As an Intermediate Backend Engineer on the GitLab Orbit team, you'll help build and operate a graph data service that supports GitLab Duo agents, analytics, and architecture-level features across GitLab.com, Dedicated, and Self-Managed deployments. You'll join a Rust-first team that values clear ownership, thoughtful system design, and rigorous thinking about data and reliability. The Knowledge Graph service is a Rust backend that builds a property graph from GitLab’s software development lifecycle (SDLC) and code data. It uses ClickHouse, NATS JetStream, and the Data Insights Platform. It exposes secure graph queries and MCP tools used by AI agents and product features. In this role, you’ll deliver features and improvements in well-scoped areas, learn the broader architecture, and contribute to reliability, observability, and operational readiness. In your first year, you’ll take clear ownership of specific components or features (for example, parts of the SDLC indexing pipeline or query paths). You’ll help reduce single points of failure with better tests and runbooks, and you’ll help the team ship analytical services that are easier to maintain and evolve over time. What you’ll do Implement and iterate on backend features in the Rust-based Knowledge Graph service, including changes to the query engine, SDLC and code indexing flows, and API endpoints (including MCP endpoints) under guidance from senior and staff engineers. Maintain integrations between Knowledge Graph and the rest of the GitLab platform, working in areas that touch GitLab Rails, the Data Insights Platform (Siphon, NATS, ClickHouse), and GitLab Duo Agent Platform. Contribute to system design discussions by proposing options, raising questions, and documenting decisions, with a focus on reliability, scalability, and maintainability for analytical graph workloads. Improve the operational maturity of the service by adding or enhancing metrics, logging, runbooks, alerts, and small readiness tasks, and by participating in on-call rotation as appropriate for your level and experience. Collaborate asynchronously with product, data, infrastructure, security, and AI counterparts to clarify requirements, align on scope, and ship features safely for customers and sustainably for the team. Use AI-assisted development workflows responsibly (for example, using Knowledge Graph-backed agents and internal Duo tooling), and share what works with the team while keeping a strong focus on code quality and correctness. Participate in code reviews, knowledge-sharing sessions, and pairing to both learn from others and help maintain consistent standards across the codebase. Contribute across the stack when needed, including occasional Ruby work for Rails integration and authorization paths, or small frontend changes related to Knowledge Graph features (for example, Software Architecture Map UI plumbing). What you’ll bring Professional experience building and maintaining backend systems in production, with an understanding of reliability, maintainability, and how to support services over time (for example, incident response and follow-ups). Proficiency in at least one modern backend language and strong interest in Rust, with either prior Rust experience or clear evidence you can ramp quickly and deliver in a Rust-first, performance-sensitive codebase. Some exposure to distributed data or analytics systems (for example, OLAP databases, Kafka- or NATS-style messaging, or change data capture (CDC) pipelines), or strong motivation to develop those skills in this role. Interest in graph data modeling and query patterns (property graphs, multi-step (n-hop) traversals, aggregations), and willingness to learn the tools and concepts used in Knowledge Graph over time. Practical experience (or strong interest) using AI tools in day-to-day development, along with a thoughtful approach to validating outputs and integrating AI into your workflow. A language-agnostic mindset and evidence that you can pick up new languages and frameworks as needed (for example, Ruby, Go, or TypeScript/Vue where the work touches adjacent systems). Solid fundamentals in system design for your level, including the ability to reason about trade-offs, ask good questions, and align your implementation work with documented architectural decisions. Comfort working in a low-process, high-ownership environment where you take responsibility for your work, refine problem statements with teammates, and communicate progress clearly in writing across time zones in an all-remote team. About the team GitLab Orbit sits within the Data Engineering organization. We work closely with partners across AI (Duo Agent Platform), analytics, infrastructure and delivery, and security because our work spans many parts of the platform. Location: Seattle; New York City; San Francisco Workplace: Hybrid ABOUT MOTHERDUCK Don’t let the quirky name fool you: At MotherDuck, we’re on a mission to make data warehousing fun, frictionless, and ducking awesome for developers and data practitioners building blazing fast internal and customer-facing analytics experiences. We're building a cloud-hosted version of DuckDB, working hand-in-hand with the creators of the fastest-growing and fastest-improving query engine on the planet. Unlike other databases, MotherDuck was architected to unify local development with cloud operations to bridge the gap between software and data engineering workflows. Our team is a mix of thoughtful, passionate, and empathetic data industry veterans. WHAT YOU WILL DO We’re looking for a Product Marketer who lives at the intersection of words, product, and customers. You’ll take what our engineers build and turn it into stories that make developers and data teams lean in. You’ll own positioning and messaging, write the pages people actually read, and make sure our sales team walks into every conversation ready. This role can be based in our Seattle, San Francisco or New York City office. Key responsibilities - Write. A lot. Website copy, landing pages, launch posts, product one-pagers, emails. You care about every word and you know when to cut. - Help shape how we tell our story. Work alongside product, sales, and leadership on who we’re for, why we’re different, and how to say it in a way a data engineer won’t roll their eyes at... then keep it fresh as the product and market evolve. - Build the web and the artifacts. Ship landing pages, comparison pages, demos and interactive assets... ideally hands-on with AI tools rather than waiting in a queue for design and eng. - Arm the sales team. Create battlecards, pitch decks, objection handling, and competitive takes that AEs and Customer Engineers actually use in deals. Sit in on calls and bring what you hear back into the messaging. - Run launches. Plan and ship product launches end to end with product, engineering, DevRel and growth. - Stay close to customers and the market. Talk to users, track competitors (Snowflake, Databricks, BigQuery and friends), and turn what you learn into sharper stories. - Work AI-first. Use Claude and other tools to research, draft, prototype and ship. Help set the bar for how marketing at MotherDuck uses AI. WHAT YOU BRING - 3 to 10 years in product marketing, ideally at a B2B software or developer-focused company - Excellent writing. Clear, punchy, and specific... you can make a technical idea land in one sentence - A real knack for positioning: you've taken a product to market and can show the before and after - Experience building web pages and landing pages, and comfort shipping them yourself with modern tools - A track record of sales enablement that sales teams actually used - Genuine curiosity about technical products. You don't need to write SQL for a living, but you want to understand how the thing works - AI fluency. You already use AI daily to do better work, and you're excited to push that further - A bias for action. You'd rather ship a good version this week than a perfect one next quarter WHAT PEOPLE SHOULD BE SAYING IF YOU’RE DOING DUCKING AWESOME - “I sent the new landing page to a prospect and they replied ‘this is exactly our problem.’ Didn’t have to explain a thing.” - “Honestly, I understand our own feature better after reading the launch post.” - “The battlecard came up in the call and I had the answer before they finished the question.” - “They showed me a workflow they built with AI last week and now half of marketing uses it.” WHAT WE PROVIDE - Feather-ruffling compensation – competitive salary and stock options so you have a stake in our flock’s success. - Top-notch healthcare coverage – 100% paid medical, dental, and vision for employees, plus 80% coverage for dependents (because we care about your whole nest). - Flexible PTO – take the time you need to recharge, explore, or just have a lazy day by the pond. - 401k plan – because even ducks need to plan for the future. - Flexible work environment - spend most of the week in the office collaborating with the flock, and work from wherever you're most productive the rest of the time. Specifics are role dependent and as agreed upon with your manager WHY MOTHERDUCK We're a ~110-person, Series B team building on one of the fastest-growing open source projects in data. We're small enough that your work shows up on the website next week, and growing fast enough that there's always something new to figure out. How we work comes down to four values: - Thoughtfulness. We care about the people we work with and the craft behind what we ship. - Flexibility. Plans change. We adapt without drama. - Unorthodoxy. We question the default way of doing things, including in marketing. - Agency. We own outcomes and don't wait for permission. PLEASE APPLY Does this role sound appealing to you, but you’re missing some of the requirements or don’t quite think you’re qualified? Please apply anyway. Research has shown that underrepresented groups in technology often shy away from roles which aren’t a 100% match. We aim to build a diverse team and will strongly consider applicants who bring many of the requirements plus have other experiences which round out their qualifications. MotherDuck is proud to be an Equal Employment Opportunity and Affirmative Action employer. We do not discriminate based on race, religion, color, national origin, gender (including pregnancy, childbirth, or related medical conditions), sexual orientation, gender identity, gender expression, age, status as a protected veteran, status as an individual with a disability, or other applicable legally protected characteristics. Our team is a mix of thoughtful, passionate, and empathetic data industry veterans. WHAT YOU WILL DO The Database team is the bridge between DuckDB and the cloud. We own the core server and client extension logic that lets DuckDB run seamlessly, whether it's local or in the cloud, and we work in C++ right alongside the DuckDB codebase itself. Our mission is to push the boundaries of embedded database performance, distributed execution, and user experience, all while staying closely connected to DuckDB Labs (the team behind DuckDB) to align on APIs and shape what's next. Day to day, we drive major projects in dual execution, resource assignment, and system reliability, while also handling incoming issues and lending our DuckDB expertise to other teams. We collaborate closely across MotherDuck and with the wider DuckDB community, making sure people get the best of both local and cloud worlds. This role is ideally based in Amsterdam or Berlin, but we are also open to great candidates remotely in Europe. Key Responsibilities: - Own major projects in our dual execution stack, so DuckDB can process queries seamlessly whether they're running locally or in the cloud. - Help build a cloud platform that dynamically assigns resources, so DuckDB stays efficient whether someone's running a tiny workload or pushing our biggest, highest-memory instances. - Lead cross-functional work with our frontend, platform, and infrastructure teams to keep the user experience coherent end to end. - Push the state of the art in embedded database performance, distributed execution, and DuckDB internals. - Deepen your DuckDB expertise and share it with the rest of the company through mentorship and documentation. - Work directly with our support team to debug issues, learn from real usage patterns, and prioritize the improvements that matter most. - Improve systems holistically... spotting architectural challenges early and clearing bottlenecks before they become problems. - Mentor teammates and help raise the bar for engineering practices across the team. - Work closely with DuckDB Labs (which grew out of the Database Architectures group at CWI, where vectorized execution and DuckDB were born) to help align on APIs and shape where DuckDB goes next. WHAT WE PROVIDE - The opportunity to participate and contribute to DuckDB, one of most popular modern open source analytical databases. - Competitive salary and stock options so you have a stake in our flock’s success. - Flexible time off – take the time you need to recharge, explore, or just have a lazy day by the pond. - A good pension plan - Legendary company events – we bring the whole flock together once a year for unforgettable team gatherings a year to keep our bonds strong. - Hybrid work environment – Spend three days a week in the office collaborating with the flock, and work from wherever you’re most productive the rest of the time—whether that’s your home office, a coffee shop, or a peaceful lakeside retreat. We have to warn you though, most of us like the office so much we come anyway. It’s on the river Ij, with a great lunch every day.
