About Anthropic
Anthropic’s mission is to create reliable, interpretable, and steerable AI systems. We want AI to be safe and beneficial for our users and for society as a whole. Our team is a quickly growing group of committed researchers, engineers, policy experts, and business leaders working together to build beneficial AI systems.
About the role
Anthropic is looking for a Staff+ Software Engineer to work on the vector search infrastructure behind Claude. Retrieval is how Claude learns about the world. Web search across claude.ai, the API and agentic surfaces, memory across conversations, and the reinforcement learning workloads that train our next models all depend on fast, cheap, high-recall nearest-neighbor search over billions of vectors.
You'll join a small team responsible for the vector database layer that serves Claude's retrieval workloads: its architecture, performance, scalability and cost. This is a foundational role. The team is small, core architectural decisions are still open, and the engineers who join now will shape how the system evolves.
The role sits in our Databases organization and works day to day with the Search Platform team, which owns web search indexing, retrieval and serving, and the Memory & Search team, which owns search and memory inside claude.ai.
We're looking for someone who has built vector or search systems that ran in production, at scale, with real users and a real on-call. You'll be hands-on in the code, and you'll also be the person deciding how the pieces fit together.
Key responsibilities
Own the core of Anthropic's vector database layer: index structures, storage layout, query execution and the serving layer
Own production readiness - benchmarking against exact search, capacity planning, onboarding new workloads, and the operational tooling to run it at scale
Drive the recall, latency and cost trade-offs - quantization, filtered search, index build and refresh strategy, and how compute and storage are separated and scaled
Scale throughput by an order of magnitude as research and training demand grows, and work out whether the bottleneck is architecture, hardware or engineering bandwidth
Extend the retrieval stack toward hybrid retrieval - lexical search and fused ranking alongside vector search
Set the evaluation methodology for the system - recall targets, latency objectives, cost per query, and the regression detection that keeps them honest
Set technical direction for a growing team - lead design reviews, make architectural decisions others build on, and mentor the engineers joining the effort
Share the on-call for the systems you own
Minimum qualifications
Direct experience building a vector database or approximate nearest-neighbor search system that ran in production at scale
Deep knowledge of ANN index structures (graph-based, clustering-based or disk-resident approaches), vector quantization and filtered search
Experience with search relevance and ranking
Strong systems programming skills in a language such as Rust, C++ or Go, including performance-critical and memory-intensive code
Experience designing and operating large-scale distributed storage or serving systems with strict latency and reliability requirements
A track record of independently scoping and delivering ambiguous, multi-quarter technical projects
Strong written and verbal communication, with experience driving alignment across teams with different priorities
Interest in AI safety and Anthropic's mission
Preferred qualifications
Experience with object-storage-backed or disaggregated compute and storage database designs
Experience building or operating full-text search engines (inverted indexes, BM25) or hybrid retrieval systems
Familiarity with embedding models and the retrieval demands of LLM training and inference
Experience using GPUs or other accelerators for index build or search
Prior experience as a technical lead on a database or search infrastructure team
The annual compensation range for this role is listed below.
For sales roles, the range provided is the role’s On Target Earnings ("OTE") range, meaning that the range includes both the sales commissions/sales bonuses target and annual base salary for the role.
Annual Salary:
$320,000
—
$485,000 USD
Logistics
Minimum education:
Bachelor’s degree or an equivalent combination of education, training, and/or experience
Required field of study:
A field relevant to the role as demonstrated through coursework, training, or professional experience
Minimum years of experience:
Years of experience required will correlate with the internal job level requirements for the position
Location-based hybrid policy:
Currently, we expect all staff to be in one of our offices at least 25% of the time. However, some roles may require more time in our offices.
Visa sponsorship:
We do sponsor visas! However, we aren't able to successfully sponsor visas for every role and every candidate. But if we make you an offer, we will make every reasonable effort to get you a visa, and we retain an immigration lawyer to help with this.
We encourage you to apply even if you do not believe you meet every single qualification.
Not all strong candidates will meet every single qualification as listed. Research shows that people who identify as being from underrepresented groups are more prone to experiencing imposter syndrome and doubting the strength of their candidacy, so we urge you not to exclude yourself prematurely and to submit an application if you're interested in this work. We think AI systems like the ones we're building have enormous social and ethical implications. We think this makes representation even more important, and we strive to include a range of diverse perspectives on our team.
Your safety matters to us.
To protect yourself from potential scams, remember that Anthropic recruiters only contact you from @anthropic.com email addresses. In some cases, we may partner with vetted recruiting agencies who will identify themselves as working on behalf of Anthropic. Be cautious of emails from other domains. Legitimate Anthropic recruiters will never ask for money, fees, or banking information before your first day. If you're ever unsure about a communication, don't click any links—visit

How we're different
We believe that the highest-impact AI research will be big science. At Anthropic we work as a single cohesive team on just a few large-scale research efforts. And we value impact — advancing our long-term goals of steerable, trustworthy AI — rather than work on smaller and more specific puzzles. We view AI research as an empirical science, which has as much in common with physics and biology as with traditional efforts in computer science. We're an extremely collaborative group, and we host frequent research discussions to ensure that we are pursuing the highest-impact work at any given time. As such, we greatly value communication skills.
The easiest way to understand our research directions is to read our recent research. This research continues many of the directions our team worked on prior to Anthropic, including: GPT-3, Circuit-Based Interpretability, Multimodal Neurons, Scaling Laws, AI & Compute, Concrete Problems in AI Safety, and Learning from Human Preferences.
Come work with us!
Anthropic is a public benefit corporation headquartered in San Francisco. We offer competitive compensation and benefits, optional equity donation matching, generous vacation and parental leave, flexible working hours, and a lovely office space in which to collaborate with colleagues.

- A track record of hitting or exceeding outbound meeting targets, with meetings that actually convert downstream.
- Confidence on the phone and in writing: you can articulate value clearly whether it's a 30-second cold call or a personalized email.
- Comfort with high volume; you can run 50+ touches a day without sacrificing quality.
- CRM discipline: clean data, updated stages, notes that your AEs can actually use.
- Excited to work with a high-ownership team across multiple time zones.
- Nice to have: experience selling AI, SaaS, or into the home services vertical.
- BONUS: Market/domain knowledge and/or an existing trades network.
WHO YOU ARE
- You're competitive with yourself. You track your numbers, know your conversion rates, and are always looking for the next lever to pull.
- You handle rejection well — not because you ignore it, but because you treat it as signal. A "no" teaches you something about messaging, timing, or targeting.
- You prepare before you pick up the phone. You've looked at the prospect's website, understand their business model, and can speak to their specific pain.
- You're a clear communicator who keeps AEs, managers, and cross-functional partners in the loop without being asked.
- You thrive in ambiguity and create structure: you're energized by a blank page, make sound decisions with incomplete information, and build repeatable process where none exists.
- You have a high motor: self-driven, relentless in pursuit of pipeline, and quick to act without waiting to be told.
- You're already embedding AI into your go-to-market in a systematic way, across prospecting, research, outreach and list building, and can show the workflows you've built and the results they drive.
BENEFITS
- Flexible PTO plus AU holidays
- Company-wide off-sites
- Travel to HQ

We’re training and deploying frontier models for enterprises who are building AI systems. We believe that our work is instrumental to the widespread adoption of AI and we are looking for folks that want to be part of that.
We obsess over what we build. Each one of us is responsible for contributing to increasing the capabilities of our models and the value they drive for our customers. Cohere is a team of researchers, engineers, designers, and more, who are all passionate about their craft.
We are a global technology company headquartered in Toronto with key offices in London, New York City, San Francisco, Montreal, Paris, Berlin and Seoul. Join us!
Why This Role?
We're seeking an experienced Program Manager to join Cohere's customer-facing Program Management team, with a focus on public sector and defence accounts in Europe, particularly in Germany. This is a highly specialised role requiring an individual who understands technical program delivery, the technical complexity of frontier AI models and the unique requirements of government and defence organisations.
You will be the critical bridge between our cutting-edge AI capabilities and the specific needs of Ministries, Agencies, and defence organisations across Europe. You'll navigate complex procurement processes, stringent security requirements, data sovereignty concerns, and regulatory compliance while ensuring our customers successfully deploy and scale our AI solutions.
In this role, you'll collaborate with our Strategic Customer team, Applied ML (AML) Engineering, Forward Deployed Engineering (FDE), Platform, Product, and Go-to-Market teams, serving as the technical program lead and trusted advisor for our most sensitive and high-impact government and defence engagements.
Location: Germany
Eligibility: This individual must be a German citizen living in Germany and fluent in German, enabling immediate engagement with critical defense and national security customers.
Security Clearance: German security clearance is not required, but is a strong nice-to-have.
What You'll Do
Customer Program Leadership:
- Own end-to-end technical program delivery for Germany and broader European public sector and defence customers, from initial deployment through production scaling
- Serve as the primary technical program point of contact for customers, building trusted relationships with departmental CIOs, IT directors, and technical teams
- Translate complex public sector and defence requirements (security, compliance, accessibility, bilingualism, data sovereignty) into actionable engineering plans
- Navigate complex procurement processes, RFP responses, and contractual technical obligations.
Strategic Communication:
- Provide clear, timely, and objective communication across Cohere's engineering organisation, customer stakeholders, pubic sector and defence leadership
- Translate between AI/ML technical concepts and government-appropriate language for decision-makers who may not have deep technical backgrounds
- Present technical roadmaps and status updates to senior stakeholders including departmental executives
- Represent Cohere's technical capabilities in sensitive government and defence contexts.
Complex Program Management:
- Create and manage project schedules that account for public sector and defence timelines, security review processes, and approval cycles
- Identify and manage dependencies across government departments, security authorities, cloud service providers, and internal Cohere teams
- Navigate risks unique to government and defence deployments: privacy compliance, security, political and regulatory, technology and infrastructure.
- Drive alignment between product development priorities and specific customer requirements.
Technical Delivery & Execution:
- Ensure on-time delivery of AI solutions that meet security, privacy, accessibility, and performance standards
- Coordinate technical work across multiple teams: model customisation, security hardening, integration with government systems, bilingual support
- Establish governance checkpoints appropriate for high-stakes government and defence deployments
- Problem-solve complex technical challenges in air-gapped, on-premises, or highly regulated environments.
You May Be a Good Fit If:
Required Experience:
- 6+ years of experience as a customer-facing Technical or Engineering Program Manager in AI/ML consulting, technology transformation, or enterprise software delivery.
- Excellent executive communication and stakeholder management.
- Experience working with government, defence, or heavily regulated customers.
- Proven track record managing complex, multi-stakeholder technical programs with stringent compliance requirements.
- Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field; advanced degree or technical certs a plus.
Technical Background:
- Strong understanding of enterprise software deployment architectures (cloud, on-premises, hybrid, air-gapped)

- Comfortable discussing API integrations, model inference, data pipelines, and ML operations with technical stakeholders.
Government & Defence Acumen:
- Deep understanding of how government and defence organisations procure, evaluate, and deploy technology
- Familiarity with European government requirements: data sovereignty, privacy laws (Privacy Act), accessibility standards, official languages obligations, security classifications
- Understanding of defence and national security considerations in AI deployment
- Experience with Algorithmic Impact Assessments or AI ethics frameworks is a strong asset
- Eligible to obtain a German security clearance
Nice to Have:
- Active German security clearance
- Bilingual (English/German) proficiency
- Background in or strong familiarity with European defence, intelligence, or critical infrastructure sectors
- Experience with GC Cloud services (Azure, AWS GovCloud) or Protected B/C environments
- Project management certification (PMP, PgMP) or government-specific methodologies.
Security Clearance Requirements
This role strongly prefers eligibility for German government security clearance.
We are looking for candidates eligible for German government clearance, meaning that they require German citizenship. In addition, this individual is required to be based in Germany and be fluent in German as this will enable immediate engagement with critical defence and national security customers.
What Makes This Role Unique
This isn't typical program management - it's a highly specialised role at the intersection of frontier AI, national security, and public sector digital transformation. You'll work on some of Canada's most sensitive and impactful AI deployments, helping government organisations harness cutting-edge technology while maintaining the highest standards of security, ethics, and accountability.

You’ll look after publisher relationships end to end and shape campaigns that bring new customers to our websites, optimising them towards lifetime value and first-time payers. Working across Impact and PartnerStack, you’ll manage a multi-million dollar channel and be accountable for clear, measurable returns.
This is a rare chance to help build an affiliate channel that sets the standard for SaaS, at a global, publicly listed company. You’ll help us move from doing acquisition well to doing it at scale, building tools and workflows (many powered by AI) that make growth repeatable. You’ll be the person who can sit down with an engineer or applied scientist to work through tracking, attribution and incrementality, then turn those insights into plans that publishers, partners and stakeholders get behind.
The team & how they connect
You’ll join our affiliates team, part of Xero’s wider performance marketing function, working alongside a fellow Affiliates Manager in Sydney who specialises in publisher relationships. The two of you will share ownership of the channel, with your measurement and technical know-how complementing their partner expertise. You’ll Make it together with product, data science, engineering, brand and our external affiliate agency to bring every campaign to life.
Initially, the role will focus on
➔ Getting hands-on with our affiliate platforms, Impact for Xero and PartnerStack for Melio, and the tracking and reporting behind them.
➔ Reviewing performance and attribution data across both programmes, and closing any tracking gaps quickly.
➔ Growing and nurturing high-quality publisher partnerships across our core markets of Australia, the UK and the US.
➔ Shaping the channel’s roadmap, including AI-powered tools and automation that help us scale acquisition.
Where and how you can work
This role can be based anywhere in Australia or New Zealand, near one of our offices. We work in a hybrid way, mixing time with your team in the office with time working from home, and our offices host regular boost days that make catching up in person easy.
Here are some of the things we are looking for
➔ You’ll bring hands-on affiliate marketing experience at scale, whether from an affiliate network, platform, agency or the client side.
➔ Experience running programmes on platforms such as Impact or PartnerStack, from partner recruitment through to optimisation and reporting, is something you bring.
➔ A strong grasp of tracking, attribution, measurement and incrementality means you enjoy getting into the detail with engineers and data scientists.
➔ Building trusted relationships comes naturally to you, from publishers and partners to technical and business stakeholders.
➔ Owning budgets and commercial targets feels familiar, and you can turn data into clear insights that show the value of the channel.
➔ Curiosity about AI is part of how you work, and you Make it happen by finding, testing and rolling out new tools that help the channel scale.
Apply even if your experience isn’t a perfect match! At Xero, we hire based on your skills, passion, and the unique perspective you can bring to enhance our culture and team.

THE ROLE & TEAM
As GM, Legal - Global Employment, you will own how Xero supports its people and manages employment risk across a global technology business. You are the senior strategic legal partner to PX (our people experience organisation) and a trusted adviser to Xero's executive leadership team on workforce strategy, organisational change, and complex employment matters. You bring sound judgement to the highest-impact issues, while setting the global frameworks, standards, and tools that let the wider business manage routine matters with confidence and consistency.
This is a functional leadership role with no direct reports, suited to someone who leads through expertise, influence, and delivery rather than headcount. You will set the direction for global employment legal support, work closely with regional Legal teams and other REAL (Risk, Ethics, Advocacy and Legal) specialists, and personally take on the matters that call for deep experience and judgement. You will also partner with Employee Relations on the legal dimensions of sensitive investigations and employee matters, complementing their operational expertise with strategic legal advice.
This role reports to the SVP/EGM Legal and can be based in San Mateo, Melbourne or Sydney.
WHAT YOU'LL DO
- Partner with PX leadership and senior business leaders on workforce strategy, organisational design, restructures, reward, senior employee matters and cross-border initiatives.
- Provide clear, practical advice on global employment and labour law, including investigations, performance management, discrimination and harassment, contracts, policies, disputes and regulatory matters.
- Set and own Xero's global employment legal strategy, risk framework, standards, escalation paths, playbooks and self-service resources.
- Partner with regional Legal GMs on routine employment matters and ensure consistent, coordinated advice across jurisdictions.
- Lead complex employment disputes, claims, regulatory inquiries and sensitive investigations.
- Support the employment aspects of M&A, integrations and major business change.
- Manage external employment counsel and drive proportionate, cost-effective use of external advice.
- Build training, tools and AI-enabled resources that help PX and leaders manage routine matters confidently.
- Work collaboratively with other members of the REAL team to bring the right expertise together on global workforce matters.
SUCCESS LOOKS LIKE
- PX and senior leaders see you as a trusted strategic partner on workforce strategy and change.
- Xero has clear, scalable and practical global employment frameworks.
- Complex employment risks are identified early and managed consistently.
- Legal support is technology-enabled, using AI tools and self-service modalities where appropriate.
- External counsel is used strategically, with stronger internal capability and better cost control.
WHAT YOU'LL BRING
Essential
- Substantial international employment experience and proven experience supporting labour and employment in a global organisation, advising across multiple jurisdictions and operating effectively across regions and time zones.
- Experience in New Zealand, Australia, the United States and the United Kingdom is highly desirable.
- Deep expertise in global employment and labour law, including complex investigations, disputes, restructures and workforce strategy.
- Experience directing others’ work without direct reports, and influencing without formal authority.
- A track record of advising senior PX/HR leaders and business executives as a strategic partner.
- Strong judgement, commercial awareness and the ability to explain complex issues in plain language.
- Experience managing external employment counsel and building scalable legal processes and resources.
- The ability to influence without formal authority, and to roll up your sleeves and do the work personally.
Strongly preferred
- Breadth beyond employment law, such as litigation, transactional work or corporate governance. You are a T-shaped generalist, able to step into work outside your core area.
- Experience in a mid-market technology company of a similar size to Xero, or another fast-moving global business.
- An interest in using data, technology and AI to improve legal support.
WHERE AND HOW YOU CAN WORK
This role can be based in San Mateo, California, Melbourne or Sydney. This role is based in Sydney or Melbourne with a flexible hybrid working setup, spending 1 to 2 days per week in the local office to connect and collaborate.
