ABOUT MISTRAL
Mistral provides full-stack AI solutions: from frontier models to developer tools, applications, and compute. We partner with enterprises tackling the hardest problems across high-stakes industries like finance, manufacturing, defense, healthcare, and the public sector, co-creating customized AI systems that they can run on their terms.
We are a dynamic, collaborative team passionate about AI and its potential to transform society. Our diverse workforce thrives in competitive environments and is committed to driving innovation. Our teams are distributed between Europe, North America, Asia and the Middle East. We are creative, low-ego and team-spirited.
THE ROLE
As a Senior HR People Ops on the People Operations team at Mistral AI, you will be our UK people operations expert and the engine behind our EMEA expansion. This is a hands-on, high-ownership role for someone who thrives in ambiguity and wants to help build the operational backbone of a fast-growing AI company.
What makes this role unique: Mistral AI is actively expanding into new European markets. You will play a key part in that expansion — helping open new entities, set up local HR operations, and build scalable processes from the ground up. This is not a maintenance role; it is a builder's role.
The UK is the core of this role. You will be the UK people operations expert — the person the team turns to for UK employment law, contracts, benefits, payroll, right-to-work, and visa sponsorship.
Our main location for this role is London. That said, we are open to candidates based elsewhere in Europe — Amsterdam, the Netherlands, Germany, or any other location — provided you bring super strong, demonstrable experience in UK: employment law, contracts, benefits, payroll, right-to-work, and business sponsorships.
On top of owning the UK, you will help us expand into new EMEA countries — building HR operations from scratch as we grow across Europe.
WHAT YOU WILL DO
- Own UK people operations end to end — employment law, contracts, payroll, benefits, right-to-work, and visa sponsorship
- Lead EMEA expansion — open new country entities, set up local HR operations, and build scalable processes from scratch
- Oversee onboarding for new joiners, coordinating HR systems, IT setup, and office arrangements
- Formalize and manage employee contractual documentation throughout the employment lifecycle
- Maintain and update HR records, policies, and employee handbooks as regulations and company practices evolve
- Coordinate payroll with providers to ensure timely, accurate payments across the UK and EMEA
- Handle immigration requests, work permits, and related documentation — especially UK visa sponsorship
- Manage day-to-day HR inquiries, employee benefits administration, and time-off policies
- Ensure adherence to local employment laws, conduct compliance audits, and mitigate organizational risk
- Lead process improvements and collaborate with cross-functional partners, including Finance and Talent Acquisition
WHAT WE'RE LOOKING FOR
- 7–10 years of progressive HR / People Operations experience, ideally in a high-growth tech or startup environment
- Deep expertise in UK employment law and UK people operations — this is the single most important requirement. You should be confident advising on UK contracts, TUPE, ACAS processes, statutory benefits, right-to-work, and UK visa/immigration routes
- Demonstrated experience supporting EMEA expansion — ideally you have helped open new country entities, set up local HR operations, configured benefits and payroll in new markets, or scaled HR processes across multiple European countries
- Strong knowledge of at least 2 additional EMEA countries beyond the UK (e.g., Germany, Spain, Netherlands, Poland, France) — covering employment law basics, contract norms, and HR practices
- Familiarity with Employer of Record (EOR) models and when to use them vs. entity setup
- Hands-on payroll coordination experience — you have worked with payroll providers and ensured timely, accurate payments across multiple jurisdictions
- Proficiency with HRIS and payroll technology platforms — you are comfortable with tools and eager to optimize them
- Excellent communication, analytical, and problem-solving skills — you can navigate ambiguity, resolve employee relations matters, and provide clear, accurate HR guidance

Lead our effort to get Ubuntu fit for applications in automotive, aerospace, industrial robotics and other highly regulated environments.
Ubuntu is already the world’s most widely used Linux in general; we want to make it the world’s best choice for mission-critical systems in these sectors too.
To achieve this, we are investing in processes and engineering, tools and analysis, practices and people. Success in this effort will secure open-source software’s place at the highest tables in industry, where the complex demands of regulation, compliance and certification are demonstrably met.
We’re seeking for someone to lead this effort. In this role you will transform those complex demands into concrete outcomes, and in turn into engineering excellence values and practices that will bring those outcomes about.
This is not a paper exercise; it means leading and challenging engineering culture, working with teams across the organisation. Your work will make those practices come alive, at every level of engineering. You will bring a passion for engineering excellence and open-source software, and the ability to unify agile approaches across multiple projects and teams. Under your leadership, teams will adopt and internalise these values as their own.
Through your work, you will help define Canonical’s ways of working, collaborating with engineering leadership to describe and implement continuous improvement processes, and establish qualification requirements in support of engineering quality standards. You will define methods and approaches for measuring quality, and use them to shape and sharpen engineering culture.
Beyond Canonical, you will establish strategic relations with external working groups, committees and partners.
You will join the industrial standards team at Canonical and work closely with company-wide engineering leadership to define and deliver this vision.
Location:
This role may be held anywhere in European, Middle Eastern, African or Americas regions or time zones.
What we are looking for in you
You have a strong experience in engineering and process management in an agile environment
You have knowledge or certification of standards addressing quality of software artifacts such as ISO/IEC 25010 or ASPICE
You love developing and growing people and teams and have a track record of doing it
You have led successful compliance and certification efforts, understand well the process and stakeholders management required
You have experience with Linux

Background as a software developer
Experience in establishing product engineering development metrics and KPIs
Strong critical thinking and problem-solving skills

Canonical is building a comprehensive automation suite to provide multi-cloud and on-premise data solutions for the enterprise. The data platform team is a collaborative team that develops a full range of data stores and data technologies, spanning from big data, through NoSQL, cache-layer capabilities, and analytics; all the way to structured SQL engines.
We are facing the interesting problem of fault-tolerant mission-critical distributed systems and intend to deliver the world's best automation solution for delivering data platforms.
We have a number of openings ranging anywhere from junior to senior level. We will help you identify a suitable position depending on your experience and interests. Engineers who thrive at Canonical are mindful of open-source community dynamics and equally aware of the needs of large, innovative organisations.
Location: This role can be filled in European, Middle East and African time zones.
What your day will look like
The data platform team is responsible for the automation of data platform operations. This includes ensuring fault-tolerant replication, TLS, installation, and much more; but also provides domain-specific expertise on the actual data system to other teams within Canonical. This role is focused on the creation and automation of features of data platforms, not analysing the data in them.
Collaborate proactively with a distributed team
Write high-quality, idiomatic Python code to create new features
Debug issues and interact with upstream communities publicly
Work with helpful and talented engineers including experts in many fields
Discuss ideas and collaborate on finding good solutions
Work from home with global travel for 2 to 4 weeks per year for internal and external events
What we are looking for in you
Proven hands-on experience in software development using Python
Proven hands-on experience in distributed systems
Have a Bachelor’s or equivalent in Computer Science, STEM, or a similar degree
Willingness to travel up to 4 times a year for internal events
Additional skills that you might also bring
You might also bring a subset of experience from the following, which will determine the exact role and level we consider you for:
Experience
operating and managing data platform technologies like PostgreSQL, MySQL, MongoDB, OpenSearch, Kafka, Yugabyte, Trino, Superset, Atlas, Ranger, and Redis
Experience
with Linux systems administration, package management, and operations
Experience with the public cloud or a private cloud solution like OpenStack
Experience with operating Kubernetes clusters and a belief that it can be used for serious persistent data services
What we offer you
Your base pay will depend on various factors including your geographical location, level of experience, knowledge and skills.
