Here at Humanoid, we believe in a future where robots amplify human potential. That’s why we’ve set out on a mission to build the world’s most capable, commercially-scalable, and safe humanoid robots. We’re bringing that mission to life with HMND‑01 - our rapidly developed humanoid platform being deployed in real industrial environments - and we’re growing the team to take it even further.
ABOUT THE ROLE:
We are looking for a Software Engineer to own the device software and data pipeline for our UMI data collection devices - handheld gripper systems used by human operators to demonstrate manipulation tasks. The data they produce is used to train our robots, so the quality of what you ship determines the quality of robots we deploy.
This is a deeply technical, hands-on role. You will write production-grade device software, build reliable sensor fusion and recording pipelines, and own the validation tooling that keeps our training datasets clean. You will work closely with hardware, AI, and data collection teams.
WHAT YOU’LL DO:
- Develop and maintain device software across the full episode lifecycle: session initialisation, per-sensor stream management, episode recording, and graceful shutdown
- Integrate and synchronise sensor streams - wrist and head cameras, 6-DOF pose trackers, gripper aperture encoders, and optionally force/torque sensors - into temporally-aligned, policy-consumable trajectories
- Define and maintain the data contract between UMI devices and the AI team: stream formats, episode packaging, metadata schemas, and the interface between raw recordings and training pipelines
- Build and maintain data validation tooling that detects dropped frames, timing jitter, pose tracking loss, image quality degradation, and sensor faults before corrupt episodes enter the training dataset
- Own operator-facing device software: status indication, start/stop/cancel episode controls, and clear feedback when a session needs to be retried
- Support field data collection sessions - deploying devices to operators, validating data quality in situ, and iterating quickly when issues surface during collection
- Debug integration failures on device hardware: camera driver issues, bus bandwidth saturation, tracker calibration drift, compute thermal throttling, and storage write failures mid-episode
WE’RE LOOKING FOR:
- Experience in embedded or device-level software in a robotics or sensing context - writing code that runs on the device, not just talking to it
- Proficiency in C++ and/or Python for real-time sensor drivers, inter-process communication, and data recording pipelines
- Solid understanding of multi-modal sensor synchronisation - timestamps, hardware triggers, clock drift - and the practical consequences of getting it wrong for downstream ML
- Familiarity with camera pipelines and the difference between what a sensor reports and what actually lands on disk with correct timing
- Strong instincts around data quality and dataset hygiene - you are uncomfortable shipping episodes with frame drops, tracking loss, or misaligned streams
- Proven ability to debug on real hardware: you read logs, attach profilers, and can diagnose whether a problem is a driver, a bus, or a timing issue
NICE TO HAVE:
- Experience with 6-DOF pose tracking systems (VIO, optical trackers, or similar) and their common failure modes
- Familiarity with ML training data formats and what an AI team actually needs from a recorded episode - understanding the consumer of the data you produce
- Exposure to operator-facing tooling for data collection: session management, per-episode quality summaries, rejection and retry workflows
- Experience scaling device software from a small number of prototype units to many devices operated by non-engineers in the field
WHAT WE OFFER
- Competitive equity: stock options with meaningful upside as we scale.
- 30+ paid days off, including 23 days of annual leave, all UK bank holidays, and additional company closure days (including Christmas–New Year shutdown).
- Private healthcare, including virtual and in-person care.
- Pension scheme with 8% total contribution (5% employee, 3% employer) on full earnings.
- Free daily breakfast, catered lunch, and snacks in-office.
- Work at the frontier - collaborate daily with world-class engineers, researchers, and product experts building the next generation of AI and humanoid robotics.
- Real ownership - direct access to founding leadership, meaningful input on product direction, and the ability to drive key initiatives from day one.

Autonomous vehicles are coming to the markets in which inDrive serves, but the AV industry has a blind spot: it has almost no data from the cities where we operate. inDrive runs one of the world's largest ride-hailing fleets, concentrated in exactly the emerging markets global AV players have yet to reach. We are building the team that turns that fleet into an AV grade data platform: large scale multi sensor collection from real vehicles on real trips, evaluation of driving models against human drivers, automated and human in the loop causal annotation, and camera first 3D scene reconstruction for simulation.
We are hiring the founding leader of this workstream. This is a rare true zero to one: you will hire the team, stand up the vehicles and the data platform, set the technical bar, and own delivery end to end.
Key Responsibilities
Own the AV data workstream end to end.
Roadmap, execution, quality, and outcomes, from vehicle data capture through processing, annotation, and delivery of AV-grade datasets
Build the team from zero.
Hire and lead a multi disciplinary team covering large scale data engineering, search and serving, ML engineering across divergence detection, edge inference, and VLM based auto labeling, 3D reconstruction research, and data annotation operations. Own the hiring bar and the team's growth
Management
: Manage ML engineers' charter across the cluster
Set technical direction across disciplines.
Provide design authority for the full pipeline, including onboard capture, cloud ingestion and processing at fleet scale, semantic and causal labeling, and neural scene reconstruction, and make the key technical decisions on evidence
Partner with leaders across the organization.
Work closely with the leaders of data platform, ML ops, geo and mapping, and inDrive's wider autonomous vehicle initiatives to align roadmaps, share infrastructure, and unblock delivery
Own external partnerships.
Drive the technical relationships this work depends on, including the NVIDIA AV ecosystem and prospective AV partners consuming our data
Balance research and delivery.
Several of the core questions here are open research. You frame milestones as decision gates, redirect work based on evidence, and keep the team shipping measurable results on a schedule
Skills, Knowledge and Expertise
10+ years of engineering experience in applied ML, autonomous systems, or large-scale data and ML platforms, including 3+ years in the autonomous vehicle industry or closely adjacent autonomy domains (AV data, simulation, or evaluation platforms, ADAS, robotics perception, HD mapping), and 4+ years managing engineering teams, with a track record of building teams from scratch and delivering from zero to one
Strong command of the modern AV and foundation model landscape: vision-language models, multi-modal perception, 3D reconstruction and neural rendering, and the NVIDIA AV ecosystem. Deep enough to set direction, review designs, and make evidence-based technical calls
Genuine engineering leadership range: you have successfully led data engineering, platform, or infrastructure delivery, not only ML research, and can evaluate and unblock work across those disciplines
Proven ability to take large-scale ML systems from conception to production: data pipelines, training and evaluation infrastructure, and models running under real-world constraints
Strong external presence: experience owning technical partnerships, vendor and licensing relationships, or customer-facing technical engagements at a senior level
Deep fluency in the modern ML stack (PyTorch or equivalent, large-scale training and inference, Python and Linux) and in cloud data platforms at multi-terabyte scale
Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field
Nice to have:
AV industry experience specifically in offline evaluation, data mining, annotation platforms, or simulation, as distinct from on-vehicle stack development
Advanced degree (MS or PhD) in ML, robotics, or computer vision
Experience operating in emerging markets, and comfort building where the playbook does not exist yet

ABOUT NIANTIC SPATIAL
AI has learned from almost everything online, but it still struggles with the physical world, where 99.5% of economic activity happens. It doesn’t know where things are, how spaces fit together, or what changes over time.
That’s one of the biggest unsolved problems in AI, and it’s the one we’re solving at Niantic Spatial. We build spatial AI models and services so people and machines can reason, learn and act safely in the physical world. We turn camera imagery, video, sensor data and archives into accurate, AI-readable representations of real places that robots can train in and machines can use to know exactly where they are.
In physical AI, mistakes have real consequences. That’s why we build AI grounded in measured reality, not guesswork, so the people and machines relying on it can trust it to get things right.
Our team built some of the world’s most widely used maps. Now we’re building something bigger: a living, measured record of the real world that machines can query, learn from and use to understand how places change over time. If you want to help AI understand the world we actually live in, come build with us.
THE OPPORTUNITY
As a staff member of the Map Team, you’ll own and drive significant parts of our Reconstruction and/or Localization technologies. You will be responsible for building the Map representing a living geospatial world model that can be simultaneously used to generate a high-fidelity 3D representations via Gaussian Splatting and Meshing, as well as the centimeter-level accuracy Visual Positioning System (VPS) that allows people and robots to explore the real world.

- Experience leading external developers or contractors, including scoping work, reviewing implementation and holding delivery to clear quality standards.
- Clear written and verbal communication, with the ability to turn incomplete requirements into actionable technical work.
- Sound judgment about what to build directly, what to delegate and when to involve internal engineering specialists.
Experience with robotics, machine learning infrastructure, sensor data or internal data platforms would be valuable. We welcome engineers with particular depth in infrastructure or platform engineering who can demonstrate effective delivery across the wider software stack.
WHAT SUCCESS LOOKS LIKE?
The data platform is deployed reliably within Humanoid and develops in line with internal engineering needs. Contractor work arrives tested, documented and ready to integrate. Internal teams have clear visibility into progress and decisions, while you own the technical context, coordination and follow-through needed to deliver.
