ABOUT US:
AI NEEDS A NEW INFRASTRUCTURE LAYER. WE'RE BUILDING IT AT MODAL.
Every era of computing brought new workloads that previous infrastructure couldn't support: mainframes, databases, and the cloud. Each time, the company that rebuilt the layer underneath defined the decade. AI is no different, except it touches everything instead of one slice, and the window to build the layer underneath it is open right now.
Our customers include category-defining companies like Ramp https://modal.com/blog/how-ramp-built-a-full-context-background-coding-agent-on-modal, Cognition, DoorDash, and Suno. They rely on Modal for instant GPU access, sub-second container starts, and native storage, so it's simple to serve low-latency inference, fine-tune models, and access production-ready sandboxes at scale.
We've passed $1B in annualized run rate, up 15x from a year ago. In October 2026 we raised a $750M Series D led by Accel at a $15.75B valuation.
Our team includes creators of popular open-source projects (e.g.,Seaborn https://github.com/mwaskom/seaborn,Luigi https://github.com/spotify/luigi), academic researchers, international olympiad medalists, and experienced engineering and product leaders with decades of experience.
THE ROLE:
Most of the value of owning a model shows up at serving time. We’re building a platform that covers the whole life of an LLM (train it, deploy it, observe it), and inference is where teams feel the difference every day. We already run elastic inference, sandboxes, distributed volumes, and multi-node training, and we control the infrastructure underneath, so the serving stack is ours to shape rather than something we resell.
You will do hands-on inference research at Modal, working with the research lead to pick high-impact bets and owning them end to end. The bets that matter most are the ones that move cost per token and tail latency on the workloads our customers actually run.
WHAT YOU’LL WORK ON:
- Own end-to-end inference research bets: speculative decoding, disaggregated prefill/decode, quantization (FP8, INT4), KV-cache and memory management, autoscaling for spiky serverless traffic, and whatever else the research agenda calls for
- Train custom speculators against real production traffic and feed what you learn back into target models; acceptance length is the metric that decides the win
- Work directly with customers alongside our Forward Deployed Engineers to deploy and tune models, and bring what you learn back into the research
- Carry and expand collaborations with outside research labs, for example:
- our work with ZLab on DFlash https://modal.com/blog/spec-is-all-u-need, a speculator design built on KV injection and blockwise parallel drafting
- our work with SGLang on specdec https://modal.com/blog/host-overhead-inference-efficiency and multimodal inference https://modal.com/blog/boosting-multimodal-inference-performance-by-greater-than-10-with-a-single-python-dictionary performance
- our work on Flash Attention 4 kernels https://modal.com/blog/flash-attention-4-faster
- Work with engineering to turn frontier serving techniques into products: primitives for disaggregation, fast weight refresh for models that keep training after deployment, observability for quality and latency in production, or even a next-generation inference engine
- Help shape the research agenda
None of the above is prescriptive; your work will help guide our future.
YOU MAY BE A FIT IF:
- You have a research-leaning or systems background in LLM inference, with work you can point to
- You’re fluent in the LLM serving stack, from kernels and quantization up to schedulers and autoscaling
- You have a record of shipping research or systems that other people build on, whether in a lab or in industry
- You have the drive to independently take a research bet from idea to result, working in the open with the rest of the team
- You’re able to work in person in our NYC or San Francisco office

Independent contractors are not eligible for health benefits or other benefits provided to employees. Compensation for services is provided to contractors by self-invoicing for services provided pursuant to the terms of our agreement with the contractor.
It is important to understand that, as an independent contractor, continuous work is not guaranteed. The client-contractor relationship is fundamentally project-based, meaning engagements may be temporary, periodic, or intermittent based on our organizational needs and project availability. Staff Backend Engineer - Adaptive Telemetry, Databases
This is a remote position. We are looking for candidates in the Canadian time zones.
What is Grafana Cloud?
Grafana Cloud is our composable observability platform that integrates metrics, logs, traces, and profiles with Grafana. It allows our customers to leverage the best open source observability software – including Prometheus, Mimir, Loki, Tempo, and Pyroscope – without the overhead of installing, maintaining and scaling their own observability stack.

, and
Pyroscope for profiles
. We offer our databases as a Cloud service supporting Grafana Cloud.
Adaptive Telemetry Group
The Adaptive Telemetry group, part of the Databases department, has the mission of ensuring that all telemetry stored in our databases is worthy of attention. Under that mission, the group is responsible for the development of
Adaptive Metrics
,
Adaptive Logs
,
Adaptive Traces
and Adaptive Profiles.
Our Adaptive Telemetry solutions give users the ability to control and optimize their telemetry data. These solutions ensure that data storage is optimized based on individual usage patterns, so only the most valuable data is retained.
As a company we are remote-first and global, we embrace people of different experiences and backgrounds to build diverse teams where every person brings a new perspective to the software.
What will you be doing:
Drive technical strategy and roadmap.
Proactively define the architectural vision, prioritize work that unlocks major product or platform improvements, and influence product and engineering decisions.
Lead end-to-end delivery of large, cross-functional projects.
Own planning, design, execution, rollout and long-term operation of large initiatives.
Own architecture, reliability, performance and cost for critical systems.
Make pragmatic architecture choices that balance scalability, availability, latency and cost while ensuring systems remain maintainable and evolvable.
Define SLOs/SLIs and lead incident response.
Establish measurable reliability targets, run high-severity incident response, lead blameless post-mortems, and drive systemic fixes and automation to prevent recurrence.
Improve observability, automation and operational readiness.
Champion telemetry, alerting, runbooks, capacity planning and automation efforts that reduce toil, speed debugging and lower MTTR.
Align stakeholders and remove blockers.
Coordinate across Product, Design and other teams to align priorities, negotiate tradeoffs, and unblock delivery for large initiatives.
Mentor and grow engineering talent.
Coach senior and mid-level engineers, lead design reviews, raise engineering standards, and help teammates make sound technical tradeoffs.
Represent engineering internally and externally.
Communicate technical strategy clearly to non-engineering stakeholders and represent the team in cross-team planning.
We invest heavily in developer productivity. You can use modern AI coding assistants as part of your daily workflow (your choice of tools, within security guidelines), backed by a company-funded usage budget so you can iterate quickly without unnecessary friction. We encourage pragmatic AI-assisted development: faster prototyping, test generation, refactors, documentation, and incident follow-ups—always with strong code review and quality standards. You'll also have access to the latest frontier models from OpenAI, Anthropic, and Google.
What makes you a great fit:
You are a motivated self starter with a bias towards action. You are customer focused. We build everything with our users in mind. You have a passion for creating intuitive products that fit customers’ needs
Proven delivery of large distributed systems.
Experience shipping and operating complex systems that span multiple teams, with clear evidence of technical leadership and impact.
Strong systems-design instincts.
Deep understanding of tradeoffs around latency, consistency, availability, scaling and cost.
Hands-on cloud and platform experience.
Solid experience with cloud-native architectures (microservices, containers/Kubernetes, IaC) and the operational practices that keep them healthy.
Reliability and performance ownership.
Comfortable defining SLOs/SLIs, doing capacity planning, tuning performance, and driving reliability work end-to-end.
Excellent coding and design skills.
You write clear, maintainable, well-tested code and can lead technical designs — we use Go, but Python/C/C++/Rust or similar translate well.
Comfort with AI-assisted development.
We embrace AI and agentic development so we expect you to be curious and comfortable using AI-powered developer tools and ideally have practical experience folding them into a team’s workflow.
Experience with messaging and telemetry.
Familiarity with streaming/messaging systems (e.g., Kafka) and observability tooling (Prometheus/Grafana or equivalents).
Influence without authority.
Ability to align cross-functional stakeholders, set priorities and drive outcomes in a remote-first environment.
Strong communicator.
Clear written and verbal communication that works across engineers and non-technical stakeholders.

About Anthropic
Anthropic’s mission is to create reliable, interpretable, and steerable AI systems. We want AI to be safe and beneficial for our users and for society as a whole. Our team is a quickly growing group of committed researchers, engineers, policy experts, and business leaders working together to build beneficial AI systems.
About the Role
Anthropic's Infrastructure organization is foundational to our mission of developing AI systems that are reliable, interpretable, and steerable. The systems we build determine how quickly we can train new models, how reliably we can run safety experiments, and how effectively we can scale Claude to millions of users — demonstrating that safe, reliable infrastructure and frontier capabilities can go hand in hand.
Developer Productivity owns the end-to-end experience of how engineers and researchers at Anthropic develop, build, test, and ship code at scale. This role focuses on the configuration and experimentation systems that let teams safely roll out changes, run controlled experiments, and make data-driven decisions across our products and infrastructure — from feature flagging and dynamic configuration to A/B testing platforms that support both research and production workloads.
Responsibilities
Own the technical strategy and roadmap for config and experimentation infrastructure, translating team-level goals into concrete execution plans and partnering with teams focused on deployment, testing, and more
Maintain and enhance the architecture for feature flagging, dynamic configuration, and experimentation systems, ensuring the hardest problems get solved — whether by you directly or by working through others
Design and build scalable, reliable distributed infrastructure and shared libraries that support high-volume experimentation and config workloads across all engineering teams
Own and evolve the platforms and tooling that let engineers and researchers safely ship config changes, run experiments, and measure impact
Define standards, tooling, and frameworks for experimentation and configuration management that drive developer productivity across research and production workloads
You may be a good fit if you:
Have deep experience with configuration management, feature flagging, and/or experimentation platforms in a large-scale environment
Have strong proficiency in Python, Rust and/or Go
Are obsessed with developer productivity and reducing friction in how teams configure, test, and ship changes
Have experience with container orchestration and infrastructure at scale
Have excellent communication skills and enjoy supporting internal partners to improve their development experience
Are excited about designing foundational systems and are comfortable working independently on ambiguous, high-impact technical challenges
Strong candidates may have:
Have 15+ years (not including internships or co-ops) of experience in a Software Engineer role, building and operating large-scale developer infrastructure
Have 3+ years (not including internships or co-ops) of experience leading large scale, complex projects or teams as an engineer or tech lead
Experience with config or experimentation platforms such as Statsig, GrowthBook, LaunchDarkly, Optimizely, Unleash, or similar (including building such systems in-house)
Experience designing experimentation frameworks — randomization, assignment, metrics pipelines, and statistical analysis for A/B testing at scale
Experience with dynamic configuration systems and safe rollout mechanisms (gradual rollouts, kill switches, targeting rules)
Experience building CLI tools, developer-facing services, and APIs/automation workflows that integrate config and experimentation into existing CI/CD pipelines
Deadline to apply: None. Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis.
The annual compensation range for this role is listed below.
For sales roles, the range provided is the role’s On Target Earnings ("OTE") range, meaning that the range includes both the sales commissions/sales bonuses target and annual base salary for the role.

Minimum education:
Bachelor’s degree or an equivalent combination of education, training, and/or experience
Required field of study:

Research shows that people who identify as being from underrepresented groups are more prone to experiencing imposter syndrome and doubting the strength of their candidacy, so we urge you not to exclude yourself prematurely and to submit an application if you're interested in this work. We think AI systems like the ones we're building have enormous social and ethical implications. We think this makes representation even more important, and we strive to include a range of diverse perspectives on our team.
Your safety matters to us.

How we're different
We believe that the highest-impact AI research will be big science. At Anthropic we work as a single cohesive team on just a few large-scale research efforts. And we value impact — advancing our long-term goals of steerable, trustworthy AI — rather than work on smaller and more specific puzzles. We view AI research as an empirical science, which has as much in common with physics and biology as with traditional efforts in computer science. We're an extremely collaborative group, and we host frequent research discussions to ensure that we are pursuing the highest-impact work at any given time. As such, we greatly value communication skills.
The easiest way to understand our research directions is to read our recent research. This research continues many of the directions our team worked on prior to Anthropic, including: GPT-3, Circuit-Based Interpretability, Multimodal Neurons, Scaling Laws, AI & Compute, Concrete Problems in AI Safety, and Learning from Human Preferences.
Come work with us!
Anthropic is a public benefit corporation headquartered in San Francisco. We offer competitive compensation and benefits, optional equity donation matching, generous vacation and parental leave, flexible working hours, and a lovely office space in which to collaborate with colleagues.

GRC Manager
to own and modernize our governance, risk, and compliance program across both federal and commercial markets.
This is a program-ownership role for someone who brings a modern, engineering-led approach to compliance — harnessing GRC engineering and AI to reduce manual effort and scale our programs. You will own Mattermost's compliance posture end to end, accountable for our federal readiness and commercial certifications, and you will modernize how we run them: automated, continuously monitored, and AI-native.
You will do the hands-on compliance work while coordinating across internal stakeholders in engineering, infrastructure, and IT who implement controls, the external auditors who assess them, and the customers whose trust rests on the outcome. As the program scales, you will grow and lead the team behind it.
What You'll Do
Own and modernize Mattermost's compliance programs across federal and commercial markets
Lead readiness, certification, and surveillance cycles across both programs
Operate the risk management program end to end — from identification and assessment through treatment and acceptance
Own the third-party and vendor risk management program, including security assessments and supply chain risk
Apply GRC engineering and automation to replace manual evidence collection with continuous controls monitoring
Build AI-native workflows to accelerate and improve the quality of recurring compliance work
Maintain the control library, system security plans, POA&Ms, and policies
Coordinate external audits from scoping through remediation
Accelerate deal cycles by owning customer security questionnaires, trust center content, and reusable compliance artifacts
Grow and lead the GRC team as the program scales
What We're Looking For
Bachelor's degree in computer science, information security, or related field — or significant professional GRC and compliance experience
Proven senior-level experience in governance, risk, and compliance, security compliance, or IT audit, including direct ownership of a certification or authorization program
Experience with U.S. Federal standards including CMMC and NIST series (800-171 / 800-53)
Experience with ISO 27001 and SOC 2 Type II
Experience operating a formal risk management program
Experience running a third-party and vendor risk management program
Experience owning customer-facing security assurance, including security questionnaires and trust center content
Working knowledge of security controls for cloud environments (AWS, GCP, and/or Azure)
Excellent written and verbal communication skills
Nice to Have
Professional GRC certifications such as CISA, CRISC, CISM, CISSP, or CIPP
Experience working with AI platforms such as Claude, OpenAI, or Gemini
Experience with compliance automation tooling such as Vanta or Drata, and continuous controls monitoring
Direct experience applying AI or LLM-based workflows to GRC tasks
Proficiency in no-code automation or scripting languages
Past success in critical infrastructure industries including defense, cybersecurity, communications, or manufacturing
How Success Is Measured
CMMC Level 2 gap assessment and readiness roadmap delivered within first 90 days
SOC 2 Type II and ISO 27001 audit cycles completed on time without slippage
Manual evidence collection replaced with automated, continuously monitored controls
Customer security questionnaires and trust center content maintained to unblock deal cycles
GRC team grown and operating as a scalable, program-driven function

At JetBrains, code is our passion. Ever since we started, back in 2000, we have been striving to make the strongest, most effective developer tools on earth. By automating routine checks and corrections, our tools speed up production, freeing developers and businesses to grow, discover, and create.
IntelliJ IDEA revolutionized the Java development tool market back in 2001, becoming the first IDE to offer automated code refactoring. It continues to drive innovation in software development, making thousands of programmers more productive every day. In addition to Java, IntelliJ IDEA includes various development tools for other prominent languages such as Ruby, Groovy, Scala, Python, JavaScript, Objective-C, PHP, and Kotlin.
We're now looking for a QA Automation Engineer to join the IntelliJ IDEA Java Build Tools QA team and help ensure the quality of a product that our customers and software engineers around the world rely on daily. Since most Java projects in IntelliJ IDEA are built with Maven or Gradle, Java Build Tools is a critical part of the IDE experience, and your work will affect how smoothly our users can open, sync, build, and run their projects. You'll work alongside QA engineers to design and set up our automation process for Gradle and Maven end-to-end tests, as well as implement and automate test scenarios that catch issues before they reach our users.
What you'll do
Core responsibilities:
Design, develop, and maintain multi-platform and environmental (Linux, Windows, MacOS, Docker, WSL) automated test scenarios.
Expand test coverage for new and existing functionality.
Debug and troubleshoot test failures.
Improve existing automation based on team feedback and reduce test flakiness.
Track quality metrics, including testing coverage, failure rate, and flakiness.
Contribute to frameworks and tools with product-specific extensions as needed.
Help the team monitor test execution results and investigate failures.
Participate in release quality assessments.
Collaborate with QA and developers to define test strategies.
Do manual QA activities when needed.
Participate in the test documentation creation.
Improve domain-specific test infrastructure and CI/CD pipelines within your team's scope.
Share automation best practices with the team.
Work with the tooling team to adopt new frameworks and practices.
What we're looking for
Required skills:
Proven experience in test automation.
Solid programming skills in Kotlin/Java.
Experience with test frameworks like JUnit or TestNG.
Familiarity with build tools, like Maven and Gradle.
An understanding of software testing principles and methodologies.
Familiarity with CI/CD tools (TeamCity or similar).
Experience with reporting tools (Allure or others).
Version control experience (Git).
Proficiency in spoken and written English.
Responsibility, self-discipline, and self-learning skills.
Strong teamwork skills.
The ability to work independently, creatively, and on your own initiative.
Nice to have:
Experience testing developer tools, IDEs, and desktop applications.
Familiarity with JVM Frameworks (Spring or Jakarta) and databases.
Why join JetBrains?
Strong base salary. We offer competitive pay that reflects your skills and experience.

Learning and development opportunities. Access to conferences, courses, and language classes.
Relocation support. We help make your move as smooth and stress-free as possible.
Language classes. Pick up the local language or sharpen your English skills.
Fuel your day. Enjoy a hot meal or receive a lunch allowance on workdays.
Mental health support. To help you feel your best, we provide easy access to professional mental health services.
