Perplexity serves hundreds of millions of queries a month, and every one of them fans out into multiple AI inference requests running in real time. Behind that sits a large GPU fleet spread across several cloud providers. Today, our inference engineers and researchers build models while also managing networking, securing capacity, and operating the underlying GPU clusters, responsibilities we want a dedicated platform team to own. Your job is to take ownership of that infrastructure and hide its complexity behind a unified, self-serve platform for running training and inference workloads.
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Build a self-serve compute platform. Design and own the systems that let inference engineers and researchers launch training jobs and operate inference services without managing GPU provisioning, cluster configuration, or provider-specific infrastructure.
- Operate the GPU fleet. Own provisioning, lifecycle management, reliability, and capacity integration across providers, giving teams a consistent way to use compute regardless of where it runs.
- Solve for GPU scarcity. Build the scheduling and placement logic that finds available capacity across providers, packs it efficiently, and gets the right workload onto the right hardware under real constraints.
- Support two very different workloads. Keep long-running distributed training jobs healthy while simultaneously guaranteeing the availability and latency of production inference services on the same fleet.
- Own the Kubernetes for GPU orchestration. Write the operators and CRDs, and manage many clusters across providers so the platform behaves the same everywhere we run.
- Make failure boring. Build the fault tolerance, autoscaling, and observability that keep the fleet utilized and let workloads survive node loss, provider hiccups, and capacity shifts without human intervention.
- Set technical direction across teams. Partner with inference and cloud infrastructure engineers to turn operational constraints into a coherent platform architecture and roadmap.
QUALIFICATIONS
We expect you to have real depth in most of these:
- Deep Kubernetes experience — custom operators, CRDs, and multi-cluster federation, not just running kubectl apply.
- You've managed GPU clusters at scale: NVIDIA hardware, CUDA, and the networking that makes them fast (InfiniBand or RoCE).
- You've orchestrated compute across multiple clouds (CoreWeave, AWS, GCP, or similar) and understand how different each one really is.
- Strong distributed systems fundamentals: scheduling, resource allocation, and fault tolerance under load.
- You write infrastructure and systems-level code in Go, Rust or C++.
- You've supported both long-running training jobs and high-availability inference services, and you know why they pull infrastructure in opposite directions.
- You own problems end-to-end and do well when the path forward isn't laid out for you.
ADDITIONAL EXPERIENCE WE VALUE
- Inference serving stacks: vLLM, SGLang, or TensorRT-LLM.
- Slurm or other HPC schedulers.
- GPU kernel work in CUDA or Triton — not required, but notable.
- High-speed interconnects: InfiniBand, RoCE, or RDMA in production.
- Observability for ML workloads: Prometheus, Grafana, or Weights & Biases.

How we're different
We believe that the highest-impact AI research will be big science. At Anthropic we work as a single cohesive team on just a few large-scale research efforts. And we value impact — advancing our long-term goals of steerable, trustworthy AI — rather than work on smaller and more specific puzzles. We view AI research as an empirical science, which has as much in common with physics and biology as with traditional efforts in computer science. We're an extremely collaborative group, and we host frequent research discussions to ensure that we are pursuing the highest-impact work at any given time. As such, we greatly value communication skills.
The easiest way to understand our research directions is to read our recent research. This research continues many of the directions our team worked on prior to Anthropic, including: GPT-3, Circuit-Based Interpretability, Multimodal Neurons, Scaling Laws, AI & Compute, Concrete Problems in AI Safety, and Learning from Human Preferences.

HEALTH CAN’T WAIT.
Not for symptoms to get worse. Not for a six‑month appointment. Not for a system to catch up. But that’s exactly how healthcare works today. You wait, until you can’t.
Alan exists to end the wait.
Health is a universal right, and we believe this right can only become real when it’s coupled with prevention. We need to stop treating health as something we repair and start treating it as something we build, every day. It’s not solely a question of willpower. It’s the healthcare system itself that needs to work for everyone, in a sustainable way.
So we are building the new standard in prevention insurance. Alan is the first company that integrates insurance, prevention, and care into a single, acclaimed user experience.
We are on an incredible journey to build a global leading company, with a unique culture https://alan.com/en/careers. We already partner with 40K+ companies of all sizes, serving more than 1M+ members, and have reached €800M+ in ARR.
Prevention as the new norm. That's what we're building with our team of 1000+ people. If it speaks to you: we're hiring across France, Spain, Belgium, and Canada. And beyond.
🚀 WHAT YOU'LL BUILD AND WHO YOU'LL WORK WITH
Every Alan product, in every country, runs on the same backend: events, queues, cache, data shared between components, transactions. More than 200 engineers build on it every day. It carries more than 1 million members today. It must carry 10 million, in more countries, with more regulated health data.
You would join Backend Platform, a new team in our engineering organisation. Our job is to rethink the backend of a fully grown company, while it keeps running. Today almost everything runs in one Python monolith on one database. We are moving it towards big services that scale on their own, one pilot at a time. We build the tools that make this possible, and we set the rules for how Alan builds backends.
This is a rare kind of project. The codebase serves real members and customers every day, and we have the mandate to change how it is built. What we decide now will shape how hundreds of engineers work for years. You will learn a lot, and your work will have a real impact.
The team is small and growing: 3 engineers today, 6 next year. Its mission:
Own the backend building blocks every Alan product depends on, and make them simple enough that product teams use them without needing us.
Your scope
- The events pipeline. How our components and services talk to each other asynchronously: a Postgres outbox, Redis Streams, an S3 archive. It is in production for about 20 components. You make it a product that teams use on their own.
- Data replication between services. A service publishes read-only tables. Other services keep a local, fresh copy and join on it. This replaces slow joins across components.
- Towards big services. The tools to take capabilities out of the monolith: a service template, APIs between services, traces across services, dependency management. We start with a pilot and turn it into a playbook.
- The shared runtime. Queues, cache, the transaction layer. Their limits, their SLOs, their headroom.
- The backend direction. The rules for how we build backends at Alan, written with the other engineering teams.
🛠️ THE STACK
Python, Flask, SQLAlchemy, PostgreSQL, Redis, RQ, Datadog, all in a monorepo. New services are async-first. We deploy daily and believe in distributed ownership: you build it, you own it. You don't need prior Python experience.
⭐ IS IT YOU WE'RE LOOKING FOR?
Experience we value
- 5+ years of backend engineering, with code other teams depend on: libraries, frameworks, pipelines, internal platforms. You ran it in production and owned it.
- Distributed systems as a daily tool: events and messaging (delivery guarantees, ordering, idempotence, retries), data replication, consistency, transactions.
- PostgreSQL in depth: transactions, locks, replication, query plans.
- You have split a monolith or built services, step by step, while production kept running.
- You measure before you optimise, and you set SLOs and alerts for what you own.
- English working proficiency. French is not required.
Mindset we value
- Product mindset. Product teams are your customers. Adoption is how you measure success.
- Enabler. You build things others use on their own, instead of doing the work for them.
- You write to think and align. Short framing docs and decision records are how this team works with the rest of engineering.
- Influence without authority. You get other teams to change how they build, with no reporting line.
- Incremental. One pilot first, then the playbook. No big-bang rewrites.
Strong plus: you worked in a platform team that served product teams · event-driven architecture at scale · CDC or logical replication · async Python (asyncio, FastAPI) · multi-region or data residency · health, payments or other regulated data.
Not required: frontend · Kubernetes and cluster operations · database administration · LLM or AI expertise. Other teams own those.
Mission alignment
- Healthcare technology excites you.
- Leveraging AI to redefine our roles and unlock scalability.
For this opportunity, we are aiming to hire at D level https://medium.com/alan/a-new-iteration-of-our-engineering-career-path-at-alan-f46f7b229b2d or above. These are senior individual-contributor seats. Your leverage comes from technical depth and from how many teams use what you build.
But above all, we are looking for high potential and curiosity: make sure to show us this when you apply! Everything else is a bonus.
🌍 HOW WE WORK
- Location: You must be legally eligible to work in France, Belgium, or Spain.
- Remote work: We offer remote work flexibility, but we value in-person collaboration.
🎯 IMPORTANT NOTE: WE HIRE PEOPLE, NOT ROLES.
If you're excited about this opportunity but don't check every box, we'd love to hear from you. Everyone, no matter how underrepresented, should feel free to apply, as it can only bring learnings or success.
If you identify yourself as a woman: Did you know that research shows women often apply only when meeting 100% of requirements?
Remember, this is just a guide, not a checklist.
We'll be thrilled to receive your application!

About Anthropic
Anthropic’s mission is to create reliable, interpretable, and steerable AI systems. We want AI to be safe and beneficial for our users and for society as a whole. Our team is a quickly growing group of committed researchers, engineers, policy experts, and business leaders working together to build beneficial AI systems.
About Anthropic
Anthropic's mission is to create reliable, interpretable, and steerable AI systems. We want AI to be safe and beneficial for our users and for society as a whole. Our team is a growing group of committed researchers, engineers, policy experts, and business leaders working together to build beneficial AI systems.
About the team
The Integrity and Attestation team's remit is to prove what is running at Anthropic: what code it is, where it came from, and whether the machine underneath it is in a known-good state. We build the systems that cryptographically verify build artifacts, model weights, and machines, from hardware roots of trust through firmware and boot to the credentials a workload receives. We also secure the management plane of our servers. These controls protect our model weights and customer data across cloud providers and bare-metal AI data centers, including sites operated by partners.
We are hiring an Engineering Manager to lead this team. Anthropic is bringing up new compute quickly, across new hardware platforms and new partners, and each one has to meet the same bar. In this role you will set the team's charter, practices, and priorities. You will partner with our infrastructure, data center, and hardware teams, as well as outside vendors, so that integrity is designed in rather than added later. The goal is simple to state: a machine gets secrets and workloads only after it proves it should, and a new site reaches that bar without slowing down compute.
About the role
Own the integrity roadmap: threat model from silicon and firmware up through the operating system and workloads, decide what to build, and deliver it
Be able to reason about the design and implementation of remote attestation, measured and verified boot, hardware roots of trust (TPM, SPDM), machine identity, and the reference values that define known-good
Make attestation the default path, so machines receive credentials and join clusters only after proving their firmware, system software, and security configuration, with no human in the loop
Build provenance for what we deploy: signed build artifacts and model weights, independent verification, and tamper-evident transparency logs
Lead the protection of sensitive data in use and at rest, including encryption and the chokepoints that control access to it
Secure the server management plane across every site: scoped and audited access to baseboard management controllers and management of per-device credentials
Make security repeatable as compute grows, so a new site or hardware platform inherits these controls in hours, not weeks
Join compute bring-up, data center, and hardware teams at design time
Define clear ownership with partner teams: when operations move to another team, your team keeps the security properties and can prove they still hold
Own the integrity evidence for our security goals and compliance: the invariants hold, and you can prove it
Hire, grow, and retain senior security software engineers; own their career development, and set the practices the team runs on as it scales
Who you are
Low ego, high empathy; has built diverse teams and has former reports who would vouch for them.
Experience managing infrastructure or security engineering teams, including hiring, developing, and managing senior and staff engineers
Has grown engineers into staff or lead roles, and experience with performance management
Created and maintained a high performing in hypergrowth environments. Kept a team intact and delivering through reorgs, charter changes, or leadership turnover
Experience owning a security or infrastructure domain end to end: setting multi-year strategy, delivering year-long cross-organizational work with little direction, and answering to executives for its risk and tradeoffs
An appreciation for distributed systems and properties beyond security, including reliability, efficiency, and maintainability
Scaled a team and its systems together through hypergrowth, where last quarter's architecture was already too small
Hands-on engineering in at least one of: platform security, secure boot and firmware, hardware roots of trust, confidential computing, or software supply chain integrity
Threat modeling and risk assessment for systems that span hardware and software, with strong security judgment and pragmatism
Comfortable leading through ambiguity with multiple partner teams and outside vendors, where you don't control the hardware or the schedule
You may be a good fit if you have:
At least 5+ years managing engineering teams and 8+ years hands-on in platform, infrastructure, or security engineering
Built or operated remote attestation, device identity, or fleet-wide boot integrity at production scale
Worked with BMCs, Redfish, GPU or accelerator attestation, or large-scale bare-metal provisioning
Experience with Nitro, SEV-SNP, TDX, or similar confidential computing platforms
Built signing, provenance, or transparency systems such as Sigstore, SLSA, or binary transparency
Designed key management or offline ceremonies for high-value secrets
Worked in high-assurance environments where controls had to be evidenced, not just deployed
Taken infrastructure from zero to one and then to maturity: built the first version where nothing existed, then run and hardened it into a system other teams depend on
Built or rebuilt a hiring loop and held the bar while adding headcount quickly
Pragmatic and steady: cares about unblocking research, product and compute as much as a clean architecture, and brings patience and judgment to opinionated senior engineers
Clear and persuasive communicator in writing and in person
Familiarity with AI security and safety concepts
The annual compensation range for this role is listed below.
For sales roles, the range provided is the role’s On Target Earnings ("OTE") range, meaning that the range includes both the sales commissions/sales bonuses target and annual base salary for the role.
Annual Salary:
$405,000
—
$405,000 USD
Logistics
Minimum education:
Bachelor’s degree or an equivalent combination of education, training, and/or experience
Required field of study:
A field relevant to the role as demonstrated through coursework, training, or professional experience
Minimum years of experience:
Years of experience required will correlate with the internal job level requirements for the position
Location-based hybrid policy:
Currently, we expect all staff to be in one of our offices at least 25% of the time. However, some roles may require more time in our offices.
Visa sponsorship:
We do sponsor visas! However, we aren't able to successfully sponsor visas for every role and every candidate. But if we make you an offer, we will make every reasonable effort to get you a visa, and we retain an immigration lawyer to help with this.
We encourage you to apply even if you do not believe you meet every single qualification.
Not all strong candidates will meet every single qualification as listed. Research shows that people who identify as being from underrepresented groups are more prone to experiencing imposter syndrome and doubting the strength of their candidacy, so we urge you not to exclude yourself prematurely and to submit an application if you're interested in this work. We think AI systems like the ones we're building have enormous social and ethical implications. We think this makes representation even more important, and we strive to include a range of diverse perspectives on our team.
Your safety matters to us.

Come work with us!
Anthropic is a public benefit corporation headquartered in San Francisco. We offer competitive compensation and benefits, optional equity donation matching, generous vacation and parental leave, flexible working hours, and a lovely office space in which to collaborate with colleagues.

About the role
Training and serving frontier AI models requires compute infrastructure at a scale and density that pushes past what conventional data center designs were built to handle. Anthropic's Data Center Infrastructure team is responsible for delivering that physical infrastructure — partnering with build partners, equipment manufacturers, and utilities to stand up facilities that can reliably power some of the largest accelerator clusters in the industry.
As a Data Center Electrical Engineer – Design, you'll own the electrical architecture of our facilities from the utility service entrance through to the rack — substation interface, medium- and high-voltage distribution, on-site generation and storage integration, UPS, switchgear, busway, and rack power. You'll develop and maintain the basis of design, reference architectures, and technical specifications that our build partners and A/E firms design against, and you'll be the point of technical authority when their drawings and calculations come back for review. You'll run the engineering studies — short-circuit, protection coordination, arc flash, load flow, and power quality — and you'll keep the architecture ahead of rapidly increasing rack densities and the unique load characteristics of large-scale ML training.
A central part of this role is speed-to-capacity through prefabrication: you'll shape Anthropic's offsite-manufactured electrical strategy — modular skids, e-houses, and prefabricated power assemblies — and drive its standardization across sites. You'll work closely with colleagues across the infrastructure team, with our hardware and compute teams to translate accelerator requirements into electrical design criteria, and with supply chain to qualify and diversify regional equipment vendors. Expect roughly 10–25% travel for design reviews, partner and vendor meetings, factory witness testing, and site visits to support commissioning and startup.
Responsibilities
Electrical design & engineering
Lead the electrical design of critical data center infrastructure across the US portfolio, including the utility interface and substation, site medium- and high-voltage distribution, generators, UPS, switchgear, transformers, busway, and grounding
Develop and maintain Anthropic's electrical basis of design, reference architectures, and technical specifications for critical power distribution — covering switchgear, UPS systems, PDUs, busway, and rack power delivery — producing designs that meet our reliability and maintainability requirements while staying within budgetary targets
Perform and validate engineering studies — including short-circuit, protection coordination, arc flash, load flow, and power quality analysis — and use the findings to steer topology, redundancy, equipment-selection, and protection-setting decisions
Design and plan data center hall power distribution layouts for newly allocated spaces in coordination with the telecom, mechanical and cooling design
Prefabrication & modular delivery
Drive Anthropic's prefabricated and modular electrical strategy — developing modular skids, e-houses, and prefabricated power assemblies, and partnering with external engineering and manufacturing teams on a productization roadmap that accelerates deployment and reduces onsite labor
Design for offsite manufacture and onsite assembly: define the interfaces between prefabricated components and site-built work, and the electrical interfaces and switchover points for temporary-to-permanent power sequencing
Drive standardization of modular electrical designs across sites to compress deployment timelines while preserving flexibility for site-specific constraints and evolving hardware generations
Partner, vendor & utility coordination
Work with regional vendors and manufacturers to specify and qualify major electrical equipment, and partner with supply chain to build a diversified vendor base that mitigates lead-time and single-source risk
Work with utilities and interconnection/transmission operators (e.g., ISOs/RTOs) to define site utility service and interconnection requirements, and with local authorities having jurisdiction to ensure designs comply with the National Electrical Code (NFPA 70/NEC), NFPA, IEEE, UL/ANSI, and local requirements
Work with Anthropic's hardware and compute teams to translate accelerator power, density, and power-quality requirements into electrical design criteria, and keep the reference architecture aligned with upcoming hardware generations
Present findings and design positions to internal stakeholders, build partners, and operations teams through clear reports and presentations, and defend them under challenge
Design review & quality
Review and approve electrical design packages, calculations, submittals, and shop drawings from build partners and MEP consultants; track clarifications, deviations, and exceptions against the basis of design, and hold the line on capacity, reliability, maintainability, and safety requirements
Perform technical due diligence and design reviews on data center developer and partner projects — evaluating their electrical single-lines, equipment selections, studies, and specifications against Anthropic's reliability, maintainability, and capacity requirements
Define project electrical scope and serve as the design authority on RFIs and field changes that affect design intent during procurement and construction
Support factory acceptance testing, commissioning, and startup — reviewing test procedures and results against design intent, participating on site for key milestones, and closing as-built changes back into the reference design
Manage concurrent projects across multiple geographies

At the scale we build, our campuses are typically served by dedicated high-voltage substations and a medium-voltage distribution network that may also integrate on-site generation and battery energy storage — and the protection, control, and automation layer is what keeps all of it selective, coordinated, and observable.
As a Data Center Substation, Protection & Automation Engineer, you'll own the protection and automation architecture across Anthropic's US portfolio — from the utility point of interconnection (POI) through the HV/MV substation, the MV distribution loop, and down into LV switchgear. You'll develop and maintain our protection philosophy and reference relay settings, run and review the short-circuit, coordination, and arc-flash studies that underpin them, design the substation automation and SCADA architecture, and define how relays and meters integrate into the electrical power monitoring system (EPMS) — giving operators real-time visibility and sequence-of-events data when something trips. You'll also be our technical lead on the protection side of utility interconnection — working relay settings, transfer-trip, and ride-through requirements with transmission owners and ISOs/RTOs.
Protection engineering and substation automation are the core of this role; substation physical design is a strong plus but not a prerequisite — we'd like to hear from protection and P&C engineers who have spent their careers on relays, schemes, and studies even if they haven't owned a substation general arrangement. You'll work closely with colleagues across the infrastructure team, our build partners' A/E firms, relay and switchgear vendors, and utility protection groups. Expect roughly 20–35% travel for witnessing factory acceptance and relay testing, and supporting site energization and commissioning.
Responsibilities
Protection engineering
Own Anthropic's protection philosophy and basis of design across the electrical system — HV substation, MV distribution, generator and energy-storage interties, and LV switchgear — and maintain the reference relay settings and protection one-line templates our build partners design against
Specify protective relays and develop relay settings for transformer, feeder, bus, generator, motor, and arc-flash protection applications, working across major platforms (e.g., SEL, GE Multilin, ABB, Siemens, Schneider)
Perform and critically review short-circuit, protective-device coordination, and arc-flash studies; use findings to steer equipment selection, settings, and incident-energy mitigation
Implement automatic transfer, load-shed, and restoration schemes in protection and automation logic, and make sure they stay secure and coordinated under every credible contingency
Review protection and control design packages, relay settings calculations, and coordination studies from build partners and A/E firms against our basis of design, and drive closure on deviations and exceptions
Substation automation & SCADA
Design the substation automation architecture for each site — IEC 61850 station and process bus, GOOSE messaging, RTUs/gateways, local HMI, sequence-of-events recording, and time synchronization — and drive standardization of that architecture across the portfolio
Integrate protective relays, meters, and switchgear controls into the electrical power monitoring system (EPMS) and substation SCADA; define electrical points lists and event/waveform capture, applying the site alarm and HMI standards
Help define the network topology, redundancy, and cybersecurity boundaries between substation automation, EPMS, and the facility BMS/DCIM layer, and how protection events surface to operations
Evaluate and qualify relay, RTU, gateway, and EPMS platforms on technical merit, and work with supply chain to build a diversified vendor base that mitigates lead-time and single-source risk
Substation design & utility interface
Review HV/MV substation design packages from build partners — single-line and three-line diagrams, bus configuration, general arrangement, equipment specifications, grounding-grid design, and control-building layout — and confirm the protection and control design is buildable and maintainable
Work with local utilities, transmission owners, and ISOs/RTOs on interconnection protection requirements — relay settings submittals, transfer-trip and communications-assisted schemes, POI study review, and protection settings that satisfy ride-through and grid-code requirements
Review the protection and control interface for on-site generation and battery energy storage interconnections, including anti-islanding, synchronizing, and intertie protection
Support NERC PRC compliance for applicable facilities — settings documentation, misoperation analysis, and periodic maintenance and testing basis
Testing, commissioning & standards
Develop relay test plans and factory and site acceptance test procedures for protection and automation systems, and witness FAT, relay secondary-injection testing, GOOSE messaging and end-to-end scheme testing, and integrated systems testing
Review the protection and control steps of energization and switching methods of procedure (MOPs), support first-energization of substations and MV distribution, and resolve protection and control issues found in the field
Lead root-cause analysis of protection operations and misoperations using relay event records, sequence-of-events data, and disturbance records, and feed findings back into settings and standards
Build and continuously improve Anthropic's internal protection and automation standards — settings templates, scheme logic libraries, test procedures, and commissioning checklists — so each new site starts from a proven baseline
You may be a good fit if you
Have 10+ years of experience in power system protection engineering, substation automation, or substation design for utility, heavy-industrial, or mission-critical facilities
Hold a bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or a closely related field, or have equivalent practical experience; Professional Engineer (PE) licensure is valued but not required
Have deep, hands-on expertise applying and setting protective relays for transformers, feeders, buses, generators, and switchgear, and are fluent in at least one major relay platform (e.g., SEL, GE Multilin, ABB, Siemens)
Are fluent in short-circuit, protective-device coordination, and arc-flash analysis and comfortable running or critically reviewing studies in tools such as SKM, ETAP, EasyPower, ASPEN, or CAPE
Have hands-on experience integrating protective relays into substation automation or SCADA systems using protocols such as DNP3, Modbus, or IEC 61850, and understand RTU/gateway and sequence-of-events architecture
Have worked on utility interconnection protection — relay settings submittals, transfer-trip or communications-assisted schemes, or point-of-interconnection protection requirements — from either the utility or the customer side
Can read, interpret, and mark up single-line and three-line diagrams, AC and DC schematics, relay panel drawings, and wiring diagrams with confidence
Have developed relay test plans and witnessed factory acceptance testing, secondary-injection testing, or field commissioning of protection and control systems
Are familiar with the codes and standards that govern protection and substation work — such as the IEEE C37 series, IEEE 1584, NFPA 70/70E, and (for utility-connected or bulk-electric-system facilities) NERC PRC reliability standards
Communicate clearly with both technical peers and non-specialist stakeholders, and are results-oriented, with a bias toward practical solutions and a willingness to pick up work outside your core remit when the team needs it
Strong candidates may also have
HV/MV substation physical design experience — general arrangement, bus configuration, power transformer and HV breaker specification, grounding-grid design per IEEE 80, insulation coordination, and control-building layout
Experience with protection and control for on-site generation (gas turbines, reciprocating engines, fuel cells) and battery energy storage systems, including anti-islanding, synchronizing, and microgrid transfer schemes
Background in data center, hyperscaler, or other high-availability electrical distribution, and familiarity with critical-power topologies (2N, N+1, distributed redundant)
Experience owning NERC PRC compliance evidence for a generation or transmission asset — settings basis documentation, misoperation reporting, and PRC-005 maintenance programs
Proficiency with vendor relay engineering tools such as SEL AcSELerator, GE EnerVista, ABB PCM600, or Siemens DIGSI, and with IEC 61850 system configuration tools
Designed IEC 61850 station- or process-bus systems with GOOSE-based protection or interlocking schemes
Prior work at a utility, relay or switchgear manufacturer, protection-engineering consultancy, or hyperscaler serving large-load interconnections

About the role
Training and serving frontier AI models requires compute infrastructure at a scale and density that pushes past what conventional data center designs were built to handle. The loads involved are large enough — and arrive fast enough — that utility supply alone often can't meet the need on the timeline required, and the step-load behavior of large accelerator clusters creates power-quality and ride-through demands that conventional backup-generation designs weren't built for. Anthropic's Data Center Infrastructure team is responsible for solving that problem: delivering facilities that can be energized early, ride through grid disturbances, and present a well-behaved load at the point of interconnection (POI).
As a Data Center Power Generation & Microgrids Engineer, you'll own the behind-the-meter generation and storage architecture for Anthropic's data center portfolio. That means the on-site generation fleet — reciprocating engine gensets, gas turbines, fuel cells — and the battery energy storage systems that buffer load steps and provide ride-through. It means the microgrid layer that ties them together: islanding and resynchronization, black-start, load-shedding, and generation dispatch. And it means the grid side: interconnection studies and agreements, IEEE 1547/2800 compliance, and power quality at the point of interconnection. You'll also own our temporary- and bridging-generation strategies — the plans that let a site energize and start serving load before permanent utility service is available, and transition cleanly once it is.
This is a deeply cross-functional role. You'll work closely with colleagues across the infrastructure team on where and how generation and storage tie into the site electrical distribution, controls, and SCADA, and with our hardware and compute teams to understand the load characteristics you're designing against. You'll be Anthropic's technical counterpart to on-site generation providers, BESS integrators, utilities, and ISOs/RTOs. Expect roughly 20–35% travel for design reviews, factory witness testing, and site startup.
Responsibilities
On-site generation engineering
Own Anthropic's behind-the-meter generation architecture across the portfolio — prime-mover selection and sizing (reciprocating engines, gas turbines, fuel cells), paralleling topology, redundancy, fuel systems, and emissions controls — and maintain the generation basis of design and technical specifications that build partners and generation providers design against
Set the day-one vs. day-N plant sizing and expansion strategy — what the plant needs on day one so it can be expanded or augmented later, and how to add units, storage, or a grid tie to a system already running
Characterize the data center load for external generation partners — step changes, ramps, oscillation, fault behavior, and non-IT load — so providers can size and tune their plant against the real duty
Model generation response against the load profile of large-scale ML training — step-load acceptance, block loading, transient frequency and voltage response, load rejection — and set the acceptance criteria (e.g., per ISO 8528-5) that generation packages are tested against
Develop temporary- and bridging-generation strategies that deliver early site energization ahead of permanent utility service, including the sequencing, protection, and controls changes needed to transition from temporary to permanent power without stranding equipment or capacity
Ensure generation designs meet NFPA 37, NFPA 110 where the plant provides emergency or legally required standby power, fuel-gas and fuel-storage codes (e.g., NFPA 54, NFPA 30), and applicable emissions requirements, and coordinate with environmental and permitting counterparts on the technical inputs to air permits
Energy storage & microgrid architecture
Size and specify battery energy storage systems for ride-through, step-load buffering, and power-quality support — including cell chemistry and enclosure selection, inverter selection (grid-forming vs. grid-following), UL 9540 listing, UL 9540A large-scale fire test data, and NFPA 855 installation requirements — and own the thermal and fire-protection interfaces
Define the site microgrid topology and operating modes — grid-parallel, islanded, and black-start — and the transition logic between them, including load-shedding schemes, resynchronization criteria, and the conditions under which the site separates from and reconnects to the utility
Specify the functional requirements for the microgrid controller — generation dispatch, set-point coordination across rotating and inverter-based sources, mode management — and drive its implementation, testing, and integration into site SCADA and the electrical power monitoring system (EPMS)
Help define the protection and control requirements for generation and storage sources so that interconnection protection, anti-islanding, and source-transfer schemes are consistent from the generator terminals through the point of interconnection
Grid interconnection & power quality
Lead the technical side of utility interconnection for sites with on-site generation or storage — interconnection applications, studies, and agreements, ISO/RTO processes, IEEE 1547/2800 compliance, and interconnection protection
Own power quality at the point of interconnection — flicker per IEEE 1453, harmonics per IEEE 519, voltage regulation, reactive-power and power-factor requirements — and design the generation, storage, and filtering mitigations needed to keep the site within its interconnection limits under real training-load behavior
Run or critically review the power-system studies that support interconnection and microgrid design — load flow, short-circuit contribution from rotating and inverter-based sources, transient stability, motor-starting and step-load studies, and electromagnetic-transient studies where inverter controls matter
Vendor diligence & delivery
Lead technical due diligence on on-site generation providers, BESS integrators, and microgrid-controller vendors — evaluating equipment and controls on engineering merit, stress-testing performance and availability guarantees, and reviewing proposed architectures against Anthropic's basis of design
Define the technical performance terms in energy-services agreements with on-site generation providers — availability, power quality, ramp, and ride-through, each with a definition, meter, test protocol, and acceptance criteria — working with energy commercial and legal counterparts
Review and disposition design packages, submittals, shop drawings, and deviation requests from generation providers and their EPCs, and hold partners to Anthropic's reliability and maintainability requirements
Support commissioning of generation, storage, and microgrid systems — witnessing factory and site acceptance tests, defining and observing integrated systems tests (islanding, resynchronization, black-start, load-step), and resolving field issues against design intent
Manage concurrent generation and microgrid scopes across multiple sites, and contribute to the continuous improvement of Anthropic's generation and interconnection design standards as the portfolio and the technology both evolve
You may be a good fit if you
Have 10+ years of engineering experience in power generation, microgrids, battery energy storage, or utility interconnection, with substantial time spent on on-site or distributed generation for mission-critical, data center, or large industrial loads, and deep hands-on delivery experience in at least one of these areas (generation, storage, microgrids, or interconnection)
Have deep hands-on experience with one or more generation technologies — reciprocating engine gensets (diesel and natural gas), gas turbines, or fuel cells — including sizing, paralleling, fuel systems, and emissions controls
Understand the thermal generation asset classes — reciprocating engines across the size range (sub-MW through 10–20 MW units), small- and medium-frame combustion turbines, and combined cycles — and how each responds to fast load changes and holds stable islanded operation
Understand battery energy storage sizing for a defined duty (ride-through, load-step buffering, peak shaving), inverter selection (grid-forming vs. grid-following), UL 9540 listing, UL 9540A test data, and NFPA 855 installation requirements
Understand microgrid architecture end to end — islanding detection and transition, resynchronization, black-start, load-shedding, and generation dispatch
Are fluent in interconnection standards and processes — IEEE 1547, IEEE 2800, utility interconnection requirements, and ISO/RTO study and queue processes
Are comfortable running or critically reviewing power-system studies — load flow, short-circuit, transient stability, and power quality — in tools such as ETAP, SKM, PSS®E, PSCAD, or EasyPower
Hold a bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Power Engineering, or a closely related field, or have equivalent practical experience; Professional Engineer (PE) licensure is valued but not required
Have worked directly with generation OEMs, BESS integrators, generation-as-a-service providers, or utilities, and can evaluate equipment and proposals on technical merit rather than datasheet claims
Communicate clearly with technical peers, utilities, regulators, and non-specialist stakeholders, and are results-oriented with a bias toward practical solutions and a willingness to pick up work outside your core remit when the team needs it
Strong candidates may also have
Designed or delivered battery energy storage systems at MW scale
Specified or commissioned a microgrid controller for a site that can island and resynchronize
Taken at least one large load or generation interconnection from application through agreement
HV/MV substation design experience — main one-line development, equipment specification, grounding, and layout — since on-site generation and storage tie in at the substation and the two scopes are tightly coupled
A protection-engineering background covering generation and interconnection protection — relay selection and settings, anti-islanding schemes, and coordination between on-site sources and utility protection
Experience integrating renewable generation (solar PV, wind) with storage into hybrid behind-the-meter plants
Experience on the technical side of air permitting for stationary generation (e.g., Title V, NSR/PSD, or state equivalents) and emissions-control equipment selection
Electromagnetic-transient (EMT) modeling experience in PSCAD or EMTP for inverter-based resource and microgrid-transition studies
Direct experience with data center, hyperscaler, or other large-campus microgrids, or at a generation provider, BESS integrator, or developer serving those customers
A track record of authoring generation or interconnection reference designs or standards that were adopted across multiple sites or by external partners
