We’re scaling fast and staying true to what makes us different: an open-source legacy, a global collaborative culture, and a passion for meaningful work. Our team thrives in an innovation-driven environment where transparency, autonomy, and trust fuel everything we do.
You may not meet every requirement, and that’s okay. If this role excites you, we’d love you to raise your hand for what could be a truly career-defining opportunity.
This role is available for candidates located in the United States or Canada.
The Opportunity:
Grafana Cloud is our composable observability platform that integrates metrics, logs, traces, and profiles with Grafana. It allows our customers to leverage the best open source observability software – including Prometheus, Mimir, Loki, Tempo, and Pyroscope – without the overhead of installing, maintaining and scaling their own observability stack.
The Databases team owns the telemetry databases that are
Mimir for metrics
,
Loki for logs
,
Tempo for traces
, and
Pyroscope for profiles
. Our databases are OSS projects that we also offer as a Cloud service supporting Grafana Cloud, and as an on-premise solution. They are multi-tenant distributed systems implemented in Go and running on Kubernetes across all major Cloud service providers (GCP, Azure, AWS). We also have engineers working on
Prometheus
,
Grafana Alloy
,
Mimir proxies
, and OpenTelemetry.
As a company we are remote-first and global, we embrace people of different experiences and backgrounds to build diverse teams where every person brings a new perspective to the software. Our tech stack is mostly made up of services written in Go, running on multiple Kubernetes clusters that leverage Cloud object storage.
We invest heavily in developer productivity. You can use modern AI coding assistants as part of your daily workflow (your choice of tools, within security guidelines), backed by a company-funded usage budget so you can iterate quickly without unnecessary friction.
We encourage pragmatic AI-assisted development: faster prototyping, test generation, refactors, documentation, and incident follow-ups—always paired with strong code review and quality standards.
You'll also have access to the latest frontier models from OpenAI, Anthropic, and Google.
What You’ll Be Doing:
Design, build, operate, and maintain critical systems, owning the reliability, performance, and availability.
Take an active role in influencing our roadmap and your own career objectives.
Work with your team to deliver new features, then use the results to iterate and improve.
Drive projects from initial ideation all the way to operations once it is in the hands of customers.
Embrace our open-source culture and contribute to other projects that may not directly fall within your team’s scope.
Be a part of your team’s on-call rotations and take ownership of the services you’re running.
Mentor and support other team members, participate in design discussions, and collaborate with the team.
Learn new skills by gaining a deeper understanding of our cloud product and our customers and getting to know the codebase of a large distributed system.
As we are remote-first and our engineering organisation is largely remote, we provide guidance and meet regularly using video calls, so an independent attitude and good communication skills are a must.
What Makes You a Great Fit:
You are a motivated self starter with a bias towards action.
You are customer focused. We build everything with our users in mind. You have a passion for creating intuitive products that fit customers’ needs .
Pragmatism: You are able to take on complex challenges and break them down to achieve short feedback loops: to analyze, design, and build modular solutions, deliver MVPs, gather data and feedback, and then progress iteratively.
Collaboration and communication: The smallest unit we have is a team. You’ll be working with your teammates in a fully remote setup. Good communication skills are a must.
Requirements:
Solid experience with at least one programming language. We use Go, but if you have familiarity with Python, C, C++, Rust or similar then that translates well.
Some experience with delivering projects from gathering requirements and brainstorming ideas, all the way to shipping a product to the customer’s hands in a self-driven way.
Some experience with developing software that runs in the Cloud
or
some experience with systems engineering.
Experience writing clean, robust, and performant software that is easily maintained by others.
Bonus Points For:
Experience writing low level code for databases, storage layers, or query engines.
Experience working with Kubernetes.
Been a user of Grafana and/or Prometheus in operational roles (including on-call for your team at a previous employer or just using these tools in hobby/homelab projects).
Exposure to microservices architecture and distributed systems, or a desire to learn.
Familiarity with being on-call and performing operations/SRE tasks or with the concept of infrastructure as code.
Compensation & Rewards:
In Canada, the Base compensation range for this role is CAD 186,500 to AUD 223,500. Actual compensation may vary based on level, experience, and skillset as assessed in the interview process. Benefits include equity, bonus (if applicable) and other benefits listed
here
.
*Compensation ranges are country specific. If you are applying for this role from a different location than listed above, your recruiter will discuss your specific market’s defined pay range & benefits at the beginning of the process.

This is a remote position. We are looking for candidates in the US and Canada.
What is Grafana Cloud?
Grafana Cloud is our composable observability platform that integrates metrics, logs, traces, and profiles with Grafana. It allows our customers to leverage the best open source observability software – including Prometheus, Mimir, Loki, Tempo, and Pyroscope – without the overhead of installing, maintaining and scaling their own observability stack.
The Databases team owns and operates the telemetry databases that are
Mimir for metrics
,
Loki for logs
,
Tempo for traces
, and
Pyroscope for profiles
. Our databases are offered as a hosted service in Grafana Cloud, and additionally as on-premise solutions with
Grafana Enterprise Metrics
,
Grafana Enterprise Logs
, and
Grafana Enterprise Traces
. They are multi-tenant distributed systems implemented in Go and operating at scale on Kubernetes across all major Cloud service providers (AWS, GCP, Azure).
As a company we are remote-first and global, we embrace people of different experiences and backgrounds to build diverse teams where every person brings a new perspective to the software.
Mimir Squad
The Mimir squad has two sub-squads, Ingest and Query, which together maintain the
Mimir OSS project
, and additionally own and operate Grafana Cloud Metrics across three major cloud providers. Engineers on the team focus on optimizing the efficiency and resilience of processing, storing, and querying metrics at large volumes. These services operate at a large scale and performance is key to keeping the offering competitive and running smoothly.
A Mimir engineer has various work streams. They likely are engaged in a larger project with another engineer, as well as mixing in some performance and reliability improvements discovered through operating the system in production. They are also responsible for writing and reviewing PRs and design documents from other engineers in the squad, shepherding automated release rollouts, and participating in the on-call rotation for their systems.
What will you be doing?
Take a very active role in influencing our roadmap and your own career objectives
Work with your team to deliver new features, then use the results to iterate and improve.
Drive projects from initial idea all the way to operations once it is in the hands of customers
Embrace our open-source culture and contribute to other projects that may not directly fall within your team’s scope
Design, build, operate, and maintain critical systems, owning the reliability, performance, and availability
Be a part of your team’s follow-the-sun on-call rotations and take ownership of the services you’re running
Support other team members, participate in design discussions and collaborate with the team
Learn new skills by gaining a deeper understanding of our cloud product and our customers and getting to know the codebase of a large distributed system
As we are remote-first and our engineering organization is entirely remote, we provide guidance and meet regularly using video calls, so an independent attitude and good communication skills are a must.
What are we looking for in you?
You are a motivated self starter with a bias towards action. You are customer focused. We build everything with our users in mind. You have a passion for creating intuitive products that fit customers’ needs
Pragmatism: You are able to take on complex challenges and break them down to achieve short feedback loops: to analyze, design, and build modular solutions, deliver MVPs, gather data and feedback and then progress iteratively
Collaboration and communication: The smallest unit we have is a Squad. You’ll be working with your teammates in a fully remote setup. Good communication skills are a must
Solid experience with at least one programming language. We use Go, but if you have familiarity with Python, C, C++, Rust or similar then that translates well
Some experience with delivering projects from gathering requirements, brainstorming ideas all the way to shipping a product to the customer’s hands in a self-driven way
Some experience with developing software that runs in the Cloud
or
some experience with systems engineering
Some experience with being on-call and following the DevOps model
Experience writing clean, robust, and performant software that is easily maintained by others
Familiarity with observability systems, know when to use metrics, logs, traces, to debug a problem
Nice to haves:
Experience working with Kubernetes is highly desirable
Experience working with queue systems, e.g. the Kafka protocol
Been a user of Grafana and Prometheus in operational roles (including on-call for your team at a previous employer or just using these tools on hobby/homelab projects)
Exposure to microservices architecture and distributed systems, or a desire to learn
Familiarity with the concept of infrastructure as code

OUR STORY:
Every year millions of people are either filing their taxes in fear or giving up on their tax refund altogether. We're working on fixing that. Our intuitive app enables anyone, regardless of education or background, to file their taxes with newfound confidence.
Spread across Germany, Spain and the UK, the team at Taxfix Group with its brands Taxfix and Steuerbot, is a compassionate group of solution-finders. We speak our minds openly, and with over 400 professionals, including tax experts, developers, and IT security experts, we're rich in ideas and voices. The group has facilitated more than 3.5 billion euros in tax refunds for its customers since its founding in 2016.
THE OPPORTUNITY:
As a Staff Software Engineer, you’ll build core features for our flagship product, turning complex tax scenarios into simple, reliable experiences. You’ll bring a builder-first mindset: staying close to customer problems, using AI and modern engineering tools to move from idea to impact quickly, and taking ownership of outcomes—not just code.
You’ll work hands-on in a cross-functional team and bring deep expertise in either frontend or backend engineering, while collaborating effectively across the stack. You’ll help us raise the bar for scalable design, quality, maintainability, and AI-first software development.
YOUR RESPONSIBILITIES AND DECISIONS:
- Partner with product management, design, and engineering to understand customer problems, shape pragmatic solutions, and deliver measurable outcomes.
- Own work end to end—from discovery and technical design through implementation, release, monitoring, and iteration.
- Turn ambiguity into action, make sound trade-offs, and deliver valuable increments without compromising long-term maintainability.
- Contribute to technical direction and strategy in support of the long-term product vision.
- Use AI-assisted development tools in your daily engineering work to accelerate exploration, implementation, testing, debugging, and documentation while maintaining high engineering standards.
- Critically evaluate, validate, and troubleshoot AI-generated output, using effective prompting and appropriate safeguards rather than accepting results at face value.
- Share effective AI-assisted development practices, encourage responsible experimentation, and help teammates improve how they use AI tools.
- Improve developer experience through tools, automation, and engineering practices that enable reliable, frequent delivery.
- Collaborate across product and platform teams, and contribute to an environment where people learn, grow, give constructive feedback, and raise challenges safely.
YOUR PROFILE:
- Professional software engineering experience (React, Node.js) and designing reliable backend services and APIs. Experience with React Native experience is a plus.
- Able to work effectively across system boundaries and collaborate with engineers outside your primary specialism.
- Use AI-assisted development tools in your daily engineering work to accelerate exploration, implementation, testing, debugging, and documentation while maintaining high engineering standards.
- Able to evaluate and troubleshoot AI-generated output, use effective prompting where relevant, and share practical learnings with teammates.
- Experience working with a public cloud environment such as Google Cloud, AWS, or Microsoft Azure.
- Familiarity with DevOps concepts and practices, including CI/CD, observability, and operating software in production.
- Understanding of core application and backend concepts such as authentication, databases, distributed systems, cloud infrastructure, and API integrations.
- A builder-first, pragmatic approach: You turn customer problems into shipped outcomes. You take initiative, test and learn quickly, and make clear trade-offs between speed, quality, maintainability, and risk.
- Passion for writing maintainable, elegant code and continuously improving how software is built.
- A collaborative, positive attitude and a willingness to challenge ideas constructively.
- You have a builder mindset. You thrive in environments where things are still taking shape, take initiative to move ideas forward, and find ways to create impact even when the path isn't fully defined.
- You embrace trying things out over waiting for perfect conditions, ship early to learn fast, and treat iteration as progress.
WHY TAXFIX?
- A chance to do meaningful, people-centric work with an international team of passionate professionals.
- Holistic well-being with free mental health coaching sessions and yoga.
- A monthly allowance to spend on an extensive range of services that you can use and roll over as flexibly as you like.
- Employee stock options for all employees—because everyone deserves to benefit from the success they help to create.
- 30 annual vacation days and flexible working hours.
- Work from abroad for up to six weeks every year. Just align with your team, and then enjoy your trip.
- Plenty of opportunities to socialise as a team. In addition to internal tech meetups, our international team hosts regular get-togethers—virtually and in person when possible.
- Free tax declaration filing, of course, through the Taxfix app—and internal support for all personal tax-related questions.
- Have a four-legged friend in your life? We’re happy to have dogs join us in the office.
Excited? So are we. Check out our Life at Taxfix page on LinkedIn to get a glimpse of our culture.
At Taxfix, we believe that incredible things happen when you have a wealth of perspectives and experiences. We're proudly committed to equal employment and development opportunities no matter your gender, race, religion, age, sexual orientation, colour, disability, or place of origin. To help mitigate any potential unconscious biases, we ask that you refrain from including your picture, age, or marital status on your CV. Let your experiences speak for themselves.

Continuously identify and prioritize value creation opportunities across the existing portfolio, including growth, cross-business synergies, product / market adjacencies, partnerships, operating-model improvements and other strategic moves.
Structure each opportunity into a clear thesis covering expected value, strategic rationale, risks, dependencies, required capabilities, sequencing and success measures.
Work with the Portfolio Management Team and Business Owners to convert approved opportunities into roadmaps and executable initiatives without taking over day-to-day execution ownership.
Evaluation of New Projects, Markets & Strategic Moves
Lead independent strategic review of new project proposals and market plans before they are submitted for approval.
Assess strategic fit, market attractiveness, competitive position, economics, risk, execution readiness, alternatives and portfolio implications; test critical assumptions through scenarios and sensitivity analysis.
Formulate a clear recommendation - proceed, revise, stage, defer or stop - and define the key conditions or milestones required for success.
Partner with the M&A and Deal Team on strategic fit, investment thesis and portfolio impact of potential acquisitions, divestments and other transactions, while the Deal Team retains transaction execution ownership.
After-Action Review & Portfolio Learning
Establish a systematic after-action review approach for major strategic actions, initiatives and completed deals.
Compare actual outcomes with the original strategic thesis, expected economics, risk assumptions, milestones and value-creation plan, and assess the resulting effect on the group portfolio.
Capture lessons learned, identify repeatable patterns and feed findings back into strategy, evaluation frameworks and future recommendations.
Investment Committee & Executive Decision Support
Prepare clear, concise and decision-grade strategic recommendations for Investment Committee and senior leadership consideration.
Work with the Board / IC Secretary to ensure strategic materials are complete, internally consistent and framed around the decision required, alternatives, trade-offs and implications.
Support interpretation of execution feedback and result reporting from the Portfolio Management Team and Business Owners, focusing on strategic implications and any need to revisit prior assumptions or decisions.
Maintain a disciplined distinction between analysis / recommendation, governance decision-making and execution ownership.
Team Leadership & Functional Excellence
Lead, coach and develop the Strategy and Research Team; allocate work against the highest-value strategic questions and maintain clear accountability for output quality and deadlines.
Build repeatable methods, templates and analytical standards for strategy development, market / project evaluation, portfolio review, research and after-action analysis.
Create a high-trust culture that values intellectual honesty, constructive challenge, clear writing, collaboration and decision usefulness.
