Here at Humanoid, we believe in a future where robots amplify human potential. That’s why we’ve set out on a mission to build the world’s most capable, commercially-scalable, and safe humanoid robots. We’re bringing that mission to life with HMND‑01 - our rapidly developed humanoid platform being deployed in real industrial environments - and we’re growing the team to take it even further.
ABOUT THE ROLE
We’re scaling from prototypes to manufacturing, and the process maturity needs to match. This role owns the secure manufacturing pipeline — the procedures, tooling, and controls that take a bare board in an untrusted CM facility and turn it into a cryptographically enrolled, OTA-ready device that our cloud fleet trusts. You’ll be the bridge between our secure boot/firmware teams and the cloud control plane, connecting them at the point of manufacture.
WHAT YOU'LL DO
- Design the secure manufacturing station — Architect the hardware, software, and network stack (HSM, key injection, AWS Private CA) for factory floor provisioning stations. Integrate the secure boot fuse/flashing flow from our secure boot/firmware team.
- Build the provisioning toolchain — Own the automation pipeline that takes a bare device through identity provisioning, enrollment, firmware flashing, calibration, and functional test.
- Bridge device and cloud identity Enroll every device into a registry with correct credentials for OTA, session heartbeating, and deployment tracking.
- Own the End-Of-Line (EOL) test framework — Work with globally distributed teams to define pass/fail criteria for devices leaving the line: sensor calibration, actuator checks, and initial OTA health check.
- Work with contract manufacturers —Translate security requirements into CM-executable procedures; threat-model the factory for key leakage, firmware tampering, and supply chain substitution.
- Maintain chain of custody — Link each physical serial number to its provisioned identity, calibration records, test results, and firmware version at manufacture.
- Collaborate across teams — Work daily with a globally distributed team of firmware, cloud, manufacturing, systems and operational team members.
WHAT WE'RE LOOKING FOR
- 10+ years of experience which includes manufacturing engineering, with a comparable depth of experience developing test tools and frameworks. Plus experience working with networking in a manufacturing environment, and time focused on secure device provisioning and/or secure manufacturing processes. Ideally 3 years at a Staff level or equivalent.
- PKI and device identity — Experience with X.509 certificate lifecycles, mTLS, device authentication and attestation, and managed CA services like AWS Private CA.
- AWS infrastructure — S3, IAM, ECS, KMS, CloudHSM and Secrets Manager for secure provisioning workflows.
- EOL test and calibration — Hands-on experience defining manufacturing test frameworks, experience with hardware test fixtures.
- Scripting and automation — Advanced skills in Python or Bash for developing production-grade provisioning toolchains.
- Advanced skills and understanding of Rust, Bazel, Systemd
- Embedded Linux systems — Experience with NVIDIA Jetson Orin/Thor platforms.
- Secure manufacturing design — Ability to design secure processes for untrusted or semi-trusted offshore CMs and air-gapped station design.
- Experience managing quality gates with contract manufacturers
- Hardware root of trust understanding — General understanding of secure boot chains, TPM/TrustZone, cryptographic key injection, certificate provisioning, and eFuse programming.
WHAT WE OFFER
- Comprehensive health coverage for US‑based employees, including fully paid medical, dental, and vision insurance, with virtual care and employee assistance resources.
- Meaningful time off to rest and recharge: 23 days of PTO (accrued), separate sick leave, and paid company holidays.
- 401(k) retirement plan with employer match.
- Equity included–we believe builders should share in what they build.
- Free daily catered lunch, snacks, and drinks in‑office.
- Collaboration with top‑tier engineers, researchers, and product experts in AI and robotics.
- Freedom to influence the product and own key initiatives.
For this role in California, the expected base salary range is $260,000–$320,000 USD per year; your placement in that range depends on how your experience maps to our internal leveling.

About the job
As a member of our AI research team, you will drive innovation in model compression and efficient deployment for advanced multimodal AI systems, including large language models (LLMs) and vision-language models (VLMs). Your work will focus on reducing model footprint and computational cost while preserving accuracy, enabling high-performance AI to run efficiently across resource-constrained edge devices. You will apply and advance compression techniques such as quantization, knowledge distillation, and pruning to streamline complex multimodal architectures that integrate text, images, and audio.
We expect you to have deep expertise in model compression methods and a strong background in multimodal model architectures. You will adopt a hands-on, research-driven approach to develop, test, and implement novel compression strategies that balance model size, latency, throughput, and accuracy. Your responsibilities include building robust compression pipelines, establishing performance and fidelity metrics, and addressing bottlenecks in production inference. The ultimate goal is to deliver scalable, low-memory, low-latency AI systems on edge devices (i.e., smartphones) that maintain high fidelity and tangible real-world value.
Responsibilities
Break down the key responsibilities in bullet points. It’s helpful to make them actionable and measurable. This could also be grouped into categories for more complex roles.
Apply low-bit quantization to reduce model size and inference latency for generative AI models (LLMs, VLMs, multimodal) while maintaining accuracy and output quality.
Leverage knowledge distillation to transfer capabilities from larger teacher models to smaller student models, enabling efficient multimodal reasoning across text, image, and audio inputs.
Implement pruning techniques to remove redundant parameters and attention heads, reducing computational overhead without sacrificing task performance.
Analyze trade-offs between model efficiency (size, latency, memory) and accuracy across quantization, distillation, and pruning methods; propose improvements based on empirical findings.
Research and apply mixed-precision quantization and other advanced compression strategies (e.g., adaptive pruning schedules, distillation with intermediate feature matching) to optimize the accuracy–performance balance.
Stay current with the latest research in model compression, including emerging techniques for multimodal and generative architectures.
Document methodologies, experiments, and results clearly to support reproducibility, internal collaboration, and stakeholder communication.
Author technical papers and publish findings in top-tier conferences (e.g., NeurIPS, ICML, ICLR, CVPR, ACL, AAAI) to advance the field of model compression for multimodal AI.
List the qualifications, certifications, and experience needed for the role. You can split this into mandatory and preferred sections if needed.
A degree in Computer Science or related field. Ideally PhD in NLP, Machine Learning, or a related field, complemented by a solid track record in AI R&D (with good publications in A* conferences).
Experience with PyTorch deep learning frameworks or equivalent frameworks
Hands-on experience with model quantization including both Quantization-Aware Training (QAT) and Post-Training Quantization (PTQ).
Research and hands-on experience with knowledge distillation for compressing large models into smaller, efficient ones.
Research and hands-on experience with model pruning for compressing large models into smaller, efficient ones.
Solid understanding of neural network architectures and training processes – Including transformers (e.g., LLMs, VLMs), backpropagation, optimization, and fine-tuning techniques.
Familiarity with C++ is a plus (especially for implementing low-level quantization kernels or inference optimizations).
