About Anthropic
Anthropic’s mission is to create reliable, interpretable, and steerable AI systems. We want AI to be safe and beneficial for our users and for society as a whole. Our team is a quickly growing group of committed researchers, engineers, policy experts, and business leaders working together to build beneficial AI systems.
About the Role
As a Technical Deployment Lead on the Forward Deployed Engineering team, you will lead the delivery of custom agentic AI solutions for enterprise customers. You'll own high-value engagements where we collaborate directly with customers to build and deploy agents into their most critical business processes
Each engagement runs from SOW through production deployment. Forward Deployed Engineers build the technical solution; you drive the delivery plan, product scoping, stakeholder relationships, and the organizational complexity of deploying agents into complex enterprise environments.
You need to be credible in architecture conversations with engineering leads and equally comfortable running executive briefings with C-suite sponsors. You won't write production code, but you'll pressure-test technical decisions and make real-time trade-offs on scope and priority when things go sideways on an engagement.
This is also a builder's role. We're in the early innings of an emerging motion - the playbooks, the delivery patterns, the repeatable IP that makes the next engagement faster and better don't exist yet. The TDLs who thrive here are the ones who get that codifying what works is as important as the engagement in front of them right now.
Responsibilities
Own the technical delivery plan for each engagement. Work from the signed SOW to a sequenced roadmap with clear milestones, dependencies, success criteria, and value hypotheses that FDEs execute against.
Lead delivery discovery. Map customer workflows and constraints in depth, pressure-test the scoped MVP against what you find, and shape the solution architecture with the FDEs.
Run day-to-day engineering execution. Drive delivery across Anthropic and customer teams. Keep progress unblocked and sequenced. Make real-time trade-offs on scope and priority to protect the critical path.
Own product scoping during delivery. Author requirements, prioritize the engineering backlog, manage scope against success criteria, and hold the bar for what good looks like for the people and enterprises who will use the product.
Own the customer relationship throughout delivery. Lead executive briefings, manage stakeholder communications across technical leads and procurement, and represent Anthropic's technical credibility with senior business and engineering leaders.
Own value measurement and ROI. Define impact hypotheses, set baselines and KPIs, run pre- and post-deployment measurement, and report outcomes to executive sponsors.
Contribute reusable delivery patterns. Capture what works on your engagements and feed field signal to the Programs Leads, Product, and Research.
Navigate enterprise and regulatory complexity. Security reviews, legal approvals, procurement processes, compliance requirements, and organizational dynamics.
Manage scope and change. Handle evolving requirements, set expectations, negotiate contract modifications, identify risks early, and escalate with clear context when needed.
Run engagement-level delivery operations: sprint ceremonies, milestone reviews, and engagement reporting that feed the team's post-sales cadence and dashboards.
Travel to customer sites. Build relationships, unblock delivery, and accelerate adoption. (up to 25–50% travel expected).
You May Be a Good Fit If You
Have led AI/ML engagements/deployments, whether as a founder, data scientist, engineer, researcher, or in a professional services or consulting role.
Operate like the CEO of your engagement. You take initiative without a mandate, make decisions with incomplete information, and lead rather than wait for instructions.
Have delivered AI, ML, or LLM-based agentic solutions into production. You understand solution patterns, integration approaches, and what breaks in real environments.
Have experience in a specialized vertical (life sciences, pharmaceutical, retail, mining, agriculture, etc.).
Can navigate architecture discussions with engineering stakeholders, evaluate technical trade-offs, and pressure-test technical decisions. You won't write production code, but you will own the technical direction of engagements alongside FDEs.
Have a track record delivering complex, high-stakes technical projects for enterprise clients where outcomes depended on tight coordination and fast decision-making - ideally across multiple workstreams in regulated industries.
Have executive presence - polished, credible, and comfortable representing Anthropic to senior leaders in high-stakes environments.
Thrive in ambiguity and bring structure where none exists.
Have a builder's mindset - you're here to create a function, not just join one.

How we're different
We believe that the highest-impact AI research will be big science. At Anthropic we work as a single cohesive team on just a few large-scale research efforts. And we value impact — advancing our long-term goals of steerable, trustworthy AI — rather than work on smaller and more specific puzzles. We view AI research as an empirical science, which has as much in common with physics and biology as with traditional efforts in computer science. We're an extremely collaborative group, and we host frequent research discussions to ensure that we are pursuing the highest-impact work at any given time. As such, we greatly value communication skills.
The easiest way to understand our research directions is to read our recent research. This research continues many of the directions our team worked on prior to Anthropic, including: GPT-3, Circuit-Based Interpretability, Multimodal Neurons, Scaling Laws, AI & Compute, Concrete Problems in AI Safety, and Learning from Human Preferences.
Come work with us!
Anthropic is a public benefit corporation headquartered in San Francisco. We offer competitive compensation and benefits, optional equity donation matching, generous vacation and parental leave, flexible working hours, and a lovely office space in which to collaborate with colleagues.

WHO ARE WE?
Cohere is the leading security-first enterprise AI company. We build cutting-edge foundation AI models and end-to-end products that are designed to solve real-world business problems.
We’re training and deploying frontier models for enterprises who are building AI systems. We believe that our work is instrumental to the widespread adoption of AI and we are looking for folks that want to be part of that.
We obsess over what we build. Each one of us is responsible for contributing to increasing the capabilities of our models and the value they drive for our customers. Cohere is a team of researchers, engineers, designers, and more, who are all passionate about their craft.
We are a global technology company headquartered in Toronto with key offices in London, New York City, San Francisco, Montreal, Paris, Berlin and Seoul. Join us!
Role overview:
North is Cohere’s AI workspace platform for enterprises: a secure, customizable environment where companies can use AI across their real workflows while maintaining control over sensitive data. North connects AI agents with workplace tools, applications, and business context, helping users delegate complex work, build automations, inspect outputs, and collaborate with AI in production environments.
As North becomes more capable, one of the most important questions is also one of the hardest: how do we know whether the model is actually getting better for the workflows customers care about?
This role is about being the voice of North inside modelling. You will build the evaluation systems, feedback loops, and applied modelling workflows that make sure model progress translates into better product outcomes for North users. You will work closely with North product teams, customer-facing teams, and modelling teams to define what “good” means across the product surface, turn real usage and product direction into high-quality evals, and use those evals to guide model selection, patches, and regular model updates.
This is neither a pure research role nor a conventional product engineering role. It is a rigorous applied MLE role for someone who cares deeply about measurement, model behavior, and real-world product quality. You should be excited by the craft of building careful evals: evals that capture messy agentic workflows, reflect actual customer needs, resist superficial benchmark hacking, and provide useful signal for where the product and models need to go next.
Please note: this team works closely across Europe and East Coast North America time zones. We are open to candidates who can collaborate effectively within those hours.
Key responsibilities:
- Own the eval strategy for North: define what we need to measure across agent workflows, tool use, enterprise knowledge work such as deep research, document creation or editing, and other human-AI interactions.
- Build high-quality evals from the realities of the product: user feedback, production failures, privacy-preserving usage logs, internal dogfooding, customer needs, and forward-looking product goals.
- Create systems that continuously turn what North is learning from users, customers, and feature teams into evals, so measurement keeps pace with the product rather than becoming a static benchmark.
- Be the voice of North inside modelling: extract clear insight from eval results, customer-derived data and product context, then turn model failures, capability gaps, and North-specific needs into actionable recommendations for the central modelling teams.
Qualifications:
- You have improved LLM-powered, agent-powered, or AI-product systems through evals, feedback loops, data curation, prompting, model adaptation, or model selection.
- You care deeply about evaluation as a craft: representative tasks, precise rubrics, clean data, failure analysis, regression tracking, and knowing when a metric is giving false confidence.
- You have strong applied MLE judgment and can reason clearly about model behavior, eval validity, product outcomes, and production tradeoffs.
- You are comfortable working close to users and product teams, while translating messy qualitative signals into measurement that other modelling teams can act on.
- You are self-directed, practical, and motivated by open-ended problems where the right answer requires both technical depth and product understanding.
- You care about making AI systems genuinely useful in real enterprise settings, not just better on abstract benchmarks.
If some of the above does not line up perfectly with your experience, we still encourage you to apply.
Working Location:
This role can be based remotely or from one of our office locations listed on the job description - there is no minimum in-office qualification requirement. Here at Humanoid, we believe in a future where robots amplify human potential. That’s why we’ve set out on a mission to build the world’s most capable, commercially-scalable, and safe humanoid robots. We’re bringing that mission to life with HMND‑01 - our rapidly developed humanoid platform being deployed in real industrial environments - and we’re growing the team to take it even further.
ABOUT THE ROLE
We are looking for a Software Engineer to join our Control Team in London.
You will own how we measure control quality - per robot and across the fleet. Today, judging whether a change made the robot better is still too often an engineer's opinion after a few runs. You will replace that with numbers: reproducible, automated, trusted numbers that say whether a release is better than the last one, whether one robot behaves like another, and whether a fleet is ready for a pilot.
This is a software engineering role, not a control design role. You do not need to derive a whole-body controller. You do need real robotics experience, strong engineering discipline, and genuine interest in the physics of what you are measuring - the control engineers bring the theory and will rely on you to tell them the truth about their code.
WHAT YOU'LL DO
Control Quality Metrics
- Turn qualitative concerns about control quality - smoothness, latency, tracking error, accuracy, and the like - into precise, computable metrics, and build the pipelines that compute them consistently from recorded robot data, simulation runs and live telemetry.
- Own metric definitions and versioning so a number measured today is comparable with the same number measured six months from now.
Evaluation & Test Infrastructure
- Develop automated test harnesses that evaluate control releases deterministically - reproducible, run-to-run comparable, free of the hidden state that makes hardware testing unreliable.
- Wire control evaluation into CI across simulation and hardware-in-the-loop, with pass/fail thresholds so regressions are caught automatically rather than discovered on a customer site.
- Build the tooling that lets engineers compare controller variants and releases side by side.
Fleet-Level Control Quality
- Build the per-robot and per-fleet test suites that establish whether each robot meets the expected control performance bar - runnable by other teams without controls support.
- Track control quality over time and across units - drift, per-robot variation, degradation - and own the path from robot to metric, including the dashboards that make control health legible.
WHAT WE'RE LOOKING FOR
- Robotics experience on real systems - you understand robot data, timing and synchronisation, and the many ways hardware experiments go wrong.
- Strong Python, plus enough modern C++ to work confidently inside a real-time control codebase and instrument it.
- Built test automation, evaluation frameworks or benchmarking infrastructure for complex systems - and got other engineers to actually use them.
- Solid measurement and data analysis judgement: sampling, noise, statistical significance, and knowing when a difference between two runs is real.
- Experience with robot middleware and data formats (ROS/ROS2, message recording and replay, time sync), CI/CD pipelines and Git-based workflows.
Nice to have:
- Familiarity with robot kinematics and dynamics, or prior exposure to control systems — enough to hold an informed conversation about what you are measuring.
- Hardware-in-the-loop test rigs and physical regression testing.
- Physics simulation environments (MuJoCo, Isaac Sim/Isaac Lab) and sim-to-real validation.
- Operating or supporting a fleet of robots or other distributed physical devices.
- Data engineering: pipeline orchestration, time-series databases, large-scale log processing.
- Release management or quality gates for safety-relevant software.
WHAT WE OFFER
- Competitive equity: stock options with meaningful upside as we scale.
- 30+ paid days off, including 23 days of annual leave, all UK bank holidays, and additional company closure days (including Christmas–New Year shutdown).
- Private healthcare, including virtual and in-person care.
- Pension scheme with 8% total contribution (5% employee, 3% employer) on full earnings.
- Free daily breakfast, catered lunch, and snacks in-office.
- Work at the frontier - collaborate daily with world-class engineers, researchers, and product experts building the next generation of AI and humanoid robotics.
- Real ownership - direct access to founding leadership, meaningful input on product direction, and the ability to drive key initiatives from day one.

Our mission on the Connectivity team is to make Claude the most connected AI. As agents take on more real-world work, we're taking a leading role in defining how they get access to external systems — safely, with the right permissions, and in ways enterprises can trust. We ship standards and services used by claude.ai, Claude Code, Cowork, and the API. We own the MCP proxy that routes every tool call and the OAuth and token management that keeps connections authenticated. We're also core contributors to the MCP spec — now an open standard under the Linux Foundation — and maintain the official Python and TypeScript SDKs.
We're looking for experienced software engineers to join Connectivity. The team spans San Francisco and London, and you'll work closely with partner teams across Anthropic to deliver impact across all of our products. You'll work on problems where reliability and enterprise trust are critical. This means OAuth at scale, admin controls that let IT govern what agents can do, and proxy infrastructure that is reliable by default.
What you'll do
You'll design, build, and operate the core connectivity infrastructure behind external tool calls — the MCP proxy and the OAuth and token management systems that keep connections authenticated. You'll own reliability for infrastructure that other teams and external partners depend on, including SLOs, on-call, incident response, and postmortems. You'll build the admin controls and permission models that let enterprise IT govern what agents can do, and contribute to the MCP standard and its ecosystem, including the spec and the official Python and TypeScript SDKs. You'll turn ambiguous outcomes into shipped, scoped work, dogfooding what you build in the products that consume it.
You'll independently scope complex, multi-month projects, drive cross-org alignment through ambiguous problem spaces, and make architectural decisions that shape how Anthropic builds and scales its products. You'll partner directly with research to productize cutting-edge capabilities, and will have lasting impact on the platform that hundreds of thousands of companies and internal/external engineers depend on every day.
You might be a good fit if you:
Experience as a backend or platform engineer
Familiarity with using AI tools as part of the software development process
Take a product-focused approach to platform work and care about building solutions that are robust, scalable, and easy to use
Take full ownership of your work — from design through build, deployment, and operations, to iterating on and improving your product
Can navigate ambiguity and make sound technical decisions independently, and have ideally operated in both 0 → 1 and more mature team or company settings
Experience operating production distributed systems, with an understanding of what reliability, observability, and incident response require at scale
Excellent communication skills, with the ability to build consensus across teams and time zones
Deadline to apply:
None. Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis.
Location Preference:
Preference will be given to candidates based in NY, SEA, SF or the Bay Area given the current location of team.
The annual compensation range for this role is listed below.
For sales roles, the range provided is the role’s On Target Earnings ("OTE") range, meaning that the range includes both the sales commissions/sales bonuses target and annual base salary for the role.
Annual Salary:
$405,000
—
$485,000 USD
Logistics
Minimum education:
Bachelor’s degree or an equivalent combination of education, training, and/or experience
Required field of study:
A field relevant to the role as demonstrated through coursework, training, or professional experience
Minimum years of experience:
Years of experience required will correlate with the internal job level requirements for the position
Location-based hybrid policy:
Currently, we expect all staff to be in one of our offices at least 25% of the time. However, some roles may require more time in our offices.
Visa sponsorship:
We do sponsor visas! However, we aren't able to successfully sponsor visas for every role and every candidate. But if we make you an offer, we will make every reasonable effort to get you a visa, and we retain an immigration lawyer to help with this.
We encourage you to apply even if you do not believe you meet every single qualification.
Not all strong candidates will meet every single qualification as listed. Research shows that people who identify as being from underrepresented groups are more prone to experiencing imposter syndrome and doubting the strength of their candidacy, so we urge you not to exclude yourself prematurely and to submit an application if you're interested in this work. We think AI systems like the ones we're building have enormous social and ethical implications. We think this makes representation even more important, and we strive to include a range of diverse perspectives on our team.
Your safety matters to us.
To protect yourself from potential scams, remember that Anthropic recruiters only contact you from @anthropic.com email addresses. In some cases, we may partner with vetted recruiting agencies who will identify themselves as working on behalf of Anthropic. Be cautious of emails from other domains.

Join us!
As the Senior Director of Solutions Architecture for Asia Pacific at Cohere, you will own Solutions Architecture across the region. Our customers here are banks, telcos, industrials and governments who cannot send their data to someone else’s cloud, and who are past experimenting and into production. You will lead the team that makes those deployments real, and you will be accountable for the technical win across the region.
This is a build. Today a Solutions Architecture team covers Korea, Japan and Southeast Asia. You will own that team, grow it, and build the in-region depth this market needs. You will be expected to open doors on your own credibility and network from your first weeks, set direction for the function, sit on the Solution Architecture leadership team alongside the regional leaders for the Americas and EMEA, and contribute to company-wide decisions with your peers across Sales, Product and Engineering.
IN THIS ROLE, YOU WILL:
- Build and Lead the Team: Hire, coach and develop the Asia Pacific Solutions Architecture organization, and establish in-region depth rather than relying on support flown in from other regions.
- Open Doors Across the Region: Bring industry knowledge, technical credibility and an existing network to get Cohere into strategic accounts quickly. This is the central expectation of the role and you should expect to be measured on it.
- Own the Technical Win: Be personally accountable for the technical outcome of the region’s most strategic pursuits, and be in the room for the ones that decide the year.
- Set Direction for the Function: Define the vision, strategy, coverage model and operating rhythm for Asia Pacific Solutions Architecture across three markets that buy differently and regulate differently.
- Architect Sovereign and Regulated Deployments: Lead customers into secure, scalable, production-ready agentic AI deployments across cloud, hybrid, VPC, on-premises and air-gapped environments, which is where much of this region’s demand sits.
- Build Repeatable Solution Practices: Establish scalable solution-selling methodologies, industry playbooks, executive narratives, business cases and technical delivery frameworks that improve consistency and win rates.
- Partner with Regional Sales Leadership: Own territory, coverage and pipeline jointly with the Asia Pacific sales leader, and be accountable for the number together.
- Shape Product Direction: Partner closely with Product and Engineering to translate Asia Pacific customer needs into platform improvements and roadmap priorities. You will be one of a handful of people who can tell our product organization what this region actually requires.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Build and develop the Asia Pacific Solutions Architecture team through hiring, coaching, performance management and career development.
- Partner with regional Sales leadership to pursue and close strategic enterprise opportunities across financial services, telecommunications, industrials, technology and the public sector.
- Establish and own the regional coverage model across Korea, Japan and Southeast Asia, and make the case for where the team grows next.
- Lead executive workshops, discovery sessions, solution presentations and technical deep dives with C-suite and senior customer stakeholders.
- Develop business cases, solution architectures, implementation roadmaps and technical proposals that align customer objectives with Cohere’s platform.
- Guide customers through the deployment of enterprise AI solutions, ensuring scalability, security, governance, data residency and operational readiness.
- Create repeatable solution assets, industry playbooks and best practices that enable the team to consistently deliver high-quality customer engagements.
- Collaborate cross-functionally with Product, Engineering, Sales and Customer Success to ensure alignment between customer needs and platform evolution, and contribute to decisions that reach beyond your own function.
- Serve as the voice of the region by capturing customer feedback and competitive insights that influence product strategy.
- Own and report on the region’s operational and commercial metrics, including technical win rates, pipeline health, coverage and team performance.
WHAT WE’RE LOOKING FOR:
- Leadership Experience: 15+ years in Solutions Architecture, Solutions Engineering, Technical Consulting or Enterprise Architecture, including 7+ years leading customer-facing technical teams, and a record of developing people into senior and leadership roles.
- Regional Depth and Network: You have built or run a technical organization across more than one Asia Pacific market, you understand how enterprise technology is actually bought in each of them, and you have a network of senior technical and executive relationships you are willing to be measured on.
- People Leadership: A proven record of hiring, coaching and developing high-performing Solutions Architecture or Solutions Engineering teams, including building a team in-region from a small base.
- Hands-On Technical Credibility: You are technical enough to be believed by a strong engineering bench. You have put real AI systems into production, you can pressure-test your team’s architecture, and you can be the most useful person in a design conversation when it matters. We care far more about what you have deployed, and what broke, than about which models you can name.
- Commercial Acumen: A demonstrated ability to partner with enterprise Sales leadership, influence strategic deals, and articulate business value to executive stakeholders. You have carried a number and can point to deals you personally moved.
- Executive Presence: You command a room. You are credible in front of a CEO and their business leaders as well as a Chief Information Officer, a Chief AI Officer or a Chief Information Security Officer, and you can move between the business case and the architecture without losing either audience.
- Technical Expertise: A strong understanding of modern AI architectures, including large language models, agentic systems, retrieval, enterprise integrations, cloud platforms, hybrid and on-premises deployments, security and governance.
- Enterprise Experience: Experience designing and delivering enterprise technology solutions in complex, regulated or large-scale environments.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Experience building an AI, machine learning or data science function inside a large regulated enterprise, and taking it into production.
- Depth in Asia Pacific financial services, telecommunications or the public sector.
- Experience deploying into environments where the customer controls the infrastructure, including on-premises, sovereign and air-gapped deployments.
- Background in enterprise AI, cloud, or data platform companies, or applied AI consulting organizations.
- Experience building repeatable solution-selling methodologies and helping generalist technical teams operate at a consistently high level.
- Working proficiency in a regional language in addition to English.
- Experience operating in high-growth environments where speed, ownership and cross-functional collaboration are critical.

- Annual enrichment benefits:
Arts & culture, fitness/wellness, quality time, and a workspace improvement credit.
Education & learning stipend for conferences, courses, and coaching.
- 6 weeks of paid vacation (30 working days!)
- Budget for traveling to other offices if you are remote, plus an annual company offsite.

GiveWell’s mission is to help people in need as much as we can by researching the most cost‑effective ways to save and improve lives, sharing our work openly, and directing donations to the programs we believe will do the most good. Our work, which focuses on global health and well-being, is funded by tens of thousands of donors who rely on our research to inform their giving. We’ve grown from directing $1.5 million in 2010 to directing more than $400 million in 2025. We anticipate our total grantmaking is likely to approach or even exceed $1 billion this year, and we are working toward a future that could be several times that scale. Through years of deliberate groundwork, we’ve been growing our research capacity and scope in order to direct substantially more funding to the most impactful opportunities we can find.
Summary
GiveWell is seeking a Cause Prioritization Lead to own and improve our cause prioritization process, develop a portfolio of early-stage grants across emerging cause areas, and rapidly respond to promising new opportunities that are unusual for GiveWell, do not fit with our existing grantmaking teams and may require innovative approaches to investigation.
As part of our lean research team, you will have an outsized influence on our funding decisions and help us save and improve lives on a global scale. You’ll create and lead ambitious research agendas, answer complex questions, and inform high-impact grantmaking decisions by combining rigorous evidence review, cost-effectiveness modeling, and thoughtful judgment.
The Cause Prioritization lead will join GiveWell at Senior Program Officer level. You will build a sub-team within the New Areas team and will report to our New Areas team lead.
The role
As Cause Prioritization Lead, you will be an intellectual leader of GiveWell’s work in new domains. In this role, you will build and lead a new sub-team within GiveWell's New Areas team. You will be responsible for:
Improving our cause prioritization process to identify promising emerging areas for grantmaking; ensuring that process combines evidence, cost-effectiveness modelling and our own judgement, and is continuously responsive to new information and external feedback.
Overseeing a portfolio of grant investigations and grant management in each of the highest priority emerging cause areas, and starting to build a research agenda including identifying ways to learn about key uncertainties through the initial grants that we make.
Communicating externally about our work and building a network of people across implementers, funders, and academia whose expertise span a broad range of cause areas, to help source new ideas.
Managing a team to execute these goals, and supporting the professional development of other team members. Creating a culture that is agile and willing to respond to new and unusual opportunities.
Directly investigating more complicated grantmaking opportunities yourself. This could include investigating types of programs that are newer to GiveWell; for example, programs earlier in the product development cycle or programs to support government prioritization and planning.
In the course of your work, you might approach questions like these:
How can we source new grantmaking opportunities in fields in which we don't have an established presence, and how can we make sure we hear from a range of implementers, not just those we've worked with before?
How much uncertainty are we willing to accept before making a grant, which questions do we need to answer before making a grant, and which ones can we deprioritize or answer later?
What research we can fund today that could substantially impact our grantmaking five years from now?
How should we balance exploring and seeding new, smaller opportunities with funding cost-effective opportunities at scale today?
How can we ensure that we identify new funding gaps opened up by changes in other donors' priorities?
How can we triangulate empirical evidence against expert opinion on other qualitative features, like organizational track record?
How can we estimate the probability that a new health commodity comes to market in low and middle income countries, and on what timeline, at what scale?
How can we model the cost-effectiveness of a horizontal program which has benefits across a diffuse set of health outcomes?
Team structure
Our research department is currently organized into eight teams:
Five of the teams (Water, Livelihoods, Nutrition, Malaria, and Vaccines) focus on specific areas of grantmaking.
The Cross-Cutting team focuses on methodological issues, research quality, and other big-picture concerns that cut across all of our research work.
The Commons team provides generalized research support to each of the other teams, including landscaping research, vetting, and publishing.
The New Areas team focuses on interventions in domains that are new to GiveWell.
The New Areas team is currently a 9-person team within an overall research department of ~80 people, and focuses on interventions in domains that are new to GiveWell. Our work is divided into three main workstreams. Grantmaking in emerging cause areas, as well as the process for and identification of new cause areas for that portfolio, would be the primary responsibility of the Cause Prioritization Lead.
Core cause areas:
this is the set of cause areas for which the New Areas team devotes a significant amount of time developing subject-matter specific expertise and networks, a thorough research agenda, and a relatively large portfolio of grants across a mix of implementers and interventions. This portfolio currently includes our work on maternal and newborn health, family planning, tuberculosis, HIV and medical oxygen.
Emerging cause areas:
this is a broader set of cause areas for which the New Areas team is starting to build its expertise, networks and research agenda, and is making some initial grants. As our work in these areas becomes more mature, they could graduate to become a core cause area. In addition to new cause areas, this portfolio may include work on types of intervention that are new to GiveWell which could have applications across our teams: recent examples include market shaping, health systems strengthening and applications of AI to global health.
Incubators:
we support other organisations to identify potentially cost-effective interventions and create programs that we would be excited to support in the future (e.g., the
Clinton Health Access Initiative’s Incubator
). For example, we funded a program to provide diarrhea treatment to children in Nigeria that we co-designed with CHAI through the Incubator program. Some of this work could fall under the remit of the Cause Prioritization Lead where it overlaps with our emerging cause areas.
Team values
We think our research team has unique qualities:
We care deeply about finding and sharing truth.
Truth-seeking is one of our
core values
. We post
our mistakes
and we prize our team members who keep our culture of free-flowing feedback strong.
We are independent.
We focus 100% on finding the most cost-effective opportunities to save and improve lives. Our researchers assist in communicating our research findings to the public and our donors, and on occasion we provide tailored advice to ultra-high-net-worth donors who want to rely on our expertise to direct their giving—but we never ask our researchers to trade off against honesty, or to hide their real beliefs.
We don’t waste time.
Once it’s clear that a particular research question is unlikely to change our bottom-line funding recommendation, we drop it as quickly as possible. We encourage our research staff to constantly re-evaluate their portfolios and only work on the highest-priority questions.
Lean research team = huge personal impact.
In 2026,
our research team of ~80 people is directing close to 1 billion dollars and we expect grantmaking dollars per research team member to increase in the future.
We work well together.
Our research team is lean because we’re able to attract top-tier people, all of whom complete skills-based assessments before joining our staff. We maintain a high-performing, collegial culture and pay our staff accordingly.
About you
The Cause Prioritization lead must have quantitatively-oriented advanced degrees and substantial relevant experience using empirical tools to make rigorous, evidence-based decisions in the real world. Practically, our senior research staff typically has 5-10 years of post-grad work experience prior to joining GiveWell. We're happy to consider applicants who do not have advanced degrees, but we'll look for a commensurate amount of relevant experience. You can review our staff bios
here
for more practical insight on the backgrounds and experience of our current team.
We expect that people with the soft qualities below will be the most successful and happy on our team. This isn’t a full list, but hopefully it conveys the gist of our team’s professional personality:
GiveWell’s mission and methods are personally energizing—you like our approach to research and you find personal meaning in our story of impact.
You’re unusually curious—you ask lots of questions, and you're willing to interrogate others' work. Your curiosity also extends to your own work, and you aren’t defensive when your research comes under scrutiny.
You're a generalist and agile —you are able to get up to speed quickly on new topics and you feel comfortable task-switching. You are comfortable pivoting your focus as we learn new information, and are continuously reassessing promisingness.
You're a strong strategic thinker. You find ways to impose structure on a broad and undefined problem (e.g., how should your team prioritise work across a huge range of potential cause areas), you can develop and articulate a vision to your team, and build processes to execute that vision.
You're excited by people management. You take other team members' professional development seriously, and can provide a supportive environment whilst also delivering constructive feedback.
You're able to quickly hone in on the crux of the argument when assessing other people's work, probing on the most decision-relevant assumptions even in fields where you have limited contextual knowledge.
You're entrepreneurial. When you see a gap, you want to fill it, whether that's designing a new program, finding an implementer, or setting up a new kind of funding mechanism. You make bets under uncertainty.
You routinely think about and surface the value judgments, background knowledge, and strategic commitments that underlie your work. You understand the potential effects of mistaken mental models, so you strive to improve yours and your team’s.
You dislike it when people express strong confidence in views that don’t seem to rely on commensurate evidence. You carefully and legibly communicate about your confidence levels.
You appreciate the value of an excellent reputation and strong relationships. You can moderate your directness and intensity when you’re communicating with external folks.
You love a
gnarly problem
. You figure out the most important questions to answer, go deep on the details where they matter (and move on where they don’t), and reassess your mental models based on what you’ve learned.

About GiveWell
GiveWell is dedicated to finding and evaluating highly cost-effective global health and development opportunities, and we publish all the work, reasoning, and uncertainties behind our funding decisions. Our
giving funds
enable donors to contribute to the most impactful and cost-effective programs our researchers identify.
GiveWell is one of the world’s largest private funders of global development efforts. Trusted annually by tens of thousands of donors, GiveWell searches for highly cost-effective programs that save or improve lives the most. Since 2007, more than 150,000 donors have given over $2.6 billion through GiveWell to the most promising programs its research has identified, which we estimate will save more than
340,000 lives
.
GiveWell is most well-known for recommending a small number of
Top Charities
, which currently support
seasonal malaria chemoprevention
,
insecticide-treated nets
,
vaccine incentivization
, and
vitamin A supplementation
. However, most of our research capacity and grantmaking is devoted to
cost-effective opportunities outside of those programs
.
GiveWell
grants
have:
Helped governments
navigate changes to the funding landscape
and implement high-impact health programs, like
HIV/syphilis screening and treatment
for pregnant people in Zambia and Cameroon.
Sought to scope and scale promising interventions that don’t have clear existing implementers. We are supporting the
Clinton Health Access Initiative’s Incubator
to identify potentially cost-effective interventions and create programs that we would be excited to support in the future. For example, we
funded a program
to prevent tuberculosis among young children in Uttar Pradesh and Bihar, India, that we co-designed with CHAI through the Incubator program.
Provided funding to ensure that programs that recently faced foreign aid funding cuts could continue, like
healthcare support and malnutrition treatment
in northern Cameroon.
Funded program delivery alongside strengthened monitoring and evaluation, as in our grants to support
treatment of clubfoot
and to
evaluate the program
.
Tested our
assumptions and refined our understanding
through further research and data collection, including
improved estimates of disease burden
and studies on
the effect of water chlorination on mortality
and
the impact of a tree-planting program on farmers’ income
.
We make our reasoning public and transparent so others can challenge it (sometimes we even
pay people to point out our errors
). We go to unusual lengths to check our assumptions and assess our impact, including
funding research
to address our uncertainties and gathering
independent monitoring and evaluation data
about the programs we support. We
change
our minds when the evidence demands it. For more about GiveWell, listen to Ezra Klein’s
recent interview
with GiveWell’s co-founder and CEO Elie Hassenfeld.

We're looking for a Firmware Engineer to develop and maintain the embedded software behind the end effectors on our robots and the human-worn devices operators use to interface with them. This role combines firmware development with hardware integration you'll sit at the boundary between hardware and software, bringing up new PCB revisions, writing firmware and drivers, and integrating a wide range of sensors and compute platforms. You'll work closely with electrical and mechanical engineers in a high-paced environment where priorities shift fast and reliability matters.
WHAT YOU'LL DO
- Develop Embedded Firmware: Write and maintain firmware for embedded microcontrollers, covering sensor sampling, status indication, input handling and power management.
- Integrate Sensors & Drivers: Integrate and write drivers for sensors, encoders, LCD screens, IMUs, ToF sensors, LiDARs and cameras, including MIPI and other interfaces.
- Work Across Compute Platforms: Integrate device-level firmware with higher-level compute platforms such as ESP32, Raspberry Pi and NVIDIA Jetson, and similar Linux-based platforms.
- Implement Communication Interfaces: Design and implement interfaces between hardware subsystems, including I2C, SPI, UART, Ethernet, USB, CAN, EtherCAT and MIPI.
- Bring Up New Hardware: Review schematics, debug boards with an oscilloscope/logic analyzer, and resolve integration issues spanning firmware, electrical and mechanical.
- Own Calibration & Fault Detection: Develop calibration routines, power-sequencing logic, and fault/status detection for sensors and mechatronic systems.
- Support Component Selection: Help with component selection for sensors, MCUs and other hardware building blocks.
- Maintain OTA Pipelines: Build and maintain OTA update and image provisioning pipelines for fleets of embedded devices.
WHAT WE'RE LOOKING FOR
- Degree in Electrical/Computer Engineering, Computer Science, or a related field, with 4+ years' experience in embedded firmware development (C/C++).
- Hands-on experience with microcontroller and compute platforms such as ESP32, STM32, Raspberry Pi and NVIDIA Jetson.
- Experience integrating and/or writing drivers for sensors and peripherals — encoders, IMUs, ToF sensors, LiDARs, cameras and LCD/display modules.
- Solid understanding of embedded communication and sensor interfaces: I2C, SPI, MIPI, UART, Ethernet/TCP-IP, USB, CAN and EtherCAT.
- Comfortable bringing up and debugging new hardware revisions, with strong skills using an oscilloscope, logic analyzer and JTAG/SWD.
- Experience developing calibration routines and supporting component selection alongside electrical and mechanical engineers.
Nice to have
- FPGA experience
- Experience with camera synchronisation or multi-sensor time-sync
- Python skills for tooling, test scripts, or diagnostics
- Experience working with formally defined hardware interfaces/contracts shared across teams
