes, not just technical milestones. Everyone at the company knows and spends time with our customers. When our customer is having an issue, we drop everything and fix it.
- Craftsmanship: We get the details right, from the words on the page to the system architecture. We have good taste. When we notice something isn’t right, we take the time to fix it. We are proud of the products we produce. We continuously self-reflect to continuously self-improve.
- Intensity: We know we don’t have the luxury of patience. We play to win. We care about our product being the best, and when it isn’t, we fix it. When we fail, we talk about it openly and without blame so we succeed the next time.
- Family: We know that balance and intensity are compatible, and we model it in our actions and processes. We are the best technology company for parents. We support and respect each other and celebrate each other’s personal and professional achievements.
WHAT WE OFFER

- Flexible (unlimited) paid time off
- Medical, dental, and vision benefits for you and your family
- Life insurance and disability benefits
- Retirement plan dependent on country of employment

This role operates in close partnership with the Director, Industry Lead, Financial Services, translating industry-specific solution strategies and reference architectures into scalable, production-ready platform implementations. While the Industry Lead defines what should be built and why based on market and client needs, the Platform & Integration Lead defines how those solutions are architected, integrated, and delivered at scale.
Acting as the bridge between the Head of Solutions and the Head of Delivery, this role ensures that architectural designs are executable, interoperable, and aligned with enterprise-grade integration standards.
WHAT YOU’LL BE DOING (RESPONSIBILITIES)

- Design how APIs, data pipelines, platform services, and AI-enabled capabilities interact to form unified institutional platforms
- Establish and govern integration frameworks and reusable patterns aligned with industry reference architectures defined by the Industry Lead
- Guide engineering teams across:
- DevOps, CI/CD, and deployment environments
- System integration, testing, and validation
- Platform scalability, reliability, and performance
- Act as the senior authority for cross-platform dependencies, integration decisions, and system-level trade-offs
- Ensure alignment between solution architecture (what is designed) and technical delivery (what is built and operated)
WHAT WE LOOK FOR IN YOU (REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS)
- 10+ years of experience in platform architecture, enterprise integration, or large-scale system implementation
- Proven experience designing and delivering complex, multi-system platforms in banking, fintech, or enterprise environments
- Strong expertise in:
- API-first architecture
- Microservices and event-driven systems
- Enterprise data platforms and data integration
- Cloud infrastructure (AWS preferred)
- Demonstrated ability to translate high-level solution architectures into executable platform designs, working across architecture and engineering teams
- Experience collaborating with industry/domain leaders and client-facing architects to operationalize solution strategies
- Strong understanding of system interoperability, integration patterns, and distributed system design

About seQura
seQura provides innovative, flexible and easy-to-use payment technologies that help merchants acquire, convert and retain more customers. We make a difference in sales performance by tailoring our solutions to different sectors, to address their unique pain points and deliver superior results in Retail, Education, Eyewear and Travel. We also empower smart shopping to consumers who seek more value, convenience, and flexibility in their shopping, with new payment experiences that allow them to save, access interest-free credit, or pay in small, comfortable installments of up to 24 months.
Born in Barcelona, seQura is a privately-owned fintech, currently expanding throughout southern Europe and Latin America, growing above 50% CAGR. Over 6000 businesses, almost 3 million shoppers, and almost 400 employees continue to rate us as one of the most loved and trusted fintechs out there.
About the role
🤓
Finance at SeQura has evolved to building the infrastructure that powers forward-looking, insight-driven decisions. We are looking for builders, not classic FP&A profiles: people who have worked hands-on with AI tools, structured real databases, understand the business deeply, and get energy from turning messy manual processes into clean, automated ones. If you are excited by the idea of building an AI-first finance data platform for forecasting, planning, reporting, and decision-making, this role is for you.
What challenges you'll be solving
🚀
Build the financial data backbone of SeQura.
Help design, build, and maintain the single source of financial truth across P&L, cash flow, balance sheet, and unit economics; the data layer that everything else relies on.
Build tools, not reports.
Use AI (Claude), automation, and our data stack to create the models, pipelines, and tools that replace manual work and make insight available in real time.
Proactively find and kill inefficiency.
Proactively hunt down slow, manual, or fragile processes and re-engineer them. Own the problem end to end from spotting it to shipping the fix that sticks.
Partner with the business.
Work as a true finance partner through budgeting, forecasting, variance analysis, scenario planning, but with the goal of building the systems that make this faster and sharper every cycle.
Move to continuous, driver-based planning.
Help shift to rolling, driver-based forecasts and dynamic scenario analysis, powered by the infrastructure you build.
Turn data into decisions.
Prepare Board-, leadership-, and investor-ready materials that turn complex data into clear recommendations and build the tooling that makes producing them near-automatic.
Raise the bar on the stack.
Drive adoption of our finance and analytics tools (AI, Abacum, BI, automation, anomaly detection) to improve scalability, reduce manual work, and increase trust in analytics. Proactively identifying opportunities to automate before being asked to do so.
Help build a real-time decision engine.
Contribute to a Strategic Finance function that runs on ownership, automation, and analytical rigor, not manual reporting.
What we offer
😎
We have a strong and sustainable foundation, where we provide a secure and reliable workplace. You have the freedom and trust to make the best contribution possible.
One of our most valued strengths by our employees is our fellowship and supportive culture, which fosters a sense of belonging by working closely with our values. With us, you will have challenging projects to work on and push your skills and knowledge.
In addition, we are very proud of the unique office we have, which offers a comfortable and inspiring environment to work in with everything you need.
23 vacation days + 2 days of free disposal per year.
Professional development workshops or seminars.
Flexible compensation plan for transportation, restaurants, and kindergarten with Cobee.
Health insurance discounts with Sanitas and Adeslas.
Urban mobility by using your own bike with Kleta.
Free access to healthy, organic, and sustainable fruits.
Moreover, we offer a
Wellness Program
that embraces a holistic approach by covering 6 areas (occupational, physical, financial, emotional, social, and environmental consciousness). Each area will include various activities, and you'll be able to choose from 34 different activities that best meet your needs to configure a plan that best works for you.
What you’ll need 🤝
Genuinely curious and relentless; someone who actively questions existing processes, experiments with new tools (including AI), and has a track record of finding better ways to do things without being asked. We're not looking for someone who waits for permission to improve.
Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Accounting, Economics, Engineering, or a related field.
3+ years of experience in FP&A, Strategic Finance, or a similarly analytical role in a high-growth fintech, SaaS, lending, or other complex environment.
Proven ability to build and run driver-based financial models across P&L, cash flow, balance sheet, and unit economics.
Strong bias for action, with the ability to turn ambiguity into clear structure, decisions, and adopted solutions.
Systems thinker with strong analytical rigor and attention to detail.
Excellent communication and stakeholder-management skills, with the ability to translate complexity into clear business insight.
Active use of AI tools in day-to-day work, not just awareness, but genuine integration into how you work. Someone who has already replaced manual tasks with automation and who keeps looking for the next one.
Strong Excel and financial systems skills; experience with NetSuite, Abacum, and Embat is a plus.
Fluent in English; Spanish is a strong plus.
We kindly ask that you submit your
CV in English,
as it is the official language of our community.
We promote equal opportunity to all, regardless of age, color, gender identity, medical condition, physical or mental disability, race, religion, sexual orientation, or other characteristics. We have an inclusive environment, and respect is above all.
