About the role
As a Senior Backend Engineer, you will design, implement, and evolve product capabilities while solving high-scope backend problems and influencing the technical and product direction of our teams. You will move beyond "assigned work" to actively improve the quality, reliability, and performance of our systems. You will work across product, frontend, infrastructure, data, and security boundaries, making sound architectural trade-offs, communicating complex ideas clearly in an asynchronous environment, and helping define the standards for a high-scale, global product.
Why you’ll love this role
High Impact:
You aren't just shipping features; you are shaping the architecture of a global platform used by millions.
Technical Agency:

Autonomy:
You will thrive in our remote-first, asynchronous organization, where clear written communication and self-direction are the pillars of success.
User-Centric Collaboration:
You’ll partner closely with PMs and designers to shape requirements, ensuring every technical decision delivers genuine value to our users.
What you’ll do
Drive Technical Direction:
Design and ship moderate to complex backend features with minimal guidance, making pragmatic choices between modular-monolith code, shared components, or independently operated services.
Raise the Bar:
Advocate for product quality, security, availability, and performance. You will define backend standards for style, maintainability, testing, APIs, and operational readiness.
Mentor & Lead:
Mentor associate and intermediate engineers, remove technical blockers, and improve team delivery practices through code and design reviews.

What you’ll bring
Deep Backend Expertise:
A strong command of backend architecture, APIs, data systems, and performance tuning in a complex product or service environment.
Adaptability:
Proficiency in modern backend languages and a deep understanding of systems programming. We value the ability to learn and adapt over mastery of a single language.

Experience designing or evolving modular backend boundaries, bounded contexts, and migration-safe architectures.
Influence:
Ability to lead through influence, technical judgment, and clear written communication, effectively bridging the gap between product needs and technical reality.
Agentic AI Expertise:
Proven experience building or operating agentic systems in production—moving beyond prompt engineering to architecting loops, tool-use, and error-handling strategies that ensure reliability at scale.

An overview of this role
As a Senior CX Platform Engineer, you'll help GitLab's Customer Experience (CX) teams hand real work to artificial intelligence (AI). You'll use Claude Code and GitLab Duo Agent Platform as your default development tools, designing agentic workflows and Model Context Protocol (MCP) servers with production testing, security, and shared ownership. This is a software engineering role, not ticket-taking internal IT, AI evangelism disconnected from shipped code, or customer-billable Professional Services delivery.
What you'll do
Use Claude Code, GitLab Duo, and other coding agents as your primary development environment for planning, implementation, refactoring, testing, reviews, and documentation. Run multiple agents in parallel on well-scoped tasks, critically review their output, and own every line that reaches production.
Build and maintain the team's agent harness, including shared AGENTS.md conventions, skills, slash commands, hooks, subagent definitions, and continuous integration checks. Measure and share what works, publish reusable patterns, and retire those that don't.
Ship agents and multi-step workflows for account research, success planning, scoping, status reporting, and customer onboarding. Package them as skills and plugins for non-engineers using Claude, Claude in Slack, and GitLab Duo Agent Platform.
Build MCP servers and connectors for governed access to GitLab, Salesforce, Gainsight, Kantata, Thought Industries, Gong, Snowflake, and other enterprise systems. Add evaluations, tracing, and human-in-the-loop checkpoints to keep internal and customer-facing agents measurable, auditable, and safe with customer data.
Evolve the CX Application Platform's gateway, Amazon Web Services (AWS) infrastructure, including Elastic Container Service (ECS), Relational Database Service (RDS), and Lambda, Terraform configuration, application scaffold, and deployment path. Own applications such as PS Compass, Congregate, and GitLab University and its integrations, documenting build-versus-buy and consolidate-or-sunset decisions.
Ship production-quality Python and TypeScript through GitLab continuous integration and continuous delivery (CI/CD), with tests, observability, security review, and runbooks. Design every application for handoff, with documentation, monitoring, and shared ownership.
Prototype with Customer Success, Digital Success, Professional Services, Education Services, and Training in days, not quarters. Help CX team members bring their own applications to production, and turn field learning into reusable reference implementations, development paths, and enablement.
Contribute upstream to GitLab and share product feedback with Product and Engineering. Mentor engineers and non-engineers on agentic development and raise the team's code review bar.
What you'll bring
Experience building and operating production software, owning multi-quarter work from ambiguity to production, choosing reusable platform solutions over one-off customization where appropriate, and designing for handoff.
Daily, hands-on use of coding agents such as Claude Code, Cursor, Codex, GitLab Duo, or similar on production work. You can show how they've changed what you ship and how you maintain quality.
Experience building with large language models (LLMs) beyond chat, including tool use, MCP servers, agent loops, context and retrieval design, prompt and workflow design, and evaluations.
Strong Python skills with FastAPI or Flask and TypeScript skills with Vue or React, including application programming interface (API) design, authentication, authorization, and secure handling of customer and business data.
Hands-on experience with AWS ECS, RDS, and Lambda, Terraform, Docker, and applications running behind single sign-on (SSO), such as Okta.
Experience integrating enterprise systems through Representational State Transfer (REST) and GraphQL APIs, and fluency with Git, merge requests, and CI/CD.
Experience translating non-engineering stakeholders' workflows into technical plans and writing clear asynchronous design documents, decision records, and enablement materials. You align with GitLab's values and are willing to use GitLab for your own work.
Optional experience includes agent harness customization; the GitLab Development Kit, Duo Agent Platform custom agents and flows, or AI Catalog publishing; enterprise agent governance and data controls; customer success, professional services, or learning platforms such as Salesforce, Gainsight, Kantata, or Thought Industries; professional services economics and customer success metrics; Snowflake or similar warehouses; and technical writing, talks, or open source contributions on agentic development.
We welcome interest from candidates with varying levels of experience; you don't need to meet every nice-to-have to apply.
About the team
CX Platform Engineering builds and runs CX Applications for Customer Success, Digital Success, Professional Services, Education Services, and Training. We own the CX Application Platform's gateway and infrastructure alongside our application portfolio: GitLab University, the Foundational Onboarding Agent in GitLab Duo Agent Platform, Congregate, PS Compass, and Customer Wins. We build the first version with the people doing the work, turn what we learn into a reusable pattern, then hand it off so it runs without us. We reward leverage, not heroics, and don't leave tools dependent on one person.

You will influence team objectives, technical direction, and long-range goals, helping us solve problems of high scope and complexity.
Innovative Culture:
You will get to experiment with and integrate agentic AI into production engineering workflows, moving beyond simple prompt engineering to build resilient, AI-assisted systems.
Operational Excellence:
Diagnose and prevent performance/reliability issues at scale. Participate in incident response and act as a technical owner where appropriate.
AI Integration:
Use AI in production engineering work to improve outcomes, evaluate its effectiveness, and coach others on responsible, high-judgment use.
Architectural Judgment:
Experience designing or evolving modular backend boundaries, bounded contexts, and migration-safe architectures.
Influence:
Ability to lead through influence, technical judgment, and clear written communication, effectively bridging the gap between product needs and technical reality.
Agentic AI Expertise:
Proven experience building or operating agentic systems in production—moving beyond prompt engineering to architecting loops, tool-use, and error-handling strategies that ensure reliability at scale.

An overview of this role
As the Senior Director, Global Subject Matter Expertise (SME) Solutions Architecture, you will build and lead GitLab's Subject Matter Expert organization: three regional teams in AMER, EMEA and APJ, each covering Security & Compliance, Platform, Core DevSecOps, and AI & Competitive. This team is the depth layer of GitLab's technical selling model. It wins the most complex opportunities, scales product expertise into the Account SA team, and turns field insight into product direction.
This is a leader of leaders role. You will manage three regional SME Managers, not individual contributors, and develop them as leaders in their own right. The SME organization is new, so we are looking for a transformational leader who thrives in ambiguity, builds structure where none exists, and has a track record of standing up high-performing technical teams in fast-growing, evolving businesses.
You will work as a peer to GitLab's regional Solutions Architecture Senior Directors and partner closely with Sales, Customer Success, Product, Engineering, Product Marketing and Sales Operations. Together you will make sure GitLab brings the right depth to the right opportunities, and that what the field learns shapes what GitLab builds next.
What you'll do
Set the strategy, operating model and global standards for the SME organization, aligned to the VP Global SA and GitLab's go-to-market plan.
Build the resourcing model from product-level bookings and consumption targets. Size each product group by region based on where the plan needs specialist coverage.
Act as the field's senior partner to Product Management and Engineering. Run a structured feedback loop that shapes roadmap, launch readiness and early-access programs.
Hire, mentor and develop regional SME Managers and, through them, the full global team.
Own the engagement model with the regional SA Senior Directors, Post-Sales SAs and Customer Success: triage rules, coverage thresholds, the closed-won handoff to Post-Sales SAs, and escalation paths.
Create and improve upon the processes, metrics and KPIs for SME-led technical evaluations, workshops, demos and Proofs of Value.
Partner with CRO staff, regional sales leaders and AVPs on product-category performance, forecast risk and competitive strategy.
Partner with Enablement to drive field readiness for new product launches with Product Marketing and Enablement, including Duo Agent Platform, security and platform offerings.
Build strong relationships with key customers at the technical sponsor and executive level.
Use AI to change how the team works, including deal research, demo creation, PoV automation and knowledge sharing.
Drive organizational transformation by finding gaps early, building structure where none exists, and leading change without waiting for top-down direction.
What you'll bring
5+ years second-line leadership experience (managing managers) in Solutions Architecture, Sales Engineering or a technical specialist organization.
Experience building or scaling a specialist, overlay or global SA team in enterprise SaaS, DevSecOps, security or developer tools.
A record of tying technical-team design to bookings and consumption outcomes, with the data to show it.
The ability to lead through ambiguity and rapid organizational change, bringing clarity and direction while strategy is still forming.
Strong relationships with Product and Engineering leaders, and a history of shaping roadmap from field insight.
Fluency across the software development lifecycle, application security (SAST, DAST, SCA), cloud platforms (AWS, GCP, Azure), Kubernetes and AI-assisted development, including LLM evaluation and production deployment patterns.
Executive presence with technical practitioners, managers and C-level stakeholders.
Proven ability to partner across Sales, Partners, Product, Engineering, Marketing, Customer Success and Professional Services.
A self-starting, entrepreneurial approach. You don't wait for a playbook; you write it.
How you'll be measured
Global product-category commit attainment and consumption growth.
Time from technical win to first workload in customer’s production environment on SME-engaged opportunities compared with non-engaged opportunities.
SME coverage and engagement speed on the top 10% of opportunities.
Account Team capability lift: fewer escalations and more deals handled without an SME over time.
Product impact: field sentiment on the product feedback process along with field-sourced requirements adopted into the roadmap.
Team health: hiring against plan, manager development, engagement and retention.
About the team
The Subject Matter Expertise (SME) organization is part of GitLab's Solutions Architecture team, a trusted technical partner for the field. SMEs bring the deepest product expertise to GitLab's most complex opportunities and carry customer feedback into conversations about product direction, enablement and value messaging. The team is distributed and all-remote, and relies on clear communication, strong judgment and shared operating practices across regions.

- Establish functional and numerical equivalence between reference and edge implementations, profile on-device performance, and debug complex issues spanning algorithms, sensors, firmware, and embedded systems.
- Build reusable tools, test harnesses, profiling infrastructure, and deployment patterns that accelerate future algorithm migrations and enable efficient portability across current and next-generation WHOOP hardware platforms.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- BS/MS in Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, or a related technical field, or equivalent practical experience.
- Strong C/C++ software development experience with embedded, real-time, or resource-constrained systems, including an understanding of memory management, compute limitations, latency, and power constraints.

- Experience profiling and optimizing embedded software for runtime, memory footprint, computational efficiency, and/or power, with strong debugging skills across algorithm and systems boundaries.
- Strong systems thinking and software integration skills, with the ability to understand complex dependencies and collaborate across algorithm, firmware, platform, and other engineering teams to drive technical issues to resolution.
- Experience with one or more relevant embedded optimization technologies or techniques, such as DSP optimization, fixed-point implementation, quantization, model compression, ARM Cortex-M, DSPs, NPUs, RTOS environments, CMSIS-DSP/CMSIS-NN, or TensorFlow Lite Micro.
- Experience with physiological sensing, wearable devices, time-series sensor data, low-power systems, or establishing functional and numerical equivalence between reference and embedded implementations is a plus.
- Strong commitment to embracing and leveraging AI tools in day-to-day tasks, ensuring AI-assisted work aligns with the same high-quality standards as personal contributions.
Interested in the role, but don’t meet every qualification? We encourage you to still apply! At WHOOP, we believe there is much more to a candidate than what is written on paper, and we value character as much as experience. As we continue to build a diverse and inclusive environment, we encourage anyone who is interested in this role to apply.

An overview of this role
As a Staff Renewals Operations Manager at GitLab, you'll help own the operational engine that makes renewals predictable, measurable, and efficient at scale. Reporting to the Director of CX Operations, you'll be the Renewals team's go-to business partner for processes, tooling, forecasting and insights, consumption and subscription data, and the steps required to quote and close a renewal. This is a senior individual contributor role with no direct reports. You'll lead through ownership and influence, connecting teams and workflows, turning ambiguous problems into clear next steps, and driving improvements that others across the revenue organization depend on.
What you'll do
Own and continuously improve the end-to-end renewal operating model; from renewal identification, assignment through risk management, quoting, through to close and post-renewal data hygiene processes.
Develop and improve the operating cadences that guide the renewal business, with a focus on efficiency and process improvement.
Define, maintain, and evolve retention reporting with cross-functional partners, including gross and net retention, churn and downgrade analysis, and the drivers behind each.
Partner with Revenue Technology, Revenue Analytics, Finance, and other stakeholders to improve Salesforce and the systems and data flows supporting customer relationship management (CRM), subscription and entitlement records, quoting, orders, billing, and reporting. Translate business needs into requirements, validate solutions, and strengthen data quality and operational controls.
Simplify and scale the renewal motion through automation, standardized workflows, alerts, playbooks, and self-service insights that reduce manual effort and improve execution consistency.
Support renewals planning and capacity management, including segmentation implementation, coverage models, productivity assumptions, capacity modeling, supporting target setting, and scenario planning.
Own and mature the Renewal Operations case-management program, including intake, triage, routing, service-level visibility, resolution, and root-cause analysis. Requests may include user migrations, de-duplication, Renewal Manager ownership changes, compensation exceptions, and Salesforce or data issues.
Raise the operating standard in your domain by documenting processes, mentoring others on how the renewal motion works, and contributing to broader Revenue Operations initiatives that need the renewals perspective.
What you'll bring
Experience in Renewals Operations, Revenue Operations, Sales Operations, management consulting, strategy, or a similar analytical and problem-solving role, with ownership of operational improvements and cross-functional initiatives.
Hands-on experience with both consumption and subscription renewal motions, including renewal forecasting, retention reporting, and the contractual and process mechanics that govern how renewals close.
Strong critical thinking and structured problem-solving skills. You can break down ambiguous problems into clear workstreams and move them forward.
Strong quantitative and analytical skills. You're highly proficient in Excel or Google Sheets, can build and validate models from scratch, and can translate analysis into clear recommendations and action. Experience with Structured Query Language (SQL) or equivalent data-querying tools is preferred, not required.
Systems thinking and experience using Salesforce for pipeline and renewals reporting. You understand how changes in one part of the go-to-market motion affect others, including how CRM, subscription or entitlement records, quoting, and billing relate to one another, and you design solutions accordingly.
Sound commercial judgment and an understanding of renewal complexity, including co-terming, amendments, expansions, downgrades, price changes, multiyear agreements, auto-renewals, procurement requirements, and approval policies.
Strong cross-functional collaboration skills. You build trust with stakeholders at all levels, including field teams and senior leadership, and influence without direct authority.
Curiosity, sound judgment, and a bias toward action. You learn new domains and tools quickly, move from insight to implementation, and follow through until improvements are adopted and sustained.
About the team
You'll work within CX Operations, partnering closely with Renewals and Customer Success leadership, Sales, Finance, Revenue Technology, and Revenue Analytics. These partnerships connect renewal execution with the processes, systems, and data that support it. In GitLab's all-remote, values-driven environment, documentation, iteration, and cross-functional partnership are core to how you'll work.
