WordPress doesn’t try to keep its users inside walled gardens, a rare thing in a world that is dangerously moving away from the open web. Instead, WordPress gives them the freedom to build a business website, an online store, or a personal blog – the way they like it. Big sites or small, using the community-run
open source project
or Automattic’s
WordPress.com
, vanilla or customized with hundreds of plugins, WordPress users always get to own and control their data, their expression, and their freedom.

How do we work?
We’re
kind to each other
and our users – we build a positive, supportive, and inclusive culture of cohesive teams focused on building useful products for our customers.
We work as a global and distributed workforce resulting in a unique way of working built around
our creed
.
We offer flexible work arrangements allowing our team members to work when they feel best.
We open-source! We’re cool with
open-sourcing
everything except passwords, or secret keys.
We ship often,
deploying many
times daily with the help of peer code review, continuous integration, and our global workforce in over 70 countries.
We welcome collaboration, and you can be involved in any discussion across our many communication channels.
We encourage you to learn and develop and we support you with what you need – covering expenses, easy internal mobility, coaching.
Enough about us, let‘s talk more about you. Working at Automattic might be a good fit if:
You care and often obsess over the quality and the details of your work.
Debugging any problem is a fun challenge and not a chore.
Understanding the layers of abstraction below and above your work isn't something extra, but how you operate.
You have production experience with several programming languages, frameworks, and paradigms. We mostly use PHP and JavaScript at Automattic, we expect you to be comfortable with the idea of becoming an expert in these languages, even if being one isn't a requirement to apply.
In your mind abstraction is associated as much with cost as it is with value.
You have experience working at scale – it can be on the backend and performance side, or via the complexity of interacting with a multi-million diverse userbase.
Are open and able to travel 3-4 weeks per year to meet up with your teammates in person.
These are exciting times at Automattic and you’ll have a unique opportunity to shape the future of our products. Join us! We look forward to hearing from you.

ABOUT US
Sierra is the leading platform for customer-facing AI agents, working with many of the world's biggest brands — including The GAP, Rocket Mortgage, SoFi, Sutter Health, and SoftBank — to transform how they serve customers and grow their businesses. We are primarily an in-person company based in San Francisco, with growing offices across North America, Europe, and Asia.
We are guided by a set of values that are at the core of our actions and define our culture: Trust, Customer Obsession, Craftsmanship, Intensity, and a commitment to balancing Family along the way. These values are the foundation of our work, and we are committed to upholding them in everything we do.
Our co-founders are Bret Taylor https://www.linkedin.com/in/brettaylor/ and Clay Bavor https://www.linkedin.com/in/claybavor/. Bret currently serves as Board Chair of OpenAI. Before founding Sierra, Clay spent 18 years at Google, where he most recently led Google Labs. Earlier, he started and led Google’s AR/VR effort, Project Starline, and Google Lens. Before that, Clay led the product and design teams for Google Workspace.

- Pride in building reliable, maintainable, and secure systems that scale.

- Customer Obsession: We deeply understand our customers’ business goals and relentlessly focus on driving outcomes, not just technical milestones. Everyone at the company knows and spends time with our customers. When our customer is having an issue, we drop everything and fix it.
- Craftsmanship: We get the details right, from the words on the page to the system architecture. We have good taste. When we notice something isn’t right, we take the time to fix it. We are proud of the products we produce. We continuously self-reflect to continuously self-improve.
- Intensity: We know we don’t have the luxury of patience. We play to win. We care about our product being the best, and when it isn’t, we fix it. When we fail, we talk about it openly and without blame so we succeed the next time.

This is an office based role.
We expect the suitable candidate to be based in Toronto as you will be required to work on-site at our lab.
We are hiring a MAAS Systems Engineer to focus on building tooling to increase data center operational efficiency. As a MAAS Systems Engineer in Canonical, you will be responsible for the day-to-day management and operations of our lab in the Toronto area, which we use for Ubuntu server certification of US based silicon and server designs. You'll write and use software that deploys and configures servers and network switches, and solve difficult design problems related to doing this well and fast at scale. You will work with a mixture of hardware: cutting edge new silicon that Kernel Team and Partner Engineering teams work on to make them run Linux extremely well, as well as established hardware to make sure new versions of Ubuntu are smooth and fast. This role is a combination of software engineering focusing on reliable automated hardware commissioning and deployment, as well as testing, troubleshooting and experimentation focusing on improving reliability and performance of our software. You don't need to be an expert in all of these areas, but you need to be a good software engineer who is curious about complex distributed systems to succeed in this role. If you love hacking in your home lab, have good Python skills, and are curious about data centre hardware, you will love this opportunity.

Use your Python development skills to develop the Metal as a Service (MAAS) software to work with a large variety of server and network hardware.
Actively expand MAAS functionality by creating integrations with testing and scheduling software such as Testflinger.
Contribute improvements and fixes to Testflinger.
Remotely operate a fully automated server lab with the latest server and network silicon from leading vendors, making sure it remains available to other teams.
Improve and extend hardware and network monitoring through automation.
Collaborate with other MAAS engineers, as well as data centre hardware specialists, teams responsible for certifying hardware for Ubuntu, kernel engineers and other teams who use the hardware lab.
What we are looking for in you
STEM Bachelor’s degree, preferably in Computer Science or Software Engineering
Curiosity to find out why some systems misbehave, and drive to figure out how to make them behave
Python programming experience
Linux Administration experience
Ability to communicate clearly and effectively in English
Ability to work with a globally distributed team of passionate engineers
An exceptional academic track record from both high school and preferably university
Willingness to travel up to 4 times a year for internal events
Nice-to-have skills
Mix of Rack and Virtual systems experience
Troubleshooting skills
Systematic approach to testing
Love for performance engineering
Data centre operations experience
