Role Overview
This is a senior individual contributor role with significant architectural ownership. You will set the technical direction for how Backblaze detects, correlates, and responds to infrastructure incidents across our data centers, and you will mentor other engineers on the team as that platform matures. If you have a passion for making complex distributed systems visible, you are comfortable making architecture decisions that will outlive your tenure, and you are excited about applying AI and agentic automation to infrastructure operations, this role was built for you..
Key Responsibilities
Technical Leadership
Set technical direction and standards for observability across the organization, including instrumentation conventions, alerting philosophy, and dashboard design patterns.
Mentor engineers on the Observability team and act as a technical resource for SRE, Storage Engineering, and Network Engineering on observability practice.
Lead design reviews for observability work and represent the team in cross-functional architecture discussions.
Evaluate build-versus-buy decisions for observability and AIOps tooling, including data sovereignty and compliance considerations.
Produce and maintain design documentation, runbooks, and architectural decision records that make the platform operable and extensible by future contributors.
Observability Platform
Own and evolve our metrics pipeline, including VictoriaMetrics, Prometheus, and the Consul-based service discovery layer that keeps scrape targets current as infrastructure scales.
Own and expand our logging stack (OpenSearch, Logstash, and Filebeat) across all Backblaze data centers.
Architect and expand distributed tracing with Jaeger and OpenTelemetry, extending coverage beyond the current application instrumentation to new services.
Define and maintain Grafana dashboard standards for infrastructure, storage, and application performance visibility.
Drive expansion of internal application telemetry in partnership with application teams to improve visibility.
Define capacity and retention strategy for the telemetry stack as the fleet grows.

Partner with the SRE team on Consul-based service discovery for VictoriaMetrics scrape target automation.
Lead Ceph storage observability, including OSD health, performance metrics, and integration with alerting.
Collaborate with the Network Engineering team on BGP, routing, and network-level observability.
Required Qualifications
8+ years in a systems engineering, SRE, DevOps, or observability-focused role, including demonstrated technical leadership on a platform or infrastructure team.
Deep hands-on experience with Prometheus, VictoriaMetrics, or equivalent metrics platforms, including PromQL, Alertmanager, and operating these systems at scale.
Experience designing and operating log aggregation pipelines such as Elasticsearch/OpenSearch, Logstash, Filebeat, or similar.
Working knowledge of distributed tracing (Jaeger, OpenTelemetry, or equivalent), including instrumentation strategy, not just operation.
Proficiency in Python and/or Go for automation and tooling.
Experience with Kubernetes, including deploying workloads and understanding pod networking and storage.
Experience with infrastructure-as-code tooling and configuration management.
Strong understanding of Linux internals, with Debian/Ubuntu preferred.
Demonstrated experience mentoring engineers and raising the technical bar on a team.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills. You'll work across engineering, SRE, security, and leadership, and you'll be expected to write design documents that drive decisions.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience leading the evaluation or deployment of AIOps tooling, including alert correlation, deduplication, or automated root cause analysis.
Experience building, deploying, or operating AI agents or agentic AI systems. This is a strong differentiator.
Familiarity with LLM APIs (Anthropic, OpenAI) or self-hosted LLM inference in an infrastructure context.
Familiarity with Ceph storage, including OSD management, pool configuration, and CRUSH maps.
Experience with incident management platforms.
Familiarity with BGP, network observability, or working in multi-DC environments.
Experience with secrets management in production environments.
Experience operating in a regulated or compliance-driven environment.
Prior experience in a storage-focused company or hyperscale infrastructure environment.
What You'll Work On
A telemetry stack spanning several data centers with exabytes of storage under observation.
Real infrastructure at scale: Kubernetes, Ceph, Vitess, KVM, and a custom storage platform serving hundreds of thousands of customers.
A collaborative team that values engineering excellence, transparency, and operational rigor.
Pay Transparency
To provide greater transparency to candidates, we share base pay ranges for all US-based job postings regardless of state. Final offer amounts are determined by multiple factors including candidate location, skills, depth of work experience, and relevant licenses/credentials.
The expected salary range for this role is $178,000 - $200,000 plus 10% target annual bonus and RSUs.
At Backblaze, we value being fair and good to our customers, partners, and employees. Diversity, equity, and inclusion are at the core of our values. SENIOR DATA ENGINEER
ABOUT KEYROCK
Since our beginnings in 2017, we've grown to be a leading change-maker in the digital asset space, renowned for our partnerships and innovation.
Today, we partner with over 250 team members around the world. Our diverse team hails from 42 nationalities, with backgrounds ranging from self-taught DeFi natives to PhDs. Predominantly remote, we have hubs in London, Brussels, and Singapore, and host regular online and offline hangouts to keep the crew tight.
We are trading on more than 80 trading venues, and working with a wide array of asset issuers. As a well-established market maker, our distinctive expertise led us to expand rapidly. Today, our services span market making, options trading, high-frequency trading, OTC, and DeFi trading desks.
But we’re more than a service provider. We’re an initiator. We're pioneers in adopting the Rust Development language for our algorithmic trading, and champions of its use in the industry. We support the growth of Web3 startups through our Accelerator Program. We upgrade ecosystems by injecting liquidity into promising DeFi, RWA, and NFT protocols. And we push the industry's progress with our research and governance initiatives.
At Keyrock, we're not just envisioning the future of digital assets. We're actively building it.
ABOUT THE TEAM AND WHY THE ROLE EXISTS
The Central Data Team (CDT) is only a few months old, but data has been Keyrock's lifeblood since day one. We're now building the Keyrock Data Platform to give Keyrockers, and the AI agents working alongside them, the data and context they need to act fast and autonomously within agreed boundaries and aligned with our shared goals. Doing that means taking data from across the company and making sense of it in real time for all the functions that depend on it: trading desks, wealth and asset management, product, risk, finance, compliance, and research to name a few.
You'd be one of the early hires in CDT and we expect you to contribute to most of the bigger decisions and build work. The standards we settle on and the way the team ends up working are still open.
WHAT YOU’LL DO
- Build streaming and batch pipelines that ingest, normalise, and distribute market, trading, and portfolio data, resilient to feed and exchange failures.
- Build the self-serve tooling (SDKs, patterns, templates, AI agents) so other teams publish, consume, and build on data products without waiting on us.
- Own data contracts and schema evolution. Keep schema changes from turning into multi-team coordination events.
- Design the lakehouse and time-series layer around consumer query patterns.
- Build and evolve the Data Governance and Data Quality Framework: stale-feed detection, schema validation, range checks, idempotent writes, lineage, ownership, self-healing.
- Build the derived analytics the business runs on: cross-exchange spreads, VWAP at depth, order book microstructure for the desks; portfolio views, exposure, performance for wealth and asset management.
- Make observability, cost, and performance first-class from day one.
- Treat infrastructure as code (Docker, Terraform, CI/CD) alongside our Central Infrastructure Team.
- Work in the open: write things down, partner closely with Architecture, Infrastructure, Platform, and the rest of the teams.
WHAT WE’RE LOOKING FOR
Tools matter less to us than how you think about problems. That said, here's the shape of the person we have in mind.
Engineering Craft
- 8+ years of building production data systems that other people rely on.
- Strong proficiency in Python and SQL: not just being able to write a query, but being able to reason about what the engine is doing with it.
- Code that's easy for someone else to read, test, and delete later.
- Strong understanding of data modelling for both streaming and analytical workloads.
- Efficiency, quality, idempotency, and observability are taken seriously by default.
Systems Design
- You've designed and operated streaming systems on Kafka, Redpanda, MSK, or Kinesis, and you have opinions about partitioning, consumer groups, offsets, and schema registries.
- You've used a time-series store in production (ClickHouse ideally; TimescaleDB, QuestDB, or similar are fine too) and can talk about table design as a function of query patterns.
- You've worked with a lakehouse architecture and reason about table layout, partitioning, and compaction as design choices that shape query performance and storage cost.
- You build for self-healing and idempotency. Reprocessing is safe, retries don't double-write, and the system recovers without a human in the loop.
Operational Readiness
- Docker, Terraform, and CI/CD are how you work, not a separate "DevOps" thing.
- You think about cost and performance early.
- You instrument as you build: logs, metrics, and traces are part of the system from day one.
- You design for data quality and governance up front covering contracts, validation, lineage, and ownership
How You Think and Work
- You reason from first principles when a problem is new, stay pragmatic when it isn't, and update your view when you learn more.
- You treat the trading desks, wealth and asset management, product, risk, finance, compliance, and research as customers of what you build, and communicate with them that way.
- You optimise for outcomes over output. A smaller, simpler thing that ships and works beats a bigger thing that doesn't.
- You take ownership end-to-end: design, ship, operate, improve.
- You say what you think including when it's an unpopular take. You change your mind when the argument is better.
- You make the people around you better. Reviews are real, juniors grow from working with you, and peers want to work with you again.
- You're curious about how markets work. Data engineering on its own won't keep you interested here.
- You're honest about what you know and what you don't, and quick to close the gap.
- You understand financial market data: order books, trades, reference data, portfolios, exposures. Crypto, TradFi, or both are a strong plus.
NICE TO HAVE
- Lakehouse experience with Apache Iceberg or Delta Lake.
- Familiarity with DataHub or similar metadata/lineage platforms.
- Rust. Some of our performance-critical services are written in it. Interest is welcome; fluency isn't required.
WHAT YOU’LL GET
- A from-scratch mandate. You'll be among the first hires in CDT, and the platform, the standards, and the team culture are yours to shape with us.
- Strong partners. Close working relationships with Architecture, Infrastructure, Platform, and the desks themselves. You won't be building data in a vacuum.
- Autonomy on how you work. Flexible hours, remote-first, business-hours on-call shared across the team.
- A competitive salary package, with various benefits.
- A team that likes each other. Regular online get-togethers and a yearly onsite where everyone's in the same room.
OUR RECRUITMENT PROCESS
We’re after those with the right skills and a conscious choice to join our field. The perfect fit? Someone who’s driven, collaborative, acts with ownership and delivers solid, scalable outcomes. As an employer we are committed to building a positive and collaborative work environment. We welcome employees of all backgrounds, and hire, reward and promote entirely based on merit and performance. Due to the nature of our business and external requirements, we perform background checks on all potential employees, passing which is a prerequisite to join Keyrock

You lead rollouts, monitor health and usage, and keep stakeholders informed. You bring the technical fluency to guide deployment and adoption decisions, connect technical priorities to business outcomes, and engage specialists when deeper expertise is needed. You partner with Sales on expansions and renewals, and with Solutions, Support, Product, and Engineering on implementation, issues, and feedback.

- Guide customer admins and platform teams on deployment readiness, configuration best practices, and ongoing adoption. Lead technical discovery, facilitate admin enablement, and troubleshoot common adoption blockers; coordinate Solutions, Support, or Engineering for architecture design, complex implementations, and deeper troubleshooting.
- Identify expansion opportunities within existing accounts, and partner with Sales on upsell and cross-sell motions.
- Oversee renewals and forecasting, ensuring timely, successful commitments.
- Serve as the primary point of contact for inquiries, issues, and escalations, and collaborate with Coder teams to resolve them.
- Monitor and report on customer health and usage, including technical risks and progress toward adoption milestones.
- Develop deep expertise in Coder’s products to provide global customer coverage.
What we’re looking for
- 5+ years in customer success or a technical customer-facing role, with experience independently managing enterprise accounts and driving adoption, retention, and expansion.
- Practical knowledge of cloud infrastructure, DevOps, developer tools, coding agents, platform engineering, CI/CD, and the SDLC; ability to discuss how these fit into a customer’s environment and inform their adoption strategy.
- Experience guiding customer onboarding and deployments in SaaS or self-hosted environments. Able to understand a deployment architecture, ask informed questions about infrastructure and security, investigate common issues using logs and documentation, and turn findings into clear next steps.
- Hands-on experience with Salesforce and other industry-standard CS platforms.
- History of building strong relationships across executive, business, and technical stakeholders.
- Consistent internal advocacy for customers and ability to provide actionable feedback for Product and cross-functional teams.
- Habit of staying current on industry trends, CS best practices, and the competitive landscape.
- Startup experience.
- High EQ with strong verbal communication and technical writing skills.
- Self-motivated with a creative and analytical approach to problem-solving.
Bonus tacos if you have
- Customer success or sales experience focused on developer tools.
- Renewal management experience.
- Experience with Totango or a similar Customer Success platform (e.g. Gainsight, Pylon).
- Tinker with AI and the developer tools ecosystem (e.g. ChatGPT, Claude, Cursor).
- Hands-on familiarity with Kubernetes, cloud environments (AWS, GCP, Azure), or infrastructure as code tools such as Terraform.

INTERVIEW PROCESS
We believe that the interview process should be transparent, consistent, and enjoyable. We value your time and hope to complete the interview process in two to four weeks, if schedules allow. Through your interviews, you will meet a mix of individual contributors, managers, and senior leaders.
AI USE DURING THE INTERVIEW PROCESS
As an AI company, Coder embraces the use of AI tools, and we want to be transparent about our expectations as you navigate our interview process.
Not permitted: Using AI assistance during conversational interviews.
Permitted: Using AI tooling for take-home assessments. Please flag where and to what extent it was used in your take-home. Your submission will not be penalized for using AI as long as it is done honestly.
OUR USE OF AI IN HIRING
We use AI tools to help manage our recruitment process efficiently and fairly. Specifically:
- Ashby and Brainerr help us review inbound applications by surfacing candidates who best match the role requirements we've defined. This tool does not make hiring decisions; it helps our team prioritize which applications to review first.
- Granola takes notes during our interview calls so our team can focus on the conversation with you.
All hiring decisions are made by humans. Our team reviews applications, conducts interviews, and makes final selections. AI tools assist us but never replace human judgment, and these practices are conducted in compliance with applicable data protection, AI governance, and labor laws. Your data is not used to train AI models.
In accordance with New York City Local Law 144, an independent bias audit has been conducted on "Automated Employment Decision Tools"; results are available for Ashby https://www.ashbyhq.com/downloadables/ashby-bias-audit-08-2024.pdf.
If you're applying for a role at Coder and have questions about how we use AI in our process, or if you'd like to request information about the data we collect, please contact careers@coder.com.
