Category Labs (formerly known as Monad Labs) is a team of systems engineers and researchers on a mission to design and build at the frontier of decentralized technology. We strive to deliver significant improvements over existing blockchain solutions. After raising $225M in series A funding, led by Paradigm, we are growing our team.
We’re the team behind Monad, a high-performance, EVM-compatible Layer 1 whose public mainnet is now live. We write the core software that runs it: a parallel-execution EVM https://github.com/category-labs/monad, a custom state database, and a BFT consensus client https://github.com/category-labs/monad-bft, all developed in the open.
THE ROLE
We are looking for an exceptional compiler engineer to work on challenging greenfield projects that accelerate bytecode execution. For example, you will you will work on a bytecode execution graph builder which will enable speculative pre-execution of potential control flow paths. Your work will require intensive research and engineering and will help accelerate a platform securing billions of dollars in value. Experience with crypto is not expected.
WHAT YOU WILL DO
- Work on greenfield performance-oriented projects in a fast-moving startup environment
- Research ideas for accelerating EVM bytecode execution
- Design and implement performant production systems
WHO YOU ARE
- Proven track record in compiler design and system architecture
- Strong background in software engineering principles principles
- Experience with industry-standard compiler technologies
- Good understanding of testing and benchmarking
- Industry and/or academic experience working on compilers for parallel architectures
- Strong C++ programming skills
- Knowledge of type theory is a plus
WHY WORK WITH US
- Challenging problems: You’ll work on extremely challenging problems with massive impact. See our Blogs https://www.category.xyz/blogs and Publications & Talks https://www.category.xyz/papers-talks for a flavor of the problems we are solving in the real world.
- Huge opportunity: The Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM) standard is ubiquitous, but existing EVM-compatible chains are very slow. Monad’s core innovations offer developers the best of both worlds (portability and performance) and are a game-changer for mass user adoption in crypto.
- The right team: You’ll be part of a small, exceptional team (engineers and researchers make up 90% of the team).
- Open by default: Our core software is public on GitHub. You’ll build in the open, and your work ships where the whole ecosystem can see it.
- Culture: We’re a lean team working together to achieve very ambitious goals. We are united in our culture of collaboration, low ego, and high-quality output. As an early member of our team, you’ll help to shape our culture.
- Compensation: You’ll receive a competitive salary and equity package.
- Resources and growth: We’re well-capitalized, with backing https://x.com/monad_xyz/status/1777687376136982767 from leading venture funds like Paradigm, Electric Capital, Greenoaks, Dragonfly, and Coinbase Ventures. We keep a lean team, and this is a rare opportunity to join. You’ll learn a lot and grow as our company scales.
HOW WE USE AI
We’re an AI-native team, and we expect engineers to use coding agents and keep up as the tooling evolves. A few things we believe:
- AI is leverage, not a crutch. Review what it generates with the same scrutiny you’d give a teammate’s PR, and own every line you ship.
- Judgment is what matters, not how long you typed by hand. We won’t ask for “N years of [tool].” The stack turns over every few months, so what matters is that you pick up new tools fast and know where and when they apply.

About the job
As a member of the AI model team, you will drive innovation in training and optimizing vision-language models with a focus on real-world deployment. Your work will span the full model development lifecycle - from data curation and training pipeline design to model evaluation and optimization - with the goal of building models that are both highly capable and practical to deploy at scale.
You will work across a wide spectrum of multimodal architectures integrating text and vision, applying state-of-the-art research to improve model quality, efficiency, and domain-specific performance. We expect you to bring a research-driven mindset combined with strong engineering discipline - someone who can identify the right technique for a given problem, implement it rigorously, and measure its impact clearly.
You will work closely with a small, high-caliber team where your contributions will have direct and meaningful impact. If you are passionate about pushing the boundaries of what multimodal AI can achieve in production environments, this is your opportunity.
Responsibilities
Conduct end-to-end research and engineering on vision-language models, covering training, evaluation, and optimization across the full model development lifecycle.
Design and implement post-training pipelines including supervised fine-tuning, knowledge distillation, and reinforcement learning from human feedback.
Develop and maintain high-quality multimodal datasets, including data curation, filtering, and balancing for domain-specific tasks.
Drive model efficiency and deployability, adapting models for resource-constrained environments using compression and optimization techniques.
Design and implement evaluation frameworks and benchmarks to measure model performance, robustness, and real-world task success.
Build and scale training workflows across distributed GPU infrastructure.
Identify and resolve bottlenecks in training pipelines to achieve state-of-the-art model quality on target benchmarks.
Contribute to and leverage open-source ecosystems including models, datasets, and tooling to accelerate development.
Stay current with the latest research in multimodal learning and vision-language systems, translating relevant findings into practical improvements.
Publish research findings in top-tier AI conferences and journals where applicable.
Degree in Computer Science, Machine Learning, or a related field; MS/PhD preferred.
Strong experience with multimodal post-training workflows including supervised fine-tuning, knowledge distillation, and reinforcement learning from feedback.
Hands-on experience with parameter-efficient fine-tuning and distributed training frameworks.
Demonstrated ability to build and improve vision-language models with measurable results on standard benchmarks or real-world tasks.
Experience adapting models for resource-constrained environments.
Proven open-source contributions in multimodal AI on GitHub or HuggingFace.
Publications at top AI conferences (NeurIPS, ICML, ICLR, CVPR, ECCV etc.)

ABOUT RAMP
Ramp is building the smart infrastructure for finance teams, embedded in the transaction flow of every dollar a business spends. We automate how over $275B in annualized spend flows in and out of 85,000+ companies: authorizing payments, flagging risk, categorizing spend, and closing books.
The problems are high-stakes, data-dense, and unforgiving.
We hire people with high agency and high urgency. We look for slope over intercept. We care less about where you trained and more about what you’ve built. At Ramp, everyone is a builder who owns problems end to end and makes consequential decisions that shape the outcome.
The median Ramp customer saves 7.5% and grows revenue 16% in their first year – far in excess of businesses operating without Ramp. We believe every ambitious company deserves the same.
