ABOUT US:
AI NEEDS A NEW INFRASTRUCTURE LAYER. WE'RE BUILDING IT AT MODAL.
Every era of computing brought new workloads that previous infrastructure couldn't support: mainframes, databases, and the cloud. Each time, the company that rebuilt the layer underneath defined the decade. AI is no different, except it touches everything instead of one slice, and the window to build the layer underneath it is open right now.
Our customers include category-defining companies like Ramp https://modal.com/blog/how-ramp-built-a-full-context-background-coding-agent-on-modal, Cognition, DoorDash, and Suno. They rely on Modal for instant GPU access, sub-second container starts, and native storage, so it's simple to serve low-latency inference, fine-tune models, and access production-ready sandboxes at scale.
We've passed $1B in annualized run rate, up 15x from a year ago. In October 2026 we raised a $750M Series D led by Accel at a $15.75B valuation.
Our team includes creators of popular open-source projects (e.g.,Seaborn https://github.com/mwaskom/seaborn,Luigi https://github.com/spotify/luigi), academic researchers, international olympiad medalists, and experienced engineering and product leaders with decades of experience.
THE ROLE:
Modal's LLM inference platform delivers frontier performance https://modal.com/blog/kimi-k3-by-moonshot-now-available-on-modal for open-source models with best-in-class elasticity and developer experience, made in part possible by our custom runtime with GPU memory snapshots https://modal.com/blog/gpu-mem-snapshots and multi-cloud substrate https://modal.com/blog/resource-solver.
We're looking for a leader to own the direction and execution of this platform to continue to establish us as the clear market leader, working closely with customers like Cognition, Doordash, Ramp, and many more. You'll be leading a group of highly talented engineers working on our market-leading LLM inference offering, spanning the serving stack, routing infrastructure, internal agentic optimization platform, and the user-facing product surface area.
This is a hands-on leadership role — expect to split your time between technical contribution, product shaping and people management depending on what the team needs. You'll set direction, remove blockers, and build a strong engineering culture as your team tackles hard problems in distributed computing, frontier inference serving, and performance optimization.
WHAT YOU'LL WORK ON:
Team
- Recruit, hire, and grow a high-performing team of engineers; run regular 1:1s focused on coaching, feedback, and career growth
- Set clear performance expectations, hold a high bar, and build an environment where engineers do their best work
- Foster a culture of ownership, accountability, customer obsession, and continuous improvement
Technical and Product Direction
- Drive technical and product decisions through design reviews, code reviews, and architectural discussions
- Lead our efforts working with customers with novel or frontier workloads so they can be successful running on Modal
- Translate learnings from frontier customers into a roadmap for our internal optimization platform and user-facing product, so that gains from optimization and research efforts are accessible to all of our users
- Establish standards for reliability and product excellence; ensure the team owns projects end-to-end, from spec through production
Cross-Functional Leadership
- Partner with business operations and compute strategy on continuing to develop our strategy for compute purchases across a variety of accelerators
- Collaborate with GTM on product launches, positioning, and improving win rates for inference opportunities
- Help guide the roadmap for teams building the infrastructure platform underlying inference, as well as adjacent product teams
YOU MAY BE A FIT IF:
- You have 10+ years of industry experience, including 3+ years in a leadership role
- You have a track record of building high-performance systems at scale
- You have a strong background in cloud infrastructure
- You have deep knowledge of low-level OS foundations (Linux kernel, file systems, containers, etc.)
NICE-TO-HAVE:
- Experience working with LLM inference in production
- Familiarity with underlying concepts like engines, kernels, routing, KV cache management, and speculative decoding

✨ ONE PLATFORM, A WHOLE WORLD OF OPPORTUNITY
The best jobs have always clustered in a handful of the world's wealthiest cities. But talent is everywhere. Oyster set out to close that gap - building a global employment platform that lets companies hire, pay, and care for brilliant people anywhere.
We're proof that a high-performing culture doesn't need an office. Distributed across 60+ countries since 2020, we've built something the industry keeps noticing:
- Ranked #10 of 250 on TIME and Statista's 2026 list of America's Top WorkTech Companies https://www.oysterhr.com/library/oyster-hr-named-10-of-americas-top-worktech-companies-of-2026-by-time
- Named one of America's Greatest Startup Workplaces 2026 https://www.oysterhr.com/library/oyster-2026-newsweek-award by Newsweek
- A G2 Spring 2026 Leader https://www.oysterhr.com/library/oyster-named-best-roi-for-any-global-employment-platform-for-g2-spring-2026 across Employer of Record, Global Employment, Multi-country Payroll, and HR Compliance

Two of those rankings measured our business impact from the outside. One measured how our own people feel about working here. They landed in the same place ~ because at Oyster, culture and performance aren't separate conversations. They're the same one.
And we're just getting started. If you want to do the best work of your career alongside people who care as much as you do, we'd love for you to apply.
👩💻 THE ROLE
Location: While this position is posted in a specific location, all of Oyster’s positions are fully remote and you can work from home. Forever. To create the best experience for our new hire, this role requires you to be based within UTC−6 to UTC+3.
Oyster’s Data Engineering team is building the foundational AI platform layer that will enable teams across Oyster to develop, deploy, and operate secure, production-grade AI capabilities. As a Senior Data Engineer focused on AI Platform, you’ll work at the intersection of data engineering, platform engineering, and applied AI. - 5+ years of experience in data engineering, platform engineering, backend engineering, ML engineering, or a related discipline, with experience building and operating production systems.
- Strong Python and SQL skills.
- Strong data engineering fundamentals, including data pipelines, data modeling, data quality, orchestration, and secure data access.
- Experience with Snowflake, Databricks, or comparable modern data platforms, and tools such as dbt, Airflow, or similar.
- Hands-on experience building or supporting production systems using LLMs / generative AI.
- Practical experience with one or more of RAG, embeddings, vector search, tool/function calling, AI agents, or enterprise knowledge systems.
- Experience building data or platform capabilities that are reusable across teams, rather than only developing one-off solutions.
- Experience taking systems from experimentation to reliable production, including considerations around scalability, observability, performance, and maintainability.
- Solid understanding of security, authentication/authorization, privacy, and data governance, particularly in the context of enterprise data.
- Strong communicator who can work across Engineering, Product, and IT to turn ambiguous AI and data problems into practical engineering solutions.
Bonus
- Experience with AWS Bedrock or other managed foundation-model platforms.
- Hands-on experience with MCP (Model Context Protocol) or similar approaches for connecting AI systems to enterprise tools and data.
- Experience with LLM evaluation, observability, monitoring, or AI quality.
- Experience with LangChain, LangGraph, or similar frameworks.
- Experience with vector databases or search technologies.
- Experience implementing AI security, governance, or responsible AI practices.

HEALTH CAN’T WAIT.
Not for symptoms to get worse. Not for a six‑month appointment. Not for a system to catch up. But that’s exactly how healthcare works today. You wait, until you can’t.
Alan exists to end the wait.
Health is a universal right, and we believe this right can only become real when it’s coupled with prevention. We need to stop treating health as something we repair and start treating it as something we build, every day. It’s not solely a question of willpower. It’s the healthcare system itself that needs to work for everyone, in a sustainable way.
So we are building the new standard in prevention insurance. Alan is the first company that integrates insurance, prevention, and care into a single, acclaimed user experience.
We are on an incredible journey to build a global leading company, with a unique culture https://alan.com/en/careers. We already partner with 40K+ companies of all sizes, serving more than 1M+ members, and have reached €800M+ in ARR.
Prevention as the new norm. That's what we're building with our team of 1000+ people. If it speaks to you: we're hiring across France, Spain, Belgium, and Canada. And beyond.
⭐ THE ENGINEERING TEAM ⭐
In our engineering team, we build the infrastructure, interfaces, and applications to provide first-class service to our members, health professionals, and even ourselves!
Being an engineer at Alan means joining a team of talented, committed and passionate engineers, with a lot of interactions.
We move fast, with a lot of ownership, and are proud to tackle big problems!
Our process is very simple: those who make product decisions are the same ones who build them.
We are also the stewards of our members' most sensitive data, and building privacy in by design is core engineering work for us, not an afterthought.

🛠️ THE STACK
Python/Flask, Typescript, React, React Native on the coding side. AWS, GCP, Kubernetes, PostgreSQL, Redis, Terraform/Terramate, Datadog, Cloudflare, GitHub Actions on the platform side, all in a monorepo. We deploy daily and believe in distributed ownership - you build it, you own it.
🤖 THE DATA FOUNDATIONS CREW - WITHIN THE TECH FOUNDATIONS AREA
🎯 MISSION
- Tech Foundations - enables product crews and creates the environment to thrive, combining world-class infrastructure, intuitive developer experience, exquisite operational excellence, and built-in security to make shipping exceptional products effortless.
- Data Foundations - is one of its crews. Its mission: be the enabling and platform team for data lifecycle and privacy engineering across Alan: retention, deletion, anonymization, and pseudonymization, by design. It builds and runs the GDPR Orchestrator (the platform's current embodiment) and equips each area to own its own data rules on top of it. The team also handles data shared with third parties and partners, with Legal and Security on requirements, including authority-facing work (e.g. CNIL).
🔭 SCOPE
1. Own and evolve the privacy platform (build & run): its core engine, its safety mechanisms (preview/dry-run, audit trail), and its operational health (deploys, on-call, observability). You design the contract areas build on and keep it reliable as adoption grows.
2. Build the paved road (enable, teach to fish): docs, templates, and self-serve tooling so any of our 15+ areas can plug into the platform and manage its own data rules and dependencies. You coach areas through pairing and syncs; you build the capability rather than doing the work for them.
3. Coordinate across areas (the cross-area bridge): align legal, security, data, and the data-producing areas on requirements, surface cross-area data dependencies, and resolve design trade-offs between them. You own the coordination; each area stays accountable for its own data and rules.
4. Push the foundations forward: drive open platform design questions to a conclusion and grow the platform's capabilities as Alan's data, products, and footprint expand.
👀 FOCUS FOR 2026
- Own the platform: become the long-term owner of the GDPR Orchestrator and shape the roadmap for how Alan manages data lifecycle at scale.
- Raise the bar on the platform: invest in its safety, observability, and developer experience so areas build on it with confidence.
- Lay the paved road: ship the docs, templates, and tooling that let areas self-serve, then move ownership of data rules to the areas that produce the data.
- Scale the surface: grow the platform's reach across data stores and third-party systems as Alan expands into new countries.
⭐ IS IT YOU WE'RE LOOKING FOR?
EXPERIENCE WE VALUE
- Senior-level experience (typically 8+ years) in backend or platform software engineering, or equivalent, with deep production ownership (API and contract design, data modeling, running what you ship).
- You've built and operated platforms, libraries, or services that other engineers depend on, and you care about the contract you expose to them.
- You're comfortable operating across many teams and influencing without authoritarianism: getting legal, security, data, and product crews who don't report to you aligned on a plan, and driving it to completion.
- You bring pragmatism under constraint: you ship sound, safe solutions and improve them over time, rather than waiting for perfect.
- Strong plus: prior privacy, GDPR, or data-governance exposure, and experience working in an enabling or platform-team operating model.
- Explicitly not required: deep legal expertise. Legal and security partner with this role; they don't get replaced by it.
MINDSET WE VALUE
- You treat platform engineering as product work: engineers and members are your customers, and doing the right thing with their data should feel effortless.
- You're hands-on: writing code is the bulk of the job (Python, TypeScript). You ship what you write to production yourself, then operate it: rollouts, alerting, on-call, incident response.
- You design and communicate: you're as comfortable writing a framing doc, drawing a dependency map, and aligning several areas on a design decision as you are writing the code.
- You're an enabler: you measure your impact by how fast areas run their own data rules without ever consulting you. The harder you've worked, the less they have to engage you.
- You build reusable patterns: guardrails, libraries, and safe-by-default abstractions that keep data handling correct and safe by design at scale.
- You're fluent in English (French is not required).
For this opportunity, we are aiming to hire above the E level range https://medium.com/alan/a-new-iteration-of-our-engineering-career-path-at-alan-f46f7b229b2d.
But above all, we are looking for high potential and curiosity: make sure to show us this when you apply! Everything else is a bonus.
🌍 HOW WE WORK
- Location: You must be legally eligible to work in France, Belgium, or Spain.
- Remote work: We offer remote work flexibility, but we value in-person collaboration.
🎯 IMPORTANT NOTE: WE HIRE PEOPLE, NOT ROLES.
If you're excited about this opportunity but don't check every box, we'd love to hear from you. Everyone, no matter how underrepresented, should feel free to apply, as it can only bring learnings or success.
If you identify yourself as a woman: Did you know that research shows women often apply only when meeting 100% of requirements?
Remember, this is just a guide, not a checklist.
We'll be thrilled to receive your application!

⭐️ THE DATA FOUNDATIONS TEAM ⭐
At Alan, every decision we make about our members' care, contracts and claims is a data decision. The Data Foundations team builds the platform that makes those decisions possible in a safe way.
- Being part of the Data Foundations team means you’ll build, maintain, and improve the Data Platform used by everyone at Alan.
- We enable Alan’s data-driven nature and help our colleagues make the most of their data.
- Partner closely with people across Alan (technical and non-technical) to understand their needs and build data solutions they can trust and use effectively.
- We own and manage all data-related tools that power Alan.
- AI is changing the way companies work with data: agents are becoming first-class users of our data warehouse. It opens a world of new usage and exciting features, as well as concerns around security, data quality and governance. We are building the foundations that allow Alan to make the most of this exciting new paradigm.
- Alan is expanding quickly: we went from 4 to 6 countries this year and we won’t stop there. Our objective is to onboard new countries in weeks, not months. Having strong data foundations is a cornerstone of that expansion, allowing our teams to make sense of a patchwork of insurance systems, regulations and reporting rules.
- Examples of our missions:
- improve the developer experience when building and maintaining data pipelines,
- enable reliable and secure access to our data warehouse for Alaners and AI agents,
- strengthen security and governance around our data assets,
- define and implement standard data practices across Alan,
- maintain and evolve our core data infrastructure to accommodate Alan's international expansion and growing product breadth…
- Our core tools include Python, Airflow, Snowflake, AWS/GCP, Metabase, Terraform, dbt, and others.
- Who you'll work with: Data Foundations is a small, high-leverage team inside the Tech Foundations area, whose mission is to enable product crews through world-class infrastructure, developer experience, operational excellence, and built-in security. You'd be joining as one of its core engineers, working daily with the whole Data community at Alan.
🎯 EXPECTED SKILLS AND ABILITIES
You would thrive at Alan if most of this sounds like you:
- Passionate about owning ambitious problems and developing simple solutions for them.
- 3+ years of experience demonstrating impact in Data positions. We welcome candidates from early-career to highly experienced profiles. You may already have strong expertise in Data Engineering, or be an experienced data or software engineer looking to deepen your specialization in this area.
- Experience building and operating production data infrastructure: orchestration (Airflow or similar), a cloud data warehouse, infrastructure as code.
- Experience designing systems, tools or libraries used by other engineers, scientists or analysts.
- Proficient in Python and SQL. Setting a high standard of rigor and precision for yourself, interested in your craft.
- Curious about AI and eager to use it thoughtfully to increase your impact.
- Great listening and communication skills.
- Humble, kind, collaborative, and still willing to grow (no matter your seniority!).
- Fluent and clear in English, both oral and written (no need to speak French!).
For this role, we are looking to hire within the C0-E level range https://alan.com/en/careers/a/salary-equity.
