Location: Toronto, Ontario, Canada Workplace: Hybrid ABOUT SENTRY Software runs the world and the pace is faster than ever. Sentry helps developers fix errors and performance issues before users notice, so teams can spend less time firefighting and more time building. Trusted by 200,000+ organizations, Sentry is today’s application monitoring standard and our team is building its AI-native future. ABOUT THE ROLE Sentry’s Foundational Storage team builds and supports the stateful storage systems that all our products rely on: object storage, relational databases, key-value stores, and caches. We help Sentry engineers store and access data consistently, durably, securely, and efficiently as our products and traffic grow. We develop storage services like our open-source Objectstore https://github.com/getsentry/objectstore and build libraries and APIs that make existing storage systems easier to use. In our own services, we design storage protocols that keep data consistent across backends, even through concurrent updates and failures. Our abstractions let other engineering teams use storage without worrying about which cluster or instance holds their data. As a Senior Software Engineer on the team, you’ll work on both the systems and the code that makes them easy to use. You’ll tackle questions of data consistency, availability, performance, and cost-efficiency, and work with product teams to turn their needs into practical solutions. The goal is simple: make the right way to store data the easy and obvious way. IN THIS ROLE YOU WILL - Design and operate storage systems used across Sentry, including their configuration and performance tuning. - Create APIs and abstractions that make storage easy for product teams to use, with best practices for correctness, security, and scale built in. - Solve storage challenges at scale, including consistency under concurrent access, sharding and rebalancing, and routing reads and writes across storage backends as workloads grow. - Work with product engineers to choose storage approaches, plan safe migrations, and help teams adopt the tools you build. - Plan and build with other Platform and Infrastructure teams, including analytical storage and streaming, to deliver a complete, fault-tolerant platform for product teams. Align roadmaps and standards, and design for failures and recovery. - Improve storage performance and cost efficiency by making better use of backends and resources, while keeping the platform simple for product teams. - Write code primarily in Rust and Python, with clear user-facing documentation. Develop advanced testing scenarios, such as production-scale chaos tests covering backend and infrastructure outages. - Own latency and availability SLOs for your services, improve monitoring and incident response, and participate in the team’s on-call rotation. - Work within Postsres and perform database tuning or query optimization YOU’LL LOVE THIS JOB IF YOU - Enjoy digging into the internals of storage systems and understanding how they behave when traffic grows, requests race, or a dependency has a bad day. - Care about a useful, easy-to-use API as much as what happens behind it. - Like working with other engineers to understand their needs and make their day-to-day work easier. - Want to follow your work from design and code through rollout and production for millions of developers. - Want open-source contributions to be at the center of your day job. QUALIFICATIONS - 5+ years of software engineering experience building and operating distributed, stateful systems in production. - Hands-on experience with object storage, relational databases, and caching systems at production scale. Experience with key-value or wide-column stores is a plus. - An understanding of distributed systems fundamentals, including consistency, concurrency, and what happens when requests fail or need to be retried. - Proficiency in a systems language such as Go, C++, Java, or Rust, and comfort working in Python. We primarily use Rust and Python, and welcome engineers who are new to Rust. - Experience running services on Kubernetes in a cloud environment, including observability, SLOs, and incident response. Familiarity with Terraform is a plus. - Good written and spoken English, especially in explaining technical choices and writing documentation. - Nice to have: experience building shared libraries or internal APIs, migrating data between systems, or improving system performance and cost. Location: Remote; New York; San Francisco Workplace: Hybrid ABOUT ALCHEMY Alchemy is the Web3 infrastructure and developer platform that powers millions of users and the world’s most innovative blockchain applications. From enabling $1+ trillion in financial transactions worldwide to scaling L2s and enabling DeFi, Alchemy provides the infrastructure and tools developers need to build reliable, scalable, and accessible experiences. Trusted by companies like JPMorgan, Stripe, Visa, Franklin Templeton, Nike, and backed by a16z, Coatue, Silver Lake, Lightspeed, and Stanford University, Alchemy is building the foundational layer for a decentralized and AI-enabled Web3 ecosystem. For more information, visit alchemy.com http://alchemy.com. THE ROLE Take new blockchain infrastructure and product ideas from an uncertain problem to a working system. You will help choose what to test, build the smallest experiment that answers the important questions, and turn promising results into production software. You should enjoy reading protocol specifications and unfamiliar code, talking to developers, and building enough to find out whether an idea is useful. You are also willing to stop an experiment when the evidence does not support it. WHAT YOU WILL DO - Identify developer or infrastructure problems that could justify a new blockchain capability or product, working with engineering, Product, and customer-facing teams. - Define each experiment’s hypothesis, success criteria, constraints, and time limit before building. - Prototype across the layers the problem requires: blockchain clients, RPC, indexing, transaction infrastructure, backend services, or smart contracts. - Read protocol specifications and implementation code, then test assumptions with reproducible benchmarks and failure cases. - Evaluate developer or operational value alongside technical feasibility, security, operating cost, and the effort required to support the system. - Take validated ideas through production design, testing, rollout, observability, and operational documentation with partner teams. - Write concise recommendations to continue, change direction, or stop, supported by the experiment’s results. - Participate in production support and incident response for the systems you ship. Own monitoring, runbooks, and fixes after launch. WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR - A track record of taking ambiguous engineering problems through working prototypes and production delivery. - Deep hands-on knowledge of at least one blockchain: its execution model, transaction lifecycle, state, finality, and failure behavior. - Strong software engineering skills and experience building backend or distributed systems. - The ability to read unfamiliar code and specifications, form a testable hypothesis, and design an experiment that can disprove it. - Experience designing reproducible performance benchmarks and using profiling to distinguish CPU, memory, storage, and network bottlenecks. - Evidence of careful reasoning about correctness and security, especially where mistakes affect funds or chain state. - Product judgment: explain who needs a capability, what it improves, and whether the result warrants further investment. - Clear collaboration and documentation so another team can operate or extend what you build. HELPFUL EXPERIENCE - Contributions to blockchain clients, protocol implementations, or open-source infrastructure. - Rust, Go, C++, or other systems programming languages; smart-contract development where relevant. - EVM implementation, CPU microarchitecture, compiler optimization, or hardware performance counters. - RPC performance, transaction submission, simulation, indexing, or cross-chain infrastructure. - Early-stage products where you helped decide what to build and what to stop. WHAT SUCCESS LOOKS LIKE Within six months: - You have completed a scoped experiment and documented a decision to continue, redirect, or stop it, citing the results. - For a bet that proceeds, you have validated a developer or infrastructure use case, delivered a production pilot with correctness checks and a rollback plan, and taken responsibility for its production support. For more information, visit alchemy.com http://alchemy.com. THE ROLE Build the systems that turn blockchain activity into data developers can use. Alchemy’s Data Services work includes token, portfolio, and transfer APIs, with streaming in the updated roadmap. You will own backend projects from ingestion through serving, making data correct, fresh, and fast to query. You will work with Product and customer-facing teams to understand what developers need, then ship improvements and measure their effect on reliability, performance, and cost. WHAT YOU WILL DO - Build and operate blockchain ingestion, indexing, storage, and API-serving systems. - Handle reorganizations, retries, duplicate events, and historical backfills without silently losing or corrupting data. - Improve query performance and data freshness. Make those properties observable to the team and understandable to customers. - Extend API capabilities and chain coverage, with tests for differences in chain behavior and data semantics. - Develop streaming and event-delivery capabilities with explicit guarantees for ordering, replay, and failure recovery. - Reduce the cost of storing, processing, and serving data through measured changes to architecture and query execution. - Participate in production support and incident response for the systems you own. Maintain monitoring, runbooks, safe rollouts, and fixes that prevent recurrence. WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR - A track record of independently designing, shipping, and operating production backend or distributed data systems. - Strong programming skills in a production backend language, plus experience with databases, indexing, and query performance. - Experience reasoning about consistency, partitioning, asynchronous processing, and failure recovery. - Evidence that you can diagnose a production problem and improve the system beyond the immediate fix. - Sound API design judgment, including compatibility, pagination, error handling, and data contracts. - Clear communication and the ability to turn an ambiguous customer problem into a scoped engineering project. Blockchain experience is helpful, but not required. You should be interested in learning how chain behavior affects data correctness. HELPFUL EXPERIENCE - ClickHouse or other analytical databases; Kafka or similar streaming systems. - Blockchain indexers, EVM logs and traces, finality, or non-EVM data models. - Developer-facing data APIs, real-time delivery, or large historical datasets. - Storage migrations and performance or cost optimization under production traffic. WHAT SUCCESS LOOKS LIKE Within three months: - You have shipped a customer-facing improvement and can show its effect on data quality, freshness, latency, or cost. - You own a production component, have tested its recovery behavior, and have proposed the next improvement using operational evidence and developer feedback.
