Software engineers and AI agents alike suffer from the same problem: finding that one person or place that will answer their tough, specific question. Many solutions promise to solve this with similarity search in vector databases. Unfortunately, finding the answer is often a puzzle with pieces to be collected across a myriad of contradictory sources and cannot be solved without surgical search and careful reasoning.
Spectrum collects data from an organization’s code, docs, and issues, and organizes knowledge in a unified ontology that AI agents can efficiently search through and reason over. We aim to revolutionize the semantic layer space for software-building organizations and move beyond specs that fall out of sync with code, introducing a living spec – one that’s extracted from the whole system and used to keep it aligned. Spectrum is meant to be the single source of truth for all product and architectural knowledge.
Spectrum is a resident of JetBrains' startup incubator, with startup speed and autonomy, and backed by 25 years of developer tooling expertise. We are looking for a top-class ML Engineer who will help us shape the future of software development. You will own our AI and ML engineering stack and help define the research agenda for our team. Your technical vision and design decisions will directly shape the product and determine its success.
Your responsibilities will include:
Designing and building the ML/LLM solution for data ingestion, knowledge extraction, retrieval, and subsequent reasoning.
Creating the datasets, metrics, and pipelines that drive measurable improvements across the system.
Architecting and improving agents for context retrieval, knowledge extraction, and data alignment, which includes prompt engineering, model selection, and inference optimization.
Establishing MLOps practices, including orchestration, observability, and experiment tracking.
Collaborating with the engineering team on system design and with JetBrains Research on the research agenda.
Defining hiring criteria, growing the ML team, and shaping the ML team culture.
We expect you to have:
A proven track record as an ML/AI Lead.
At least five years of experience in ML/AI systems, with at least two years focused on LLMs and generative AI.
A deep understanding of the LLM ecosystem, including model architectures and fine-tuning approaches.
Hands-on experience with:
Prompt engineering and LLM pipeline design, including evaluation.
Agentic frameworks such as LangChain, LlamaIndex, LangSmith, smolagents, or an equivalent.
Vector databases and retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) patterns.
Deploying and scaling LLM-powered applications using APIs (e.g. OpenAI or Anthropic) or open-source models.
Strong Python skills – Kotlin knowledge would be a plus.
Excellent communication skills, with the ability to explain complex technical concepts to diverse audiences.
Proficiency in English, both written and verbal.
Our ideal candidate would have:
Experience with ontologies, knowledge graphs, or graph-based reasoning.
Experience in early-stage startups – you enjoy the zero-to-one phase.
The ability to think strategically about product-led AI, beyond just training models in isolation.
A background in code analysis, developer tools, or software engineering research.
Experience with multi-agent systems or complex agentic workflows.
Actively contributed to relevant open-source projects or publications.
What we offer
A competitive salary and JetBrains benefits.
A generous runway and corporate resources with startup autonomy.

At Render, we’re building the modern cloud platform for developers creating AI-native, full-stack, multi-service applications. Our mission is to eliminate the tradeoff between the power of hyperscalers and the simplicity of developer-friendly platforms—so teams can ship fast, scale reliably, and focus on their product, not infrastructure.
Unlike complex hyperscalers or ephemeral edge/serverless solutions, Render offers a developer-first experience with persistent compute, dynamic autoscaling, built-in orchestration, and observability, allowing teams to launch, scale, and manage real-world applications without writing infrastructure code or managing servers. Whether you're building LLM-powered applications, scalable SaaS products, or async processing pipelines, Render empowers teams to move fast and scale confidently from MVP to millions of users.
Our platform is trusted by over 7 million developers worldwide and continues to grow rapidly. In February 2026, we raised an additional $100M in Series C financing, bringing our total funding to $260M, to accelerate our vision of making cloud infrastructure both powerful and intuitive—designed for the speed of modern AI development.
We’re a diverse and talented team that values craft, velocity, and user experience. If you’re excited to help shape the future of the intelligent cloud and empower developers everywhere, we’d love to hear from you.

Through reasoned discussions and continuous feedback, we strive to improve both individually and collectively. We foster an environment of mutual trust and respect, empowering effective debate to achieve the best outcomes for our customers and team.
We especially encourage members of underrepresented groups in the tech community to apply and understand that not all successful candidates will meet each requirement listed.
Our interview process is unique to each role, and we value the candidate experience just as much as our customer experience. We hope your conversations with us reflect a thoughtful process that is illuminative, enjoyable, and respectful of your time.
ABOUT THE ROLE
Render's mission is to eliminate the undifferentiated work that goes into building software products by offering an easy-to-use, powerful cloud platform for developer teams of all sizes.
By joining us at an early stage, you will design and build the cloud platform you've always wanted for yourself, and make decisions that will shape our product and company, directly impacting developers around the globe.

- Participate in team planning, roadmapping, and goal-setting.
- Help shape team culture and practices as the company scales.
- Participate in on-call responsibilities with the rest of your team.
WHAT WE'RE LOOKING FOR
- 6+ years of professional experience shipping software. Bonus points if you’ve excelled at a small, high-growth startup.
- Experience collaborating with product and design stakeholders.
- Experience wearing multiple hats and working across the stack, both collaboratively and independently.
- Strong understanding of web frameworks, APIs, and databases, and experience working with multiple programming languages.
- Strong sense of ownership and ability to make pragmatic decisions about your work.
NICE-TO-HAVES:
- Familiarity with modern tooling for software build and deploy processes.
- Familiarity building for product-driven growth and modern enterprise audiences.
- Experience with any of the technologies the Render product runs on: Go, Typescript, React, Kubernetes, Postgres, Terraform, Temporal.
If this role excites you but you don’t meet every single requirement, we’d still love to hear from you—your unique experience might be just what we need.
BENEFITS
- 4 weeks of paid vacation.
- 14 weeks of fully paid parental leave for all parents to bond with a newly born, adopted, or fostered child. We will also work with you to create a supportive plan of return.
- Long-term disability, life insurance, and 401K plans.
- 100% employer-paid medical coverage and 99% employer-paid dental and vision coverage for you and a dependent. FSAs and HSAs are available as well.
- Monthly lifestyle stipend for wellness, mental health and therapy, hobbies, etc.
- Monthly cell phone and internet subsidy.
- Commuter benefits for Renders in the Bay Area, and home office stipends for remote Renders.

Responsibilities
Payment System Development:
Design, develop, and optimize OKX Pay's payment backend systems; build highly available, high-concurrency, scalable payment infrastructure.
Scan-to-Pay Capabilities:
Contribute to core QR/scan-to-pay functionality across the critical path — payment code generation, scan recognition, order creation, payment confirmation, state transitions, timeout handling, risk-control validation, and exception compensation.
Transaction Processing & Fund Flows:
Design and implement secure, stable transaction processing systems covering orders, payments, clearing and settlement, reconciliation, refunds, and callback notifications.
Crypto & Stablecoin Payments:
Build crypto and stablecoin payment capabilities — on-chain transfers, transaction confirmation, address management, asset crediting, and payment-status synchronization — and integrate them with traditional payment experiences.
System Stability & Problem Solving:
Safeguard the stability of core payment flows; diagnose and resolve complex production issues including performance bottlenecks, data-consistency problems, fund-security risks, and abnormal transaction scenarios.
Technical Optimization & Engineering Quality:
Continuously improve system architecture, code quality, monitoring and alerting, exception compensation, and observability to raise the security, reliability, and maintainability of the payment system.
Requirements
Java Backend Experience:
Solid Java development skills, fluent in Spring Boot and mainstream Java backend frameworks, with experience building high-concurrency, high-availability systems.
Payments Domain Experience:
Hands-on experience with payment systems and their core flows — payment orders, payment state machines, callback notifications, reconciliation, refunds, clearing/settlement, and exception compensation.
Scan-to-Pay Experience:
Background in scan-to-pay, acquiring, aggregated payments, merchant payments, wallet payments, or similar products, with familiarity across the full business and technical chain.
System Design:
Strong architecture design ability, capable of designing reliable transaction paths, state-transition mechanisms, and idempotency, retry, and compensation mechanisms.
Data Consistency & Fund-Security Awareness:
Understanding of the importance of data consistency, transaction handling, idempotency, deduplication, concurrency protection, risk-control validation, and fund security in payment systems.
Crypto / Stablecoin Payment Understanding:
Familiarity with the fundamentals of crypto and stablecoin payments and on-chain asset movement, including on-chain transfers, transaction confirmation, address systems, Gas, and crediting confirmation.
Problem-Solving:
Able to independently troubleshoot complex production issues, with strong log analysis, tracing, performance-optimization, and recovery skills.
Ownership & Execution:
Strong ownership; able to drive problems to resolution and ship projects in a fast-changing environment.
Nice-to-Haves
Stablecoin Payment Experience:
Project experience with USDT, USDC, or other stablecoin payments, collection, settlement, crediting, or on-chain confirmation.
Scan-to-Pay / Acquiring Experience:
QR payments, merchant acquiring, aggregated payments, payment gateways, cross-border payments, or offline payment scenarios.
Account & Ledger Systems:
Experience with payment accounts, fund accounts, merchant accounts, ledger systems, clearing/settlement systems, or reconciliation systems.
Blockchain Fundamentals:
Familiarity with the transaction mechanisms, address models, and asset-transfer flows of EVM, Tron, Solana, or other mainstream chains.
Risk & Compliance Awareness:
Understanding of payment risk control, anti-fraud, limits, allow/deny lists, KYC/KYT, and AML mechanisms.
High-Concurrency Transaction Systems:
Experience building high-concurrency order systems, trading systems, payment gateways, acquiring systems, or finance-grade core systems.
Who You Are
A solid Java backend engineer with deep understanding of payment systems, especially scan-to-pay, acquiring, merchant payments, or wallet payments.
You care not only about shipping features but also about fund security, system stability, exception compensation, reconciliation consistency, and the user's payment experience.
You don't need to be a senior blockchain expert, but you have a basic grasp of crypto and stablecoin payments and are eager to explore new payment models that combine traditional payment experiences with on-chain assets.
Perks & Benefits
Competitive total compensation
Comprehensive insurance coverage for employees and their dependants
More that we love to tell you along the process!
