An overview of this role
As a Senior Backend Engineer with the
Database Excellence group
, you'll build and evolve the data frameworks and tooling that keep GitLab's application datastores scalable, healthy, and safe across both GitLab.com and thousands of self-managed instances. A primary focus for this role is building proactive data growth controls for GitLab.com, including retention and lifecycle management frameworks, enforcement of retention policies at schema-change time, and tooling that keeps database growth sustainable as AI-driven development accelerates how quickly data accumulates. You'll help teams across GitLab reason confidently about data architecture, placement, and lifecycle management, while proactively identifying saturation points in our GitLab.com infrastructure and driving corrective actions with partner teams. With the team's recent move into the Data Engineering organization, you'll also shape new scalability and data health features for self-managed customers, working hands-on with PostgreSQL and Ruby on Rails in a fully remote, highly collaborative environment.
Some examples of our projects:
Data Growth Controls (retention enforcement and data lifecycle management)
SQL Traffic Replay Tooling
Background Operations Framework
What you'll do
Develop and iterate backend features and data frameworks that make it safe and efficient for GitLab teams to work with data at scale across SaaS and self-managed deployments.
Design and build data retention and lifecycle management frameworks, including retention policy enforcement, bulk data removal tooling, and automated identification of tables that need retention policies.
Build shift-left guardrails, such as static analysis checks and schema-change-time enforcement, that catch unsustainable data growth patterns before they reach production.
Collaborate closely with product management, UX, frontend, infrastructure, software delivery, and analytics teams to design and ship high-performing solutions
Review and improve database-related changes from other engineers and community contributors, ensuring data integrity, safety, and performance across all deployment scenarios.
Design, build, and maintain tooling such as SQL traffic replay and background operations frameworks to proactively surface and address scalability and performance issues.
Research, design, and implement improvements to data retention and lifecycle management, database performance, scalability, and data health, including areas like soft delete strategies and database migration testing.
Document database best practices, patterns to avoid, and data architecture guidance to enable developers to make informed decisions.
Develop proactive tooling and guardrails that help developers detect and remediate potential performance and data issues early in the development lifecycle.
What you'll bring
Professional software engineering experience working with PostgreSQL in large, complex production environments, including high availability solutions with automatic failover and zero-downtime data migrations as well as managing large or fast-growing datasets through approaches such as data retention, archiving, partitioning, or lifecycle management.
Proficiency with Ruby on Rails or another Ruby framework, including designing, implementing, and reviewing backend features.
Ability to reason about software design, algorithms, and performance trade-offs at a system level.
Strong written communication skills and comfort working asynchronously in an all-remote, distributed team.
Self-directed work style with effective organizational skills and the ability to manage priorities as a "manager of one".
Alignment with GitLab's values, including transparency, collaboration, inclusion, and contribution to open source.
Openness to learning and applying new tools and approaches, including transferable experience from related data, infrastructure, or developer tooling domains.
Willingness to participate in our
tier 2 dabase on-call rotation
in your time zone.
The
Database Excellence Group
is a remote, agile backend team that builds and maintains the frameworks, patterns, and tooling that enable GitLab teams to work confidently with data at scale across all application datastores. As part of the broader Data Engineering organization, we focus on data scalability, health, and developer enablement for both GitLab.com and thousands of self-managed deployments, collaborating closely with infrastructure, software delivery, and analytics stages to ensure data changes are safe, performant, and compatible across diverse environments. We are independent, self-organized contributors, and we collaborate asynchronously across regions. We are currently expanding our mission from proactively identifying and addressing saturation points in GitLab.com infrastructure to also delivering scalability features and data health initiatives to self-managed customers.

The Senior Software Development Team Coordinator (Thailand) is the operational right hand of the Thailand Team Leader within the Sitebuilders Chiang Mai team. This role supports the Team Leader to operate at a strategic and technical level — by owning the people rhythm and day-to-day operational layer of the Thailand hub. The Software Development Team Coordinator reports directly to the Thailand Team Leader and works in close partnership to ensure strong team operations, delivery consistency, and people development across the Thailand hub. This role is not intended to act as a buffer between the Team Leader and the team, but rather as a strong operational partner who increases the effectiveness of both. Success in this role is measured by the health and performance of the team, as well as by the Team Leader’s ability to focus on high-impact strategic and technical responsibilities.
Responsibilities
People Leadership & Team Development
• Serve as the primary people manager for Thailand-based engineers — owning regular 1:1s, feedback cycles, and individual development plans in close coordination with the Team Leader.
• Monitor team morale, identify and report risks early, and address interpersonal issues with discretion before they escalate to the Team Leader.
• Support engineers' career progression by identifying growth opportunities and skill gaps, aligned with the Team Leader and UXM Architect’s technical direction.
• Lead onboarding coordination for new Thailand-based hires, ensuring a smooth transition into the team's ways of working.
• Build and reinforce a team culture of ownership, initiative, and continuous improvement — consistent with the Team Leader's vision for the team.
Delivery & Operational Coordination
• Track Kanban progress across the Thailand team, ensuring blockers are surfaced and resolved without pulling the Team Leader away from technical priorities.
• Manage day-to-day task allocation and priority adjustments in fast-switching delivery cycles within a Kanban system.
• Compile and deliver structured monthly reports to upper management layers detailing overall team status, KPI metrics, operational delivery risks, and sensitive people or performance issues. Every identified issue, bottleneck, or risk must be accompanied by a concrete, actionable remediation plan to improve and resolve the situation dynamically.
• Oversee accurate time logging and estimation integrity across the team (including for the Deputy role itself).
Technical Contribution & Stability Support
• Assist the Front-End Team Leader in identifying potential personnel or project risks and help formulate contingency plans.
• Support the Project Anchors and the Stability Unit by ensuring developers are available and focused during critical production fixes.
• Maintain sufficient technical credibility to follow engineering discussions, understand the team’s work, and ask relevant questions. While this role is not the primary technical authority, it is expected to operate confidently and effectively within technical conversations.
• Act as a first-level escalation point for day-to-day operational and process questions, resolving escalations before it reaches the Team Leader.
• Uphold UXM documentation requirements and Definition of Done compliance within the team.
Hiring Support
• Participate in hiring panels for Thailand-based frontend roles, providing structured feedback on culture fit, communication, and working style.
• Assist in scoping role requirements in coordination with the Team Leader.
Requirements
Experience:
At least 2 years of experience in a people management or team coordination role in a tech team.
Preferred Qualifications: Familiarity with Front End frameworks and web technologies (HTML, CSS, JS (React, Angular etc.)). We value the ability to translate technical constraints into project timelines, ensuring you can accurately assess scope and complexity during the planning phase.
• Genuine people leadership instinct — you find energy in developing others, you notice when someone is struggling before they say it, and you handle sensitive conversations with care.
• Organized, dependable, and calm under pressure — the team should feel steadier because you are in the room.
• High level of initiative, ownership, and leadership mindset.
• Strong communication skills in English; able to represent team dynamics and delivery status clearly to the Team Leader and upward when needed.
• iGaming or SaaS platform experience is an advantage.
Here's what we offer:

Impact of a Billing Systems Architect
As an Enterprise Billing Systems Architect at Upsun, you are the technical anchor of our billing infrastructure, playing a vital role in ensuring our revenue operations, pricing structures, and financial integrations run seamlessly as our business scales. Picking up primary ownership from our implementation partner, you serve as the dedicated technical lead bridging Finance, Product, and Engineering.
You’re deeply analytical, systems-minded, and collaborative—someone who thrives on translating complex business, pricing, and accounting rules into reliable system logic. Working downstream from our core engineering and data mediation teams, you ensure the integrity of our Quote-to-Cash (Q2C) platform while continuously optimizing platform performance and automation.
Beyond day-to-day platform administration, you contribute to the long-term evolution of our billing architecture—supporting new pricing model launches, complex usage rating schemes, and financial system integrations. Your attention to detail, technical versatility, and cross-functional mindset ensure our revenue pipeline remains scalable, compliant, and friction-free.
What to expect
Billing Infrastructure & Administration:
Serve as the hands-on technical owner of our BillingPlatform environment, configuring catalogs, price cards, usage rating rules, and automated invoice schedules.
System Operations & Maintenance:
Own ongoing platform health, including system updates, pricing launches, recurring bill-run troubleshooting, sync exception handling, and root-cause issue resolution.
Data Ingestion & Analysis:
Utilize SQL to perform data validation, rating engine auditing, and operational reporting while collaborating with Engineering to receive mediated usage data (e.g., via DigitalRoute or Kafka).
Integrations & API Management:
Maintain and optimize clean, API-driven integrations connecting BillingPlatform to upstream CRMs (e.g. Salesforce), downstream ERP/GL tools (e.g., NetSuite), and payment gateways (e.g., Stripe).
Revenue Recognition Alignment:
Partner closely with Accounting to ensure system rating rules, revenue schedules, and general ledger mappings satisfy ASC 606 and IFRS 15 compliance standards.
Cross-Functional Collaboration:
Gather technical and operational requirements directly from Accounting, Finance, Sales Ops, and Product teams, translating their vision into sustainable platform configuration.
Data Integrity & Migration:
Maintain billing data continuity and manage subscription data updates or migrations without disrupting ongoing financial operations or revenue recognition flows.
What you bring
Q2C Platform Experience:
Proven hands-on experience configuring and administering enterprise Quote-to-Cash or billing platforms (e.g., Zuora, Salesforce Revenue Cloud/CPQ, NetSuite Billing, Aria Systems, or BillingPlatform).
Data & Technical Skills:
Strong proficiency with SQL for querying and auditing billing data, alongside a solid grasp of REST APIs, webhooks, and ETL workflows.
Modern Pricing Expertise:
Experience supporting complex SaaS or infrastructure pricing models—such as PLG, hybrid commitment-plus-usage, tiered rates, and consumption-based/metered billing.
Revenue Recognition Knowledge:
Practical understanding of rev rec fundamentals (ASC 606 / IFRS 15) and how accounting rules dictate billing engine design.
Cross-Functional Communication:
Ability to bridge technical language and financial business logic, effectively collaborating with engineering teams and accounting stakeholders alike.
Problem Solving & Troubleshooting:
A methodical approach to diagnosing system sync errors, rating anomalies, and integration edge cases to ensure operational continuity.

The Vault is an MPC-based crypto custody platform for institutional and retail clients, running threshold signing across HSM and Ledger hardware. We're scaling toward Series A, launching our productized platform in 2026, and publishing original cryptographic research alongside the product.
We're hiring a Staff Engineer to design and ship the custody platform's hardest backend code. This is a hands-on IC role with real technical leadership — no people management — where you drive non-trivial initiatives through code, RFCs, and mentorship.
You'll shape architecture in your area of ownership; platform-wide decisions sit with technical leadership. We're AI-forward (Claude Code, Cursor, Codex), and we need engineers who can read AI-generated code critically and catch what it misses — not just prompt it.
You'll naturally gravitate toward either the security-critical core (MPC, threshold signing, HSM/Ledger integration, key lifecycle) or the faster-moving periphery (chain adapters, integrations, APIs/SDKs).
What you'll do
Design, write, and ship critical platform components: policy engine, signing orchestration, key lifecycle workflows, recovery flows, approvals, audit trails, multi-tenant wallet and account services.
Lead non-trivial cross-cutting initiatives in your area — through written RFCs, design reviews, and code, not through hierarchy.
Build high-load, multi-tenant SaaS systems: tenant isolation, quotas, rate limits, backpressure, concurrency control, predictable latency under spikes.
Distributed systems & reliability: idempotency, retries, outbox/inbox, event-driven workflows, sagas and state machines, replay, graceful degradation.
Security-by-design: least privilege, secret handling, mTLS/JWT, tamper-evident logs, audit-ready data models — designed for SOC 2, ISO 27001, and DORA scope from day one.
Performance & data: profiling, load testing, benchmarking, contention analysis, GC tuning; strong relational modelling (Postgres or equivalent), migrations, indexing, clear consistency boundaries.
AI-assisted development as a core competency: ship production code with Claude Code, Cursor, and Codex; build the prompt and agent patterns that work for your area; contribute to the company's AI engineering practices; know when to use AI heavily (periphery, integrations, tests, docs) and when not to (cryptographic core, signing paths) where blind generation is unsafe.
Set patterns and shared libraries for the services your area touches; raise the bar through code review and example.
Own features end-to-end: design notes / RFCs, code, tests, observability, rollout, on-call. No "throw it over the wall" handoffs.
Mentor senior engineers: your reviews and your written designs are the strongest signal to the rest of the team.
Requirements
Must-have experience
Strong CS fundamentals — our primary screening criterion. You can reason from first principles about concurrency, distributed systems, consistency models, networking, and OS behaviour. You know not just what locks and channels do, but why and when. You understand what's happening under the hood, not only at the API level.
Ownership mindset. You've owned non-trivial production systems end-to-end — design, ship, measure, improve, on-call. You don't wait to be told what to do, and you don't ship code you don't understand.
10+ years backend engineering, including 3+ years operating at Staff level (or equivalent senior IC scope). Strong production experience in a modern systems language — Go, Rust, Java, C++, or comparable. Hands-on Go experience, or genuine readiness to ramp on Go in the first month.
Track record of Staff-level technical leadership through code, RFCs, and influence — without formal authority over teams. You can point to RFCs you wrote that the team adopted, initiatives you drove without being the manager, patterns you set that outlasted you.
Proven track record building high-load, multi-tenant SaaS in production (HA, incident response, SLOs).
Hands-on with modern backend stacks: gRPC/HTTP, queues/streams, caching, relational databases, Kafka/NATS or equivalent.
Strong testing discipline: unit/integration/contract tests, testability-first design, deterministic CI.
Strong observability habits: structured logging, metrics, tracing, end-to-end production debugging.
REQUIRED: production-grade use of modern AI coding tools (Claude Code, Cursor, Codex, or comparable). You can point at what you've built with them. You read AI-generated code as a hostile reviewer, not a grateful recipient — you have instincts for what AI tends to get wrong, and you don't ship code you couldn't have written yourself.
Nice to have
Exposure to custody, wallets, or signing systems (MPC, HSM, TEE, key management, approvals).
Hardware wallet integration (Ledger).
Multiple blockchain ecosystems (EVM and Bitcoin minimum; Cosmos, Solana, others a plus).
Built custom agents, MCP integrations, or in-repo AI workflows that compounded a team's productivity.
Designed and run evals for AI-generated code (correctness, security, style).
Kubernetes and service mesh in production; SRE practices.
Regulated-environment experience (fintech, security audits, compliance-driven engineering).
Threat modelling and security review participation.
Familiarity with SOC 2, ISO 27001, and DORA — enough to design for them.
What this role is NOT
A people management role.
A pure architecture / whiteboard role. You write production code in this codebase every week, and platform-wide architectural ownership sits elsewhere.
A research-only cryptography role. You collaborate with our Cryptography Researcher; your focus is platform engineering, not protocol design.
Pure feature ticket execution. If you wait to be told what to do, this won't work.
Benefits
A Staff IC role with real technical leadership — no people management, no sprint mechanics gauntlet, no architecture-by-committee.
An AI-forward engineering culture with budget and autonomy for the tooling, models, and agents you need.
Direct peers in cryptography research, security architecture, product, and delivery — you're not the only senior voice in the room.
Fully remote, any time zone with reasonable overlap with EU/CIS hours.
Competitive comp at the Staff engineer band; equity participation; full benefits.
A product approaching Series A with paying institutional customers and a published cryptographic research line
