GiveWell’s mission is to help people in need as much as we can by researching the most cost‑effective ways to save and improve lives, sharing our work openly, and directing donations to the programs we believe will do the most good. Our work, which focuses on global health and well-being, is funded by tens of thousands of donors who rely on our research to inform their giving. We’ve grown from directing $1.5 million in 2010 to directing more than $400 million in 2025. We anticipate our total grantmaking is likely to approach or even exceed $1 billion this year, and we are working toward a future that could be several times that scale. Through years of deliberate groundwork, we’ve been growing our research capacity and scope in order to direct substantially more funding to the most impactful opportunities we can find.
Summary
GiveWell is seeking a Senior New Areas Researcher to help direct tens of millions of dollars annually to the most cost-effective interventions we can find. You will have an outsized influence on our funding decisions and help us save and improve lives on a global scale.
The New Areas team grantmaking is divided into three workstreams: i) our core cause areas: areas for which we devote a significant amount of time developing subject-matter specific expertise and networks, a thorough research agenda, and a large portfolio of grants (e.g., family planning, maternal and newborn health, tuberculosis and HIV); ii) our emerging cause areas: a broader set of cause areas for which the New Areas team is starting to build its expertise, networks and research agenda, and is making some initial grants (e.g., medical oxygen, applications of AI to global health); and iii) our incubators: supporting the
Clinton Health Access Initiative’s Incubator
and
Evidence Action’s Accelerator
to identify potentially cost-effective interventions and create programs that we would be excited to support in the future.
As a Senior New Areas Researcher, you'll create and lead ambitious research agendas related to our portfolios of work and answer complex questions that will inform GiveWell's grantmaking decisions. The researchers on our team combine rigorous evidence review, cost-effectiveness modeling, and thoughtful judgment.
We're open to a wide variety of professional development pathways depending on your preferences and our needs.
The role
You will be joining a small grantmaking team to contribute to our ambitious research agenda on new areas. You'll sift through the countless questions we could try to answer, and hone in on those that matter most. You'll also communicate externally about your work and mentor and advise other researchers on the team.
You will shape a research agenda that brings rigor and creativity to the thorniest questions the GiveWell new areas team faces. Your work will combine empirical evidence review and critical synthesis, cost-effectiveness modeling, discussions with subject matter experts, understanding of the broader context, and your own judgment.
What you might work on in your first year:
Tackle thorny research questions in our existing portfolios.
For example: to what extent could programs which distribute oral rehydration solution to reduce diarrheal deaths inadvertently induce exclusively breastfed children to consume poor quality water? How can we estimate the risk of reinfection after a child has completed a course of tuberculosis preventive treatment? How can we account for these concerns in our cost-effectiveness estimates?
Design and oversee learning grants.
You'll help design impact evaluations for new and existing programs, and supervise researchers executing that work — from scoping the research question through to interpreting results and integrating them into our models.
Build our evidence base in new programmatic areas.
This includes synthesising existing research, commissioning new reviews, and in some cases funding primary data collection — with the goal of determining whether a new intervention meets GiveWell's cost-effectiveness bar and is ready for major grantmaking.
Provide research support to grantmakers.
You'll ensure our cost-effectiveness models reflect our best current understanding of the programs we fund — stress-testing assumptions, incorporating new data, and flagging where uncertainty is high enough to warrant further investigation.
The Senior New Areas Researcher will help shape a major annual grantmaking portfolio, own grant investigations end-to-end (from research question through grant recommendation), and represent GiveWell to external counterparts. You'll have significant latitude to propose new areas of work.
Team structure
Our research department has ~70 people, and is currently organized into eight teams:
Five of the teams (Livelihoods, Malaria, Nutrition, Vaccination, and Water) focus on specific areas of grantmaking.
The New Areas team focuses on interventions in domains that are new to GiveWell.
The Cross-Cutting team focuses on methodological issues, research quality, and other big-picture concerns that cut across all of our research work.
The Commons team provides generalized research support to each of the other teams, including landscaping research, vetting, and publishing.
Team values
We think our research team has unique qualities:
We care deeply and centrally about finding and sharing truth.
Truth-seeking is one of our
core values
. We post
our mistakes
and we prize our team members who keep our culture of free-flowing feedback strong.
We are independent.
We focus 100% on finding the most cost-effective opportunities to save and improve lives. Our researchers assist in communicating our research findings to the public and our donors, and on occasion we provide tailored advice to ultra-high-net-worth donors who want to rely on our expertise to direct their giving—but we never ask our researchers to trade off against honesty, or to hide their real beliefs.
We don’t waste time.
Once it’s clear that a particular research question is unlikely to change our bottom-line funding recommendation, we drop it as quickly as possible. We encourage our research staff to constantly re-evaluate their portfolios and only work on the highest-priority questions.
Lean research team = huge personal impact.
In 2026,
our research team of ~80 people is directing close to 1 billion dollars and we expect grantmaking dollars per research team member to increase in the future.
We work well together.
Our research team is lean because we’re able to attract top-tier people, all of whom complete skills-based assessments before joining our staff. We maintain a high-performing, collegial culture and pay our staff accordingly.
About you
We expect the Senior New Areas Researcher to have
A quantitatively oriented advanced degree (e.g., in epidemiology, public health, economics, or a related field).
Substantial professional experience in global health, or an adjacent field (broadly defined). This could include direct experience with program design, monitoring, or evaluation; epidemiology; cost-effectiveness modelling of health interventions; or work in program implementation or funding at a bilateral, multilateral, or NGO. We're especially interested in candidates who enjoy being generalists: you are able to get up to speed quickly on new topics and you feel comfortable task-switching.
We expect that people with the soft qualities below will be the most successful and happy on our team. This isn’t a full list, but hopefully it conveys the gist of our team’s professional personality:
GiveWell’s mission and methods are personally energizing—you like our approach to research and you find personal meaning in our story of impact.
You’re abnormally curious—you ask lots of questions, and you’re willing to interrogate others’ work. Your curiosity also extends to your own work—you aren’t defensive when your research comes under scrutiny.
You routinely think about and surface the value judgments, background knowledge, and strategic commitments that undergird your work. You understand the potential effects of mistaken mental models, so you strive to improve yours and your team’s.
You dislike it when people express strong confidence in views that don’t seem to rely on commensurate evidence. You carefully and legibly communicate about your confidence levels.
You appreciate the value of an excellent reputation and strong relationships. You can moderate your directness and intensity when you’re communicating with external folks.
You love a
gnarly problem
. You figure out the most important questions to answer, go deep on the details where they matter (and move on where they don’t), and reassess your mental models based on what you’ve learned.
You constantly assess whether you and the team are working on the most important things.
If you’re interested in working on GiveWell’s research team but don’t have new areas expertise, consider applying to our generalist
Senior Researcher
role, or our Researcher role if you have limited post-graduation experience.
The details
Compensation:
We set salaries using a location-based tier system. Our pay for this role:
NYC or the San Francisco Bay Area: $308,000.
All other U.S. locations: $280,000
International: Similar to the “all other U.S. locations” salary, based on historical exchange rates and delivered in locally-denominated currency. We can share a precise figure upon request after the first work trial stage.
Benefits:
Our
benefits
include:
Fully funded health, dental, vision, and life insurance (we cover 100% of premiums within the US for you and any dependents)
Four weeks of paid time off per year, plus a one week organization-wide summer break
16 weeks of fully paid parental leave
Ergonomic home workstations or coworking space memberships
Automatic contribution equal to 5% of your gross salary into your 403(b) retirement plan (for U.S. based staff)
Countries we can hire from:
GiveWell is a remote-first organization. However, for the time being, we can only hire within a select number of countries (US, UK, Canada, Switzerland, and Germany). To be considered for a role with GiveWell, you need to already be based in one of those countries or be willing to move to one of them. We expect to expand the list of locations where we can hire over the course of 2027, and our job descriptions always reflect the current status — so we'd encourage you to check back and apply again for a role you're eligible for.
Visa sponsorship:
The US is the only country where visa sponsorship is possible for a number of roles, and it's assessed on a case by case basis. For all other countries, you need to already have work authorization, we cannot sponsor visas.
Why we work this way:
Focusing on countries where we already have tested onboarding processes lets us move candidates through hiring faster and with fewer surprises. Every additional country brings its own labor laws, EOR requirements, and new processes to work through, which slows things down for hiring teams and new colleagues alike. Concentrating our footprint keeps the experience consistent and supports GiveWell’s wider absorption capacity goals.
Flexibility:
We support and encourage flexible working, including flexible hours, working remotely, and working from the office when you choose. The majority of our staff, including senior management, work flexibly in one way or another.
Travel:
Research team members are sometimes required to attend international site visits and conferences (on average 1-2 per year), with additional travel for those interested in traveling more. Additionally, we strongly encourage staff members to attend quarterly whole-org and department retreats to bond with other team members and complete in-person work. We'll discuss travel obligations in more detail during late stages of the hiring process, and we’ll accommodate staff who have conflicting family or other obligations.
Start date:
We’d like a candidate to start as soon as possible after receiving an offer, but we’ll offer flexibility for candidates whose personal or professional circumstances require them to moderately delay their start date.
Miscellaneous details:
Please apply to only one Senior Researcher posting. If you have deep expertise in this area, this pod-specific role is the right fit. If not, there's no need to apply here — our generalist Senior Researcher role is designed for strong researchers who don't have a single specialization, and you don't need to apply to both. Applying to the generalist role won't put you at any disadvantage!
After application review, our hiring process consists of a short application exercise and up to 15 hours of compensated work trials. You can see more details about our hiring process on our
FAQs page
!
We devote significant staff capacity to initial application review, and we respond to all applications as quickly as possible.
We have a strong preference for full-time applicants, but we’ll consider applications for part-time work. We aren’t interested in reviewing applications for contract or project-based work at this time.
If we settle on an application deadline, we’ll write it in bold here. If you’re on our website job posting and don’t see a deadline, there is no deadline. If you’re reading this on an external job board and don’t see a deadline, you should double-check on our
website
.
You don't need to submit a cover letter—we rely mainly on your resume and answers to the application questions below when we're making early decisions.

Summary
GiveWell is seeking a Senior Nutrition Researcher to help direct tens of millions of dollars annually to the most cost-effective nutrition interventions we can find. You will have an outsized influence on our funding decisions and help us save and improve lives on a global scale.
Our nutrition grantmaking currently spans three sub-portfolios: Vitamin A Supplementation (VAS), iron supplementation (including iron and folic acid supplementation and large-scale food fortification), and treatment of acute malnutrition (CMAM/wasting treatment). In 2025, we directed $95 million to implementers across these areas, operating primarily in Sub-Saharan Africa and South Asia. We are actively deepening our work across all three areas, by scrutinising program coverage and quality, strengthening our cost-effectiveness models, considering different delivery platforms, and expanding our grantmaking to new geographies. We are also exploring opportunities to expand our grantmaking into interventions adjacent to our existing portfolios, as well as approaches and programs that are entirely new to GiveWell, where the evidence and cost-effectiveness case is compelling.
As a Senior Nutrition Researcher, you'll create and lead ambitious research agendas related to our portfolios of work and answer complex questions that will inform GiveWell's grantmaking decisions. The researchers on our team combine rigorous evidence review, cost-effectiveness modeling, and thoughtful judgment.
We're open to a wide variety of professional development pathways depending on your preferences and our needs.

Your work will combine empirical evidence review and critical synthesis, cost-effectiveness modeling, discussions with subject matter experts, understanding of the broader context, and your own judgment.
What you might work on in your first year:
Tackle thorny research questions in our existing portfolios.
For example: how should we calibrate our cost-effectiveness estimates to real-world program performance? How do we better understand coverage gaps and program quality across VAS, iron supplementation, and CMAM programs? How can we strengthen the evidence on the impact of VAS and CMAM in modern contexts, when many key trials are decades old but it would be unethical to withhold standard of care in new trials?
Design and oversee learning grants.
You'll help design impact evaluations for new and existing programs, and supervise researchers executing that work — from scoping the research question through to interpreting results and integrating them into our models.
Build our evidence base in new programmatic areas.

Substantial professional experience relevant to nutrition. We interpret this broadly:
The majority of our work to date has been nutrition programming delivered through the health sector, but we are also interested in other sectors (e.g. agriculture/food systems) that directly affect nutrition outcomes.
Relevant professional experience could include: research roles (e.g. clinical nutrition research; epidemiological or health economics modeling), program roles (e.g. design and implementation, or monitoring and evaluation); funding roles (e.g. grantmaking or impact investing); or other roles in public sector, private sector or non-profit organizations that save and improve lives by addressing malnutrition.

About the Role
ClickHouse is expanding its capabilities in the database systems domain, building next-generation infrastructure that redefines performance, scalability, and developer experience. We’re looking for a Principal Engineer with deep expertise in systems programming and database internals — particularly Postgres — to help us push boundaries in how databases are built and operated at scale.
This is a strategic and high-impact role for an engineer who can work independently across complex technical areas: from storage and performance optimization to distributed coordination and extension development. You’ll shape critical components of our data platform, mentor other engineers, and drive architectural direction for systems that serve massive workloads.
WHAT YOU’LL DO
- Lead design and implementation of advanced systems features across areas like storage, replication, query execution, and performance optimization.
- Contribute to and extend Postgres internals — improving reliability, scalability, and efficiency.
- Prototype and build extensions that expand Postgres’s core capabilities and integrate with cloud-native infrastructure.
- Collaborate with product, infrastructure, and cloud platform teams to deliver robust, developer-friendly experiences.
- Profile and optimize database performance using low-level instrumentation and benchmarking.
- Provide technical leadership, set standards for engineering excellence, and mentor senior engineers.
- Operate with significant autonomy and ownership — driving projects from concept to production.
ABOUT YOU
- 10+ years of experience building systems software in C/C++ or Rust (Go experience a plus).
- Deep knowledge of PostgreSQL or other database engine internals, including storage, execution, or replication subsystems.
- Strong understanding of concurrency, operating systems, and performance engineering.
- Proven ability to ship large-scale systems or core infrastructure features end-to-end.
- Experience contributing to open-source databases or similar complex systems is highly desirable.
- Pragmatic problem solver with a bias for simplicity and measurable impact.

WHO WE ARE
Notion is the collaborative AI workspace where teams and agents think together https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vkpYpWfEK5s. We're building one place where your knowledge, projects, meetings, and AI tools live side by side, so work is faster, clearer, and less fragmented. Millions of individuals, small teams, and large companies run their work on Notion.
Notinos (our employees) are customer zero in bringing this future of work to life. We care about craft, building things that last, and the belief that great work is still fundamentally human. Our goal isn’t to ship the next feature. Each and every team of Notinos is working to set the standard for how humans work together in the AI era. From building a business’s system of record to making and managing AI agents to automating away the busy work, we care deeply about giving our customers more time for their life’s work.
ABOUT THE ROLE
You’ll lead the Mobile AI engineering team, responsible for making Notion AI genuinely useful on phones and tablets. Mobile is where AI needs to work in the moment: when users are capturing ideas, catching up between meetings, asking questions, or trying to move work forward away from their desk.
This role can be based in either San Francisco or New York City. We work from our offices on Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays (our Anchor Days) because we do our best thinking and building together in person. We’re looking for someone who’s excited to work alongside the team during those days.
WHAT YOU'LL ACHIEVE
- Define and evolve the roadmap for Notion’s core mobile AI surfaces, including chat, capture, agent workflows, workspace Q&A, and lightweight creation flows.
- Take new mobile AI ideas from exploration to shipped product, using prototypes, user feedback, and product data to decide what to build next.
- Improve the production quality of mobile AI by identifying instrumentation gaps, reliability risks, and performance bottlenecks before they become user problems.
- Help the team build the right technical foundations for fast iteration across mobile, web, and server boundaries.
SKILLS YOU'LL NEED TO BRING
- Engineering leadership: You have 2+ years managing engineering teams and have helped teams ship high-quality products at scale.
- Hands-on technical leadership: You stay close enough to the code to guide architecture, performance, reliability, and release-quality decisions — and can make small contributions when it helps the team move faster.
- AI product curiosity: You don’t need to be an AI researcher, but you are hands-on with AI tools and curious about how AI changes product development, engineering workflows, and user expectations.
- Execution through ambiguity: You can turn open-ended product bets into clear strategy, sequencing, staffing, and delivery.
- Cross-functional leadership: You work well with across different functions to define problems and ship polished outcomes.
- People leadership: You recruit, coach, and grow engineers, build an inclusive team, and communicate clearly through disagreement.
NICE TO HAVES
- You’ve led teams building AI product experiences involving streaming UX, tool use, voice or multimodal input, evaluation loops, or reliability guardrails.
- You’ve managed teams through 0→1 product development or fast iteration on new product surfaces.
- You have experience with mobile platform concerns such as offline resilience, realtime collaboration, rich-text editing, app performance, or release quality at scale.
- You’ve led teams delivering end-to-end product experiences across mobile, web, and server boundaries.
Notion is committed to providing highly competitive cash compensation, equity, and benefits. The compensation offered for this role will be based on multiple factors such as location, the role’s scope and complexity, and the candidate’s experience and expertise, and may vary from the range provided below. For roles based in New York City, the estimated base salary range for this role is $255k - $290k per year.

A NOTE ON AI
You don’t need deep AI expertise for every role, but we do expect every Notino to be intellectually curious, drawn to tinkering and discovery, and excited to use AI as a real collaborator in their work. For some roles, AI fluency is a core requirement — when that’s the case, we'll say so explicitly in the qualifications. People who thrive here don’t treat AI as a novelty. They use it to think better, and make their work easier for others to build on.
EQUAL OPPORTUNITY & ACCOMMODATIONS
We hire talented people from a wide range of backgrounds. If you’re excited about this role but don’t meet every bullet, we still encourage you to apply. Notion is an equal opportunity employer and does not discriminate on the basis of any legally protected characteristic. Consistent with applicable law, we will consider for employment qualified applicants with arrest and conviction records. Notion provides reasonable accommodations during the application process; if you need one, please let your recruiter know.
Notion is proud to be an equal opportunity employer. We do not discriminate in hiring or any employment decision based on race, color, religion, national origin, age, sex (including pregnancy, childbirth, or related medical conditions), marital status, ancestry, physical or mental disability, genetic information, veteran status, gender identity or expression, sexual orientation, or other applicable legally protected characteristic. About us
OpenZeppelin is the security standard onchain finance is built on. Founded in 2015, our mission is to accelerate the world's transition to an open financial system, built on open standards and secured by rigorous research.
Our open-source Contract Libraries have facilitated over $35 trillion in onchain value and are used by 10 of the top 10 tokenized money market funds and 9 of the top 10 stablecoins by market cap.
We combine AI-native security tooling with deep research and a decade of audit expertise to support leading institutions and crypto-native teams shaping the next generation of digital assets like DTCC, Fidelity, Coinbase, Uniswap, Aave, the Ethereum Foundation, and many more across the full secure development lifecycle.
Please note:
Always refer to OpenZeppelin's official job page for the most accurate information about our open roles, as we have seen multiple third party job sites posting inaccurate information.
The Secure Development team ❤️
OpenZeppelin is the security partner of choice for the most important protocols in Web3. Our Secure Development team sits at the intersection of building and breaking: we design, implement, and harden production-grade libraries and smart contracts for leading projects across EVM, Starknet, Stellar/Soroban, Arbitrum Stylus, Aptos, and beyond, often as an embedded extension of the client's engineering team.
We work the way the rest of the industry will five years from now. Every developer on the team is a fully AI-native engineer, supported by outstanding internal AI tooling built for every phase of secure development. Developers own their workstreams end-to-end — agents amplify their effectiveness, and peers, security researchers, and external auditors provide rigorous review on every piece of work that ships.
The Canton Network engagement
This role joins an active
24-month, multi-million-dollar commitment
to build the open-source DeFi foundations of the world's most institutional blockchain. You'll deliver production-ready Reference Implementations (privacy-preserving DEX, lending, cross-chain stablecoin settlement, confidential auction launchpad, and more), the OpenZeppelin Contracts Library for Daml that Canton developers will import, and Canton standards implementation.
Within this, you will:
Own features of the OpenZeppelin Contracts Library for Daml end to end, from design through audit: examples include a Timelock, access control, vaults, or token standard support.
Design and implement components of the year-1 Reference Implementations: privacy-preserving DEX, lending protocol, cross-chain stablecoin settlement, and confidential auction launchpad.
Implement and shepherd the OZ Daml versions of CIP-56, CIP-86, CIP-103, future CIPs. Coordinate with Digital Asset on spec evolution and with ChainSafe on middleware alignment.
Present and defend your designs in technical discussions with Digital Asset, the Canton Foundation, and other partners.
Work with OpenZeppelin's security researchers on threat models, audit preparation, and fixes for the components you own.
Use AI systems as core daily tools for research, design, implementation, testing, and security work. Build agents, skills, and workflows, and share what works with the team.
Contribute developer-experience and security feedback upstream into the Canton protocol, Splice, the Daml SDK, and the Splice Wallet Kernel.
Research privacy-preserving DeFi, multi-party authorization patterns, and Canton-specific primitives, and share what you learn with the team.
You have
Production Daml fluency.
You understand templates, choices, controllers/observers/signatories, multi-party authorization, sub-transaction views, and propose/accept patterns as first-class primitives. Running an SV, contributing to Splice internals, governance, or Canton Coin tokenomics.
Canton architecture depth.
You understand the network, not only the code: the Global Synchronizer and private synchronizers, what each party and synchronizer sees in a transaction, smart contract upgrades, and the token standards (CIP-56, CIP-112).
3+ years of smart contract development in production.
This includes hands-on work on Canton or another UTXO-based or privacy-preserving architecture (Cardano, Midnight, Zcash, Aleo, Mina, or similar). You can reason about Canton's privacy boundaries the way an EVM developer reasons about storage slots.
Production DeFi experience.
You have shipped DeFi primitives such as AMMs, vaults (ERC-4626 or equivalent), lending protocols, or cross-chain settlement, and you understand the security pitfalls of each. You know the standard EVM patterns (access control, token standards, lending pools, DEXs), because many Canton standards reuse them.
A security-first mindset.
This is non-negotiable. You build secure code by default, you think adversarially about every line you write, and you find vulnerabilities when you review Daml code. We look for a developer with a security mindset, not a security researcher. Published audits, threat models, or disclosures are a plus.
An AI-native workflow.
Claude Code, Cursor, or equivalent is your daily driver. You know agents, harnesses, and skills, not only autocomplete. You hold AI output to the same standard as a colleague's pull request, and you stay accountable for everything you ship.
Fluency in client-facing communication (English)
Autonomy and proactivity.
Nice to have
Cryptography or financial-engineering background.
Privacy-preserving DeFi rewards both.
Institutional finance and compliance design experience.
Credential gates, multi-party attestation, custody flows, capital-markets microstructure, RWA tokenization, settlement.
Experience running an SV
, contributing to Splice internals, governance, or Canton Coin tokenomics.
Cross-chain interoperability exposure.
Production work with at least one major cross-chain messaging protocol (Chainlink CCIP, LayerZero, Wormhole, Axelar, or similar).
Library / SDK API design taste.
You've built reusable, import-first developer libraries, not just applications. You have opinions on extensibility patterns (hooks, modular components, override points) and on what makes an audited primitive
pleasant
to consume.
Experience applying AI to security work.
You've already used AI as a serious instrument in security workflows: audit assistance, vulnerability research, fuzzing, invariant or spec analysis, static-analysis augmentation, or similar.
Hands-on experience with non-EVM ecosystems.
Starknet, Stellar/Soroban, Arbitrum Stylus, Aptos, Move-based chains.
Open-source contributions
to widely-used libraries in the smart-contract or AI-tooling space.

About Anthropic
Anthropic’s mission is to create reliable, interpretable, and steerable AI systems. We want AI to be safe and beneficial for our users and for society as a whole. Our team is a quickly growing group of committed researchers, engineers, policy experts, and business leaders working together to build beneficial AI systems.
About the Role
Anthropic's inference fleet serves Claude to millions of users across our own products and the world's largest cloud platforms. The stack that makes this possible is deep and tightly coupled: accelerator kernels, model servers, distributed routing, autoscaling, capacity management. Every layer affects the others, often in ways that are hard to see in isolation.
The Inference System Dynamics team is responsible for understanding that whole system and holding it to a high bar across four dimensions:
throughput, latency, reliability, and correctness
. We measure how the fleet performs against its theoretical performance frontier, run cross-layer investigations to explain the gaps, and own the correctness checks that make sure Claude's outputs are right, not just fast, across hardware platforms and serving configurations. We don't own the individual components. We instrument and model them, find the highest-leverage opportunities across them, and partner with the owning teams to land the wins.
You'll work across all four areas. One week that might mean tracing a tail-latency regression from request timing down through routing and batching into a kernel overhead; the next it might mean tightening a correctness eval so it catches an output regression introduced by a quantization change. We're looking for performance engineers who treat correctness as part of performance.
Key Responsibilities
Run cross-layer performance investigations across throughput, latency, and reliability, sizing the gap between actual fleet performance and theoretical rooflines, identifying root causes, and quantifying the value of closing them
Own and improve the correctness evaluation pipeline that validates model output quality across hardware platforms, numerics, and serving configurations, and lead the investigation when it catches a regression
Build the observability, dashboards, and modeling tools that make throughput, latency, cost, reliability, correctness, and their interactions legible across the stack
Partner with kernel, serving, routing, autoscaling, and capacity teams to prioritize and land the highest-impact optimizations your analysis surfaces
Ruthlessly stack-rank a large surface area of opportunities by impact and effort, and say no to the ones that don't make the cut
Minimum Qualifications
Hands-on performance engineering experience: profiling, roofline analysis, latency/throughput optimization, and root-cause investigation in complex production systems
Proficiency in Python, with the ability to read, instrument, and contribute to large production codebases you didn’t write
Solid data analysis skills (e.g. SQL, pandas, or similar) sufficient to turn raw telemetry into clear findings
Ability to communicate quantitative results clearly in writing to influence priorities on teams you don't manage
Genuine interest in correctness as an engineering discipline: numerics, evaluation design, regression detection
Preferred Qualifications
Experience with ML systems, especially training or inference infrastructure or general LLM serving stacks. Direct large-scale inference experience is a strong plus
Familiarity with GPU/TPU/accelerator performance concepts (memory bandwidth, kernel overheads, quantization, collective communication). Reasoning about these matters more than having written kernels yourself
Experience with reliability engineering for high-throughput services: autoscaling, load balancing, request routing, tail latency
Experience with model evaluation or numerical regression-detection pipelines
Experience building observability or telemetry for distributed systems
Comfortable having impact through influence and evidence rather than direct ownership
Representative Projects
Trace a 350ms latency gap on a new accelerator platform from end-to-end request timing down to a server scheduling overhead, quantify the win, and land the fix directly or with the owning team
Redesign the correctness eval gate: determine which signals reliably catch real model-output regressions versus noise, and make it the trusted release criterion across hardware backends
Build a FLOPs funnel that breaks down where compute actually goes across the fleet, exposing the gap between achieved throughput and kernel rooflines
Root-cause a numerical divergence between two hardware platforms to a specific kernel change, and define the acceptance threshold going forward
Model the latency–cost impact of changing batch-sizing and utilization targets, and turn the result into the signal the autoscaler uses in production
Deadline to apply: None. Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis.

How we're different
We believe that the highest-impact AI research will be big science. At Anthropic we work as a single cohesive team on just a few large-scale research efforts. And we value impact — advancing our long-term goals of steerable, trustworthy AI — rather than work on smaller and more specific puzzles. We view AI research as an empirical science, which has as much in common with physics and biology as with traditional efforts in computer science. We're an extremely collaborative group, and we host frequent research discussions to ensure that we are pursuing the highest-impact work at any given time. As such, we greatly value communication skills.
The easiest way to understand our research directions is to read our recent research. This research continues many of the directions our team worked on prior to Anthropic, including: GPT-3, Circuit-Based Interpretability, Multimodal Neurons, Scaling Laws, AI & Compute, Concrete Problems in AI Safety, and Learning from Human Preferences.
Come work with us!
Anthropic is a public benefit corporation headquartered in San Francisco. We offer competitive compensation and benefits, optional equity donation matching, generous vacation and parental leave, flexible working hours, and a lovely office space in which to collaborate with colleagues.
