Hi, I'm Paul, VP of Engineering at
Customer.io
. We're looking for a staff product engineer — not a generalist who happens to touch frontend and backend, but someone who thinks like a product owner and ships like an engineer.
About
Customer.io
Over 9,000 companies — from scrappy startups to global brands — use our platform to send billions of emails, push notifications, in-app messages, and SMS every day.
Customer.io
powers automated communication that people actually want to receive.
We help teams send smarter, more relevant messages using real-time behavioral data. Under the hood: Go, React, and AI help us ship fast and scale with confidence.
What We Value
End-to-end ownership
You take on the problems nobody's claimed — the ones that span squads with no obvious owner — and carry them from a fuzzy first conversation to what's actually live. If it touches the customer, it's yours to chase down.
Comfort in ambiguity
Half-formed problems and conflicting signals are your starting material, not a blocker. You define the problem before you solve it, form a point of view on what's worth building, and move without waiting for someone else to de-risk the call.
Customer-first, always
You think from the customer's problem backward, not the codebase forward. Every technical call traces back to what it does for the person on the other end of the message — and you can explain that connection to people who don't write code. Given the choice, you ship the thing that changes their experience, not the thing that's merely elegant.
A healthy skepticism for "the way things are done"
You retire practices that have outlived their usefulness, including ones you helped build. Best practices matter — but never more than forward motion.
Force multiplication
Shipping your part isn't the bar. You bring in the right people before a problem becomes theirs to clean up, and you leave enough behind — docs, patterns, delegation — that the team keeps moving without you in the room.
What You'll Do
Own important, ambiguous problems from initial framing through launch and iteration. Set direction, align partners, and stay accountable for the result.
Partner with product, design, and data to shape priorities, scope the work, and define how success will be measured.
Lead technical decisions across the stack, including architecture, performance, reliability, and maintainability.
Lead work across teams and systems. Build alignment, resolve technical disagreements, and keep complex initiatives moving.
Improve engineering practices through mentorship, reusable patterns, and clear technical guidance.
Use AI throughout your engineering work, with sound judgment about where it helps, where it falls short, and how its output should be reviewed. Help the team improve by testing new workflows, sharing what works, and identifying useful opportunities for automation.
Participate in an on-call rotation as required, supporting the systems the team builds.
What we're looking for
A track record of leading complex work across teams or systems and delivering meaningful customer, business, or engineering outcomes.
Strong backend engineering experience, with the ability to work across the stack and lead end-to-end technical decisions.
Strong product and technical judgment, especially when the problem or path forward is unclear.
The ability to influence experienced peers and align teams without formal authority.
Experience using metrics, experimentation, and observability to guide decisions and improve production systems.
Regular, hands-on use of AI across the software development lifecycle, with the judgment to adapt as tools change while remaining accountable for quality, security, and outcomes. Experience improving how a broader team uses AI is a strong plus.

About Vercel:
Vercel is the agentic infrastructure company, freeing people and agents to ship what's next. For more than a decade we've helped builders move from idea to production with speed, security, and exceptional developer experience.
Now we're scaling our products for both agents and people to ship and run software, built in the open and trusted by OpenAI, PayPal, Ramp, Supreme, and millions of developers worldwide.
About the role
The Scheduled Tasks team builds the platform primitives that let applications and agents run work now, later, or for a long time. We own Vercel Workflows, Queues, and Cron: the systems developers use to build long-running, event-driven, and scheduled applications.
You will join a team working at the intersection of developer experience and distributed systems. Together, we are building and scaling the products that make it straightforward for developers to coordinate background work, move messages between services, and schedule work with confidence. You will collaborate closely with engineers across Vercel to make these powerful capabilities feel simple, composable, and native to the platform.
What you'll do
Design, build, and operate platform capabilities across Workflows, Queues, and Cron.
Help developers build applications and agents that coordinate background, event-driven, and scheduled work.
Build APIs, SDKs, and tooling that make it easy to define, run, and manage durable work at scale.
Work on the distributed-systems foundations behind scheduling, message delivery, execution, retries, and state.
Partner with product, developer experience, and infrastructure teams to turn customer needs into clear, useful developer primitives.
Raise the engineering bar through thoughtful design reviews, well-tested code, production ownership, and clear technical communication.
Engage with developers and the open-source community to understand where background jobs, queues, and scheduling create friction—and use that feedback to improve the platform.
What you need
You have 5+ years of experience building and operating distributed systems, developer platforms, or cloud infrastructure.
Experience with TypeScript/JavaScript and open-source infrastructure or developer tools is a plus.
You are comfortable working across APIs, runtimes, storage, networking, and production operations.
You have experience with one or more of: job queues, schedulers, workflow orchestration, event-driven systems, state machines, stream processing, or durable execution.
You understand the tradeoffs behind delivery guarantees, retries, idempotency, concurrency, and fault tolerance—and can turn those tradeoffs into usable product primitives.
You write high-quality, well-tested code and enjoy solving complex technical problems.
You communicate clearly, collaborate well across teams, and help a growing team converge on strong technical decisions.
Benefits & Compensation:
Competitive compensation package, including equity.
Inclusive Healthcare Package.
Learn and Grow - we provide mentorship and send you to events that help you build your network and skills.
Flexible Time Off.
We will provide you the gear you need to do your role, and a WFH budget for you to outfit your space as needed.
The base pay range for this role is $196,000.00 - $312,000.00. Actual salary will be based on job-related skills, experience, and location. Compensation outside of San Francisco may be adjusted based on employee location. The total compensation package may include benefits, equity-based compensation, and eligibility for a company bonus or variable pay program depending on the role. Your recruiter can share more details during the hiring process.

COMPANY DESCRIPTION
Today, when you go to your doctor and get referred to a specialist (e.g., for sleep apnea), your doctor sends out a referral and tells you, “They’ll be in touch soon.” So you wait. And wait. Sometimes days, weeks, or even months. Why? Because too often specialists and medical services are overwhelmed with referrals and the painstakingly manual process it takes to qualify your referral prevents them from getting around to it on time, or sometimes at all. Tennr prevents these delays and denials by making sure every referral gets where it needs to go, with the right info, at the right time. Powered by RaeLM™ Tennr reads, extracts, and acts on every piece of patient information so providers can capture more referrals, slash denials, and reduce delays.
ROLE DESCRIPTION
We’re hiring a Senior Product Designer to own design for the operational workflows where healthcare ops teams spend their day.
You’ll lead work end-to-end: discovery with customers, problem framing, systems-level design, and shipping + iterating closely with PM and engineering. You prototype in Figma and in code, and you optimize for fast learning and real user impact.
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Own design for operational workflows used daily by ops teams; improve their speed and accuracy.
- Lead discovery (interviews, shadowing, usability testing) and turn insight into decisions.
- Design scalable patterns for dense, multi-state operational workflows.
- Iterate quickly from concept → production; test, learn, refine.
- Use and extend Tennr’s design system components and document new design patterns.
- Communicate rationale clearly to a variety of stakeholders, including product and engineering teams, internal leadership, and customers.
QUALIFICATIONS
- 5+ years product design experience; strong craft on complex desktop web products.
- Comfortable owning research directly; credible with customers.
- Systems thinker (workflows, states, patterns) with strong product judgment.
- Proven ability to ship, iterate, and make tradeoffs.
- Design-systems experience.
- Technical fluency to collaborate on feasibility and prototype in code.
- Strong writing + verbal communication; ownership mindset.
- Excited about improving healthcare operations.
WHY TENNR?
- Drive Impact: one of our company values is Cowboy, meaning you set the pace. You won’t just talk about things, you’ll get them done. And feel the impact.
- Develop Operational Expertise: learn the inner workings of scaling systems, tools, and infrastructure
- Innovate with Purpose: we’re not just doing this for fun (although we do have a lot of fun). At Tennr, you’ll join a high-caliber team maniacally focused on reducing patient delays across the U.S. healthcare system.
- Build Relationships: collaborate and connect with like-minded, driven individuals in our Hudson Square office 4 days/week
- Free lunch! Plus a pantry full of snacks.
BENEFITS
- Beautiful new office at 345 Hudson Street
- Unlimited PTO
- 100% paid employee health benefit options

About GiveDirectly
What if the most effective way to fight poverty was also the simplest: give people money and trust them to decide what they need?
Since 2011, GiveDirectly has proven that idea at scale. We’ve delivered more than $1B in cash directly to 2+ million people living in poverty and crisis across 15 countries, and rigorous research shows the results: healthier kids, stronger businesses, sturdier homes, and more resilient families and local economies. Cash is now widely recognized as one of the most scalable, cost-effective, and dignified forms of aid.
Our ambition goes beyond our own programs. We want cash to become the benchmark for aid, much as the index fund became the benchmark for investing, so that every aid dollar is held to one question:
is this doing more good than giving the money directly to people living in poverty?
We’re growing fast, and this is a rare and important moment to join.
We expect to hit $1B in revenue in 2026 with significant growth forecast for 2027. At the same time we are building a new technology stack and operating model designed for a roughly 10x change in scale, and we are actively pursuing partnerships with major funders to move even more money in bigger ways, to people who need it. We are known for our extensive integration of technology into field processes; our quantitative approach to performance measurement; and our commitment to rigorous, independent, experimental evaluation of our impact, with multiple Randomized Control Trials completed and others in progress.
How we work
Our team spans 20+ countries and 69 languages. Our culture is candid, analytical, and non-hierarchical. We expect high ownership and give people real responsibility early. Our values are central to how we hire, work, and grow, and they are deliberately opinionated:
Recipients first.
Recipients’ preferences come before those of donors or ourselves.
Team next.
We optimize for organizational success, not individual success.
Be proactively candid.
We say what we believe and share information openly.
Create positive energy.
We aim to be a source of energy for colleagues, not a drain.
Think rigorously; act quickly.
We reason from first principles, then act rather than debate.
Know yourself and grow.
We own our imperfections and seek feedback to grow.
Accept reality. Propose solutions.
We focus on what can change and bring solutions, not just problems.
Be productively ambitious.
We take risks for step-change impact, not incremental progress.
If they describe how you like to work and they energize you, this could be a great fit.

- Strong problem-solving skills with a focus on strategic, scalable solutions
- Business acumen and domain fluency — ideally in healthcare or similarly complex industries
- Comfortable with ambiguity and fast-paced, unstructured environments
- Demonstrated ability to mentor others and contribute to team-wide best practices
- High ownership mindset and urgency — proactive, resourceful, and impact-driven

As a Product Marketing Manager at Tennr, you'll shape how we bring our products to market across the business. You'll work across Marketing, Sales, Customer Success, and Product teams to translate what we build into messaging that lands with healthcare buyers who've never heard of us and healthcare buyers who already have three vendors pitching them something similar.
You'll know you're right for this if you can move fluidly between big-picture, strategic positioning and the actual sentence-level writing that makes a sales deck or launch email land. You like owning things end to end, and you're comfortable in a fast-moving team working with a lot of stakeholders.
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Positioning & Messaging: Own the day-to-day execution of Tennr's positioning and messaging across the business, delivering high performance narratives that cut through the noise and resonate with our target audience.
- Product Launches: Run point on launches for new products and features, in partnership with the Product team. Develop a deep understanding of our product value and how to communicate it to our audiences.
- Audience Understanding: Be an internal expert on our target audiences, including what they care about and how to talk to them.
- Sales Enablement: Build key sales assets (e.g., one-pagers, decks, battlecards) and train the Sales team to leverage them to help drive growth of the business.
- Competitive Intelligence: Track the competitive landscape and lead the development of guidance for how we compete.
QUALIFICATIONS
- 3–5 years of product marketing experience, or equivalent experience in a GTM role, ideally at a fast-growing B2B SaaS company.
- Strong writing that sets you apart from a flood of AI slop. You can point to specific examples of short-form and long-form content you've written and can explain the thinking behind it.
- High agency and results-oriented. Able to drive projects from planning to completion with limited oversight.
- Comfort with ambiguity. Like any startup job, this role’s priorities will shift as we grow. You should be energized by that, not unsettled by it.
- Cross-functional credibility. You've worked closely with Sales and/or Product before and can speak to a specific example of influencing what they did based on your input.
- Low ego, high energy. Willing to admit mistakes and work to fix them.
A PLUS IF YOU…
- Have healthcare or healthtech industry experience.
- Have built AI automations to support product marketing responsibilities.

THE ADVENTURE AHEAD 🚀
As a Senior Product Engineer II, you bring deep expertise in either backend or frontend engineering alongside strong working competency across the full stack. You own complex features and technical initiatives end to end, working across customer facing applications, services, APIs, and integration boundaries to deliver complete solutions.
Your primary strength may be building cloud native backend systems and event driven architectures, or architecting complex frontend applications and customer experiences. In either case, you understand how the broader system fits together and can confidently work across boundaries when needed.
Beyond your individual technical output, you function as a technical anchor within your squad. You help drive technical direction, mentor peers, coordinate dependencies, and ensure the team can consistently deliver high quality software without creating unnecessary knowledge silos.
THE DAY-TO-DAY ⚒️
- Own complex initiatives end to end Drive multi sprint technical initiatives from architecture through implementation, production deployment, and ongoing evolution.
- Build across the stack Navigate frontend applications, APIs, backend services, data layers, and platform integrations to deliver complete outcomes.
- Set technical direction Bring deep expertise in your primary discipline while shaping architecture decisions and engineering patterns across the broader system.
- Make durable technical decisions Evaluate complex tradeoffs, manage technical risk, and balance immediate delivery with long term scalability and maintainability.
- Anchor the squad Break down complex work, coordinate technical dependencies, unblock others, and help the team maintain delivery momentum.
- Drive engineering excellence Raise the bar for testing, CI/CD, observability, architecture, code quality, and pragmatic technical debt management.
- Partner across functions Work with Product, Design, QA, SRE, platform teams, and engineering groups to translate customer problems into reliable solutions.
- Level up the team Mentor engineers through architecture discussions, design reviews, code reviews, pairing, and knowledge sharing.
YOUR SUPERPOWERS⚡️
- Engineering depth and breadth Six or more years of software engineering experience, with deep expertise in either backend or frontend engineering and strong working competency across the broader stack.
- End to end ownership A proven record of owning complex technical initiatives from architecture through production deployment and operation.
- System design expertise Strong understanding of scalable application architecture, APIs, distributed systems, cloud services, and maintainable production software.
- Technical leadership The ability to guide engineers through uncertainty, establish effective architecture patterns, and raise engineering standards.
- Integration fluency Comfort navigating unfamiliar systems and safely changing frontend, backend, and integration boundaries.
- Engineering excellence Strong experience with automated testing, CI/CD, observability, monitoring, and pragmatic technical debt management.
- Collaborative communication The ability to explain tradeoffs, challenge assumptions constructively, and align Engineering, Product, Design, QA, and platform stakeholders.
BONUS POINTS 🌟
- Cloud and event driven systems Cloud native AWS applications using serverless services, asynchronous workflows, distributed systems, or event driven architecture.
- Infrastructure and delivery Infrastructure as Code, CI/CD pipelines, deployment strategies, or production operations.
- Frontend architecture Angular, React, or comparable frameworks, including application architecture, state management, design systems, performance, or accessibility.
- Backend breadth Node.js and TypeScript services or polyglot environments that include Go, Python, PHP, or other backend technologies.
- Production observability Monitoring, tracing, logging, metrics, incident diagnosis, and production operation.
- Technical growth Experience acting as a technical lead or clear progression toward broader Staff level leadership.
OUR STACK 🛠️
Our product teams work primarily with TypeScript across frontend and backend development. Frontend applications include Angular and modern web technologies. Backend and platform systems span Node.js, TypeScript, Go, PHP, Python, AWS, REST APIs, event driven architectures, relational and NoSQL databases, CI/CD, and modern observability tooling.
You do not need deep expertise in every technology we use. We are looking for deep expertise in a primary discipline, strong software engineering fundamentals, and confidence working across frontend, backend, and integration boundaries.
OUR HYBRID WORK PHILOSOPHY 🤝
Great work can happen anywhere but coming together helps us go further. Our team spends three days a week in the office (Tuesday-Thursday) to collaborate, solve problems, and learn from each other. With flexibility the rest of the week, it’s a balance designed to help everyone do their best work and keep growing.
