Why this role matters:
The Mechanical AIT Engineer transforms satellite designs into reliable, flight-ready hardware. You are the technical authority for mechanical and composite hardware in Athens: how satellites are assembled and aligned, what proves they will survive launch, and what evidence exists that every build was done correctly.
You define the AIT processes, tooling and ground support equipment the facilities need as they grow from subassembly production towards full satellite integration. You make sure the design, the processes and the tooling can carry production to high throughput, and you feed what you learn on the floor back into design, so that each build is more manufacturable, more testable and more reliable than the last.

About Anthropic
Anthropic’s mission is to create reliable, interpretable, and steerable AI systems. We want AI to be safe and beneficial for our users and for society as a whole. Our team is a quickly growing group of committed researchers, engineers, policy experts, and business leaders working together to build beneficial AI systems.
About the role
Training and serving frontier AI models requires compute infrastructure at a scale and density that pushes past what conventional data center designs were built to handle. Anthropic’s Data Center team is responsible for delivering that physical infrastructure — partnering with build partners, equipment manufacturers, and vendors to stand up facilities that can reliably cool some of the largest accelerator clusters in the industry.
As a Senior Data Center Mechanical Engineer based in the United States, you’ll lead the design direction and technical oversight of building mechanical systems — cooling, chilled-water distribution, liquid cooling, plumbing, and fire protection — across our rapidly expanding U.S. portfolio. This is a senior individual contributor role focused on driving and reviewing mechanical design from concept through detailed design and construction documentation produced by external engineering firms and development partners, ensuring every facility meets Anthropic’s standards for reliability, efficiency, and scalability. You’ll own the mechanical design direction from Basis of Design through construction and commissioning, serving as the primary technical interface between Anthropic’s internal teams and our external engineering and development partners.
A central part of this role is speed-to-capacity through prefabrication and modular construction — modular cooling skids, prefabricated piping assemblies, and design for offsite manufacture that compress schedules and reduce onsite labor. You’ll bring deep familiarity with U.S. mechanical, plumbing, and fire codes and the local regulatory environment, and ensure the cooling architecture keeps pace with rapidly increasing rack densities and the shift toward direct-to-chip liquid cooling. Strong candidates will bring deep mission-critical mechanical design experience and the judgment to make sound trade-offs when the standard playbook doesn’t apply.
Responsibilities
Design direction & review
Drive mechanical design concepts for data center cooling plants, chilled-water distribution, liquid cooling (direct-to-chip and CDUs), plumbing, and fire protection systems.
Review and direct design drawings, specifications, and construction documentation produced by external engineering firms, ensuring alignment with Anthropic’s Basis of Design and owner requirements.
Evaluate design submittals, shop drawings, and equipment selections; respond to RFIs with clear technical direction.
Identify design conflicts and drive resolution across mechanical, electrical, and controls disciplines.
Maintain and evolve Anthropic’s internal mechanical design standards and reference configurations.
Prefabrication & modular delivery
Drive Anthropic’s prefabricated and modular mechanical strategy — modular cooling skids, prefabricated piping and pump assemblies, and design for offsite manufacture and onsite assembly — to accelerate deployment and reduce onsite labor.
Drive standardization of modular mechanical designs across sites while preserving flexibility for site-specific constraints and evolving hardware generations.
External partner & vendor coordination
Serve as the primary mechanical engineering point of contact for external developers, design engineers, and construction partners across the U.S. portfolio.
Develop scopes of work, equipment specifications, and bid packages for mechanical infrastructure.
Perform technical due diligence on third-party and colocation facilities, evaluating mechanical designs against program requirements and redundancy targets.
Coordinate with equipment vendors and manufacturers on cooling system procurement, including chillers, CDUs, pumps, and piping assemblies, and partner with supply chain to mitigate lead-time and single-source risk.
Construction & commissioning
Monitor mechanical system installation for compliance with design intent, applicable U.S. codes and standards, and industry best practice.
Conduct site visits to review progress, resolve field issues, and validate construction quality; travel to sites across the region as needed.
Support testing and commissioning of mechanical systems; analyze data and troubleshoot issues against design intent.
You may be a good fit if you
Have 10+ years of experience designing building mechanical systems for data centers or mission-critical facilities, across the project lifecycle from concept design through construction, commissioning, and handover.
Have deep familiarity with U.S. mechanical, plumbing, and fire codes and standards — including the International Mechanical Code (IMC), International Plumbing Code (IPC), International Energy Conservation Code (IECC), International Building Code (IBC), NFPA 13 (automatic sprinkler systems), ASME B31 piping codes, and applicable state and local amendments, alongside ASHRAE guidance (incl. TC 9.9).
Have strong knowledge of chilled-water systems, air-cooled cooling plants, liquid cooling (direct-to-chip and CDUs), and redundant piping configurations.
Have hands-on experience with prefabricated and modular mechanical infrastructure — modular cooling skids, prefabricated piping assemblies, and design for offsite manufacture.
Have experience driving and reviewing mechanical design work produced by external engineering consultants, and are proficient reading and marking up construction drawings, P&IDs, and single-line diagrams.
Hold a bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering; a Professional Engineer (PE) license (or eligibility) is valued but not required.
Communicate clearly and can drive technical decisions across internal teams and external partners, and are results-oriented with a bias toward practical solutions.
Are able to travel up to ~30% to data center sites across the region.
Strong candidates may also have
15+ years of experience designing building mechanical systems for data centers or mission-critical facilities.
Direct project experience delivering data centers in multiple U.S. markets (e.g., Virginia, Ohio, Texas, Arizona, Oregon).
Experience with thermal-hydraulic modeling software (AFT Fathom, Cadence 6SigmaET, ANSYS, or similar), CFD modeling, and energy analysis.
Familiarity with controls/BAS systems and sequences of operation for cooling plants.
Experience preparing SOWs, facility audits, and TCO analyses.
A track record building modular prefabricated products in mechanical or electrical areas of the data center, and driving designs toward offsite manufacturing.
Proficiency with Revit MEP or AutoCAD MEP.

How we're different
We believe that the highest-impact AI research will be big science. At Anthropic we work as a single cohesive team on just a few large-scale research efforts. And we value impact — advancing our long-term goals of steerable, trustworthy AI — rather than work on smaller and more specific puzzles. We view AI research as an empirical science, which has as much in common with physics and biology as with traditional efforts in computer science. We're an extremely collaborative group, and we host frequent research discussions to ensure that we are pursuing the highest-impact work at any given time. As such, we greatly value communication skills.
The easiest way to understand our research directions is to read our recent research. This research continues many of the directions our team worked on prior to Anthropic, including: GPT-3, Circuit-Based Interpretability, Multimodal Neurons, Scaling Laws, AI & Compute, Concrete Problems in AI Safety, and Learning from Human Preferences.
Come work with us!
Anthropic is a public benefit corporation headquartered in San Francisco. We offer competitive compensation and benefits, optional equity donation matching, generous vacation and parental leave, flexible working hours, and a lovely office space in which to collaborate with colleagues.

Anthropic trains and serves frontier AI models on some of the largest accelerator fleets in the world, and we're now building the custom hardware systems that fleet will run on — from the package boundary out through boards, racks, interconnect, power, cooling, and the datacenter interface.
We're looking for a Technical Program Manager to own execution of these hardware systems from concept through production deployment. You'll drive the program that turns architecture and specs into boards and racks that ship — managing ODMs, CMs, and component vendors on one side, and coordinating silicon, firmware, infrastructure software, supply chain, and datacenter teams on the other.
This is a role on a new hardware team. You'll build the program cadence, review structure, and NPI process this team runs on. We need someone who has shipped hardware at scale, has a realistic view of ODM/CM schedules and where they break, and is comfortable owning consequential program calls without a large organization behind them.
Key responsibilities
Own the integrated hardware systems program plan across board, chassis, rack, and interconnect — from requirements through EVT/DVT/PVT, qualification, and production ramp — and be the source of truth on schedule, risk, and readiness.
Drive execution with ODMs, contract manufacturers, and component/optics vendors: SOWs, build schedules, deliverable tracking, factory readiness, and escalation when they slip.
Stand up and run the NPI cadence — build matrix, engineering reviews, DFx, issue triage, exit criteria — and keep it lightweight enough that a small, senior team actually uses it.
Drive the bring-up and validation program for new platforms: lab and pilot-rack logistics, firmware/BMC/diagnostics coordination, test coverage, and the reliability and telemetry targets a platform has to hit before it enters the fleet.
Own the interfaces that make or break a hardware program: silicon (samples, package, power/thermal envelopes), datacenter (power, cooling, rack integration, deployment windows), infrastructure software (management plane, provisioning, telemetry), and supply chain (long-lead components, second-sourcing, allocation).
Run partner and technology evaluations as a program — candidate ODMs, reference platforms, connector/optics/memory options — and land build / buy / co-design recommendations with the architecture team.
Own program communication upward and outward — for an audience that ranges from architects to executives.
Develop and share AI-assisted approaches to hardware program management — issue-tracker synthesis, build-readiness checking, spec/BOM consistency, ODM-report digestion.
Minimum qualifications
8+ years in hardware systems / NPI program management for compute, networking, storage, or accelerator platforms.
Direct ownership of at least one platform from concept through volume production — you can walk through its EVT/DVT/PVT arc, what broke, and how you recovered.
Working technical fluency across the hardware stack — power delivery, thermal, mechanical, high-speed interconnect, board design, system management — sufficient to interrogate status and push back credibly on architects and vendors.
Experience managing ODMs/CMs and component vendors, including SOW negotiation, build tracking, quality escapes, and escalation.
Track record of standing up program mechanisms on a new or early-stage hardware effort, not just operating inside a mature PLC.
Strong written communication — plans, reviews, and exec updates that many teams depend on.
Comfort operating with high autonomy and limited process in a fast-moving, ambiguous environment.
Preferred qualifications
Experience with AI/ML accelerator systems (GPU, TPU, custom ASIC), HPC, or hyperscale datacenter platforms and their scale-up / scale-out fabrics.
Experience taking a first-generation, custom-silicon-based system from bring-up through fleet deployment.
Experience with liquid-cooled and/or high-density rack architectures, rack level high power distribution, or optical interconnect programs.
Familiarity with the chip-package-system interface and coordinating tightly with a silicon team.
Experience with datacenter integration, deployment, and fleet-scale reliability/RAS programs.
Practical experience using AI tools in your own workflow, and clear ideas about where they help and where they don't.
BS/MS in EE, CE, ME, or a related field, or equivalent experience.

Anthropic trains and serves frontier AI models on some of the largest and most diverse accelerator fleets in the world, and the hardware those models run on is one of the most direct levers we have on capability, cost, and reliability. Our Hardware Systems team owns the system-level architecture of that compute — from the package boundary out through boards, racks, interconnect, power, cooling, and the datacenter interface.
We're hiring senior hardware systems architects and technical leads who can work broadly across the hardware stack and go deep where it's needed, and who have the judgment to make and own directional calls — what to build, what to buy, what to co-design with a partner. You'll set architecture, write the specs that partners and internal teams build against, and own the validation and qualification strategy that proves the result.
The skillsets we need span power, cooling, mechanical, interconnect, signal integrity, data and control plane, system management, reliability and serviceability — applied across networking, compute, storage, and accelerator systems.
You'll work closely with our ML performance, infrastructure software, supply chain, and datacenter teams, and directly with hardware vendors and partners across the stack. And because this is Anthropic, you'll have Claude as a genuine collaborator — we expect this team to push on what AI-assisted hardware design and review can look like.
Key responsibilities
Own system path-finding and architecture for your domain across the breadth of compute Anthropic deploys — from concept and requirements through spec, design review, and deployment — and act as a reviewer and thought partner across the others.
Write and own high-level requirements and specifications — system, board, interface, rack — that partners and internal teams build against.
Review partner and vendor designs against our requirements, make the build / buy / co-design calls with supply chain and partnership teams, and surface misalignment or schedule risk early enough to act on it.
Drive the interconnect and networking architecture that ties our systems together — scale-up and scale-out fabrics, NICs and switches, optics, and topology.
Drive board-, chassis-, and system-level architecture with our partners — major component placement, PCB architecture, connector and cable design, and power and thermal budgeting — at the chassis, rack, and data-hall level.
Develop performance simulations, hardware models, and "what-if" scenarios to evaluate and choose between candidate hardware architectures.
Define validation, bring-up, and qualification strategy for new platforms — including the telemetry and reliability targets they need to hit in the fleet — and track the technology roadmaps and vendor landscape that shape what we deploy in the short and long term.
Partner with ML performance and infrastructure software teams so hardware decisions land well for the workloads that actually run on them.
Help shape how hardware engineering operates at Anthropic — develop and apply AI-assisted approaches to design, spec review, and validation; establish review forums, spec standards, and partner engagement.
Minimum qualifications
Deep, hands-on expertise in at least one core hardware-systems domain (e.g., interconnect, power, thermal) for large-scale compute or networking systems.
Experience owning hardware system architecture at scale — machine, rack, row, and cluster — and authoring specifications and requirements.
Experience taking hardware from architecture through bring-up and high-volume production deployment.
Experience working with external hardware vendors and partners — reviewing their designs and holding them to a specification.
Ability to reason about trade-offs across adjacent hardware domains (e.g., interconnect ↔ power ↔ thermal ↔ mechanical) rather than within a single one.
Track record of technical leadership — owning directional decisions and their consequences, and driving alignment across teams and partners.
Comfort operating with high autonomy and limited process in a fast-moving, ambiguous environment.
Strong written communication — you'll write specs and reviews that many teams depend on.
Preferred qualifications
8+ years in hardware systems architecture or engineering for hyperscale, HPC, AI/ML, or high-end networking platforms.
Experience with AI accelerator systems (GPU, TPU, or other custom ASIC platforms) and their scale-up / scale-out fabrics.
Familiarity with the chip-package-system interface and co-design.
Experience establishing a new function, program, or engineering practice.
Comfort working with — and curiosity about pushing — AI tools as part of an engineering workflow.
Degree in EE, CE, ME, CS, or a related field, or equivalent experience.
Depth in one or more of:
High-speed SerDes, PCIe/CXL, Ethernet/InfiniBand, and optical interconnect.
BMC and platform firmware, hardware root of trust, and secure boot.
48V/HVDC power delivery and direct liquid cooling.
Fleet-scale reliability engineering and RAS architecture.
Signal and power integrity.
Representative projects
Define the scale-up and scale-out interconnect architecture for a next-generation training platform, from link budget and topology through switch / NIC / optics selection and the bring-up and validation plan.
Architect the management and control plane for a new hardware system: BMC and host control, power / reset sequencing, secure boot and attestation, and the telemetry surface the fleet needs.
Own the rack-level power and thermal architecture for a liquid-cooled accelerator rack, and the interface spec between that rack and the datacenter that hosts it.
Build the reliability model and RAS strategy for a multi-thousand-node fleet — failure budgets, derating policy, telemetry requirements, and serviceability targets — and drive the design changes that hit them.
Run the technical evaluation of a partner's proposed system design against our requirements, write up where it falls short, and drive the changes end to end.
Prototype an AI-assisted workflow for partner design review and spec consistency checking, and put it to work on a live platform.
