With 20 offices across six continents and London as our HQ, we’re shaping the future of fintech – and we’re just getting started.
As a Staff Engineer (Payment Processing) at Checkout.com http://Checkout.com, you will set the technical direction for our Gateway, Routing and Payout platforms. Every payment and payout we process passes through these systems, from the merchant's API request to the routing decision that sends it to the right acquirer, payment method or payout rail. Correctness matters on every transaction, and small changes in availability, latency or routing quality show up directly in our merchants' approval rates and revenue.
This is a role for engineers who are energised by scale and by the hard trade-offs that come with it: latency budgets on the authorisation path, failure domains and blast radius, consistency and idempotency across regions, and the operational reality of running critical infrastructure around the clock.
You will operate as a force multiplier across multiple teams - shaping architecture, raising the engineering bar, and turning ambiguous, business-critical problems into designs that can be delivered incrementally. We're looking for individuals with deep technical judgement, strong ownership, and a pragmatic approach to breaking big problems into smaller iterations that deliver value continuously.
How you'll make an impact
- Own the architecture of high-throughput, low-latency distributed systems, defining the service boundaries, data models and integration patterns that let them scale by an order of magnitude
- Design for resilience from first principles - redundancy, graceful degradation, backpressure, idempotency and recovery - so that partial failures never become customer-facing outages
- Set and defend the non-functional requirements that matter: availability targets, latency percentiles, throughput ceilings, data durability and recovery objectives
- Lead the hardest technical decisions end to end, from problem framing and design review through to production rollout, migration and decommissioning of what came before
- Drive operational excellence by improving observability, alerting, capacity planning, load and chaos testing, and incident response, and by closing the loop on the root causes you find
- Raise the engineering bar across teams through design reviews, code review, pairing and mentorship, growing the senior engineers around you
- Partner with product, platform and other engineering teams to sequence delivery, remove blockers and keep multi-team programmes aligned on a single technical direction
- Make pragmatic build-versus-buy and refactor-versus-rewrite calls, and communicate the reasoning and trade-offs clearly to both engineers and senior leadership
Experience and qualifications
- Significant experience building and operating distributed backend systems in production, with a track record of technical leadership across multiple teams
- Demonstrable experience designing for high throughput and low latency, and a strong intuition for where systems break under load
- Deep understanding of resilience patterns in distributed systems: idempotency, retries and backoff, circuit breaking, queueing and backpressure, consistency and failure modes
- Strong proficiency in either .NET or Java, and the ability to write clear, production-ready code that others can maintain
- Experience with event-driven and streaming architectures, and with relational and non-relational data stores at scale
- Hands-on experience with cloud-based application development (we use AWS & Azure), containers, orchestration and infrastructure as code
- Experience owning production systems on call, with a strong sense of ownership for observability, monitoring and incident response
- Experience leading complex migrations or re-architectures of live, business-critical systems with no loss of availability or data integrity
- Excellent communication skills, able to influence without authority, write clear design documents, and express technical trade-offs to engineering and non-technical audiences alike
Nice-to-haves
- Experience in payments, financial services or another domain with strict correctness, auditability or regulatory requirements
- Experience with multi-region or active-active architectures, including data replication and failover strategies
- A history of mentoring engineers into senior and staff-level roles

About Anthropic
Anthropic’s mission is to create reliable, interpretable, and steerable AI systems. We want AI to be safe and beneficial for our users and for society as a whole. Our team is a quickly growing group of committed researchers, engineers, policy experts, and business leaders working together to build beneficial AI systems.
We are hiring a Workplace Coordinator to join Anthropic as the sole workplace team member in our Zurich office. You will own everything that makes the office run and everything that makes it a place people want to be — from building operations and vendor management to employee experience, events, and food and beverage programming. If you thrive as the person everyone counts on and love wearing many hats, this role is for you. We have a strong in-person presence at Anthropic, and we care deeply that every office is a place where employees feel welcome, supported, and set up to do their best work.
Responsibilities
Office Operations & Building Management
Coordinate with and manage vendors who handle day-to-day operations and maintenance of the Zurich office, including janitorial services, deliveries, office supplies, and building repairs
Address workplace issues promptly (elevator down, restroom flood, HVAC failure, refrigerator not cooling, etc.), engaging the right vendor and keeping colleagues informed until the issue is resolved
Conduct minor repairs and hands-on maintenance tasks; coordinate vendors for more complex work
Support HVAC, preventive maintenance schedules, and building system upkeep
Manage workstation setups for new hires and team changes, including monitors, monitor arms, and ergonomic equipment
Support office moves, restacks, furniture reconfigurations, and space planning as the team grows
Partner with Security on emergency response support and help maintain compliance with local safety codes, permits, and inspections
Employee Experience & Hospitality
Own the day-to-day employee experience for the Zurich office — you are the face of the office and the first point of contact for how things work
Ensure new hires have a seamless first-day experience: desk ready, equipment set up, office tour, and a warm welcome
Manage food and beverage programming, including snacks, coffee, catering for meetings, and team meals, keeping offerings fresh and responsive to employee preferences
Monitor and proactively improve the in-office experience through regular walkthroughs, employee feedback, and observation — fix what is not working before it becomes a ticket
Respond to requests in our internal ticketing system within SLAs, providing a high level of service through clear, timely, and empathetic communication
Develop and preserve office culture, norms, and the hospitality standard that makes Zurich feel like an Anthropic office
Events & Programming
Plan and execute local office events: team gatherings, holiday celebrations, milestone moments, happy hours, and visiting-executive hospitality
Coordinate with the broader Workplace, People, and Experience teams on company-wide events that have a Zurich component (All-Hands watch parties, offsites, team-building activities)
Own event logistics end-to-end: space setup, catering, A/V, vendor coordination, budget tracking, and post-event teardown
Support visiting teams and executives with workspace setup, local recommendations, and logistics
Bring a hospitality mindset to every event and meeting setup, ensuring the space is welcoming and well-prepared
Cross-Functional Coordination & Process
Partner closely with People Operations, Security, the global Workplace team, IT/AV and local vendors to keep the office running smoothly
Help maintain and improve Standard Operating Procedures so that recurring processes scale as the office and team grow
Manage multiple competing priorities with clear judgment on what matters most
Surface issues, risks, and facility needs to the global Workplace team early and clearly
Minimum Qualifications
Have 5+ years of experience in workplace coordination, office management, hospitality, or building operations
Have working knowledge of building systems like HVAC, elevators, plumbing, and lighting, and can supervise maintenance, repairs, and services
Bring a service-minded, solutions-oriented approach and genuinely enjoy being the person who makes things work
Have experience managing food and beverage service, catering, or hospitality programming in an office setting
Are comfortable independently managing an office — you have been the sole workplace person at a site before, or are ready to be
Enjoy rolling up your sleeves, with no task too big or too small
Have excellent organizational and communication skills, and can manage many competing priorities
Preferred Qualifications
Have managed workplace projects or programs (HVAC, preventive maintenance, office moves, events) in a multi-building or high-growth environment
Have planned and executed office events, from small team gatherings to larger company celebrations
Have experience at a high-growth technology company where processes are being built in real time
Be interested in artificial intelligence and care that it is developed safely and beneficially
Have experience managing permit, license, and inspection requirements
Logistics
Minimum education:
Bachelor’s degree or an equivalent combination of education, training, and/or experience
Required field of study:
A field relevant to the role as demonstrated through coursework, training, or professional experience
Minimum years of experience:
Years of experience required will correlate with the internal job level requirements for the position
Location-based hybrid policy:
Currently, we expect all staff to be in one of our offices at least 25% of the time. However, some roles may require more time in our offices.
Visa sponsorship:
We do sponsor visas! However, we aren't able to successfully sponsor visas for every role and every candidate. But if we make you an offer, we will make every reasonable effort to get you a visa, and we retain an immigration lawyer to help with this.
We encourage you to apply even if you do not believe you meet every single qualification.
Not all strong candidates will meet every single qualification as listed. Research shows that people who identify as being from underrepresented groups are more prone to experiencing imposter syndrome and doubting the strength of their candidacy, so we urge you not to exclude yourself prematurely and to submit an application if you're interested in this work. We think AI systems like the ones we're building have enormous social and ethical implications. We think this makes representation even more important, and we strive to include a range of diverse perspectives on our team.
Your safety matters to us.
To protect yourself from potential scams, remember that Anthropic recruiters only contact you from @anthropic.com email addresses. In some cases, we may partner with vetted recruiting agencies who will identify themselves as working on behalf of Anthropic. Be cautious of emails from other domains. Legitimate Anthropic recruiters will never ask for money, fees, or banking information before your first day. If you're ever unsure about a communication, don't click any links—visit

directly for confirmed position openings.
How we're different
We believe that the highest-impact AI research will be big science. At Anthropic we work as a single cohesive team on just a few large-scale research efforts. And we value impact — advancing our long-term goals of steerable, trustworthy AI — rather than work on smaller and more specific puzzles. We view AI research as an empirical science, which has as much in common with physics and biology as with traditional efforts in computer science. We're an extremely collaborative group, and we host frequent research discussions to ensure that we are pursuing the highest-impact work at any given time. As such, we greatly value communication skills.
The easiest way to understand our research directions is to read our recent research. This research continues many of the directions our team worked on prior to Anthropic, including: GPT-3, Circuit-Based Interpretability, Multimodal Neurons, Scaling Laws, AI & Compute, Concrete Problems in AI Safety, and Learning from Human Preferences.
Come work with us!
Anthropic is a public benefit corporation headquartered in San Francisco. We offer competitive compensation and benefits, optional equity donation matching, generous vacation and parental leave, flexible working hours, and a lovely office space in which to collaborate with colleagues.

WHAT WE’RE LOOKING FOR
- Significant experience in Solutions Engineering, Sales Engineering, Solutions Architecture, Implementation Engineering, Technical Account Management, or a related customer-facing technical leadership role.
- Experience working with large enterprise or strategic accounts in payments, fintech, SaaS, e-commerce, or another complex technology environment.
- Deep understanding of payments architecture, API-based integrations, distributed systems, security considerations, and enterprise implementation patterns.
- Proven ability to lead complex technical sales cycles involving multiple stakeholders, competing priorities, ambiguous requirements, and material commercial value.
- Executive presence and the ability to communicate credibly with C-level leaders, senior architects, developers, product teams, commercial leaders, and delivery partners.
- Strong commercial judgment, strategic thinking, and ability to connect technical recommendations to customer outcomes and business value.
- Demonstrated ability to influence without authority and create alignment across internal teams and customer organizations.
- Excellent written and verbal communication, with the ability to simplify complex subjects without losing important technical nuance.
- Comfortable operating hands-on when needed, including reviewing API behavior, logs, architecture diagrams, technical documentation, and proof-of-concept results.
NICE TO HAVE
- Deep experience with payment performance, payment methods, fraud and risk, 3DS, network tokenization, wallets, or other modern payment capabilities.
- Experience leading enterprise architecture workshops, executive briefings, technical due diligence, or complex transformation programs.
- Experience with JavaScript, React, Java, .NET, Python, Node.js, Go, C#, or another relevant development ecosystem.
- Previous experience as an engineer, developer, product leader, enterprise architect, or senior technical consultant.
- Familiarity with payments standards, regulations, schemes, and the operational realities of global commerce.
