ABOUT US:
AI NEEDS A NEW INFRASTRUCTURE LAYER. WE'RE BUILDING IT AT MODAL.
Every era of computing brought new workloads that previous infrastructure couldn't support: mainframes, databases, and the cloud. Each time, the company that rebuilt the layer underneath defined the decade. AI is no different, except it touches everything instead of one slice, and the window to build the layer underneath it is open right now.
Our customers include category-defining companies like Ramp https://modal.com/blog/how-ramp-built-a-full-context-background-coding-agent-on-modal, Cognition, DoorDash, and Suno. They rely on Modal for instant GPU access, sub-second container starts, and native storage, so it's simple to serve low-latency inference, fine-tune models, and access production-ready sandboxes at scale.
We've passed $1B in annualized run rate, up 15x from a year ago. In October 2026 we raised a $750M Series D led by Accel at a $15.75B valuation.
Our team includes creators of popular open-source projects (e.g.,Seaborn https://github.com/mwaskom/seaborn,Luigi https://github.com/spotify/luigi), academic researchers, international olympiad medalists, and experienced engineering and product leaders with decades of experience.

Workplace: Hybrid
ABOUT THE ROLE
Millions of small businesses and their advisors use Xero reports and insights to decide what to do next. AI is changing how people understand their finances faster than any shift since the cloud, and Reporting & Insights is where Xero meets that change. Over the next few years we’re evolving reporting and insights for the agentic era, where customers ask an AI about their numbers as often as they open a Balance Sheet. As the senior technical leader for Reporting & Insights, you’ll set the multi-year technical direction, from the reports businesses file to the insights that tell them what to do next. You’ll also help hire the first Reporting & Insights engineers in Vancouver and decide how they work.
THE TECHNICAL CHALLENGES
Set a 3-year architecture across Reporting & Insights. Reporting and Xero Analytics run on a mix of modern services and systems that have grown with Xero over many years. You’ll define one target state across both, decide how they build on Xero’s data platform, and secure the investment to get there. You’ll design for high throughput, low latency and resilience, so reporting and insights scale with Xero’s largest and most complex customers.
Evolve the platform without breaking trust. Accountants file tax returns from these numbers, so correctness comes first. You’ll lead the evolution of the data foundations behind about 150 reports, sequenced across teams and organisational boundaries. Customers keep the numbers they trust, on foundations built for what comes next.
Make reporting and insights AI-native. AI changes what reporting and insights can be: answers to plain-language questions, insights that reach customers where they work, and analysis that once took an accountant hours. Every answer still has to reconcile to the ledger. You’ll define the foundations: how agents query financial data safely, how answers stay grounded and explainable, and how we prove correctness at scale. We want teams across Xero to build on what you create.
IMPACT
In your first six months you’ll own the Reporting & Insights architecture and set a direction for the data platform and the evolution of both products that engineering, Product and leadership back.
At twelve months you will have:
- Set a multi-year technical strategy for Reporting & Insights
- Delivered new foundations for the first major report families, setting Reporting & Insights up for its next phase of growth
- Opened Reporting & Insights to bigger businesses, with performance that scales to our largest customers
- Put shared foundations for AI-native reporting and insights into production
- Grown the Lead and Senior Engineers around you and raised the technical bar across the group
Beyond year one, you’ll shape where Reporting & Insights goes next, and help steer Xero’s wider data and AI direction alongside the leadership team.
OWNERSHIP
You’re the senior technical voice for Reporting & Insights. You own the multi-year technical strategy and target architecture, and you make the calls that cross team and domain boundaries. You shape the roadmap with the GM and Product, decide where we invest in foundational capabilities, and align teams across regions behind one direction. You stay hands-on where it counts: reference implementations, foundational frameworks and the hardest architecture problems
WHO YOU’LL WORK WITH
You’ll report to the GM of Engineering. You’ll partner with the engineering managers and teams across Reporting & Insights, who know these products and their data in depth. You’ll shape the product and AI roadmap with the Reporting & Insights Product leads. You’ll also work with Principal Engineers and platform teams across Xero, including the accounting core and data platform teams that own systems we depend on.
WHAT YOU BRING
Must-have:
- You’ve set technical strategy for a domain or portfolio over a 2 to 3 year horizon, and aligned multiple teams behind it.
- You’ve led the evolution of a large, high-traffic, correctness-critical system across organisational boundaries.
- You have depth in high-throughput, low-latency, resilient distributed systems and data-heavy architecture, and you still contribute hands-on where it matters.
- You connect external shifts, AI above all, to product and architecture strategy, and you know where LLMs and agents belong in a system.
- You grow leaders. You’ve mentored Lead and Senior Engineers into bigger roles, and your writing turns complex direction into decisions people act on.
Nice to have:
- Financial, reporting or analytics domain experience
- LLM or agent-based features in production
- .NET and AWS
- A presence in the wider tech community through talks, writing or open source
HOW WE WORK
We’re bold in our vision and pragmatic in execution, delivering useful improvements along the way rather than waiting for a large rewrite. We invest in AI to learn faster and focus effort on higher-value problems, while engineers stay accountable for what they ship. We use shared frameworks to avoid reinvention, leaving teams room to innovate. Engineers own their work, including quality, reliability, and on-call. Leaders set context and priorities, and engineers help shape the solutions.
WHERE WE WORK
We offer a hybrid model that blends the flexibility of working from home with the collaboration of the office, including designated boost days in our modern office spaces. This role is open to hybrid candidates in Vancouver, British Columbia, or San Mateo, California. We also welcome applications from candidates across Canada interested in relocating to Vancouver, and from remote candidates in Seattle, Washington.
OUR HIRING PROCESS
1. TX phone screen (45 minutes): a conversation with your Talent Specialist about your background, motivations and the role.
2. Technical assessments: a coding assessment and a systems design assessment, run through an independent third-party provider and based on real-world scenarios.
3. Technical deep dive (45–60 minutes): with a Principal Engineer and the hiring team. You'll walk through a past project you led, covering how you thought about it, executed it and led through its complexity.
4. Values / Future Proof Xero (45 minutes): how you show up day to day, aligned with Xero's values and capabilities such as adaptability, ownership, customer thinking and AI fluency.

We serve billions of requests every week, and you’ve probably seen our results somewhere and used our product without knowing it. We differentiate ourselves by focusing on metrics over features, and reinventing search and discovery from the ground up as a machine learning challenge with the specific goal of improving metrics like revenue. We’re approximately doubling year over year despite the market slowing down and have customers in every eCommerce vertical. We’re a passionate team of technologists who love solving problems and want to make our customers’ and coworkers’ lives better. We value empathy, openness, curiosity, continuous improvement, and are excited by metrics that matter. We believe that empowering everyone in a company to do what they think is best can lead to great things.
JOB SUMMARY
We’re looking for a highly technical, systems-minded Senior Product Manager to lead two critical search intelligence teams: Machine Learning & Recall and Query. Search at Constructor is fundamentally an ML challenge, and this role sits at the absolute entry point of our discovery pipeline, right where shopper intent meets candidate retrieval.
In this role, you will bridge the Query team (understanding what a shopper means across intent, entities, and language) with the Machine Learning & Recall team (retrieving the exact right set of candidate products across massive catalogs). You will define strategy across both domains, balancing state-of-the-art techniques, such as vector search, semantic parsing, dense embeddings, and LLM-assisted query interpretation, with low-latency production execution. You won’t be measured on shipping features for the sake of it; you’ll be measured on candidate quality, query accuracy, and driving business outcomes like conversion rate, search-attributed revenue, and revenue per visit.
WHAT YOU’LL DO
- Set a unified roadmap: Define the multi-quarter vision and strategy across both the Machine Learning & Recall and Query teams, ensuring query understanding and candidate generation evolve hand-in-hand.
- Drive Query intelligence: Lead the Query team to push boundaries in tokenization, spell correction, entity extraction, intent classification, and LLM-assisted query parsing across multiple languages.
- Advance Recall systems: Lead the Machine Learning & Recall team in evolving candidate generation architecture, seamlessly combining traditional keyword search with modern dense embeddings, vector retrieval, and hybrid recall models.
- Move core business metrics: Own measurable lift in search-attributed conversion, revenue per visit, and GMV across all retail customer verticals.
- Turn research into production wins: Work shoulder-to-shoulder with ML researchers, data scientists, and software engineers to take SOTA models from research to low-latency, cost-effective production systems.
- Balance ML performance trade-offs: Make data-backed decisions balancing model complexity, accuracy, inference latency, compute costs, and real-time execution constraints.
- Build evaluation frameworks: Establish robust offline and online measurement systems to evaluate retrieval precision and query understanding accuracy against customer revenue outcomes.
- Orchestrate pipeline handoffs: Ensure candidate product sets and query context flow cleanly into downstream ranking and search quality models without signal loss.
- Solve systemic issues: Lead technical triage when query interpretation or retrieval anomalies occur, building durable, automated fixes rather than one-off patches.
WHAT SUCCESS LOOKS LIKE
Within your first year, you will have:
- Evolved our hybrid recall framework to measurably improve candidate generation precision for long-tail queries and complex catalog structures.
- Driven quantifiable lift in search-attributed conversion and revenue per visit across major customer verticals.
- Stood up an integrated evaluation framework connecting query parsing and candidate recall directly to business outcomes.
- Optimized inference latency and compute infrastructure to ensure high-capacity ML models run fast and cost-effectively in production.

ABOUT THE ROLE:
We are looking for an ML Engineer to own the production inference stack for our text-to-speech (TTS) and speech recognition (ASR) models, end to end. Our research team delivers trained model checkpoints; you will productionize them as low-latency, real-time streaming services that run cost-efficiently on GPUs. The role covers the inference engines, the Kubernetes infrastructure they run on, and the performance benchmarking and accuracy validation that let us ship changes safely. You will bridge research and production, and own latency, throughput, cost and accuracy as we scale.
WHAT YOU’LL DO:
- Build and optimize streaming inference engines for TTS and ASR models, including multi-stage model pipelines.
- Optimize latency (time to first chunk, p50/p99) and throughput using continuous batching, CUDA Graphs, torch.compile and mixed precision.
- Maintain numerical parity with the reference implementation through automated accuracy regression tests, per stage and end to end.
- Deploy and operate GPU inference services on Kubernetes: autoscaling, containerization and infrastructure as code.
- Build CI/CD for model artifacts, with model versioning and reproducible releases.
- Own observability and performance benchmarking: p50/p99 latency, real-time factor (RTF), GPU utilization and cost per request.
- Partner with research to productionize new models.
WHAT YOU’LL BRING:
- Hands-on experience deploying, scaling and optimizing ML models in production, beyond consuming model APIs.
- Working knowledge of the full inference stack, from CUDA kernels to serving frameworks, with depth in some layers; expertise across all of them is not expected.
- GPU performance optimization: profiling (Nsight Systems, PyTorch Profiler), memory bandwidth, CPU-GPU synchronization.
- Solid understanding of model serving: continuous batching, KV cache management, request scheduling.
- Production experience with Kubernetes, CI/CD and cloud infrastructure.
- Strong Python and PyTorch, and a rigorous approach to performance benchmarking.
- Experience with speech or audio models (TTS, ASR, voice conversion).
- Experience with inference frameworks such as vLLM (vLLM-Omni), SGLang, TensorRT-LLM, TensorRT or Triton Inference Server.
COMPENSATION:
When determining compensation, a number of factors will be considered, including skills, experience, job scope, location, and competitive compensation market data.
BENEFITS FOR U.S.-BASED ROLES:
- Competitive salary and generous company equity
- Medical, dental, and vision insurance – 99.99% of premiums covered by Cantina
- 42 days of paid time off, including:
