What We’re Building
Honeycomb is a service for the near and present future, defining observability and raising expectations of what developer tools can do! We’re working with well known companies like HelloFresh, Slack, LaunchDarkly, and Vanguard and more across a range of industries. This is an exciting time in our trajectory, we’ve closed Series D funding, scaled past the 200-person mark, and were named to Forbes’ America’s Best Startups of 2022 and 2023!
If you want to see what we’ve been up to, please check out these
blog posts
and Honeycomb.io
press releases
.
Who We Are
We come for the impact, and stay for the culture! We’re a talented, opinionated, passionate, fiercely inclusive, and responsible group of bees. We have conviction and we strive to live
our values
every day. We want our people to do what they truly love amongst a team of highly talented (but humble) peers.
How We Work
We are a fully distributed company, which means we believe it is not where you sit, but how you deliver that matters most. We invest in our people and care about how you orient to our culture and processes. At the same time we imbue a lot of trust, autonomy, and accountability from Day 1. #LI-Remote
Little more about the team:
The Storage Team at Honeycomb is the backbone of our platform, responsible for the performance, reliability, and scalability of storing and querying billions of events. We design and own the architecture that powers correct and dependable query results — enabling every product experience from Metrics to Triggers and SLOs. As a senior engineer on Storage, you’ll work on high-impact systems where our customers may never see your code directly, but they’ll rely on it every time they use Honeycomb.
What you’ll do in the role:
Build and deliver high-quality solutions. You will design and implement solutions that power Honeycomb’s query and data storage infrastructure. Whether it’s improving query performance, evolving the Retriever service, or making our storage layer more reliable, you’re eager to jump in and add value where the team needs it most.
Scope and deliver projects independently. You’re comfortable breaking down complex storage and querying problems into achievable steps, surfacing trade-offs, and pulling in teammates when needed. You take ownership end-to-end — from design to production support — reducing toil and ensuring our systems deliver measurable customer and business impact.
Collaborate with cross-functional partners. You’ll work closely with Product Management and other engineering teams to connect technical solutions to product needs, from problem discovery through solution design and delivery. Much of our work is behind the scenes, but it enables every Honeycomb product experience, from Metrics to Triggers and SLOs.
Support our services in production. We believe in owning the software we build. Every engineer on Storage participates in on-call rotations, helps define team KPIs and SLOs, and proactively reduces toil by addressing reliability challenges before they reach customers.
Learn new ways to solve complex problems. As Honeycomb grows, so do the challenges of scaling our systems. You will explore new technologies, data storage techniques, and query optimization strategies to keep performance and reliability strong at scale.
Thrive on collaboration. You enjoy pairing, reviewing code, and offering constructive feedback. You model strong ownership and help your teammates grow, while keeping conversations forward-looking and focused on business value.
What you’ll bring to the role:
Technical leadership in storage and querying. You’ve led the design of patterns and guidelines that improve performance and reliability, and you bring expertise in writing Go along with experience working on high-throughput or complex systems. Prior experience with database engineering is a plus, as is comfort with Kubernetes.
Curiosity and experimentation. You learn by digging in — individually, in pairs, or as a team. You ask questions to better understand complex systems, explore trade-offs, and believe in learning from incidents as a way to improve both technology and practices.
Focus on business outcomes. You tie technical decisions to customer and company impact, weighing whether work is necessary now or later, and considering how projects affect the broader business.
Strength in mentorship and teamwork. You guide engineers through code reviews and help spread knowledge across a team with diverse skillsets so that ownership of critical paths is shared, not siloed.
Resilience in collaboration. You thrive in a senior-heavy team, giving and receiving feedback with grace, and contributing to a culture where tough problems and hard conversations lead to better outcomes.
Execution with impact. You can scope and deliver complex, multi-team projects while balancing production realities, proactively reducing toil, and ensuring systems deliver measurable customer value.
Deep debugging expertise. You’re trusted to diagnose and resolve the toughest production issues across the stack, restoring reliability where others may be stuck.
Influence beyond your team. You multiply impact by sharing knowledge, guiding adoption of new technologies, and driving foundational work that benefits Honeycomb engineering as a whole.

WHO WE ARE
Notion is the collaborative AI workspace where teams and agents think together https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vkpYpWfEK5s. We're building one place where your knowledge, projects, meetings, and AI tools live side by side, so work is faster, clearer, and less fragmented. Millions of individuals, small teams, and large companies run their work on Notion.
Notinos (our employees) are customer zero in bringing this future of work to life. We care about craft, building things that last, and the belief that great work is still fundamentally human. Our goal isn’t to ship the next feature. Each and every team of Notinos is working to set the standard for how humans work together in the AI era. From building a business’s system of record to making and managing AI agents to automating away the busy work, we care deeply about giving our customers more time for their life’s work.
ABOUT THE ROLE:
As a Developer Platform https://www.notion.com/product/dev engineer, you will directly contribute to the foundational pieces that make Notion extensible and connected. You will build tools, APIs, and platform experiences that help customers connect Notion to the world — bringing their apps, data, and workflows into one workspace. Your work will make it easier for developers, admins, and builders to create reliable integrations and automations on top of Notion.
You will be a key player in building the robust technical foundation that allows Notion to achieve the connected workspace vision. Your work will include both internal platform contributions that accelerate other Notion engineering teams and end-user-facing functionality that enables toolmaking ubiquity. You will be presented with challenging technical problems, as Notion’s product needs are complex. You’ll play a key role in identifying and executing against technical investments that ensure the long-term quality, reliability, and performance of Notion’s platform as we scale.
This role can be based in either San Francisco or New York City. We work from our offices on Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays (our Anchor Days) because we do our best thinking and building together in person. We’re looking for someone who’s excited to work alongside the team during those days.
WHAT YOU'LL ACHIEVE:
- You’ll work with a team of engineers and cross-functional partners across product, design, data science, and user research to define a product strategy and drive execution through conception, research, implementation, and maintenance.
- You’ll evolve Developer Platform capabilities across APIs, MCP tools, and integration infrastructure that help customers automate workflows, customize Notion, and connect Notion to the tools and data they use every day.
- You’ll contribute to the overall performance, reliability, and robustness of the Notion product, ensuring it scales elegantly across many dimensions.
- You’ll partner with engineering leaders to identify and execute against high-leverage technical investments that ensure the long-term flexibility and sustainability of our core systems.
SKILLS YOU'LL NEED TO BRING:
- 10+ years of experience shipping production software, with a strong track record of owning features end-to-end
- Fluency with TypeScript across both backend and frontend
- Strong product instincts: you can take a vague problem, propose a solid technical approach, and know when to cut scope
- You don’t need to be an AI expert, but you’re curious and willing to adopt AI tools to work smarter and deliver better results
NICE TO HAVES:
- Experience building developer tools like APIs and SDKs
- Experience driving teams toward shared goals and balancing business priorities with individuals’ strengths, areas of interest, and career development goals
- Familiarity with AI/agent tooling, evals, or LLM-driven product experiences
Notion is committed to providing highly competitive cash compensation, equity, and benefits. The compensation offered for this role will be based on multiple factors such as location, the role’s scope and complexity, and the candidate’s experience and expertise, and may vary from the range provided below. For roles based in San Francisco or New York City, the estimated base salary range for this role is $272,000 – $304,000 per year.

A NOTE ON AI
You don’t need deep AI expertise for every role, but we do expect every Notino to be intellectually curious, drawn to tinkering and discovery, and excited to use AI as a real collaborator in their work. For some roles, AI fluency is a core requirement — when that’s the case, we'll say so explicitly in the qualifications. People who thrive here don’t treat AI as a novelty. They use it to think better, and make their work easier for others to build on.
EQUAL OPPORTUNITY & ACCOMMODATIONS
We hire talented people from a wide range of backgrounds. If you’re excited about this role but don’t meet every bullet, we still encourage you to apply. Notion is an equal opportunity employer and does not discriminate on the basis of any legally protected characteristic. Consistent with applicable law, we will consider for employment qualified applicants with arrest and conviction records. Notion provides reasonable accommodations during the application process; if you need one, please let your recruiter know.

As we bring our teams and technology together, we’re building on the strengths of both companies while continuing to deliver the products and experiences our customers know and trust. During this transition period, you may see references to both Fivetran and dbt Labs throughout our recruiting process as we integrate our teams, systems, and career sites.
About the Role
As a Staff Full-Stack Engineer on the Cloud Clients team, you’ll own end-to-end delivery across the surfaces where dbt developers do their work:
dbt Studio in the browser, the dbt VS Code extension, and the CLI workspace runtime that powers both
.
You’ll help build dbt’s
AI-native developer experience
, including agent workflows, diff review, streaming tool calls, charts and rich outputs for conversational analytics, and MCP apps that bring dbt projects directly into tools like Claude and Codex. This is a true full-stack role: you’ll work across
Python, TypeScript, React, and Kubernetes
, with the expectation that you can take a feature from schema and service design through to the final pixel without a handoff
What you’ll do
Own parts of the CLI workspace runtime that backs both surfaces, including migrating users off our legacy IDE and enabling asynchronous, background agent runs.
Design and build agent-facing experiences: streaming responses, transparent tool calls, diff review, and charting / rich output for conversational analytics.
Extend dbt into other developer surfaces — MCP integrations that make dbt projects usable directly from AI clients like Claude and Codex.
Lead well-scoped projects end to end: write the plan, partner with design and product, ship in two-week increments, and measure whether it worked.
Share oncall and customer support for your surfaces, and mentor engineers earlier in their careers.
Skills we are looking for
8+ years building production software, including senior-level ownership of projects that ran for months and involved several people.
Deep Python experience plus exposure to TypeScript and React experience — you move across the stack without waiting for a handoff.
Built and maintained something other developers depend on: an IDE, an editor extension, a CLI, an SDK, an LSP server, or a data tool.
Comfort with the operational side of shipping — APIs, Kubernetes, Postgres, observability — and with being on the hook when something breaks.
Strong written communication: you can make a technical argument in a document and bring people along.
Worked asynchronously as part of a fully-remote, distributed team
Bonus points for
Shipped LLM- or agent-powered features to production, with real opinions on evaluation, latency, cost, and where models fall down.
Worked with the Language Server Protocol, Monaco, CodeMirror, or other code-editor internals.
Hands-on dbt, SQL, or data warehouse experience (Snowflake, Databricks, BigQuery, Redshift).
Migrated users off a legacy product surface and decommissioned it without breaking them.
Go, Rust, or systems-level performance experience.
