About Backblaze
Backblaze is the object storage leader in the open cloud movement, fueling customer success with cloud storage built purposefully to unlock budgets, unburden administrators, and unleash innovators. Together with our partners, we’re helping customers break free from the restrictive, overpriced legacy solutions that hold them back, and blaze forward with the full power of the open cloud in their hands.
Founded in 2007, we scaled the business with less than $3 million in outside funding until 2021, when we did a traditional IPO on the Nasdaq stock exchange. Today, Backblaze generates over $100m in revenue and is the leading specialized storage cloud - managing over three billion gigabytes of data storage for 500K+ customers in 175+ countries, including businesses, developers, IT professionals, and individuals.
Want to know what you’ll be doing?
You will work on our data infrastructure platform which supports the B2 Object Storage and Computer Backup products, responsible for the data infrastructure that everything runs on. You will help improve automation, observability and stability for durability, increase throughput, and drive architectural changes to support the long term requirements of our service.
Responsibilities:
Design and build automation frameworks that let other engineers provision, configure, and repair fleet infrastructure themselves
Design and extend the observability stack (metrics, logs, traces, alerts) that tells us whether the storage platform is healthy and where it is degrading
Build reporting, dashboards, and visualizations that give engineering and leadership a clear view into fleet health, capacity, and operational trends
Build system health tooling that detects failing hardware, drifting configuration, and capacity risk before they turn into incidents
Lead technical design discussions and produce clear design documents for changes that span multiple services and teams
Drive the implementation of large features from design through rollout, including the migration and backfill work that real systems require
Partner with the on-call rotation to turn recurring toil and incident findings into automation and better signal
The Right Fit:
7+ years of backend development in an enterprise environment, working in an object-oriented or systems language (Java, Rust, C++, C#, Go, or similar)
Experience designing automation frameworks or platforms that other engineers build on
Experience building large scale software systems running on thousands of servers
Experience building automation or tooling that other engineers depend on daily, whether internal platform services, operational tooling, or a deployment and configuration pipeline
Working knowledge of an observability stack (Prometheus, Grafana, OpenTelemetry, ELK, Datadog, or equivalent), including instrumenting a service and designing alerts people trust
Strong Linux fundamentals and comfort operating in a bare-metal or hybrid environment rather than a fully managed cloud
Professional experience incorporating AI-assisted development tools (Gemini, Cursor, Claude Code, or similar)
Comfortable with all aspects of the software development lifecycle, including design, implementation, testing, and rollout
Exhibits curiosity and seeks to understand before offering solutions
Communicates proactively in a remote environment by keeping the team informed, surfacing blockers early, and moving work forward
Applies analytical thinking to ambiguous problems
Bonus points for:
Proficiency in Java
Experience with configuration management or infrastructure-as-code tooling (Ansible, Salt, Puppet, Chef, Terraform)
Experience designing SLOs and error budgets, or reducing alert noise on a fleet running at scale
Experience with time-series databases and query languages such as PromQL
Experience automating hardware lifecycle work: burn-in, failure detection, drive replacement, decommissioning
Experience with discovering and implementing performance improvements, including CPU and IO
Understanding of Linux internals and file systems
Familiarity with hard drive performance and optimization, including host-managed SMR
Experience building and interpreting models, dashboards, or reports

THE ROLE & TEAM
As GM, Legal - Global Employment, you will own how Xero supports its people and manages employment risk across a global technology business. You are the senior strategic legal partner to PX (our people experience organisation) and a trusted adviser to Xero's executive leadership team on workforce strategy, organisational change, and complex employment matters. You bring sound judgement to the highest-impact issues, while setting the global frameworks, standards, and tools that let the wider business manage routine matters with confidence and consistency.
This is a functional leadership role with no direct reports, suited to someone who leads through expertise, influence, and delivery rather than headcount. You will set the direction for global employment legal support, work closely with regional Legal teams and other REAL (Risk, Ethics, Advocacy and Legal) specialists, and personally take on the matters that call for deep experience and judgement. You will also partner with Employee Relations on the legal dimensions of sensitive investigations and employee matters, complementing their operational expertise with strategic legal advice.
This role reports to the SVP/EGM Legal and can be based in San Mateo, Melbourne or Sydney.
WHAT YOU'LL DO
- Partner with PX leadership and senior business leaders on workforce strategy, organisational design, restructures, reward, senior employee matters and cross-border initiatives.
- Provide clear, practical advice on global employment and labour law, including investigations, performance management, discrimination and harassment, contracts, policies, disputes and regulatory matters.
- Set and own Xero's global employment legal strategy, risk framework, standards, escalation paths, playbooks and self-service resources.
- Partner with regional Legal GMs on routine employment matters and ensure consistent, coordinated advice across jurisdictions.
- Lead complex employment disputes, claims, regulatory inquiries and sensitive investigations.
- Support the employment aspects of M&A, integrations and major business change.
- Manage external employment counsel and drive proportionate, cost-effective use of external advice.
- Build training, tools and AI-enabled resources that help PX and leaders manage routine matters confidently.
- Work collaboratively with other members of the REAL team to bring the right expertise together on global workforce matters.
SUCCESS LOOKS LIKE
- PX and senior leaders see you as a trusted strategic partner on workforce strategy and change.
- Xero has clear, scalable and practical global employment frameworks.
- Complex employment risks are identified early and managed consistently.
- Legal support is technology-enabled, using AI tools and self-service modalities where appropriate.
- External counsel is used strategically, with stronger internal capability and better cost control.
WHAT YOU'LL BRING
Essential
- Substantial international employment experience and proven experience supporting labour and employment in a global organisation, advising across multiple jurisdictions and operating effectively across regions and time zones.
- Experience in New Zealand, Australia, the United States and the United Kingdom is highly desirable.
- Deep expertise in global employment and labour law, including complex investigations, disputes, restructures and workforce strategy.
- Experience directing others’ work without direct reports, and influencing without formal authority.
- A track record of advising senior PX/HR leaders and business executives as a strategic partner.
- Strong judgement, commercial awareness and the ability to explain complex issues in plain language.
- Experience managing external employment counsel and building scalable legal processes and resources.
- The ability to influence without formal authority, and to roll up your sleeves and do the work personally.
Strongly preferred
- Breadth beyond employment law, such as litigation, transactional work or corporate governance. You are a T-shaped generalist, able to step into work outside your core area.
- Experience in a mid-market technology company of a similar size to Xero, or another fast-moving global business.
- An interest in using data, technology and AI to improve legal support.
WHERE AND HOW YOU CAN WORK
This role can be based in San Mateo, California, Melbourne or Sydney. This role is based in Sydney or Melbourne with a flexible hybrid working setup, spending 1 to 2 days per week in the local office to connect and collaborate.

Key responsibilities
Own lifecycle and retention strategy across email, SMS, subscription, and other customer touchpoints based on business needs.
Analyze customer, campaign, retention, and revenue data to identify opportunities and determine what should be tested or optimized.

Build and optimize lifecycle programs, including campaigns, automated flows, onboarding, post-purchase, winback, cancellation/save journeys, and other retention initiatives.
Translate data and customer behavior into clear strategic recommendations and actionable plans.
Own performance against key business outcomes such as revenue, retention, customer lifetime value, subscription take rate, churn, or lifecycle program performance.

5+ years of experience in lifecycle marketing, retention marketing, CRM, growth marketing, email/SMS marketing, subscription growth, or a closely related field.
Strong understanding of DTC/ecommerce, consumer, subscription, or digital businesses and how customer retention contributes to revenue and profitability.
Proven experience using data to make strategic marketing or growth decisions rather than simply executing predefined campaigns.
Strong experience with lifecycle marketing platforms such as Klaviyo or comparable CRM/marketing automation tools.
Hands-on understanding of customer segmentation, automated journeys/flows, retention programs, experimentation, and performance optimization.
Experience owning measurable business outcomes such as revenue, retention, churn, LTV, conversion, subscription growth, or lifecycle performance.

Strong written and verbal English communication skills suitable for client-facing work.
Self-directed, commercially minded, proactive, and comfortable operating in fast-moving environments.

Experience using AI tools such as ChatGPT or Claude to improve marketing workflows, analysis, content development, or operational efficiency is a plus.
Benefits
Competitive USD compensation based on experience and client requirements.
Remote flexibility – work from anywhere while collaborating with international teams.
Opportunities to work with international companies across ecommerce, DTC, subscription, and digital businesses.

THE ROLE
We're hiring our first Regional Vice President for the Southwest. The territory runs from the Rockies (Colorado and Utah) through Arizona and the desert Southwest to Southern California. It covers some of the fastest-growing tech corridors in the country, plus a dense base of digital-native, media, gaming, and AI companies that already run on real-time data. You'll report to Mike Hayes and build the region from the first hire: set the strategy, recruit the team, and turn a widely spread, high-potential territory into one of the strongest regions in the Americas. This is a builder's seat with a clear path to grow with the business.
WHAT YOU'LL DO
- Design a multi-hub region. Build a coverage model across hubs that are very different from one another, including Los Angeles, Orange County, San Diego, Denver/Boulder, Salt Lake City/Lehi, and Phoenix. Decide where to place reps first and how to sequence growth.
- Hire the founding team. Recruit Enterprise AEs who can sell to engineering buyers as peers: technical, commercially hungry, and able to work on their own across a large geography.
- Own the number and the forecast. Carry the regional quota, run a weekly operating rhythm, and deliver a forecast your leadership can rely on, backed by MEDDPICC-style deal qualification.
- Win where real-time data is the product. Land and expand with digital-native and AI-native companies, media and entertainment, gaming, adtech, consumer internet, and fintech, where performance and cost at scale decide the deal.
- Turn adoption into enterprise agreements. Work with our product-led growth motion to find ClickHouse Cloud and open-source users ready for a committed relationship, then expand across teams and use cases (analytics, observability, and AI workloads).
- Lead from inside the deal. Coach reps through technical evaluations, POCs, procurement, and executive negotiations. Join the calls that matter.
- Orchestrate the extended team. Partner closely with Solutions Architects, Marketing, Partners/Alliances, and cloud marketplace teams to build pipeline and run cohesive account strategies.
- Build ClickHouse's brand across the region. Show up in the local developer, data, and startup communities, from Denver and Salt Lake to LA and San Diego, through events, meetups, and executive programs.
WHAT YOU BRING
- 10+ years of enterprise software sales in data infrastructure, databases, analytics, observability, or cloud, with a strong record as a quota-carrying seller.
- 5+ years leading enterprise sales teams as a first- or second-line leader, with attainment you can back up with specifics.
- Experience building or rebuilding a region from an early stage, ideally one spread across several metros, where you set coverage, hired the first reps, and grew the business.
- A strong network across the Rockies, the Southwest, and/or Southern California, both for hiring standout AEs and for reaching enterprise buyers.
- Rigorous pipeline management, deal qualification (MEDDPICC or similar), and forecast accuracy.
- Technical credibility with engineering-led buyers. You understand the modern data stack and can hold your own in architecture conversations.
- Experience with consumption-based pricing, open-source, or product-led growth models.
- The ClickHouse DNA: integrity, hunger, and accountability. You're curious, serious about the craft, and want to build rather than inherit.
NICE TO HAVE
- Experience selling to digital-native, AI-native, media/entertainment, or gaming companies.
- A background in real-time analytics, OLAP and columnar databases, observability, or AI/LLM infrastructure.
- Experience as an early leader at a high-growth data or infrastructure company through a period of fast scaling.
- Co-selling with AWS, GCP, or Azure, and transacting through cloud marketplaces.
- Experience leading a distributed team across several states and time zones.
PERKS
- Flexible work environment - ClickHouse is a globally distributed company and remote-friendly. We currently operate in over 25 countries.
- Healthcare - Employer contributions towards your healthcare.
- Equity in the company - Every new team member who joins our company receives stock options.
- Time off - Flexible time off in the US, generous entitlement in other countries.
- A USD$500 Home office setup if you’re a remote employee.
- Global Gatherings – We believe in the power of in-person connection and offer opportunities to engage with colleagues at company-wide offsites.
CULTURE - WE ALL SHAPE IT
As part of a rapidly scaling start-up, you will be instrumental in shaping our culture.
