About the job
As a member of our AI research team, you will drive innovation in model compression and efficient deployment for advanced multimodal AI systems, including large language models (LLMs) and vision-language models (VLMs). Your work will focus on reducing model footprint and computational cost while preserving accuracy, enabling high-performance AI to run efficiently across resource-constrained edge devices. You will apply and advance compression techniques such as quantization, knowledge distillation, and pruning to streamline complex multimodal architectures that integrate text, images, and audio.
We expect you to have deep expertise in model compression methods and a strong background in multimodal model architectures. You will adopt a hands-on, research-driven approach to develop, test, and implement novel compression strategies that balance model size, latency, throughput, and accuracy. Your responsibilities include building robust compression pipelines, establishing performance and fidelity metrics, and addressing bottlenecks in production inference. The ultimate goal is to deliver scalable, low-memory, low-latency AI systems on edge devices (i.e., smartphones) that maintain high fidelity and tangible real-world value.
Responsibilities
Break down the key responsibilities in bullet points. It’s helpful to make them actionable and measurable. This could also be grouped into categories for more complex roles.
Apply low-bit quantization to reduce model size and inference latency for generative AI models (LLMs, VLMs, multimodal) while maintaining accuracy and output quality.
Leverage knowledge distillation to transfer capabilities from larger teacher models to smaller student models, enabling efficient multimodal reasoning across text, image, and audio inputs.
Implement pruning techniques to remove redundant parameters and attention heads, reducing computational overhead without sacrificing task performance.
Analyze trade-offs between model efficiency (size, latency, memory) and accuracy across quantization, distillation, and pruning methods; propose improvements based on empirical findings.
Research and apply mixed-precision quantization and other advanced compression strategies (e.g., adaptive pruning schedules, distillation with intermediate feature matching) to optimize the accuracy–performance balance.
Stay current with the latest research in model compression, including emerging techniques for multimodal and generative architectures.
Document methodologies, experiments, and results clearly to support reproducibility, internal collaboration, and stakeholder communication.
Author technical papers and publish findings in top-tier conferences (e.g., NeurIPS, ICML, ICLR, CVPR, ACL, AAAI) to advance the field of model compression for multimodal AI.
List the qualifications, certifications, and experience needed for the role. You can split this into mandatory and preferred sections if needed.
A degree in Computer Science or related field. Ideally PhD in NLP, Machine Learning, or a related field, complemented by a solid track record in AI R&D (with good publications in A* conferences).
Experience with PyTorch deep learning frameworks or equivalent frameworks
Hands-on experience with model quantization including both Quantization-Aware Training (QAT) and Post-Training Quantization (PTQ).
Research and hands-on experience with knowledge distillation for compressing large models into smaller, efficient ones.
Research and hands-on experience with model pruning for compressing large models into smaller, efficient ones.
Solid understanding of neural network architectures and training processes – Including transformers (e.g., LLMs, VLMs), backpropagation, optimization, and fine-tuning techniques.
Familiarity with C++ is a plus (especially for implementing low-level quantization kernels or inference optimizations).

ABOUT SUPABASE
Supabase is the Postgres development platform, built by developers for developers. We provide a complete backend solution including Database, Auth, Storage, Edge Functions, Realtime, and Vector Search. All services are deeply integrated and designed for growth.
ABOUT THE ROLE
We're looking for an engineer to drive the evolution of OrioleDB https://www.orioledb.com and its collaboration with the upstream PostgreSQL community. OrioleDB is a next-generation storage engine for PostgreSQL, and this role sits at the intersection of database internals, open source community work, and Supabase's managed Postgres platform.
This role requires strong working overlap with Americas time zones due to production support and on-call responsibilities.
What you'll work on
- New OrioleDB features. Design and implement new capabilities in OrioleDB — for example, native index access methods (GiST, GIN, HNSW for pgvector), disaster recovery tooling, and other storage-engine-level features that expand what OrioleDB can do.
- Stability. Strengthen OrioleDB's reliability through deeper test coverage, fault injection, crash and recovery testing, and improvements to CI infrastructure. Ensure regressions are caught early and that OrioleDB behaves predictably under stress, replication, and failure scenarios.
- Upstream collaboration. Contribute changes directly to PostgreSQL core. Part of OrioleDB lives as a patch on top of PostgreSQL — moving the right pieces upstream shrinks what we maintain ourselves and benefits the wider community. This happens through PostgreSQL's open development process: the pgsql-hackers mailing list, public code review, and commitfests.
- Supabase integration. Work with Supabase's Postgres team to ensure OrioleDB fits naturally into Supabase's managed offering and roadmap.
YOU WILL:
- Design, implement, and test new OrioleDB features and integrate them cleanly with PostgreSQL's planner, executor, and surrounding subsystems.
- Build out and maintain test infrastructure: regression suites, fuzzing, randomized testing, crash and recovery testing, and CI pipelines.
- Identify and prepare patches suitable for upstreaming to PostgreSQL core.
- Improve performance, resilience, monitoring, and operational tooling for production use.
- Debug and resolve complex issues in low-level C code, including in storage, replication, indexing, and query execution paths.
- Participate in design discussions, architecture reviews, and code reviews — both inside Supabase and in the PostgreSQL community.
- Write clear technical documentation, design notes, and upstream proposals.
- Contribute to troubleshooting, analyzing, supporting and maintaining OrioleDB in production deployments. This can include answering support ticket requests, an on-call rotation, and supporting our team members in troubleshooting and fixing live customer production databases.
YOU ARE:
- An existing PostgreSQL core contributor or have equivalent experience in Database internals.
- An expert C programmer with 8+ years of production experience with focus on low-level systems programming
- Deeply familiar with PostgreSQL’s codebase, build system, and extension APIs.
- Have experience designing or implementing database storage engines, index structures, or query execution components.
- Comfortable contributing to community‑driven, upstream open source projects.
- Proficient in debugging and profiling complex C code in a database context.
- Able to write clear technical documentation and explain design trade‑offs.
- A strong communicator, committed to an open and collaborative development process.
WHAT WE OFFER
- Fully Remote
We hire globally. We believe you can do your best work from anywhere. There are no Supabase offices, but we provide a WeWork membership or co-working allowance you can use anywhere in the world.
- ESOP
Every team member receives ESOP (equity ownership) in the company. We want everyone to share in the upside of what we’re building together.
- Tech Allowance
Use this budget to set up your ideal work environment—laptop, monitor, headphones, or whatever helps you do your best work.
- Health Benefits
Supabase covers 100% of health insurance for employees and 80% for dependents, wherever you are. Your wellbeing and your family’s health are important to us.
- Annual Off-Sites
Once a year, the entire company gathers in a new city for a week of connection, collaboration, and fun. It’s a highlight of our year.
- Flexible Work
We operate asynchronously and trust you to manage your own time. You know what needs to be done and when.
- Professional Development

About the job
As a member of the AI model team, you will drive innovation in post-training methodologies, with a special focus on agentic behaviors and tool use. Your work will refine pre-trained models so that they not only deliver enhanced intelligence and domain specific capabilities, but also learn to reason, plan, and autonomously invoke external tools to solve real world, multi step tasks and applications on edge devices (i.e., smartphones).
You will work on a wide spectrum of systems, ranging from streamlined, resource efficient agents that run on limited hardware to complex multi modal architectures integrating text, images, and audio, all optimized for tool augmented decision making.
We expect you to have deep expertise in large language model architectures and substantial experience in post-training for agentic workflows, including tool use fine tuning, function calling, and reinforcement learning from feedback on multi turn interactions. You will adopt a hands-on, research driven approach to developing, testing, and implementing new post-training algorithms that unlock goal directed behavior, self correction, and reliable tool invocation.
Your responsibilities include curating agentic training data (e.g., trajectories of tool use, reasoning chains, environment interactions), strengthening baseline performance, and identifying as well as resolving bottlenecks in post-training for tool augmented agents to achieve SOTA model quality. The goal is to build models that do not just know but also act, use tools, and adapt, pushing the limits of what agentic AI can achieve.
Responsibilities
Conduct end-to-end research and engineering initiatives to advance post-training of agentic and tool-use models to achieve SOTA results.
Drive broad, cross-cutting model improvements, including factuality, instruction adherence, tool/function use, multi-agent coordination, and reasoning calibration.
Design and enhance large-scale post-training systems, including data pipelines, training workflows, evaluation frameworks, and benchmark infrastructure.
Develop rigorous evaluation suites and diagnostic tools to assess model readiness for deployment.
Strengthen feedback loops from real-world product usage, incorporating both explicit and implicit user signals into post-training.
Collaborate with tooling, product, and training teams to improve the usefulness, reliability, and agentic capabilities of frontier models.
Closely liaise with research, engineering and cross-functional teams to determine which integrations are production-ready for inclusion in major model releases.
Degree in Computer Science, Machine Learning, or a related field; advanced degree (MS/PhD) preferred with a strong publication record in top-tier AI conferences.
Experience with multimodal post-training workflows and data pipelines, particularly for agentic systems and tool use.
Hands-on experience applying post-training at scale using distributed training frameworks (e.g., multi-node GPU environments).
Demonstrated experience improving model capabilities in areas such as reasoning, tool use, and multi-agent coordination that achieve SOTA results.
Proven track record of open-source contributions related to agentic systems or tool use (code, datasets, or models) on platforms such as GitHub or Hugging Face.
Publications at leading AI conferences (e.g., NeurIPS, ICML, ICLR, ACL, CVPR, ECCV).
