Why Sony Interactive Entertainment?
Sony Interactive Entertainment isn’t just the Best Place to Play — it’s also the Best Place to Work. Sony Interactive Entertainment (SIE) is the company behind the PlayStation brand. As a subsidiary of Sony Group Corporation, we’re part of a proud legacy of innovation and excellence. SIE is a dynamic technology company, delivering cutting-edge hardware and network services to more than 100 million people and an entertainment leader, home to some of the most beloved and recognizable intellectual properties (IP) in the world. Our role at SIE is to create and nurture the experiences under the PlayStation brand, a name synonymous with entertainment excellence and creativity.
Sr. Principal Engineer, Data & Machine Learning
San Mateo, CA
Why PlayStation Data & Intelligence
PlayStation reaches more than 100+ million people. Behind those experiences is one of the largest consumer data estates in entertainment: tens of petabytes under management and trillions of telemetry events a year, powering personalization, experimentation, partner analytics and enterprise decisions across the company.
We are in the middle of a multi-year shift in how that data creates value. Today intelligence often arrives after the moment has passed. Our goal is a connected intelligence layer where trusted context about players, content, partners and the business is built once, reused everywhere, activated at the point of decision, and improved by evidence about what happened next. That includes serving AI models and agents with the same governed meaning, quality and permissions we give to people.
This role helps shape how that is built across PlayStation.
The Role
We are looking for a Senior Principal Engineer, Data & Machine Learning to serve as chief architect for our Data & Intelligence organization and as the senior technical authority for how SIE builds, reuses and activates trusted data and intelligence.
This is one of SIE’s most senior individual-contributor roles. You will report directly to the Vice President of the organization, sit on the leadership team alongside the Sr. Directors who run our two delivery portfolios, chair our architecture review forum, and lead a community of Principal Engineers anchored to the major architectural seams. You will have no direct reports by design; your leverage comes from the architecture, the standards and the decisions the whole organization builds against.
This is a hands-on role. You will author architectures and reference implementations, prototype uncertain approaches, review the designs and code that matter most, and step in directly when a technical problem puts an important outcome at risk.
What You’ll Own
You will set the architecture for, and drive reuse across, the initiatives that define the next three years of data and intelligence at PlayStation:
A single, reusable understanding of the player.
The context, lifecycle and lifetime-value intelligence that powers experiences and decisions across PlayStation, built once and reused rather than rebuilt per use case.
Content and game understanding.
Intelligence about titles, experiences and how players engage with them, connected through engagement and content graphs to improve discovery, personalization and new AI experiences.
Creator and partner intelligence.
Reusable title, launch and lifecycle intelligence available to partners at the point of decision, before launch, while live and after.
Unified measurement.
Experimentation, attribution and causal measurement so the company knows what changed an outcome, by how much, and what to do next.
Activation.
Real-time signals, activation data products and APIs that deliver trusted context into the systems that personalize and act.
Semantic and conversational intelligence.
A shared layer of business meaning and metrics that people, analytical tools and AI agents can query and trust.
Enterprise decision data.
Decision-grade finance and supply-chain data that accelerates transformation programs across SIE.
Trusted foundations and golden paths.
Data contracts, certification, lineage, unified events and standard publish-to-consume paths, with trust designed into the lifecycle; and launch data readiness so priority launches have their signals and measures from day one.
What You’ll Do
Translate our multi-year Data & Intelligence strategy into a coherent technical strategy and target architecture, with clear principles for trusted data products, ML systems, shared intelligence, evaluation, activation and lifecycle management.
Chair the architecture review forum: set its charter and cadence, publish decisions, track adoption and hold the line on non-conforming designs.
Own the boundary decisions between platform capabilities built for reuse and domain delivery, and keep them stable.
Define and ratify the standards teams build against: data contracts, golden paths, model evaluation and experimentation, observability, reliability, cost and lifecycle management.
Lead the technical direction of our hardest cross-organizational initiatives; author proposals, reference designs and prototypes that establish a credible path from concept to production.
Work directly with engineering and data science teams to remove critical blockers, so that decisions become usable capabilities rather than architecture on paper.
Partner with security, privacy, legal, governance and responsible-AI teams to embed controls throughout the data and ML lifecycle, including the responsible use of proprietary data, third-party and foundation models, and externally hosted AI services.
Identify duplicative capabilities, drive rationalization and retirement, and improve interoperability across SIE’s data and ML landscape.
Advise senior executives on major technical investments, tradeoffs, emerging capabilities and long-term risk; produce the written recommendations that drive annual planning.
Connect technical investment to named consumers, decisions and measurable outcomes; define how we measure adoption, reuse, time-to-action, quality, reliability, safety and cost.
Lead a community of Principal Engineers; mentor Principal, Staff and Senior engineers, architects, ML engineers and data scientists.
Represent SIE’s data and machine learning direction in senior leadership forums, partner organizations and, where appropriate, the broader industry.
What We’re Looking For
15+ years in software, data or machine learning engineering, including 9+ years leading the architecture and delivery of large-scale, complex systems.
A track record of authoring architectures, standards or platforms that were adopted across multiple organizations and stayed in use.
Experience taking data, ML or decisioning systems serving tens of millions of consumers into production and operating them at scale.
Experience chairing, or being the deciding technical voice in, an architecture review forum spanning multiple engineering organizations.
Deep expertise in at least two of: reusable data products, semantic and metadata layers and data contracts; ML platforms, lifecycle management, evaluation and decisioning; real-time signals, distributed inference and activation platforms; experimentation and causal measurement; generative AI, retrieval and agentic systems; responsible AI, privacy and technical governance.
Strong command of distributed systems, cloud, data architecture, APIs, security, reliability, observability and performance engineering.
Demonstrated ability to influence senior executives, engineering and product leaders, and cross-functional partners without direct authority.
Outstanding written communication. This role leads through documents.
Experience mentoring Staff, Principal or similarly senior technical professionals.
Master’s degree in Computer Science, Machine Learning, Engineering or a related discipline, or equivalent experience.
Nice to Have
Data and ML applied in gaming, entertainment, media, digital commerce or another large-scale consumer ecosystem.
Personalization, recommendations, customer intelligence, content intelligence, experimentation or predictive decisioning at scale.
Shared data or ML platforms serving multiple products and organizational domains.
Feature, vector, graph, semantic or knowledge platforms; AI gateways and LLMOps.
Experience translating research or emerging technology into production capabilities.
Contributions to the field through open source, patents, publications, standards or conference talks.
Why You’ll Love This Role
Set the technical direction for data and intelligence across PlayStation.
Own the architecture behind experiences reaching more than 100 million people.
Report directly to the VP and sit on the organization’s leadership team.
Build once, reuse everywhere: the mandate is to end duplicated work, not add to it.
Work with strong Principal and Staff engineers, data scientists and product leaders across the company.
Stay hands-on at the most senior IC level.

An overview of this role
As a Senior or Staff Backend Engineer with the
Database Excellence group
, you'll build and evolve database automation and PostgreSQL as a service capabilities for GitLab. The level will be determined during the hiring process. You'll use Go to automate the full lifecycle of PostgreSQL across GitLab's infrastructure, making database operations safer, more consistent, and easier to scale for databases that sit behind high-throughput, always-on internet services. You'll work closely with partner teams to shape how GitLab provisions and manages PostgreSQL in a fully remote, highly collaborative environment.
Some examples of our projects:
SQL Traffic Replay Tooling
, which validates upgrades and changes against real production workloads.
PostgreSQL as a Service Platform
, which provides standardized, automated provisioning and lifecycle management for internal product databases.
PostgreSQL Major Version Upgrade Automation
, which supports safe, repeatable major upgrades at GitLab.com scale.
What you’ll do
Design, build, and maintain Go-based automation that manages the full PostgreSQL lifecycle, including provisioning, configuration, upgrades, failover, scaling, and decommissioning, reducing reactive operational work that currently takes more than 80% of the team's time.
Build automation that works across infrastructure-as-code tooling and cloud infrastructure, and evaluate operator-based approaches as the platform evolves.
Use AI agents as a regular part of building and operating services, including implementation, review, and reducing repetitive work, while keeping the context agents need in the repository so the whole team can build on it.
Build for internet scale by designing automation and services for high-throughput, always-on production workloads, where GitLab.com traffic sets the bar for correctness, latency, and availability.
Integrate compute, storage, networking, identity and access management, and managed data services across cloud providers into one coherent PostgreSQL platform instead of creating bespoke setups for each database.
Build GitLab's PostgreSQL as a service platform to replace bespoke database setups with standardized, automated provisioning and lifecycle management, so supporting more databases doesn't require growing the operations team at the same rate.
Collaborate closely with product management, infrastructure, software delivery, and other engineering teams to design and ship high-performing solutions.
Research, design, and implement improvements to PostgreSQL performance, scalability, and data health, helping maintain more than 8 months of operational runway for all critical database saturation points.
Review database automation and Go changes from other engineers and contributors, with attention to safety, maintainability, and performance.
Document automation practices, PostgreSQL operational patterns, and guidance that helps engineers use and contribute to the platform.
Build safe, repeatable automation for PostgreSQL major version upgrades at GitLab.com scale, validating changes against real production traffic before rollout.
Operate what you build in production from end to end, using production feedback to guide each iteration.
What you’ll bring
Professional software engineering experience working with PostgreSQL in large, complex production environments, including experience building or operating a database-as-a-service product.
Proficiency with Go, including designing, implementing, testing, and reviewing backend services.
Experience developing Kubernetes operators, controllers, or similar automation for the lifecycle of stateful services, especially databases. Kubernetes experience is one way to demonstrate this skill, but isn't required; comparable experience building database or infrastructure automation is welcome.
Comfort with infrastructure as code and core database operations concepts such as high availability, replication, backups, and system-level performance trade-offs.
Familiarity with Ruby is a plus but isn't required. Much of GitLab's application codebase uses Ruby on Rails, and being able to read it helps when designing automation that application teams depend on. We’ll expect you to become comfortable with it on the job, not on day one.
Strong written communication skills and comfort working asynchronously in an all-remote, distributed team.
Self-directed work style with effective organizational skills, the ability to manage priorities as a "manager of one," and alignment with GitLab's values of transparency, collaboration, inclusion, and open source contribution, as well as its
operating principles
.
Ownership of the technical direction for a major initiative such as the PostgreSQL as a service platform, turning an ambiguous problem into an architecture and a sequenced plan that several engineers can execute in parallel.
Influence beyond the team, setting the patterns other engineers follow, partnering with sibling database, infrastructure, and platform teams, and growing engineers through design reviews and mentorship.
About the team
The

Why work at Higgsfield AI?
Higgsfield AI https://higgsfield.aiis the fastest-scaling generative AI company in history, hitting $500M in annual revenue run rate, 25M+ users worldwide, 6M+ generations per day, and powering 390 of Fortune 500 brands.
We’re building at the absolute frontier of AI-powered video creation and next-generation creative tools. Joining Higgsfield means becoming part of a high-impact team shaping the future of AI-native experiences, at a company that isn’t just moving fast, but rewriting what fast looks like.
WHY THIS ROLE EXISTS
Higgsfield has grown roughly 35x in the last twelve months. 390 of the Fortune 500 are already on the product, and the adoption patterns look like nothing that came before — teams find us, adopt us and expand without anyone selling to them. That’s what an AI-native product does, and it’s how the company is built: small teams, no inherited process, decisions made in hours rather than quarters.
The opportunity now is to take that industry by industry. Advertising. Entertainment. Gaming. Retail. E-commerce. Each one is a category where a single person can go in, land the anchor accounts and own the vertical outright.
We’re hiring hunters for that. Not account managers working inbound — people who pick a vertical, build the target list themselves, and take it.
WHAT YOU’LL DO
Own global B2B partnerships
- Drive the full partnership lifecycle end to end — sourcing, pitching, structuring, negotiating and closing deals with international partners.
- Build and scale the partnerships pipeline across key markets. You own the target list, not just the deals handed to you.
- This role travels: partners, in their market, in person.
Lead commercial execution
- Own revenue targets and deliver against multi-million-dollar goals.
- Structure complex deals, paid pilots and multi-year strategic agreements.
- Restart stalled deals because you decided to, not because a process told you to.
Shape strategy and go-to-market
- Identify high-value use cases with partners and translate Higgsfield’s capabilities into outcomes they can defend inside their own organisation.
- Design partnership models, pricing structures and GTM approaches from scratch.
- Switch verticals fast — a media holding this month, a consumer brand the next, a platform after that.
Own accounts and grow them
- Build durable relationships at C-level with founders, operators and decision-makers.
- Drive expansion, upsell and new revenue streams inside existing accounts.
- Carry the full commercial picture: what a deal books and what it costs us to serve.
REQUIREMENTS:
- 7+ years in enterprise sales, business development or partnerships, closing complex multi-million-dollar deals you personally sourced and negotiated.
- At least 3 years working in international markets — at a global company, or in a role where you owned deals or operations across multiple countries.
- Experience at a company that scaled aggressively, where daily progress was expected and intensity was normal.
- You hold both sides of the business in your head. You can say what a partnership earns and what it costs to deliver in the same sentence.
- Comfortable with almost no structure. You’ll get context and access, not process.
- Heavy international travel.
- Fluent English and Russian.
Nice to have
- Sold into enterprise media, advertising, entertainment or consumer brands.
- Ran a P&L, a market or a vertical as a GM or country lead.
- Broke into an international agency or global commercial organisation as a non-native speaker.
WHAT WE WEIGH OVER BRAND NAMES
We optimise for intensity and ownership. Three deals you actually built beats a decorated CV of roles you inherited, and a thin LinkedIn profile is not a problem here — several of our strongest people have one. If your best work isn’t visible online, tell us about it in your application.
WHAT WE OFFER
- Competitive base salary in USD, based on your experience, skills, and the scope of the role.
- Equity participation through the company’s stock option program, giving you the opportunity to share in Higgsfield’s long-term growth.
- Relocation support for candidates moving from another city or country.
- A highly collaborative, fast-paced environment where you can work directly with experienced leaders and have a meaningful impact on the product and company.
- Opportunities for professional growth, ownership, and career development as the company scales.
- Company-provided equipment, meals, transportation, and other office benefits.
Location: Almaty or San Francisco (onsite), with heavy international travel and regular trips to the other hub. Our team works from the office six days per week. We believe in-person collaboration is an important part of how we move quickly, solve complex problems, and build strong teams.
Also hiring: GM, Strategic Partnerships — same seniority, focused on GPU and compute economics, financial planning and investor-facing strategy. If your background leans consulting or corporate finance, or you come from the cloud and compute world, apply there https://jobs.ashbyhq.com/higgsfieldai/00807c29-404b-4267-9089-40f031bfc6d1 instead.
