From Fivetran’s founding until now, our mission has remained the same: to make access to data as simple and reliable as electricity. With Fivetran, customer data arrives in their warehouses, canonical and ready to query, with no engineering or maintenance required. We’re proud that more organizations continue to leverage our technology every day to become truly data-driven.
About the Role
We’re looking for a hands-on Senior Engineering Manager to lead the Core team behind dbt V2, dbt’s next-generation engine. This is a backfill role for an engineering leader who can combine strong software-engineering judgment with people leadership, product partnership, and the ability to navigate a highly cross-functional technical area.
The Core team is responsible for building, maintaining, and evolving the Rust-based engine that powers dbt Fusion. The team primarily works on the dbt V2 runtime itself, SQL language features powered by Static Analysis, and new ELT primitives.
The role sits at the center of several parts of the dbt product: the engine and orchestration, the IDE and developer experience, adapters and data warehouses, and our new compute offering, LakeCompute. You’ll help the team make sound technical and product decisions while keeping a stable GA product moving forward.
About the Team
The Core team is part of a broader organization that includes adapters, growth, the VS Code extension, compute, and other closely connected teams. It partners frequently with Product and with the teams responsible for orchestration, IDE experiences, adapters, and LakeCompute.
In this role, you can expect to:
Lead, coach, and develop a fluid team of approximately 8 engineers working on a critical part of the dbt product.
Establish clarity across a technically demanding roadmap with multiple product and engineering stakeholders.
Partner closely with Product to translate ambiguous requirements into realistic engineering scope, sequencing, and estimates.
Help the team balance new feature development, engine maintenance, framework modernization, documentation, and the stability of a GA product.
Guide end-to-end technical design across the engine and its integration points with orchestration, the IDE, adapters, warehouses, and late compute.
Support engineers in making sound tradeoffs across product value, technical quality, performance, compatibility, and delivery risk.
Actively contribute to technical design and implementation alongside the team.
Work with peer engineering leaders to coordinate initiatives that span multiple teams and systems.
Build an environment where engineers can do high-quality work, grow their scope, and take ownership of meaningful technical problems.
Help shape the next phase of dbt Fusion as a language-aware transformation engine used by the broader data community.
Mandatory skills
Experience leading teams through multiple concurrent priorities and diverse integration points.
Strong software-engineering fundamentals and prior experience as a senior/staff engineer, technical lead, or equivalent hands-on technical leader.
Ability to lead or facilitate system design from problem definition through implementation and delivery.
Ability to translate complex or ambiguous product requirements into credible engineering estimates, milestones, and tradeoffs.
Demonstrated judgment in balancing roadmap delivery with reliability, maintainability, technical debt, and product quality.
A hands-on technical orientation, including a willingness and ability to stay close to code and engineering details.
You are a good fit if you have:
Led a software team through the full development lifecycle: discovery, design, implementation, testing, release, operation, and iteration.
Worked on products with substantial technical complexity, integration surfaces, or platform dependencies.
Successfully partnered with Product and other engineering teams to create a stable roadmap and make difficult prioritization decisions.
Experience in data transformation, orchestration, query engines, databases, developer tools, compilers, language tooling, or a closely related area. Direct dbt experience is helpful but not required.
The ability to explain complex technical systems clearly to engineers, product partners, and candidates with different levels of technical depth.
A track record of developing strong engineers while maintaining a high technical bar.
Comfort operating in a fluid environment where team boundaries, priorities, and scope may evolve.
You’ll have an edge if you have:
Experience with Rust or another systems programming language, compilers, query planning, language servers, IDE tooling, or developer platforms.
Experience building or operating data transformation, orchestration, warehouse, or execution systems.
Contributions to open-source projects or experience working with open standards and open technical communities.
Familiarity with ecosystems such as Apache Arrow, Apache Iceberg, DuckDB, ADBC, or related data and execution technologies.
Experience with SQL semantics, query optimization, transpilation across dialects, data lineage, governance, or developer-facing language features.
Experience working in a remote-first or distributed organization with strong written communication practices.
Startup or scale-up experience and comfort wearing multiple hats while the organization evolves.

An overview of this role
This is an overnight shift role with working hours of 12:00am - 7:00am EST.
As a Support Engineer on our U.S. Government Support Engineering team, you operate at the critical intersection of Support and Engineering, enabling public sector organizations and United States government agencies to run GitLab in some of the most secure and constrained environments in the world. Your work directly supports national security missions, including customers operating within FedRAMP-authorized, air-gapped, and classified or semi-classified environments where traditional troubleshooting approaches are not always possible.
In this role, you will engage deeply with GitLab through the command line; analyzing logs, system behavior, and application performance with strong Linux fundamentals and an understanding of how GitLab’s components interact end-to-end. You may partner with Product and Engineering to reproduce and document edge-case defects using sanitized or redacted data, or contribute directly to the product by opening merge requests that resolve customer-impacting issues. Beyond resolving individual cases, you’ll help strengthen GitLab by improving documentation, support workflows, and institutional knowledge, ensuring that lessons learned in highly regulated environments benefit the broader platform; all while working in a fully remote, highly collaborative environment built on trust, autonomy, and shared ownership.
Some examples of our projects:
A tool to quickly analyze strace output
A solution to capture the state of a customer’s server for easier troubleshooting
A functionality to ChatOps to make it easier to identify user accounts on GitLab.com
What you’ll do
Collaborate closely with public sector customers, including U.S. government agencies, the Department of War, and Intelligence Community organizations, to diagnose, troubleshoot, and resolve complex issues in GitLab deployments operating under strict security, compliance, and operational constraints.
Perform deep, hands-on technical investigations using Linux command-line tooling and GitLab internals to analyze logs, system performance, and application behavior, often with limited telemetry or incomplete datasets. You will trace issues across infrastructure, application, and code paths to identify root causes, recommend mitigations, and drive durable fixes; frequently partnering with GitLab Product, Development, and Infrastructure teams to ensure outcomes that meet both mission and platform reliability requirements.
Create and update clear, reusable documentation and support content based on real customer interactions to improve self-service and reduce repeated issues.
Participate in regular
pairing sessions
with other Support Engineers and act as a
stable counterpart
to cross-functional teams to share knowledge and improve support processes.
Contribute to building and refining internal support tools and workflows, including automation and troubleshooting utilities, to make diagnosing and resolving issues more efficient.
Participate in weekday and weekend on-call rotations, providing timely emergency support for self-managed customers operating in restricted and compliance-focused environments.
Support the growth of the team by reviewing applications and assessments, and participating in interviews and hiring decision discussions.
What you’ll bring
Due to government security requirements, you must be a United States Citizen (defined as any individual who is a citizen of the United States by law, birth, or naturalization) to be eligible for this position
Experience managing customer-facing cases across the full support lifecycle, from initial inquiry and triage through reproduction, escalation, and resolution
Strong Linux systems administration knowledge, with the ability to troubleshoot performance and configuration issues in complex environments
Familiarity with AI/LLM-powered developer tooling and gateway architectures (for example GitLab Duo, AI gateway configurations, or similar model-serving/proxy layers), including how they're deployed and troubleshot in self-managed or air-gapped environments
Ability to use scripting languages (preferably Ruby or Bash) and work within model-view-controller frameworks (preferably Ruby on Rails) to investigate and resolve issues
Practical experience with Git and continuous integration/continuous delivery (CI/CD) workflows
Skill in creating and maintaining clear, accurate support content and technical documentation
Ability to explain complex technical topics in a clear, empathetic way to customers and coworkers with varying technical backgrounds
Familiarity with DevOps practices and container-orchestration technologies such as OpenShift and Kubernetes
Understanding of common information security and compliance concepts and controls (for example DISA STIG and SELinux), and eligibility to work on United States federal customer environments as required for this role
About the team
At GitLab Federal, LLC, the U.S. Government Support Engineering team partners with public sector organizations and United States government agencies to support GitLab in highly secure, mission-critical environments. Our work directly enables national security outcomes, supporting customers across the Intelligence Community, Department of War, and other federal, state, and local government entities operating within regulated and restricted boundaries.
We are embedded within Support Engineering and work closely with Product, Development, Infrastructure, Customer Success, and Sales to solve complex, high-impact technical challenges. Our team frequently dives into code, logs, and architectural behavior to understand not just what is failing, but why; especially in environments with sanitized data, limited visibility, and strict compliance controls such as FedRAMP. We collaborate asynchronously across time zones and through structured pairing and discussion to share knowledge, strengthen solutions, and continuously improve how GitLab supports secure, air-gapped, and regulated deployments, while upholding GitLab's standards for rigor, transparency, and technical excellence.

What this role is about
You'll manage a team of Assigned Support Engineers who provide relationship-based technical support to GitLab's biggest enterprise customers. ASEs work proactively with customers to find root causes and prevent repeat issues, which is different from working a ticket queue. They also turn their actions and activity into outcomes and deliverables that show customers the ROI they get from GitLab.
You'll build a team that works independently, owns issues from start to finish, and knows when to ask for help. When a customer relationship is in trouble, you'll work alongside the account teams to bring it back to health. You'll also help improve the ASE program in ways that matter to customers and to the company.
What you'll do
Hire, coach, and develop ASEs. Hold regular 1:1s, give direct feedback, deal with performance issues early, and build a team where people feel safe raising problems.
Pay attention to engagement and retention, and coach the team on GitLab's values and operating principles.
Train ASEs to run technical interviews so the hiring pipeline doesn't depend on you.
Set clear goals and expectations, track progress across onboarding, relationships, escalations, and KPIs, and connect the team's work to company priorities. Help ASEs prioritize across accounts when everything feels urgent.
Lead escalations from start to finish. Work with Engineering, Product, Sales, and Customer Success to get the right people moving, and keep the customer informed and confident in the plan.
Work alongside the account teams to bring at-risk customers back to health, including renewal and expansion risk driven by support concerns. Build the recovery plan, drive the technical side, and report on progress until the customer is stable.
Help ASEs translate their actions and activity into outcomes, deliverables, and ROI, and present that to customers and executives in clear decks that cover what happened, what you're doing about it, and what comes next.
Work with the ASE leadership team on initiatives that improve the program and customer outcomes, and see yours through to results.
Partner with Sales, Customer Success, CSMs, Product, and Engineering to push for what customers need, and contribute utilization and onboarding data to capacity and headcount planning with Finance and sales leadership.
Document how the team works and find ways to make it more efficient through tools, process changes, and automation. Use AI well in your own work and coach ASEs to do the same.
What you'll bring
5+ years in technical support, with at least 2 years managing customer-facing technical teams.
Experience with high-touch or assigned support for enterprise customers. Professional services delivery counts. Experience across Self-Managed, GitLab Dedicated, and GitLab.com is a plus.
A strong record of handling escalations with both internal teams and customers. You stay calm, keep people aligned, and know when to bring in leadership.
The ability to turn a complicated or nuanced situation into a clear written story and tie activity to outcomes with numbers.
A customer-centric approach balanced with good judgment about what the service, the team, and the company can deliver, and experience working with account teams to bring struggling customers back to health.
A record of getting work done across teams through influence and strong working relationships. You can work with Sales, CS, and account teams to set clear expectations for the ASE service and find the right path for each customer.
Willingness to be available outside standard hours, including weekends, for the occasional critical escalation or customer-impacting incident.
Comfort with ambiguity and change. You keep a team steady while priorities, processes, and the program evolve, and you explain the reasons for changes so people stay engaged.
A strong technical foundation to guide engineers in complex, production-critical environments, including Linux system administration and web application development concepts. Familiarity with Git, DevOps practices, or GitLab is helpful.
A history of developing engineers at different skill levels through real feedback, mentoring, and clear expectations.
Process skills that make a team more efficient without adding bureaucracy, and comfort leading a remote, globally distributed team using metrics and customer feedback.

What makes Tenable such a great place to work?
Ask a member of our team and they’ll answer, “Our people!” We work together to build and innovate best-in-class cybersecurity solutions for our customers; all while creating a culture of belonging, respect, and excellence where we can be our best selves. When you’re part of our #OneTenable team, you can expect to partner with some of the most talented and passionate people in the industry, and have the support and resources you need to do work that truly matters. We deliver results that exceed expectations and we win together!
Applicants must be authorized to work for any employer in the U.S. without sponsorship. We are unable to provide sponsorship for work visas of any kind at the time of hire, or at any point during employment. This includes, but is not limited to: F1-OPT, F1-CPT, H-1B, TN, J-1, etc
Your Role:
The Senior Manager, Technical Excellence & Escalations leads the two teams that sit between Technical Support and the rest of the business: the global Technical Excellence team, staffed by our Technical Leads, and the global Escalations Engineering team.
Both produce Tenable's earliest and clearest signal about product supportability and customer risk. Both have historically produced that signal faster than the organization could act on it. This role exists to close that gap.
This is not a queue-management job. The Senior Manager is accountable for two outcomes: turning Technical Lead expertise and escalation findings into tracked change with Product and Engineering, and running one escalations practice that behaves identically in AMER, EMEA, and APJ.
The role sits within Operations & Scale and works in close partnership with the Sr. Director, who sets overall strategy and carries the executive narrative. The Senior Manager owns the operating model, the day-to-day practice, and the working-level relationships with Product and Engineering that make change actually happen. They lead senior individual contributors who are already force multipliers — which makes this a job about influence and orchestration, not direction.
Who You Are:
An orchestrator, not a bottleneck.
You create the conditions for senior experts to influence the organization instead of routing their work through yourself.
Technically credible.
You have the depth to earn respect from Principal-level engineers and to challenge an Engineering assessment that doesn't hold up.
A clear communicator under pressure.
You can hold a room containing both a frustrated customer and an Engineering lead, and translate technical detail into business consequence.
A systems thinker.
You are drawn to the pattern behind the escalation. You would rather fix the class of problem than win the individual case.
Comfortable influencing without authority.
Much of what this role must accomplish depends on teams you don't own.
Effective remotely.
You build trust and hold a team together without relying on being in the room, and you communicate in writing well enough that distance isn't a handicap.
A developer of senior talent.
You are energized by growing people who are already very good, and you give direct feedback.
Your Opportunity:
Technical Excellence Team
Run the operating model and product coverage plan for the global Technical Excellence team — every strategic product has clear lead ownership, defined authority, and no coverage gaps across theaters.
Set the team's working agenda: what leads work on, what they own, and how their time splits between reactive escalation support and proactive supportability work.
Turn Technical Lead findings — defect patterns, supportability gaps, documentation failures, recurring friction — into one prioritized, evidence-backed agenda, not a stream of individual product complaints.
Position Technical Leads as credible partners in Product and Engineering forums, with the data, framing, and support they need to influence rather than escalate.
Contribute to the Technical Lead career path with the Education & Enablement Manager, and apply it consistently — progression from Technical Lead through Senior and Principal, and the competencies that separate each grade.
Global Escalations Practice
Own the global escalations practice day to day: process design, entry and exit criteria, severity definitions, roles, communication standards, and adherence.
Drive it to a single global standard. One model, consistently applied and measured across all theaters, with regional variance only where legally or operationally required.
Operate and enforce the working agreement with Product Engineering — SLA adherence for escalated defects, prioritization criteria, update cadence, and follow-through on resolution commitments. Escalate structural breakdowns to the Sr. Director.
Own the quality of post-escalation output. Every RCA and post-incident report produces a tracked action, not a filed document.
Build the prevention agenda: analyze root cause patterns and drive the upstream product, process, tooling, or enablement changes that reduce escalation volume and re-escalation rate.
Act as the Technical Support point of contact for high-severity customer situations — providing assurance and coordination without displacing the assigned Escalations Engineer.
Driving Change Across the Organization
Represent Technical Support in roadmap, release readiness, and quality forums at the Product Management and Engineering Manager level, making the supportability and escalation-risk case with data.
Run the working-level feedback loop into Product and Engineering: defined cadence, shared prioritization, visible tracking from support signal to shipped change.
Assemble the evidence behind supportability investment — ticket volume, escalation cost, re-escalation overhead — and partner with the Sr. Director to convert it into a business case that earns engineering capacity.
Partner with Engineering on release quality gates so Technical Support has meaningful input before GA, not remediation duty after it.
Represent both teams in cross-functional work with Customer Success, Sales Engineering, and Professional Services where escalation or account risk is in scope.
Produce the regular supportability and escalation readout for the Sr. Director: narrative, trend, and recommendation — not raw metrics. Present directly to senior leadership as requested.
Work with the Operations Manager to instrument escalation and Technical Lead activity in TSO reporting, so the teams' signal is visible without manual pulls.
Leadership & People Development
Lead and develop a senior, highly autonomous, globally distributed team, including the Principal Technical Lead as a technical partner and strategic extension of the function.
Operate as a player-coach: hold the operating cadence and coach the team, and step personally into a live critical escalation or a difficult Engineering conversation when it matters.
Build succession depth in both teams and eliminate single-person dependency on strategic products and accounts.
Partner with the Education & Enablement Manager — a peer in the same function — to close skill gaps in both populations and feed field learnings into broader Technical Support enablement and certification.
Set goals, performance expectations, and measurement for both teams in line with global Technical Support objectives.
Drive AI adoption within Technical Lead and Escalations workflows under the Support AI governance framework, acting as the proving ground for capability the wider TSO will inherit.
What You'll Need:
8+ years in Technical Support, Escalation Management, or customer-facing engineering in enterprise software, with recent focus on security or vulnerability management.
3+ years managing technical teams — ideally senior individual contributors, technical leads, or escalation engineers. Experience managing remote and globally distributed teams strongly preferred.
Hands-on experience running an escalation practice or program, including process design and cross-functional coordination.
Demonstrated ability to influence product and engineering priorities using support and escalation data.
Experience operating within Support–Engineering agreements, including SLA adherence for defect resolution.
Comfort with support metrics and the analysis behind them — escalation volume, re-escalation rate, time-to-resolution, ticket volume reduction — and the ability to build the evidence case for investment.
Strong understanding of Tenable's product portfolio and security best practices, or the demonstrated ability to reach it quickly.
Technical foundation across networking, authentication, operating systems, and cloud (AWS/Azure/GCP) sufficient to lead technical discussions credibly.
Excellent written and verbal communication; comfortable with senior stakeholders and with customers at any level.
Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, or equivalent experience.
Able to work in a hybrid/on-site capacity at our office in Columbia MD or Boston MA.
Available to provide leadership coverage for critical escalations outside standard business hours as needed, and to work across AMER, EMEA, and APJ time zones to support globally distributed teams.
Occasional travel as required for team, customer, and cross-functional engagements.
Flexibility to perform other duties as deemed necessary by management.
And Ideally:
Cybersecurity or adjacent enterprise security SaaS experience.
Prior time as a Technical Lead, Principal Engineer, or Escalations Engineer — credibility earned in the seat.
Product Management or program management exposure.
Familiarity with AI-assisted support workflows and their governance.
Experience supporting FedRAMP or other regulated environments.

- Take ownership and ship it—continuously look for the simplest, most effective way to approach challenges; Occam's razor is your friend
- Work where you are (while our Canadian offices are located in Toronto, we are a remote-first workforce and you can join from anywhere in Canada!)
SKILLS WE ARE LOOKING FOR:
- Understanding of digital marketing mechanics including attribution, ad platforms, tracking, and conversion optimization
- Experience working with lifecycle data, understands various of ways of reaching out to new/existing customers and how they fit together holistically
- Strong technical skills in Python and SQL with experience building production-quality code
- Proven track record in algorithm development, optimization problems, or building data-driven decision systems
- Strong foundation in causal inference, A/B testing, and experimental design
- Excellent communication skills and ability to translate complex technical concepts for non-technical stakeholders
- Demonstrated ownership as the data DRI on complex projects end to end, with proactive understanding of business context and how cross-functional teams build systems together
WE ARE LOOKING FOR SOMEONE WHO:
- Can use AI effectively to increase efficiency and depth of the work, while still providing the strategic guidance and critical thinking
- Has full-stack data science experience, comfortable with everything from dashboards and reporting to sophisticated algorithm development

- Technical product judgment: You’re comfortable making tradeoffs across usability, scalability, security, reliability, and implementation complexity.
NICE-TO-HAVES

- Enterprise security experience: You understand secrets management, environment variables, access control, or secure configuration patterns.

- Remote work experience: You’re familiar with remote-first work environments and can collaborate effectively across time zones.
- Entrepreneurial or early-stage experience: You’ve worn many hats and can navigate in many areas at once.
Why join us?
At n8n, your work won’t disappear into a slide deck. You’ll shape how engineering teams build, version, deploy, and operate mission-critical automations at scale — turning n8n into the platform where automation is treated with the same rigor as software.
