Perplexity is seeking experienced ML engineers to design, build, and optimize the recommendation systems that power core experiences on Perplexity.
Perplexity builds AI for those who expect more. Our products are designed to help people find answers, make their most consequential decisions, and complete increasingly ambitious work. Across these use cases, the Perplexity experience must feel deeply personal. Great recommendations and user understanding are central to delighting and delivering for each user.
To do this, we are reimagining recommendation systems for the LLM era. Our goal is to combine the intelligence of frontier LLMs, the personalization context that comes from real product usage, and the continual learning capabilities of modern recommendation systems. We build systems that draw on past context and connected data sources to deeply understand each user's needs and recommend the actions that help them get the most out of Perplexity.
WHY PERPLEXITY IS DIFFERENT
- Craftsmanship. We build high quality, tasteful products targeting both AI native and AI curious users.
- Ownership. You identify the problem, design the solution and ship it.
- Entrepreneurship. We think like founders, act with urgency, and hustle to deliver for each other and our users.
- Scholarship. Work among highly talented peers, pursuing knowledge and truth, upleveling ourselves, our teams, and our products.
- Partnership. We amplify each others’ strengths, break down silos, and give selflessly to help our colleagues deliver excellence.
WHAT YOU'LL DO
- Own the personalization and ranking behind key product surfaces to make Perplexity more useful and drive impact on core user and business metrics.
- Build user modeling that captures intent, preference, and propensity, and powers more relevant, more personalized experiences.
- Design the decision layer that balances competing objectives to produce the best overall experience for the user.
- Build the data and evaluation foundations that let these systems learn and improve with usage.
- Help shape the technical direction of ranking, recommendations, and personalization at Perplexity.
WHAT WE'RE LOOKING FOR
- Deep, hands-on experience building production recommendation, ranking, or personalization systems at scale.
- Strong ML fundamentals, covering areas such as engagement modeling, model calibration, offline and online metrics, and online experimentation.
- Experience integrating LLMs into ranking, retrieval, or personalization pipelines.
- Taste and judgment for how personalization should work in an LLM-native product, and curiosity about reimagining it from first principles.
- For tech leadership roles, we will also look for prior experience setting technical direction for recommendation/ranking projects.
NICE TO HAVE
- Experience with large-scale ranking and training infrastructure (multi-stage retrieval and ranking, feature stores, real-time serving).
- Background in user understanding, feed ranking, notifications, growth, or lifecycle modeling.
OUR MISSION
Perplexity’s mission is to power curiosity. Curious people are the people who drive change in the world. Driving change is a continuous cycle of learning, building, and integrating.
Learn: curious people constantly learn new things by asking more. They question the status quo in their own expertise and they constantly learn outside of it. Research is essential to them and never ending.
Build: curious people make and create things, to show the world their new answers to problems no one else ever questioned. They take action on what they’ve learned. Makers need tools to create their products, their companies, their reality.
Integrate: they must interact with the world as it is to drive change and adoption. True leaders do not simply build something and hope. They must have armies of agents and workers who can constantly work in millions of small ways.
Repeat. For curious people this is a cycle that never ends.

In 2026, we launched Computer, the defining product for the new era of agentic AI. Millions of people now use Perplexity to transform knowledge into action, and the Growth team owns the product loops that help them discover, adopt, and build lasting habits around our most important AI experiences.
As a growth engineer at Perplexity, you'll work across the full funnel — activation, onboarding, SEO, lifecycle, conversion, retention, and paid upgrade moments — while also building the applied AI systems that make those experiences smarter. Engineers are responsible for end-to-end projects from training and productionizing classifiers to identify high-intent users, personalizing value discovery, shipping contextual onboarding experiments, or wiring new AI capabilities into measurable adoption and revenue outcomes.
Growth at Perplexity goes beyond incremental funnel optimization. The team sits close to the core product - we translate behavioral signals, model outputs, and fast experimentation into durable product surfaces used across consumer and enterprise workflows. You'll move fast, run many experiments in parallel, and own the outcome end-to-end.
Tech Stack: TypeScript | Next.js | React | Python | PostgreSQL | Eppo | AWS
WHY PERPLEXITY IS DIFFERENT
- Craftsmanship. We build high quality, tasteful products targeting both the AI native and AI curious.
We amplify each others' strengths, break down silos, and give selflessly to help our colleagues deliver excellence.
WHAT YOU'LL DO
- Design, build, and own growth surfaces across the full funnel — activation, onboarding, SEO, lifecycle, conversion, retention, and paid upgrade moments — for Computer and every Perplexity product.
- Lead experiments end-to-end, from hypothesis and instrumentation through implementation, analysis, and rollout, shipping many in parallel and learning quickly from each.
- Build applied AI systems that power growth: classifiers for high-intent segments, personalization for value discovery, and AI-driven onboarding and recommendation surfaces.
- Launch vertical-specific experiences (e.g., students, enterprise organizations) that connect new AI capabilities to measurable adoption and revenue outcomes.
- Hill-climb on the metrics that matter: activation rate, paid conversion, retention, and habit formation, instrumented with clean data and trustworthy experiment readouts.
- Partner closely with Product, Design, Data Science, Monetization, Marketing, and Applied AI to translate behavioral signals and model outputs into durable product surfaces.
QUALIFICATIONS
- 2+ years of professional software engineering experience (we're open to strong junior and mid-level candidates with a track record of shipping).
- Full-stack engineering skills, with comfort across a modern web stack (we use Next.js, React, TypeScript on the frontend and Python on the backend).
- Strong execution: you ship many experiments and product improvements in parallel and drive them to a clear outcome.
- Familiarity with A/B testing and experimentation platforms (Eppo, Statsig, Optimizely, or in-house equivalents).
- Comfort with SQL and data-informed decision-making — you can pull, segment, and interpret your own funnel data.
- Strong product judgment; you translate user behavior and growth opportunities into simple, effective technical solutions.
- Self-motivated with strong ownership instincts; you propose experiments, ship features ahead of schedule, and drive improvements without asking for permission.
- Genuine interest and adoption of AI products and willingness to learn quickly.
NICE TO HAVE
- Direct experience on a growth, activation, conversion, retention, or lifecycle team at a consumer or PLG/self-serve SaaS company.
- Experience training and productionizing ML models (classifiers, ranking, personalization) and connecting them to product surfaces.
- Experience with SEO, lifecycle marketing tooling, or paid acquisition surfaces.
- Familiarity with subscription and/or usage based billing products, paywalls, or paid upgrade experimentation.
- Experience shipping for both consumer and enterprise audiences.
- Time spent at a fast-growing startup or on a high-ownership engineering team.
- Familiarity with mobile development - Swift/Objective-C/Kotlin/Java, in-app payments, mobile release cycles, Apple App Store and/or Google Play Store guidelines, and rollout monitoring

- Contribute to the culture of Ramp’s data team by influencing processes, tools, and systems that will allow us to make better decisions in a scalable way
- Collaborate with P/E/D/D (product, engineering, data and design) teams to develop product roadmaps and measure success
- Work closely with data engineering teams to capture, move, store, and transform raw data into highly actionable insights, and partner with business teams to turn those insights into action
WHAT YOU NEED
- Minimum of 4 years of industry experience as a Data Scientist
- Strong knowledge of SQL (preferably Redshift, Snowflake, BigQuery) and how to write efficient SQL queries
- Familiarity with BI tools (preferably Looker, Omni, Sigma, Hex or equivalent) and experience distributing data insights via reports and dashboards
- Track record of shipping high quality products and features at scale
- Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, constantly improving, start-up environment that focuses on solving problems with iterative technical solutions

- Experience debugging and diagnosing issues across complex or distributed systems (for example: firmware, mobile, backend) is a strong plus.
- Excellent collaboration and communication skills, driving cross-functional problem solving, tradeoff definition, and optimization.
- Strong commitment to embracing and leveraging AI tools in day-to-day tasks, ensuring AI-assisted work aligns with the same high-quality standards as personal contributions.

The U.S. base salary range for this full-time position is $170,000-$230,000. Salary ranges are determined by role, level, and location. Within each range, individual pay is based on factors such as job-related skills, experience, performance, and relevant education or training.
In addition to the base salary, the successful candidate will also receive benefits and a generous equity package.
These ranges may be modified in the future to reflect evolving market conditions and organizational needs. While most offers will typically fall toward the starting point of the range, total compensation will depend on the candidate’s specific qualifications, expertise, and alignment with the role’s requirements.
