About the role
We are looking for a Principal Engineer to help define and drive the next generation of GitLab’s Fulfillment platform.
Fulfillment ensures that customers receive the right product access and can manage seats, usage, and spend across GitLab.com, Self-Managed, Dedicated, and other deployment models. Its core areas include entitlements, licensing and provisioning, seat management, usage visibility, and cost management.
The existing platform has served GitLab for approximately a decade and now faces significant challenges in scale, maintainability, and architectural complexity. This role will help us understand where we are today and define how Fulfillment should work over the next ten years.
This is a senior player-coach role. You will set architectural direction across the Fulfillment portfolio, make critical technical decisions, and work directly with teams to execute the resulting modernization strategy. You will influence across organizational boundaries while remaining hands-on in design, implementation, technical problem-solving, and mentorship.
What you’ll do
Define and communicate the long-term architecture and technical strategy for Fulfillment, including target state, principles, priorities, and migration sequencing.
Assess the current platform and address its most important risks across scale, reliability, performance, data correctness, operability, and maintainability.
Drive architectural decisions across entitlements, provisioning, seat management, usage visibility, and cost management.
Establish clear service boundaries, data ownership, contracts, and integration patterns across Fulfillment, Monetization, billing, Salesforce, and product services.
Lead an incremental modernization program that improves the existing platform while continuing to deliver customer and business value.
Partner with Engineering Managers, Product Management, and cross-functional stakeholders to turn architectural direction into executable roadmaps and shipped outcomes.
Be hands-on with the hardest problems, including prototypes, critical implementations, migrations, performance improvements, reliability work, and incident learning.
Champion practical artificial intelligence (AI) adoption across Fulfillment, including agentic coding and AI-assisted engineering workflows, and help teams apply these tools responsibly and effectively.
Mentor and coach Senior and Staff Engineers and raise the quality of technical decision-making across the organization.
What you’ll bring
10+ years of professional software engineering experience, including substantial experience at Staff, Principal, or equivalent technical leadership level.
Direct experience building, operating, or modernizing Fulfillment systems, including areas such as entitlements, licensing, provisioning, subscription lifecycle, seat management, usage metering, usage billing, or cost controls.
A track record of setting technical direction across multiple teams and turning architecture into reliable, operated systems.
Deep experience with distributed systems, scalability, availability, performance, observability, data integrity, and failure-mode analysis.
Comfort working in one or more of Ruby, Go, and Python, with the ability to navigate both Backend and Frontend in a polyglot system.
Practical experience using artificial intelligence in software engineering, including agentic coding or AI-assisted development workflows.
Demonstrated success modernizing mature or degraded platforms without relying on a risky “big bang” rewrite.
Experience designing systems that span multiple deployment models, such as software as a service, Self-Managed, Dedicated, or disconnected environments.
Strong product and business judgment, with the ability to connect technical investment to customer experience, revenue, operational efficiency, risk reduction, and time to market.
Excellent written communication and the ability to influence senior stakeholders across teams without formal authority.

An overview of this role
We are looking for a Backend Engineer to join our
Change Record
team within GitLab’s
Source Code stage
. As AI agents increasingly write code alongside people, every change needs a clear, trustworthy record of what changed, why, and who or what made it. You’ll build that record into GitLab’s source code experience, for humans and agents alike. This is a backend-focused role for an engineer with full-stack experience who enjoys balancing work on existing systems with new product development.
That work happens in one of GitLab’s oldest and most complex product areas, where you’ll use Ruby on Rails to improve a critical system serving GitLab.com, self-managed instances, and GitLab Dedicated. Source Code provides the interface layer, through Gitaly, to the Git repositories behind a large share of GitLab traffic, so you’ll help keep it reliable through performance tuning, caching, rate limiting, observability, and resiliency, collaborating with product, design, security, Gitaly, Code Review, and Source Code Experience teams. Supporting production systems and improving established experiences are central to the role, especially while you’re onboarding, and over time you’ll also help build experiences for developers working with agents.
You'll work remotely from the United Kingdom or Poland.
What you’ll do
Develop secure, well-tested, performant features and improvements using Ruby on Rails and GraphQL, among other technologies.
Work through complex requirements and legacy constraints to deliver clear solutions while protecting the reliability of this critical system.
Design and maintain backend services, APIs, data models, and business logic that support intuitive source code workflows.
Collaborate across functions and teams, both asynchronously and synchronously, and involve domain experts when their input will improve the outcome.
Use AI agents for well-scoped work when they can speed up delivery without sacrificing quality, and critically review their output.
Write maintainable code that follows GitLab's standards and contribute to constructive code reviews.
Help strengthen reliability by monitoring production health metrics, participating in Tier 2 on-call, troubleshooting incidents, contributing to root cause analysis, and improving observability and resiliency.
Share knowledge through code review, technical documentation, and everyday collaboration while learning from others.
What you’ll bring
Professional experience building backend web applications, services, or application programming interfaces, with experience using Ruby and GraphQL.
An understanding of relational databases, structured query language, data modeling, caching, background processing, and backend performance practices.
Experience with full-stack development to build and maintain user-facing workflows and their underlying systems.
Experience writing backend unit and integration tests, with familiarity with the testing pyramid, Git, and collaborative code review processes.
Clear written and spoken English communication skills, including sharing useful status updates in a remote, asynchronous environment.
The ability to manage assigned priorities, work through ambiguity, take ownership of your work, and seek guidance when needed.
Experience using AI coding agents to speed up software development while critically reviewing their output.
Bonus: you’ve built agents or agent-based workflows that run in production, not just prototypes.
About the team
The functional team works across Europe and North America, supporting both synchronous and asynchronous collaboration. It includes four engineers, comprising both backend and frontend engineers. We work closely with other Source Code teams, Agentic Preview, Repository Services, and Hardening, as well as other teams in the company such as the Gitaly team, and the AI Governance team.
The base salary range for this role’s listed level is currently for residents of the EU, applicable in the specified country or countries only. Sales roles are also eligible for incentive pay targeted at up to 100% of the offered base salary. Grade level and salary ranges are determined through interviews and a review of education, experience, knowledge, skills, abilities of the applicant, equity with other team members, alignment with market data, and geographic location and having regard to any applicable collective agreements. The base salary range does not include bonuses, equity, or benefits.

An overview of this role
As the Senior People Business Partner, Engineering, you'll be a strategic partner to senior Engineering leaders, including VPs and Senior Directors, helping them navigate change, mature their organizations, and build a healthy, high-performance culture. You'll focus on Engineering-specific challenges such as evolving job architecture and leveling, supporting executive leadership transitions, and driving consistency in how we develop, calibrate, and grow Engineering talent across distributed teams. In this role, you'll work globally, with a particular focus on supporting leaders across regions, and help make complex transformations clear and manageable for leaders and their teams.
You'll report into the PBP organization and work closely with peers across the team, including current and former Engineering PBPs, to shape how GitLab's Engineering function operates as we continue to grow. You'll be expected to build trust quickly with senior Engineering leaders, contribute to Engineering-wide processes such as calibrations and offsites, and help bring cohesion to a leadership team that includes both tenured GitLab team members and newer leaders. This role is a good fit if you enjoy a fast-paced tech environment, are comfortable with ambiguity and change, and want to make a visible impact on how Engineering teams are structured, supported, and set up to deliver results.
What You’ll Do
Partner with senior Engineering leaders, including VPs and Senior Directors, to understand their organizations, priorities, and challenges, and translate these into clear people and business priorities.
Drive and support job architecture changes in Engineering, including the introduction of new levels, to help leaders adopt and mature consistent role expectations and career paths.
Lead and facilitate key Engineering people processes, such as calibrations, in close partnership with the PBP team and cross-functional partners such as Talent Management.
Advise and coach Engineering leaders on topics such as organization design, change management, and navigating global teams, including regional considerations in EMEA.
Work closely with other PBPs and Talent partners to share insights, align on approaches, and provide a consistent, high-quality experience for Engineering leaders and their teams.
Use data and qualitative feedback to identify trends in the Engineering organization and recommend actions that improve effectiveness, engagement, and performance.
Support the planning and execution of Engineering offsites and other key forums so leaders can align on priorities, make decisions, and move work forward efficiently.
Drive key talent initiatives aligned with business outcomes.
What You’ll Bring
Experience as a People Business Partner or in a similar role supporting Engineering or technical organizations, ideally in a fast-paced tech environment of comparable size and complexity.
A track record of partnering with senior leaders, including Senior Directors and VPs, building trusted relationships, influencing decisions, and providing clear, data-informed guidance.
Experience supporting globally distributed teams, including working across multiple regions and time zones and navigating regional differences such as those in EMEA.
Demonstrated ability to help organizations navigate through change or transformation, such as job architecture updates, leadership transitions, or shifts in team structure and culture, while balancing strategic work such as organizational design, leadership effectiveness, and culture initiatives with hands-on execution of core People processes.
Strong coaching, communication and collaboration skills, including working asynchronously and partnering cross-functionally with Talent Acquisition, Total Rewards, and other People teams.
Openness to learning GitLab's ways of working and applying transferable experience from related domains, such as Product or IT, while developing a deeper understanding of Engineering needs.
Strong business acumen.
About the team
The Engineering People Business Partner (PBP) team supports GitLab's Engineering teams globally to build a high-performing, scalable, and globally distributed organization. You'll partner closely with senior leaders whose teams are based across the US and EMEA. You'll also collaborate asynchronously with other PBPs, Talent Management, and cross-functional partners to support organization design, performance and calibration processes, and ongoing culture and leadership development. An overview of this role
As a Customer Success Architect, you’ll be a strategic advisor to some of GitLab’s most important customers, helping them connect our DevSecOps platform to their business goals and realize meaningful, long-term outcomes. You’ll partner closely with customers after the sale to turn pre-sales command plans into concrete success plans, guide them along the customer journey, and drive hands-on enablement, adoption, utilization, and maturity. Reporting into a Senior Manager within our North America Customer Success organization, you’ll own a book of customers, act as their primary GitLab liaison for questions and escalations, and coordinate with Product Management, Engineering, Sales, Professional Services, and Support so customers can navigate complex technical and organizational challenges with confidence.
You’ll use your understanding of Git, software development lifecycles, and continuous integration, continuous deployment, and DevSecOps practices to help customers adopt best practices and stay current with new GitLab capabilities. In your first year, success looks like building strong, consultative relationships with key stakeholders, increasing adoption of the GitLab platform, and strengthening retention, growth, and customer satisfaction across your portfolio.
What you’ll do
Partner with customers to translate pre-sales command plans and desired business outcomes into actionable objectives and clear success criteria.
Guide customers on how to best use the GitLab platform, including common DevSecOps best practices, Git workflows, CI/CD, and adoption patterns.
Own a book of customers and drive adoption, retention, expansion, and overall satisfaction through ongoing strategic and technical engagement.
Build and maintain Customer Success Plans, define critical goals and key performance indicators, and track progress with customers over time.
Act as the primary GitLab liaison for assigned accounts, coordinating responses to questions, issues, and escalations across Support, Product Management, Sales, and Professional Services.
Provide hands-on technical enablement and onboarding, including education on new GitLab features, releases, and relevant use cases.
Program manage account escalations, ensuring root causes are understood, follow-up actions are owned, and stakeholders are informed.
Collaborate with Services and other internal teams to identify and recommend training, enablement, and maturity opportunities aligned to customer needs.
What you’ll bring
Practical understanding of Git, common branching strategies, and modern software development lifecycles.
Working knowledge of continuous integration, continuous deployment, and DevSecOps practices.
Experience partnering with customers to define business outcomes and translate them into actionable success plans, key goals, and measures.
Background in customer success, post-sales, or professional services roles focused on adoption, retention, and satisfaction.
Ability to manage a portfolio of customers, including handling escalations and coordinating across Support, Product Management, Sales, and Professional Services.
Strong communication, presentation, and organizational skills, with attention to detail and analytical thinking.
Experience planning and managing projects or initiatives in technical environments, including identifying training and enablement needs.
Alignment with GitLab’s values and interest in applying transferable skills from related roles or industries, with flexibility to travel as needed according to company policy.
About the team
We are part of GitLab’s Customer Success organization. Our mission is to help customers align the GitLab platform with their business objectives through hands-on technical enablement, driving adoption, utilization, and DevSecOps maturity while building strong, consultative relationships. As Customer Success Architects, we act as trusted advisors and key liaisons between customers and the broader GitLab ecosystem, collaborating closely with Product Management, Engineering, Sales, Support, and Professional Services to address questions, guide roadmaps, and navigate escalations. We work in an all-remote, asynchronous way, coordinating across time zones to support a focused set of strategic accounts and ensure long-term customer success.

An overview of this role
As a Subject Matter Expert (SME), you'll be the deepest technical voice in the field for one product group, helping customers make technical decisions on GitLab's most important opportunities, roughly the top 10% by size or complexity.
Account Solutions Architects (Account SAs) will bring you into prioritized opportunities. The Account SA owns the opportunity; you own your product group's success within it. You'll work directly with Product and Engineering, bringing customer needs and field insights into roadmap discussions. You'll also help the wider Solutions Architecture team build expertise through reusable assets, enablement, and coaching.
You'll specialize in one product group, not all four. In Security & Compliance, you'll focus on GitLab Ultimate, application security, Dependency Firewall, software supply chain security, compliance, and artificial intelligence (AI) governance. In Platform, you'll focus on GitLab Dedicated, self-managed deployments, bring your own model, and cloud and hybrid architecture. In Core DevSecOps, you'll focus on GitLab Premium, continuous integration and continuous delivery (CI/CD), source code management, Orbit, Artifact Central, and migrations. DevSecOps brings development, security, and operations together across software delivery. In AI & Competitive, you'll focus on GitLab Duo Agent Platform, agentic workflows, AI-native development, competitive displacement including GitHub, and migrations.
Your success will be measured by technical win rate and bookings on SME-engaged opportunities, product-category commit attainment and consumption growth in your region, and Proof of Value (PoV) conversion rate, evaluation cycle time, and time from technical win to production use. We'll also measure how often Account SAs reuse your assets, their confidence in handling your product group without escalation, and the quality and impact of your feedback to Product.
What you’ll do
Act as the technical authority for your product group on prioritized opportunities, from discovery and architecture through trials and PoV evaluations.
Lead technical deep dives, workshops, and executive briefings that connect product capabilities to business outcomes and explain how GitLab differs from competing solutions.
Design and improve standardized PoV templates with clear, repeatable success criteria. Account SAs own the customer PoV; you'll contribute product-specific content and expertise while keeping the evaluation connected to the broader GitLab platform.
Equip account teams for product launches with Product Management and Product Marketing. Build demos and talk tracks, and turn early customer wins into reference stories.
Serve as the escalation point for Account SAs and Post-Sales Solutions Architects (Post-Sales SAs) on complex product questions, integrations, and objections.
Hand off PoV success criteria and architecture decisions to the Post-Sales SA with the account team when an opportunity closes. Stay involved until the customer's first production workload uses the product, and support complex accounts when Post-Sales SAs bring you in to drive adoption and consumption.
Bring structured field feedback, competitive insights, and customer requirements to Product Management and Engineering with the wider SME team. Help manage early-access and design-partner programs, and represent GitLab through customer events, conferences, industry working groups, and published content.
Build reference architectures, demo environments, competitive battlecards, PoV playbooks, and enablement content so account teams can handle more opportunities without your direct involvement. Mentor Account SAs and contribute to GitLab's global SME community of practice.
What you’ll bring
Substantial experience in technical pre-sales, solutions architecture, consulting, or software engineering, with deep, hands-on expertise in one domain: application security testing, supply chain security, and compliance; scalable cloud and hybrid platforms; large CI/CD environments and source code migrations; or production AI-assisted development, working prototypes, and competitive evaluations.
Practical expertise in agentic and AI-assisted development workflows across planning, coding, testing, security, and delivery, applied in a customer-facing, pre-sales context.
Experience winning technical decisions on large, complex enterprise opportunities through structured Proof of Concept (PoC) or PoV evaluations with defined success criteria and executive sign-off.
Hands-on experience with Git, CI/CD, containers, Kubernetes, and at least one major cloud provider.
The ability to lead a whiteboard session with engineers and present the business case to executives in the same meeting.
Strong written communication, including the ability to turn complex topics into clear playbooks that others use.
Comfort working asynchronously across time zones with Sales, Product, and Engineering.
Optional: public speaking, published technical content, open source contributions, or relevant certifications in Kubernetes, cloud architecture, or security.
If you bring transferable experience in an adjacent domain, we encourage you to apply.
