About the Project
Project Hydrus is a scripted and conversational audio data collection project. The recordings produced help build natural, everyday-sounding synthesized voices for conversational AI products — voices that sound like real people talking, not scripted performances.
As Session Director, you'll lead live recording sessions with Voice Contributors, guiding them through scripted scenarios to produce natural, conversational-quality audio. This hands-on role blends creative direction, coaching, and technical audio judgment — making scripted material sound authentic and unscripted, rather than recited, while keeping sessions moving at a natural pace.
What You'll Do
- Direct voice performers through scripted scenarios, coaching for natural, conversational delivery rather than verbatim recitation.
- Build quick scene context for performers (who, where, why) and improvise to fill narrative or dialogue gaps live, keeping sessions flowing naturally.
- Adapt scripted wording for natural phrasing and regional/dialect authenticity as needed.
- Monitor and correct technical audio quality in real time: mic technique, pacing, clarity, and background noise.
- Manage session pacing to meet recording targets without sacrificing performance quality, and maintain organized notes on adjustments and retakes.
- Create a supportive, low-pressure environment for performers, including those with limited prior voice experience.

- Demonstrated ability to give clear, specific, actionable performance direction.
- Strong working knowledge of basic recording/mic technique (proximity, plosives, room noise, levels).
- Comfortable improvising and adjusting scripted material on the spot.

About the Project
Project Hydrus is a scripted and conversational audio data collection project. We're looking for native-level speakers who can deliver natural, everyday-sounding speech — recordings that hold up whether you're reading a script or speaking spontaneously.
Please note: the recordings you produce may be used to create synthesized, AI-generated voices for conversational AI products. Full details on how your data is collected, used, shared, and retained are set out in a Consent Form, which you'll review and sign before any paid session recording begins.
What You'll Do If Selected:
- Two supervised sessions of approximately 4 hours each, guided in real time by a Session Director on a separate recording platform.
- Record scripted material in a natural, conversational tone — faithfully, without a polished, performed, or “announcer” delivery.
- Record unscripted, spontaneous speech on a given topic, matching the same warmth and pace as your scripted takes.
- Set up and manage your own recording space and equipment for session recording.
- Deliver all recordings entirely in the required language (with specific dialect), without code-switching into other languages or dialects.
What We're Looking For
Required
- Experience as a voice actor, actor, or theater performer, or a comparable performance background.
- Native or native-equivalent fluency in the required language (with specific dialect).
- Access to a quiet recording space, free of echo and background noise (acoustically treated for session recording, if selected).
- Owns or will acquire a dedicated, professional-grade microphone for the audition (e.g. RODE NT-USB Mini, Blue Yeti), upgrading to a qualifying USB condenser or XLR mic + audio interface for session recording if selected. Built-in laptop mics, AirPods, earbuds, and headsets are not accepted at any stage.
- Owns closed-back monitoring headphones (required for session recording if selected).
- Comfortable both self-directing for the audition and taking live direction from a Session Director in guided sessions.
Preferred (nice to have, not required)
- Professional voice-over experience (dubbing/ADR, audiobook, podcasting) in a conversational rather than commercial/announcer register.
- Baseline audio hygiene: comfortable setting mic distance and catching noise, clipping, or distortion yourself.
- An existing home recording setup already treated for sound.
Your Data & Privacy
Before any session recording, you'll be asked to review and sign a Consent Form covering how your voice recordings are collected, used (including to train synthesized/AI voice models), shared with approved partners, retained, and how to exercise your data rights (access, correction, deletion, and more, depending on where you live). If you'd like to review these terms before applying, contact us and we'll share a copy in advance.

Together with our partners, we’re helping customers break free from the restrictive, overpriced legacy solutions that hold them back, and blaze forward with the full power of the open cloud in their hands.
Founded in 2007, we scaled the business with less than $3 million in outside funding until 2021, when we did a traditional IPO on the Nasdaq stock exchange. Today, Backblaze generates over $100m in revenue and is the leading specialized storage cloud - managing over three billion gigabytes of data storage for 500K+ customers in 175+ countries, including businesses, developers, IT professionals, and individuals.

Professional experience incorporating AI-assisted development tools (Gemini, Cursor, Claude Code, or similar)
Comfortable with all aspects of the software development lifecycle, including design, implementation, testing, and rollout
Exhibits curiosity and seeks to understand before offering solutions
Communicates proactively in a remote environment by keeping the team informed, surfacing blockers early, and moving work forward

Check out our Careers https://careers.circle.so/ page for more about working at Circle.
ABOUT THE ROLE
The AI Quality engineering team at Circle owns the foundation for measuring, diagnosing, and improving the quality of Circle's AI-powered features. This team focuses on building the infrastructure to measure, diagnose, and improve production AI systems, rather than ML research or model training.
We're looking for a Lead Engineer to help us build out the evaluation frameworks, observability tooling, and diagnostic infrastructure that tell us whether our AI Agents are working well, where to improve them, and how to make them faster and more cost-efficient.
This is a hands-on player-coach role. You’ll also lead and manage the AI Quality engineering team, with an ambitious and growing roadmap.
If you're excited about making AI systems work reliably, efficiently, and at scale, this is for you.
WHAT YOU'LL BE DOING
- Build and own our evaluation infrastructure. Design the CI/CD pipelines, scorers, and datasets that tell us whether Circle's AI agents (planners, tool-callers, and sub-agents) are actually working, from a single tool call to a full multi-turn conversation.
- Diagnose exactly where quality breaks down. Trace failures across the agent pipeline including plan creation vs. execution, tool selection, tool trajectory in complex areas like workflows, site builder, and analytics. Turn what you find into prototypes that solve the issue or identify priorities for AI core engineering can help.
- Grow the datasets that make evaluation possible. Stand up annotation workflows and build out AI-generated and simulated conversations so we can cover more of the product faster than manual labeling alone.
- Run structured experiments across prompts, models, and the agent harness. Evaluate new and open-source models against our production baseline, build the framework we use to decide when to shift models, and chase cost and latency wins through model swaps, caching, and routing by plan complexity.
- Lead and grow the AI Quality engineering team. Set technical direction and manage day-to-day priorities, all while staying hands-on in the code yourself.
- Partner closely with AI Core engineering. Work with the engineers building Circle's AI products so they have real confidence that their changes are actually improving quality, not just shipping.
WHAT YOU'LL NEED TO BE SUCCESSFUL
- 7+ years of experience building and shipping production software, ideally including LLM-powered agents that take real actions in a product. You've worked on complex, tool-using systems (multiple tools, planning or orchestration, sub-agents) not just simple, single-turn assistants, and you can walk us through something you shipped and how you knew it was actually working.
- Comfortable in Ruby on Rails / Python or ready to pick them up quickly. Ruby on Rails is our production system and the foundation that Circle’s AI Agents are built on and proficiency in Python is a strong plus, especially for the data and evaluation side of the work.
- Experience building evaluation or observability infrastructure for ML/AI systems. You've built eval pipelines, scorers, dashboards, or CI/CD for evals before and have experience with evaluation frameworks like Braintrust, LangSmith, or similar.
- Experience designing datasets, annotation workflows, or labeling pipelines for ML/AI evaluation. You know how to turn raw examples into a dataset you can trust through human annotation, AI-generated data, or simulation.
- Learn fast, experiment aggressively, and thrive in a highly dynamic environment. You’ll need to be comfortable running a lot of experiments and letting the results settle the argument, including the ones that don't work (which will be many of them in the beginning).
- Comfortable in a fast-paced environment with ambiguity. You’ll need to learn and pick up new technologies when projects require it.
- Strong alignment with our company values https://circle.so/careers.
- You are proficient in English (spoken, written, and reading) at a CEFR Level C2 https://magoosh.com/english-speaking/english-proficiency-levels-a-guide-to-determining-your-level/ / ILR Level 5 https://www.govtilr.org/.

About GiveDirectly
What if the most effective way to fight poverty was also the simplest: give people money and trust them to decide what they need?
Since 2011, GiveDirectly has proven that idea at scale. We’ve delivered more than $1B in cash directly to 2+ million people living in poverty and crisis across 15 countries, and rigorous research shows the results: healthier kids, stronger businesses, sturdier homes, and more resilient families and local economies. Cash is now widely recognized as one of the most scalable, cost-effective, and dignified forms of aid.
Our ambition goes beyond our own programs. We want cash to become the benchmark for aid, much as the index fund became the benchmark for investing, so that every aid dollar is held to one question:
is this doing more good than giving the money directly to people living in poverty?
We’re growing fast, and this is a rare and important moment to join.
We expect to hit $1B in revenue in 2026 with significant growth forecast for 2027. At the same time we are building a new technology stack and operating model designed for a roughly 10x change in scale, and we are actively pursuing partnerships with major funders to move even more money in bigger ways, to people who need it. We are known for our extensive integration of technology into field processes; our quantitative approach to performance measurement; and our commitment to rigorous, independent, experimental evaluation of our impact, with multiple Randomized Control Trials completed and others in progress.
How we work
Our team spans 20+ countries and 69 languages. Our culture is candid, analytical, and non-hierarchical. We expect high ownership and give people real responsibility early. Our values are central to how we hire, work, and grow, and they are deliberately opinionated:
Recipients first.
Recipients’ preferences come before those of donors or ourselves.
Team next.
We optimize for organizational success, not individual success.
Be proactively candid.
We say what we believe and share information openly.
Create positive energy.
We aim to be a source of energy for colleagues, not a drain.
Think rigorously; act quickly.
We reason from first principles, then act rather than debate.
Know yourself and grow.
We own our imperfections and seek feedback to grow.
Accept reality. Propose solutions.
We focus on what can change and bring solutions, not just problems.
Be productively ambitious.
We take risks for step-change impact, not incremental progress.
If they describe how you like to work and they energize you, this could be a great fit.

About this role:
We believe technology will play a critical role in enabling the next generation of cash delivery operations: from identifying recipients without needing to knock on doors to a modern payments infrastructure that gets dollars in recipients’ hands faster and more scalable. We are seeking a Technical Program Associate responsible for implementing and managing the technology used across our programs - including systems for recipient data collection, verification, payments, and monitoring.
In this role, you will own all technology-related aspects of new project launches: working with our operations team to define and implement program requirements, project managing the implementation across multiple stakeholders, and analyzing, structuring, and acting on program data. You are a systems thinker who is comfortable assessing tradeoffs and deriving and communicating data-driven insights. You enjoy learning about technology in a variety of business contexts. You naturally take ownership, can navigate unfamiliar settings, and enjoy both building and managing ops. You can excel at both 10,000 feet as well as in the weeds of complex problems.
Reports to:
Senior Technical Program Manager
Level
: Open to Associate or Manager, depending on the candidate. We would rather find the right person than fill a predetermined level. A candidate with deeper experience, stronger technical skills, and the judgment to run their own projects and think critically and propositionally on project designs will be brought in at the higher end, with correspondingly more independence.
Location:
At this stage of GiveDirectly’s growth and scale, we’re prioritizing hiring in the countries below, where we can employ you through a GD entity or an established employer of record: Cameroon, Canada, Colombia, DRC, Germany, Ghana, Kenya, Malawi, Mozambique, Netherlands, Nigeria, Poland, Portugal, Rwanda, South Africa, Spain, Turkey, Uganda, United Kingdom, and United States. This list reflects where our employment infrastructure is established today, and may evolve as we grow. If you’re based elsewhere and not open to relocation, we may not be able to consider your application for this role right now, but we’d encourage you to check back. Please also note that regardless of location, we expect 3 hours of daily overlap with the East Africa timezone.
Travel Requirement:
Must be able to travel ~1-2 times per year to one of our countries of operation for team retreats or field visits.
Priority Application Deadline: November 1st, 2026
What you’ll do:
Manage end-to-end technical delivery for program launches - leading scoping, requirements gathering, system configuration and implementation, QA and testing, troubleshooting, and closeout
Collaborate with Operations, Product, Research, Engineering, and Data teams to ensure systems are aligned with program objectives and work seamlessly in field conditions
Debug and resolve issues across multiple layers of our technology stack, including our recipient database and offline survey app
Scope and manage cross-cutting systems improvements to improve efficiency, scale, and/or recipient experience, with mentorship
Ensure all systems comply with GD’s standards for data protection, privacy, and financial controls
Manage technical training and onboarding for operations staff and collaborators
Lead retrospectives on program launches and technical incidents to contribute to continued system improvements
What you’ll bring:
Exceptional alignment with
GiveDirectly Values
and active demonstration of our core competencies: emotional intelligence, problem solving, project management, follow-through, and fostering inclusivity. We welcome and strongly encourage applications from candidates who have personal or professional experience in the low-income and/or historically marginalized communities that we serve.
Language Requirement: fluent in English.
3+ years of professional experience; we welcome a wide range of relevant backgrounds (e.g. project management, product management, data analytics, international development, management consulting)
Strong data skills: able to leverage tools to extract, clean, manipulate, and analyze data to make operational decisions.
Strong project management experience: experience in managing timelines, stakeholders, and complex deliverables.
Deep comfort with Microsoft Excel/Google Sheets.
Intermediate experience using a programming or scripting language (most commonly Python at GD) to automate workflows, validate data, or implement business logic. Note: This is not an engineering or data science job.
Significant interest in technology, systems design and building.
High attention to detail and strong instincts for analysis and validating data creatively and rigorously.
Structured approach to problem-solving and a drive to uncover and fix root causes rather than surface-level issues.
Ability to collaborate inclusively with stakeholders across varied social, national, and cultural backgrounds, including communicating technical concepts to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
Preferred, not required
: Experience working with relational databases (e.g. SQL).
Preferred, not required: Proficiency in one or more languages spoken in the countries where GiveDirectly operates (e.g Swahili, French, Portuguese). These skills are beneficial for working directly with field teams and understanding recipient experience.
Compensation
At GiveDirectly, we strive to pay our employees generously and equitably. We use an accredited third party salary aggregator to calculate what we believe to be competitive pay based on role, location, and cost of living. We also have a no negotiation policy to ensure we are paying staff equitably across roles. Read more about our compensation philosophy
