About Vercel:
Vercel is the agentic infrastructure company, freeing people and agents to ship what's next. For more than a decade we've helped builders move from idea to production with speed, security, and exceptional developer experience.
Now we're scaling our products for both agents and people to ship and run software, built in the open and trusted by OpenAI, PayPal, Ramp, Supreme, and millions of developers worldwide.
About the role
We are looking for a
Senior Forward-Deployed Engineer
to join our Professional Services team. This role is focused on working directly alongside developer teams in our most strategic enterprise customers to drive transformational outcomes across frontend modernization, platform migrations, and AI adoption.
In this role, you will lead complex Next.js migrations, architect high-performance applications, and build production AI solutions - all within customer environments. You'll work hands-on-keyboard alongside customer teams, whether you're migrating a legacy React application to App Router, conducting a deep-dive code audit, or deploying production agents using Vercel's eve framework and AI SDK.
Our Forward-Deployed Engineers operate with high agency and autonomy. You'll navigate ambiguous enterprise environments, assess technical debt, design migration strategies, and deliver measurable business value - all while building long-term relationships that expand our partnership with each customer.
There are two main profiles for this role: Next.js experts, and AI builders. Next.js experts work on deep customer code optimization, performance audits, AEO and SEO, and teaching customers how to build Next.js apps with AI instrumentation - such as Claude Code, Codex, Cursor, etc with Next.js and Vercel agent skills. The AI builder profile is less focused on deep Next.js experience, and more on identifying, evangelizing, and building AI applications and agentic workflows. Your job in this role will be to understand customers’ businesses, scope, design, and build AI agents, and prove their value. The two profiles are not mutually exclusive and we appreciate expertise in both.
You will report to the Global Manager of Forward Deployed Engineering. This role is remote-first with travel to customer sites expected occasionally. Travel requirements vary, but most of our engineers travel no more than 3-4 days every other month.
What you'll do
Build production AI solutions
using Vercel's
eve
framework, AI SDK, and AI Cloud infrastructure, including conversational interfaces, production agents, MCP servers, and agentic workflows that transform customer operations.
Lead complex frontend migrations -
modernizing legacy React, Vue, or other frameworks to Next.js, including Pages to App Router transitions, incremental adoption strategies, and large-scale codebase transformations. Automation of migrations is key to engineering efficiency.
Conduct code audits and help analyze and improve website performance
, analyzing customer codebases for performance bottlenecks, architectural anti-patterns, and optimization opportunities - delivering actionable roadmaps that drive measurable improvements.
Architect and implement high-performance Next.js applications
, leveraging App Router, Server Components, streaming, ISR, and advanced rendering strategies to meet enterprise scale and performance requirements.
Embed with strategic customers
to build production applications - working within their systems, understanding their constraints, and shipping TypeScript code that goes live.
Drive enablement and knowledge transfer
through workshops, pair programming, and documentation - ensuring customer teams can extend and maintain solutions independently.
Navigate complex enterprise environments
by building relationships with stakeholders across engineering, product, and executive teams - translating technical capabilities into business outcomes.
Contribute to our service evolution
by identifying repeatable patterns, building reusable components, and sharing implementation insights back to Product and Engineering teams.
What you need
6+ years of experience
in software engineering with at least 2 years in a customer-facing technical role (consulting, solutions architecture, forward deployed engineering, or technical founder experience).
Experience using AI instrumentation
such as harnesses, skills, and MCPs to build and deploy web applications, backend systems, and/or agentic workflows.
High agency with comfort in ambiguity -
you thrive when given a problem to solve rather than a task to complete, and you can navigate complex organizations to create a plan and drive a project.
Exceptional communication skills
with the ability to conduct technical discovery, present to executives, mentor engineers, and build lasting customer relationships - all with a low-ego, collaborative approach.
Business acumen
to understand customer objectives, translate technical capabilities into ROI, and identify expansion opportunities throughout engagement lifecycles.
Willingness to travel
occasionally to customer sites for embedded work and relationship building.
Next.js-focused Candidates:
Expert-level TypeScript skills -
You are fluent in TypeScript and have strong opinions on type safety, patterns, and tooling.
Deep expertise in Next.js
, with a proven track record of architecting and delivering complex applications using App Router, Server Components, server-side rendering (SSR), static generation (SSG), and incremental static regeneration (ISR), and personalization.
Demonstrated experience leading frontend migrations -
you've converted legacy applications to Next.js, navigated incremental adoption strategies, and understand the challenges of migrating large codebases in production environments.
Mastery of React
and its ecosystem, including advanced state management, performance optimization, and modern patterns like streaming, suspense, and concurrent features.
AI-focused Candidates:
Production experience with LLMs and AI applications
, including agent development, cloud sandbox & filesystem agent patterns, human-in-the-loop patterns, and value optimization. Familiarity with Vercel's eve framework and AI SDK is strongly preferred.
Ability to identify business cases for AI agents
- many customers need guidance not only on how to build AI agents, but where and why to use AI. You’ll need to listen and understand a day-in-the-life of customers’ teams to build proposals.
Bonus if you
Have led enterprise AI transformation initiatives, including building production agents that automated manual processes or replaced legacy systems.
Have taught others how to develop software using AI, best practices for building agents, harnesses, skills, and MCPs.
Have led large-scale migrations from legacy frameworks (Create React App, Gatsby, custom webpack setups) to Next.js in enterprise environments.
Have expertise in performance optimization and Core Web Vitals, with experience diagnosing and fixing LCP, CLS, and INP issues at scale.
Have contributed to the Next.js, React, or AI SDK open-source projects, or maintain popular related libraries.
Have experience with enterprise deployment patterns including security reviews, compliance requirements, and multi-region architectures.
Have a background in financial services, healthcare, retail/e-commerce, or media - industries with complex frontend ecosystems and growing AI adoption.
Have spoken at conferences or published thought leadership on frontend architecture, migrations, or AI applications.
Benefits:
Great compensation package and stock options.
Inclusive Healthcare Package.
Learn and Grow - we provide mentorship and send you to events that help you build your network and skills.
Flexible Time Off - Flexible vacation policy with a recommended 4-weeks per year, and paid holidays.
Remote Friendly - Work with teammates from different time zones across the globe.
We will provide you the gear you need to do your role, and a WFH budget for you to outfit your space as needed.

- Enviroment experience: Early-stage or high-growth companies, developer tools, infrastructure, or product-led growth motions.
- Track record: Demonstrated success against sales targets and ownership of opportunities through close. More experienced candidates should bring experience navigating complex, multi-stakeholder sales cycles.
- Technical aptitude: Curiosity about how software is built and the ability to learn technical products, ask thoughtful questions, and earn credibility with engineering leaders.
- Communication: Strong discovery, listening, and written communication skills, with the ability to explain complex concepts clearly.
- Ownership: Comfort working on a lean team with evolving priorities, fluid customer coverage, and processes that are still being built.
- Collaboration: A resourceful, team-oriented approach to solving problems and moving opportunities forward.
- Organization: Strong pipeline discipline and proficiency with CRM tools.

ABOUT US
Sierra is the leading platform for customer-facing AI agents, working with many of the world's biggest brands — including The GAP, Rocket Mortgage, SoFi, Sutter Health, and SoftBank — to transform how they serve customers and grow their businesses. We are primarily an in-person company based in San Francisco, with growing offices across North America, Europe, and Asia.
We are guided by a set of values that are at the core of our actions and define our culture: Trust, Customer Obsession, Craftsmanship, Intensity, and a commitment to balancing Family along the way. These values are the foundation of our work, and we are committed to upholding them in everything we do.
Our co-founders are Bret Taylor https://www.linkedin.com/in/brettaylor/ and Clay Bavor https://www.linkedin.com/in/claybavor/. Bret currently serves as Board Chair of OpenAI. Previously, he was co-CEO of Salesforce (which had acquired the company he founded, Quip) and CTO of Facebook. Bret was also one of Google's earliest product managers and co-creator of Google Maps. Before founding Sierra, Clay spent 18 years at Google, where he most recently led Google Labs. Earlier, he started and led Google’s AR/VR effort, Project Starline, and Google Lens. Before that, Clay led the product and design teams for Google Workspace.
SOFTWARE ENGINEER, SECURITY
Security Engineering builds the foundations that let Sierra deliver powerful AI agents while protecting customer data and trust. We partner across product and platform to make security, privacy, and safety core product capabilities and secure defaults.
WHAT YOU’LL DO
Our work spans several security domains. You’ll go deep where your strengths and interests are strongest, with opportunities to explore new areas alongside the team.
Build the Foundations of Trust.
Design and ship systems that make Sierra’s platform secure by default — spanning agent safety/security, privacy, identity, authentication, authorization, and data security. You’ll work across all layers of production (agents, infrastructure, backend, frontend) to embed security-conscious design into the core of our product.
Own Cross-Cutting Systems.
Partner with product and platform teams to implement and evolve Sierra’s trust primitives: identity management, access control, auditability, and data lifecycle management. You’ll make pragmatic design trade-offs between usability, performance, and security.
Secure Agentic AI Systems.
Build controls that ensure AI agents can't leak customer data, execute unauthorized actions, or be manipulated into unintended behavior. Design runtime policy enforcement for tool use, implement safe agent sandboxing, and create boundaries that protect data while keeping agents powerful and useful.
Automate and Scale Security-Adjacent Workflows.
Create developer-friendly tooling to reduce risk and friction — whether through automating security checks in CI/CD, enforcing privacy boundaries through schema validation, or instrumenting runtime monitoring for sensitive events.
WHAT YOU’LL BRING
Strong Software Engineering Skills.
Experience building and maintaining production systems. You’re comfortable designing APIs, integrating with authentication or identity frameworks, and thoughtfully using AI-assisted development tools to build, test, and ship high-quality code faster without lowering the quality bar.
Security Mindset.
You think like a security engineer — considering how data flows, where it’s stored, who can access it, and how to design for least privilege and transparency.
Product and Platform Mindset.
You care about building secure scalable systems that enable, not block, innovation. You work closely with product teams to make trade-offs clear and help them move quickly without sacrificing trust.
Curiosity and Ownership.
You take ambiguous, cross-cutting problems from first principles to production and go deep when needed: tracing an authorization decision from agent intent through policy enforcement and downstream effects, or following sensitive data across model context, logs, storage, and tenant boundaries. You define the problem, align partners, ship the solution, and own it in production.
EVEN BETTER IF…
- You’ve worked on privacy, identity, trust & safety, authN/authz, or data protection systems.
- You’ve built security frameworks, libraries, or tooling that developers actually use or integrated security automation into CI/CD pipelines.
- You have exposure to AI systems or care about designing secure-by-default LLM applications.
- You think like an attacker — you naturally ask "what could go wrong?" when reviewing designs or while building systems. You've found or fixed real security issues in production systems.
- You thrive in 0→1 environments, where foundational systems have to balance speed, reliability, and trust.
OUR VALUES
- Trust: We build trust with our customers with our accountability, empathy, quality, and responsiveness. We build trust in AI by making it more accessible, safe, and useful.
As a Senior Forward-Deployed Engineer on the Professional Services team, you will embed with developer teams at strategic enterprise customers to lead frontend migrations, performance work, and production AI builds. Success looks like production code live in customer environments, customer teams able to extend it on their own, and a wider partnership with each account. This is a remote role open to candidates in the US, with occasional travel to customer sites.
What you'll do
Build production AI agents, Model Context Protocol (MCP) servers, and agentic workflows with the AI SDK and the eve framework inside customer environments
Lead migrations of legacy React, Vue, and other frontends to Next.js, including Pages Router to App Router, and automate the repeatable steps
Audit customer codebases for performance bottlenecks and architectural anti-patterns, then deliver roadmaps with measurable improvements, including answer engine optimization (AEO) and search engine optimization (SEO)
Architect and ship high-performance Next.js applications with App Router, Server Components, streaming, and incremental static regeneration (ISR)
Run workshops and pair programming sessions so customer teams can maintain what you ship, and share repeatable patterns with Product and Engineering
What you need
6+ years of software engineering experience, including 2+ years in a customer-facing technical role (consulting, solutions architecture, forward-deployed engineering, or technical founder)
Shipped production TypeScript applications on Next.js and React, including a legacy-to-Next.js migration, or built and deployed production LLM agents with human-in-the-loop patterns and sandboxed execution
Built and deployed web applications, backend systems, or agentic workflows using AI coding tools such as harnesses, skills, and MCP servers
Presented technical discovery findings and proposals to executives at enterprise customers, and mentored other engineers
Bonus if you
Led an enterprise AI initiative that replaced a manual process or legacy system with a production agent
Diagnosed and fixed Core Web Vitals issues (Largest Contentful Paint, Cumulative Layout Shift, Interaction to Next Paint) at scale
Contributed to Next.js, React, or the AI SDK, or maintain a popular related library
