Hi, I'm Manu, Engineering Manager at
Customer.io
. We're looking for experienced backend engineers who want to build and own the infrastructure that powers one of the most data-intensive platforms in marketing automation — systems that process millions of events per second, orchestrate complex workflows at scale, and keep everything running reliably for thousands of customers worldwide.
You'll work on the Platform team, tackling hard distributed systems problems: designing for fault tolerance, scaling services under real production pressure, and building the foundational layers that every other team at
Customer.io
depends on. This isn't just maintenance work — you'll shape the architecture of systems that need to be both highly available and constantly evolving.
If you're someone who gets energized by the intersection of scale, reliability, and developer experience — and wants ownership over infrastructure that truly matters — we'd love to talk.
What you'll bring:
Deep experience with distributed systems and large-scale backend architecture
Strong instincts around reliability, observability, and fault tolerance
Comfort reasoning about performance, capacity, and trade-offs at scale
Experience with event-driven systems, message queues, or data pipelines is a plus
A collaborative mindset — you raise the team around you
About
Customer.io
Over 9,000 companies - from scrappy startups to global brands - use our platform to send billions of emails, push notifications, in-app messages, and SMS every day.
Customer.io
powers automated communication that people actually want to receive.
We help teams send smarter, more relevant messages using real-time behavioral data. Under the hood: Go, React, Ember and AI help us ship fast and scale with confidence.
What We Value
Ownership
You drive technical direction across systems and teams. You move with urgency, build with empathy, and think long-term. You’ve led large-scale infrastructure initiatives and know what it takes to get them over the line.
Engineers with customer focus
You think about how infrastructure unlocks customer value. You care about developer experience, system design, and how your work shapes the customer experience.
A healthy disregard for “the way things are done”
You bring rigor and creativity. Best practices matter, but never more than forward motion.
What You’ll Do
Design and evolve distributed systems in Go to handle billions of daily events and messages and store and index petabytes of data
Lead architectural decisions around performance, reliability, and real-time event processing
Improve service-to-service communication through better APIs, messaging systems, and event-driven patterns
Work across teams to uncover bottlenecks and system issues, and lead initiatives to resolve them for a smoother customer experience
Tackle high-throughput challenges across data pipelines, queues, and scheduling infrastructure
Able to debug production systems at scale using effective instrumentation, and resolve issues quickly and confidently
Participate in an on-call rotation as required, supporting the reliability of the systems you build
Share knowledge and raise the bar through sharing your progress publicly with short videos, thoughtful writing, and mentorship
Leverage AI tools to prototype, move faster, and make better decisions
What we're looking for
Significant experience (typically 10+ years) building scalable, distributed systems in Go (or similar statically typed languages)
Deep experience with databases - relational (MySQL, Postgres) and non-relational (DynamoDB, BigTable) - and how to make them fast
Comfort working in cloud-native environments (AWS, GCP)
Familiarity with APIs, observability, and operating production systems
A bias for action over perfection, and pride in owning technical decisions
Compensation & Benefits
We believe in transparency. Starting salary for this role is $150,000 - $200,000 USD (or equivalent in local currency) depending on experience and subject to market rate adjustment. In addition to base salary, this role includes an equity grant in the form of stock options, so you share in the success you help build.

About
Customer.io
Over 9,000 companies — from scrappy startups to global brands — use our platform to send billions of emails, push notifications, in-app messages, and SMS every day.
Customer.io
powers automated communication that people actually want to receive. We help teams send smarter, more relevant messages using real-time behavioral data.
About the role
Hi, my name is Nick Guardino, Senior Director of Marketing Ops at
Customer.io
, and I'm looking for a GTM AI Engineer to help take our AI agents from scrappy prototypes to production-grade systems our GTM teams can depend on.
Over the last 3.5 months, our GTM AI team has built 11 agents now running in production, serving 120 active users and roughly 25,000 tool calls a day — all through custom CLIs that work, but weren't built to scale. We believe businesses can run leaner and go further when they deploy AI agents well, and we're figuring out that motion in real time. This role owns the scale and reliability layer so the rest of the team can keep building.
What we value
Craft over quick wins
— energized by making things robust, not just making them work.
A point of view
— we want someone who asks "why did you build it that way?" and has a specific answer for what to do instead.
Comfortable being wrong
— you try things fast, and you course-correct just as fast.
AI-native by default
— you'd rather direct Claude to write and QA code than write it by hand.
What you'll do
Alpha-to-production ownership
— take newly built agents from working v1 to production-ready: write evals, harden prompts and tool definitions, and refactor prototype scaffolding into clean, production-quality code.
Observability & stability
— instrument tracing, logging, and monitoring across the agent fleet so we catch regressions before our 120+ GTM users do.
Deployment & infrastructure
— stand up and maintain the pipelines that get agents into users' hands without surprises, owning environment parity and release hygiene on our GCP stack.
Database administration
— own how agents read from and write to our databases, safely and at scale.
Fleet maintenance
— monitor agent behavior in production, triage issues, and ship the steady stream of improvements that make an agent indispensable rather than just useful.
Partner closely with the GTM AI team
— free up our agent builders to stay in their zero-to-one wheelhouse while you own scale and reliability.
Bring an outside point of view
— tell us what we built wrong, and back it up with a plan to fix it.
What we're looking for
4+ years in software engineering, platform/infrastructure engineering, or a similarly technical role, ideally at a B2B SaaS company.
Comfort working in the terminal daily, with a real GitHub PR-and-deploy workflow.
Cloud hosting experience — Kubernetes, VMs, or equivalent; Google Cloud experience strongly preferred.
Experience with how agents interact with and edit databases, including some hands-on database administration.
Familiarity with LLM-based application development: prompt engineering, tool/function calling, evals, and modern agent frameworks.
Ability to prompt AI tools correctly, review their output critically, and direct them to QA their own work — this is an AI-native role, not a hand-coding one.
Scrappy enough to iterate fast, disciplined enough to think about consistency once something needs to scale.
A point of view, and the willingness to ask "why did you build it that way?"
Compensation & Benefits
We believe in transparency. Starting salary for this role is
$140,000–$170,000 USD
(or equivalent in local currency) depending on experience and subject to market rate adjustment. In addition to base salary, this role includes an equity grant in the form of stock options, so you share in the success you help build.
We know our people are what make us great, and we’re committed to taking great care of them. Our inclusive benefits package supports your well-being and growth, including
100% coverage of medical, dental, vision, mental health, and supplemental insurance premiums for you and your family
. We also offer
16 weeks paid parental leave, unlimited PTO
, stipends for remote work and wellness, a professional development budget, and more.

WHAT WE'RE LOOKING FOR
- 5+ years of software engineering experience, with a track record of owning and delivering complex systems end-to-end, not just contributing to them.
- Strong backend engineering - designing and operating production-grade APIs and services: clean data modeling, reliable error handling, performance under load.
- Data engineering at PB+ scale - building and maintaining pipelines that move, transform, and validate large volumes of data reliably; understanding of batch and streaming processing patterns, data quality, and schema evolution.
- Workflow orchestration at scale - designing and operating multi-step automated pipelines with retries, observability, and graceful failure handling.
- Distributed systems fundamentals - you understand how things break at scale: eventual consistency, idempotency, backpressure, job scheduling, and failure modes in distributed compute and storage.
- Cloud infrastructure fluency - you have shipped and operated real systems on a major cloud provider; you think about cost, reliability, and security as first-class concerns, not afterthoughts.
- Container orchestration - deploying and operating workloads on Kubernetes at a level where you can debug scheduling issues, design resource allocation, and reason about cluster health without guidance.
- Full-stack range - comfortable building both the backend and the frontend of an internal product; you can own a feature from database schema to UI without handing off.
- Production ownership mindset - you've been on-call, triaged incidents under pressure, and improved systems after postmortems. You take reliability personally.
Nice to Have
- ML infrastructure or MLOps experience - understanding of how training jobs run, how model artifacts are managed, and what makes an evaluation pipeline trustworthy; you've worked alongside or directly supported ML researchers.
- Distributed compute frameworks - experience with large-scale parallel data processing, whether for data transformation, model training, or evaluation.
- Domain knowledge in robotics or embodied AI - familiarity with robot data formats, sensor telemetry, or the sim-to-real evaluation loop is a significant head start.
- BI and data warehouse experience - building data models and dashboards that translate raw operational data into decisions for non-technical stakeholders.
- Dual-cloud or multi-cloud storage - experience reasoning about cost, latency, and consistency tradeoffs across storage providers.
- Frontend product sense - beyond just shipping features, you have opinions about what makes an internal tool actually usable by non-engineers.
WHAT WE OFFER
- Competitive equity: stock options with meaningful upside as we scale.
- 30+ paid days off, including 23 days of annual leave, all UK bank holidays, and additional company closure days (including Christmas–New Year shutdown).
- Private healthcare, including virtual and in-person care.
- Pension scheme with 8% total contribution (5% employee, 3% employer) on full earnings.
- Free daily breakfast, catered lunch, and snacks in-office.
- Work at the frontier - collaborate daily with world-class engineers, researchers, and product experts building the next generation of AI and humanoid robotics.
- Real ownership - direct access to founding leadership, meaningful input on product direction, and the ability to drive key initiatives from day one.
