WHO WE ARE
Notion is the collaborative AI workspace where teams and agents think together https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vkpYpWfEK5s. We're building one place where your knowledge, projects, meetings, and AI tools live side by side, so work is faster, clearer, and less fragmented. Millions of individuals, small teams, and large companies run their work on Notion.
Notinos (our employees) are customer zero in bringing this future of work to life. We care about craft, building things that last, and the belief that great work is still fundamentally human. Our goal isn’t to ship the next feature. Each and every team of Notinos is working to set the standard for how humans work together in the AI era. From building a business’s system of record to making and managing AI agents to automating away the busy work, we care deeply about giving our customers more time for their life’s work.
ABOUT THE ROLE
As a Manager of Forward Deployed Engineering on Notion’s Services team, you will lead a team responsible for the hands-on technical delivery of our most complex customer engagements. Your team will design, build, and deploy production-ready solutions that help enterprise customers integrate Notion as the operating layer for their business.
You will combine people leadership, technical judgment, and customer-facing delivery. You will coach Forward Deployed Engineers through discovery, architecture, implementation, and launch while remaining close enough to the work to guide difficult technical decisions, unblock delivery, and build trust with senior customer stakeholders.
The team’s work includes custom code, production-grade agents and AI workflows using MCP, Agent APIs, and Notion’s automation and execution infrastructure, as well as integrations, data pipelines, enterprise migrations, and complex challenges involving scale, permissions, and governance.
You will help establish how Services delivers complex technical implementations across EMEA. This includes building a high-performing team, improving delivery standards and reusable technical assets, partnering with Sales, Product, CX, and Engineering, and turning lessons from customer deployments into product and platform improvements.
WHAT YOU'LL ACHIEVE
- Lead, coach, and develop a team of Forward Deployed Engineers delivering complex enterprise customer engagements across EMEA.
- Create a high-performance team environment with clear expectations, strong technical standards, effective feedback, and meaningful career development.
- Own the quality and outcomes of engagements from technical discovery and requirements gathering through solution design, implementation, launch, and handover.
- Act as a trusted technical and delivery advisor to customer engineering, IT, security, and business leaders, helping them make informed architectural decisions and deepen their use of Notion.
- Guide the design, build, and operation of custom agents, integrations, automations, and data pipelines that connect Notion with customers’ systems and workflows.
- Oversee large-scale content and data migrations, including discovery, scoping, data modeling, transformation logic, validation, cutover, and post-migration optimization.
- Review technical designs and implementation plans, identify delivery risks early, and step in directly when an engagement requires senior technical leadership.
- Partner with Sales and Services leaders on qualification, feasibility, scoping, effort estimation, staffing, and delivery planning for strategic opportunities.
- Balance customer priorities, team capacity, and technical complexity to make sound staffing and sequencing decisions.
- Help define and scale the operating model for Forward Deployed Engineering, including hiring, onboarding, delivery methodologies, quality reviews, documentation, and engineering best practices.
SKILLS YOU'LL NEED TO BRING
- 8+ years of experience in forward deployed engineering, solutions engineering, professional services, customer engineering, software engineering, or a similar hands-on technical role.
- 2+ years of experience managing, coaching, or leading engineers responsible for customer-facing technical delivery.
- A strong track record of hiring, developing, and retaining high-performing technical teams.
- Proficiency in at least one programming language such as Java, JavaScript, Node.js, SQL, or Python, with the technical depth to review production-quality code and guide implementation decisions.
- Hands-on experience with APIs, integrations, authentication, data transformation, and production systems.
- Experience leading technical discovery, assessing feasibility, identifying risks, scoping work, estimating effort, and translating ambiguous requirements into executable plans.
- Strong architectural judgment and debugging skills, with the ability to isolate root causes across code, APIs, permissions, integrations, data quality, automation logic, system limits, and customer-specific environments.
- Demonstrated success managing multiple complex customer engagements while maintaining quality, team health, and clear stakeholder communication.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to influence technical and business audiences from practitioners through executive stakeholders.
- A customer- and outcomes-oriented approach, with sound judgment about when to standardize, when to customize, and how to manage tradeoffs.
NICE TO HAVES
- Experience building or scaling a Forward Deployed Engineering, professional services, or customer engineering function in a startup or high-growth environment.
- Experience deploying AI agents in complex coding or business workflows.
- Experience designing or implementing AI-powered workflows involving MCP, APIs, LLM applications, prompt engineering, retrieval or RAG systems, or workflow orchestration.
- Experience with ETL or ELT workflows, schema mapping, validation scripts, and large-scale content or data migration tooling.
- Experience partnering with product and engineering teams to influence roadmaps or architectural decisions based on customer implementation needs.
- Experience supporting pre-sales and early engagement phases, including technical discovery, migration scoping, feasibility analysis, effort estimation, prototypes, and custom scripts.
- Experience establishing technical delivery standards, quality review processes, discovery methodologies, or internal engineering tooling from the ground up.
- A strong track record of successful enterprise implementations across multiple industries or regions.

A NOTE ON AI
You don’t need deep AI expertise for every role, but we do expect every Notino to be intellectually curious, drawn to tinkering and discovery, and excited to use AI as a real collaborator in their work. For some roles, AI fluency is a core requirement — when that’s the case, we'll say so explicitly in the qualifications. People who thrive here don’t treat AI as a novelty. They use it to think better, and make their work easier for others to build on.

What you’ll be part of
Garner is on a mission to transform the U.S. healthcare system — and we’re the only proven player doing exactly that. We partner with employers to redesign how healthcare works: applying 550+ proprietary clinical metrics across 80+ specialties to a dataset of 320M+ patients to identify the best-performing doctors, then using compelling incentives to steer members to the care that helps them get healthier, faster.
The result is a rare “win win” — better care and lower costs for both members and employers. In just five years, our work has helped over 2.5 million people access higher-quality care and saved $1B in healthcare costs. We recently raised our Series E and have doubled five years running. If you've ever wanted your work to solve a problem that touches every person in this country, this is the opportunity to do exactly that. We are responsible for upgrading and maintaining those clusters at scale, building the internal tooling that makes it possible, and being the last line of defense when something doesn't go according to plan.
ABOUT THE ROLE
This role is an equal split between operational execution and software development. You are responsible for the operational side: coordinating and running upgrades, dealing with edge cases that don't fit the happy path, and keeping tens of thousands of clusters healthy in production. At the same time, you are building and constantly improving the systems that make the next rollout safer and more automated than the last. If you find satisfaction in both writing the playbook and executing it, including the messy parts, this role is for you.
WHAT YOU'LL DO
- Plan and execute rolling upgrades across tens of thousands of ClickHouse clusters, ensuring safety, correctness, and minimal customer impact
- Own the full release pipeline: from pre-upgrade validation and staged rollouts to post-upgrade monitoring and incident response
- Investigate and resolve production issues as part of a regular on-call rotation, including snowflake clusters and edge cases that automation can't yet handle
- Build and improve the internal tooling and automation that makes large-scale database operations reliable and repeatable
- Work closely with the core database and cloud infrastructure teams to identify operational pain points and turn them into solved problems
- Support and educate other engineering teams using our internal tools
ABOUT YOU
- 5+ years of experience operating stateful distributed systems in production, such as databases, message queues, or storage systems
- Hands-on experience running upgrades or maintenance operations on live production data stores, at scale
- Strong production debugging skills; you are comfortable digging into unfamiliar systems under pressure
- Experience with cloud infrastructure (AWS, Azure, or GCP) and Kubernetes
- Software development experience in Go (or strong experience in another language and genuine willingness to learn)
- Experience with ClickHouse preferred (as a user, operator or contributor)

An overview of this role
As a Senior Backend Engineer with the
Database Excellence group
, you'll build and evolve the data frameworks and tooling that keep GitLab's application datastores scalable, healthy, and safe across both GitLab.com and thousands of self-managed instances. A primary focus for this role is building proactive data growth controls for GitLab.com, including retention and lifecycle management frameworks, enforcement of retention policies at schema-change time, and tooling that keeps database growth sustainable as AI-driven development accelerates how quickly data accumulates. You'll help teams across GitLab reason confidently about data architecture, placement, and lifecycle management, while proactively identifying saturation points in our GitLab.com infrastructure and driving corrective actions with partner teams. With the team's recent move into the Data Engineering organization, you'll also shape new scalability and data health features for self-managed customers, working hands-on with PostgreSQL and Ruby on Rails in a fully remote, highly collaborative environment.
Some examples of our projects:
Data Growth Controls (retention enforcement and data lifecycle management)
SQL Traffic Replay Tooling
Background Operations Framework
What you'll do
Develop and iterate backend features and data frameworks that make it safe and efficient for GitLab teams to work with data at scale across SaaS and self-managed deployments.
Design and build data retention and lifecycle management frameworks, including retention policy enforcement, bulk data removal tooling, and automated identification of tables that need retention policies.
Build shift-left guardrails, such as static analysis checks and schema-change-time enforcement, that catch unsustainable data growth patterns before they reach production.
Collaborate closely with product management, UX, frontend, infrastructure, software delivery, and analytics teams to design and ship high-performing solutions
Review and improve database-related changes from other engineers and community contributors, ensuring data integrity, safety, and performance across all deployment scenarios.
Design, build, and maintain tooling such as SQL traffic replay and background operations frameworks to proactively surface and address scalability and performance issues.
Research, design, and implement improvements to data retention and lifecycle management, database performance, scalability, and data health, including areas like soft delete strategies and database migration testing.
Document database best practices, patterns to avoid, and data architecture guidance to enable developers to make informed decisions.
Develop proactive tooling and guardrails that help developers detect and remediate potential performance and data issues early in the development lifecycle.
What you'll bring
Professional software engineering experience working with PostgreSQL in large, complex production environments, including high availability solutions with automatic failover and zero-downtime data migrations as well as managing large or fast-growing datasets through approaches such as data retention, archiving, partitioning, or lifecycle management.
Proficiency with Ruby on Rails or another Ruby framework, including designing, implementing, and reviewing backend features.
Ability to reason about software design, algorithms, and performance trade-offs at a system level.
Strong written communication skills and comfort working asynchronously in an all-remote, distributed team.
Self-directed work style with effective organizational skills and the ability to manage priorities as a "manager of one".
Alignment with GitLab's values, including transparency, collaboration, inclusion, and contribution to open source.
Openness to learning and applying new tools and approaches, including transferable experience from related data, infrastructure, or developer tooling domains.
Willingness to participate in our
tier 2 dabase on-call rotation
in your time zone.
The
Database Excellence Group
is a remote, agile backend team that builds and maintains the frameworks, patterns, and tooling that enable GitLab teams to work confidently with data at scale across all application datastores. As part of the broader Data Engineering organization, we focus on data scalability, health, and developer enablement for both GitLab.com and thousands of self-managed deployments, collaborating closely with infrastructure, software delivery, and analytics stages to ensure data changes are safe, performant, and compatible across diverse environments. We are independent, self-organized contributors, and we collaborate asynchronously across regions. We are currently expanding our mission from proactively identifying and addressing saturation points in GitLab.com infrastructure to also delivering scalability features and data health initiatives to self-managed customers.
