We are looking for a hands-on DevOps Engineer with strong, recent AWS experience to join our infrastructure team.
You will work in a hybrid environment spanning AWS, private OpenStack clouds, OKD, virtual machines, and bare-metal Linux servers. We are primarily looking for someone coming from an AWS/Linux/automation background.
Our platform serves hundreds of thousands of requests per second across many thousands of virtual machines. We are therefore looking for someone who is already comfortable working with high-load, business-critical production systems, rather than someone whose experience has been limited to small-scale or early-stage environments.
CORE STACK:
AWS
Terraform
OpenStack (as a consumer: VMs, networking, storage)
OKD / Kubernetes (OKD is the upstream of OpenShift)
Helm / Helmfile
Ansible
GitLab CI/CD
Linux
Virtual machines and bare-metal servers
Prometheus / VictoriaMetrics / Grafana
ELK
Our dedicated platform teams operate the underlying OpenStack and OKD platforms, while your team owns and operates the workloads running on top of them. Previous OpenStack or OKD expertise is not required: you will not be responsible for building OpenStack or maintaining the OKD control plane, but you should be comfortable deploying, operating, and troubleshooting workloads running on these platforms.
Job Responsibilities
Typical tasks in this role include:
Build and evolve AWS infrastructure with Terraform — extending existing modules and writing new ones — across compute, networking, storage, IAM, databases, and load balancing (EC2, VPC, S3, RDS, ALB/NLB, IAM);
Provision and manage OpenStack virtual machines and the Linux services running on them, as well as workloads running on bare-metal Linux hosts;
Deploy and operate workloads in OKD using Helm and Helmfile, including maintaining charts, values, and templates, and troubleshooting deployments;
Build and improve GitLab CI/CD pipelines for application and infrastructure deployments;
Manage Linux systems with Ansible, including writing new roles and adapting existing ones;
Own observability for your workloads: configure metric collection in Prometheus and VictoriaMetrics, maintain Grafana dashboards, set up and tune alerts, and work with centralized logging in ELK — collection, parsing, and helping teams find and understand issues in application and infrastructure logs;
Work closely with Development and QA teams — supporting production systems as well as the test environments used for day-to-day development, and helping with deployments, environment configuration, infrastructure issues, and release blockers;
Troubleshoot issues across infrastructure, networking, Linux, CI/CD, and application platforms, including problems that span multiple systems;
Automate repetitive operational tasks and take part in infrastructure upgrades, migrations, and improvements.
Review infrastructure code and work with DevOps, Development, QA, and Platform teams on changes that cross team boundaries.
You’ll thrive here if you have
Has strong, recent hands-on AWS experience in large-scale, high-traffic, business-critical production systems;
Has solid experience with Terraform and Infrastructure as Code;
Has practical experience running workloads in Kubernetes-based environments and working with Helm;
Has experience building and maintaining CI/CD pipelines, preferably with GitLab CI;
Has hands-on experience with Ansible, including writing or maintaining roles;
Understands infrastructure networking: TCP/IP, DNS, routing, load balancing, firewalls/security groups, and connectivity troubleshooting;
Has practical experience with metrics and alerting (Prometheus, VictoriaMetrics, Grafana) and centralized logging (ELK);
Can troubleshoot complex problems independently and follow them across multiple layers of the stack;
Is confident with Linux, virtual machines, and production infrastructure, is comfortable working outside fully managed cloud services, and understands what runs underneath the application. Comfortable using Bash, Python, or similar for automation.
Conditions
We know that great talent deserves great conditions, so here's what you can expect when joining us:
EU-based employment contract and a 3-year Cyprus work visa with full support for your relocation and visa processes, including assistance for your family.
EU passport.
Opportunity to obtain an EU passport after 4 years of residence

Interested in the role, but don’t meet every qualification? We encourage you to still apply! At WHOOP, we believe there is much more to a candidate than what is written on paper, and we value character as much as experience. As we continue to build a diverse and inclusive environment, we encourage anyone who is interested in this role to apply.
WHOOP is an Equal Opportunity Employer and participates in E-verify https://www.e-verify.gov/ to determine employment eligibility. It is unlawful in Massachusetts to require or administer a lie detector test as a condition of employment or continued employment. An employer who violates this law shall be subject to criminal penalties and civil liability.
The WHOOP compensation philosophy is designed to attract, motivate, and retain exceptional talent by offering competitive base salaries, meaningful equity, and consistent pay practices that reflect our mission and core values.
At WHOOP, we view total compensation as the combination of base salary, equity, and benefits, with equity serving as a key differentiator that aligns our employees with the long-term success of the company and allows every member of our corporate team to own part of WHOOP and share in the company’s long-term growth and success.
The U.S. base salary range for this full-time position is $175,000 - $215,000. Salary ranges are determined by role, level, and location. Within each range, individual pay is based on factors such as job-related skills, experience, performance, and relevant education or training.
In addition to the base salary, the successful candidate will also receive benefits and a generous equity package.
These ranges may be modified in the future to reflect evolving market conditions and organizational needs. While most offers will typically fall toward the starting point of the range, total compensation will depend on the candidate’s specific qualifications, expertise, and alignment with the role’s requirements.

You’ll work closely with customers and engineering, helping us improve product quality and developer experience based on real-world usage.
This role is ideal for someone who thrives in async, fast-paced environments and is excited about building developer tools that scale to millions.
WHAT YOU’LL BE RESPONSIBLE FOR
In this role, you’ll:
- Investigate and resolve advanced customer issues across Postgres, Auth, RLS, Storage, Realtime, Edge Functions, and client libraries.
- Provide consultative, proactive advice to optimize workloads, avoid common pitfalls, and tailored advice to our most advanced users.
- Reproduce bugs, isolate root causes, propose workarounds, and escalate to engineering with solid repro steps.
- Ask smart, targeted questions that turn incomplete reports into actionable cases.
- Communicate clearly and empathetically with customer users of all levels—especially during high-impact or time-sensitive situations.
- Spot patterns across tickets and recommend improvements to docs, tooling, and the product itself.
- Mentor junior team members and help raise the overall bar for support quality.
YOU MIGHT BE A GOOD FIT IF YOU
- You have 6+ years in technical support, backend engineering, SRE, or similar.
- You know PostgreSQL deeply—autovacuum behavior, WAL growth, long-running transactions, table bloat, and other internals.
- You’re strong in high-performance SQL and query optimization.
- You’re comfortable troubleshooting complex setups, including multi-tenant schema patterns.
- You can debug edge functions and understand distributed system behavior when failures get tricky.
- You’ve handled data migration issues (pg_dump/restore, schema drift, failed migrations) and know how to recover safely.
- You have hands-on experience with cloud hosting providers like AWS.
- You’re comfortable in terminal and Linux environments.
- You thrive in high-volume situations and can form/test assumptions quickly.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS
- Must be a fluent bilingual Japanese/English Speaker
- Must have experience support complex technical products in Japanese with native speakers
- Ideally located in Japan, but location is flexible as long as you can work during Japan business hours.
