Company Description
We’re http://checkout.comCheckout.com http://Checkout.com. You might not know our name, but companies like eBay, Spotify, Klarna, Uber, and Sony do, because we’re behind many of the digital experiences you use every day.
We are where the world checks out, enabling over 10 billion transactions yearly for more than one billion global shoppers.
Whether you want to book a holiday, order food, renew a subscription, or check out online, there’s a good chance our tech powers the payments behind the scenes. Our platform helps the most ambitious businesses deliver effortless digital experiences, at scale.
If you want to do career-defining work, you’ve come to the right place. We move fast, think globally, and believe great teams are built by hiring exceptional people with conviction, curiosity, and the desire to make an impact.
With 20 offices across six continents and London as our HQ, we’re shaping the future of fintech – and we’re just getting started.
Checkout.com http://Checkout.com will grow you faster than you expect - the deals, the pace, and the people demand it. If you've ever felt a role never let you show what you're truly capable of, this is the opposite problem: meaningful deals with some of the UK's and the world's biggest brands, real autonomy, and no ceiling on what you can take on.
You'll join the Solutions team in London and own the technical side of deals from first conversation to go-live. Pre-sale, you're front and centre: positioning the platform, building demos and POCs, winning over the merchant's engineers and architects while your Account Executive drives the commercial thread. Once the deal is ready, the weight shifts: our Implementation Engineers lead the build and you stay close, so your designs survive contact with reality.
You'll work on a modern, fast-moving platform with docs that answer your questions, alongside one of the strongest commercial teams in payments.
People who do well here are curious by default: they pull threads, teach themselves what the job needs next, and act before anyone asks. If that's how you work, you'll like it here.
What you will be doing:
- Support the commercial team to position Checkout.com http://Checkout.com's products, solutions, and services - and win deals. You'll be a key partner to Account Executives on product, payments, regulation, and tech.
- Understand merchant requirements and technical needs, map them to our APIs and products, create solution designs and internal documentation.
- Run demos, build "show-me" payment flows, create POCs, customise and create presentations.
- Provide thought leadership on all aspects of Payment Performance - Acceptance Rate, Fraud Prevention, Tokenisation, Payment Methods, and others.
- Lead all technical interactions with merchants - chats, calls, meetings, and workshops - from first contact through go-live, partnering with our Implementation Engineers during integration.
- Support the BID management team with RFP and RFI responses.
- Enable internal functions, commercial and tech, with market and merchant feedback on product capabilities. Champion product change and improvement.
- Stay up to date with industry standards, solutions, and tech.
- Be an expert on Checkout.com http://Checkout.com's platform and products.
About You:
If the list below looks like you, apply.
Experience
- 2+ years as a Sales Engineer, Solutions Architect, Pre-Sales Consultant, Implementation Engineer, or TAM. At a PSP or payments company is a bonus.
- Merchant-side counts too: checkout engineering, an in-house payments team, a payments product role.
- Experience in a technical, client-facing role.
Payments and technical skills
We need real depth in one of the two areas below and the appetite to close the gap on the other. If payments is your strength, this job will make you more technical, you'll need to want that. Strong coder lighter on payments: payments can be taught, you'll have time.
Payments:
- Understanding of the end-to-end payment flow and the industry's rules, regulations, and schemes.
- Experience with 3DS, Network Tokenisation, Apple/Google Pay, APMs, Open Banking, or fraud-risk engines.
Tech:
- You can code and you're comfortable with web technologies - payments run on the web. At least one front-end (JavaScript, React, Angular) or back-end (Java, .NET, Python, Node) language.
- Familiar with API-based integration (REST/JSON, Postman); can reproduce, isolate, and explain issues using logs, API responses, and tests.
How you work
- Clear written and verbal English; equally at home with developers and product teams as with payments, finance, and C-level stakeholders.
- Commercially minded: you talk revenue, volume, and pricing, not just APIs, and push deals forward without being asked.
- Highly organised; able to prioritise shifting workloads.
Nice to have:
- Previous exposure to RFI/RFP processes.
- Familiarity with PSD2/PSD3/PSR, FCA, ISO-8583.
- An additional language.
- Former engineering, developer, or product manager background.
- Prior roles in the e-commerce industry.

ABOUT THE ROLE:
Notion is shaping the future of Go-To-Market, and as a Solutions Consultant (SC), you’ll bring that future to life by building alongside customers and turning their biggest challenges into measurable outcomes. As a customer-facing, quota-carrying SC, you’ll bring together technical fluency and commercial ownership to grow your book of business. You’ll build pipeline with BDRs, engage key stakeholders, lead discovery, co-build workflow solutions live with customers, and guide opportunities through close. You’ll connect each solution to a clear business case and stay engaged through adoption, expansion, and renewal so customers realize the value of what they buy.
You’ll partner with BDRs, Outcomes Architects, and technical or product specialists while maintaining clear ownership of customer relationships, opportunity momentum, and next steps. If you’re a builder who loves to sell—and want to work at the intersection of AI, productivity, and enterprise—this is the role.
WHAT YOU'LL ACHIEVE:
- Create pipeline across your book of business. Build target-account plans with BDRs and initiate outreach to priority stakeholders to generate qualified opportunities, alongside BDR-sourced pipeline.
- Own opportunities from first conversation through close. Lead discovery, qualify business needs and urgency, align stakeholders, shape the solution and business case, and drive the evaluation and commercial decision. Navigate commercial sizing, proposal construction, procurement, legal, and security review to close deals with the right scope, credits, and implementation path.
- Design and validate workflow solutions that deliver measurable value. Map current- and future-state workflows, co-build solutions live in Notion, and define realistic scope, success criteria, and an implementation path. Translate customer needs and validated outcomes into a clear business case, commercial recommendation, and decision path. Treat discovery as an opportunity to build and validate.
- Orchestrate the right partners while maintaining ownership. Engage BDRs, Outcomes Architects, and technical or product specialists at the right moments, with clear context and asks, while owning opportunity momentum, customer communication, and next steps.
- Drive customer value and commercial growth after signature. Partner with Outcomes Architects, guide the initial path to value with a clear adoption plan, on onboarding and ongoing multi-workflow adoption, and own expansion strategy and renewal planning. Stay accountable for translating credits sold into credits consumed, and surface risks or expansion opportunities as customer workflows mature.
SKILLS YOU'LL NEED TO BRING:
- Fluency in Italian
- Commercial ownership and pipeline generation. You can demonstrate how you created or advanced business, influenced customer decisions, and owned measurable outcomes. Relevant experience may come from quota-carrying sales or adjacent customer-facing roles.
- Technical fluency and builder mindset. You are comfortable building live in software and can demo, co-design, and troubleshoot with a customer without needing a specialist in the room.
- AI fluency. You are excited about AI, build with new tools, and continually learn new ways of working.
- Discovery, qualification, and value articulation. You can uncover customer needs, map workflows, qualify business impact and urgency, and translate what you learn into commercial outcomes, adoption plans, and clear success criteria.
- Agency, urgency, and learning velocity. You set clear goals, take initiative, learn from customer interactions, and apply those learnings to improve outcomes. You bring new ideas and workflows to customers and make complex problems easier to solve.
- Complex customer engagement. You can lead multi-stakeholder interactions and navigate procurement, legal, and security review cycles.
NICE TO HAVES:
- Full-cycle B2B software sales experience or solutions engineering experience, with a consistent track record of exceeding quota across new-logo acquisition and expansion motions.
- Familiarity with usage-based or consumption-based pricing models and the ability to structure credit-based commercial proposals.
- Prior experience selling to commercial accounts in productivity, collaboration, or workflow software.
- Experience in a shared account ownership model, partnering with a post-sale or Customer Success team as part of an integrated customer motion.
We hire talented and passionate people from a variety of backgrounds because we want our global employee base to represent the wide diversity of our customers. If you're excited about a role but your past experience doesn't align perfectly with every bullet point listed in the job description, we still encourage you to apply. If you're a builder at heart, share our company values, and are enthusiastic about making software toolmaking ubiquitous, we want to hear from you.

THE ROLE
As a Research Engineer on the Latency & Throughput team, you will push the frontier of LLM inference by researching and prototyping techniques that reduce latency and increase throughput — from speculative decoding and quantization to KV compression and new attention variants. The team sits at the intersection of research and production: you will take ideas from recent literature, form hypotheses, run experiments, and ship the techniques that prove out into our serving stack.
This role sits between our inference engineers, who own the production serving stack, and our research scientists, who focus on paper-level contributions. You will be more science-focused than a pure engineer: you are expected to generate new ideas, keep up with the state of the art, and implement proof-of-concepts that bridge the gap between academic results and production impact. Some techniques you explore will be lossy or require integration into training — retraining models, tuning architectures, or training auxiliary models to improve inference.
You will work closely with the Inference Foundation and Kernels teams, who turn your validated techniques into production recipes, and with pretraining and RL teams when your work touches model training. Success is measured by demonstrated latency or throughput gains, first at small scale, then adopted in production.
What You Will Do
- Research and prototype inference techniques — speculative decoding, quantization, KV compression, watermarking, and new model architectures — by reading recent literature and forming testable hypotheses.
- Design and run experiments to validate or refute ideas, iterating quickly on small-scale setups before proposing production integration. Demonstrate clear latency or throughput gains without unacceptable quality loss.
- Collaborate with the Inference Foundation team to integrate validated techniques into the vLLM-based serving stack.
- Partner with pretraining and RL teams when techniques require co-training, retraining, or training auxiliary models to improve inference.
Build the right tooling and validation platforms to facilitate AI-driven inference research.
What We're Looking For
- A strong ML background with solid knowledge of LLM training techniques — architecture, tokenization, fine-tuning, and evaluation.
- Hands-on experience with Python and PyTorch; you write clean, experimental code and iterate fast. JAX is acceptable with strong Python proficiency. C++ and Rust are not required, CUDA and GPU knowledge is expected but hands-on experience is not required.
- Research experience of some form: a thesis, publications, a dedicated research project, or efficiency-oriented work in a lab or industry research setting. A PhD is not required, but we are looking for genuine research depth.
- A track record of conducting experiments: forming hypotheses, designing controlled comparisons, and drawing clear conclusions from results.
- Familiarity with the state of the art in LLM inference — you know what has been tried, what works, and where the open problems are.
- Self-starter, low-ego, and collaborative. You are comfortable with ambiguity, negative results, and are eager to take matters into your own hands.
- Inference or serving experience is a plus, not a requirement. Prior work with vLLM, production LLM deployments, or serving systems will help you ramp up faster.
Location and Remote
This role is based in our Paris or London offices (hybrid). We will prioritize candidates who reside in the Paris area or are open to relocating. We strongly believe in the value of in-person collaboration to foster strong relationships and seamless communication within our team. For senior profiles, we will also consider remote candidates based in France. In that case, we ask all new hires to visit our Paris office:
- For the first week of their onboarding (accommodation and travel covered)
- Then at least 3 days per month

Requirements
We're looking for a Senio/Staff-level engineer with an open mind and a builder's instinct - someone who goes beyond executing tasks and is ready to own the High-Performance practice end-to-end: establish engineering processes, drive R&D, evaluate and champion new technologies, and lead their adoption in production.
The ideal candidate can bridge the gap between business requirements for low latency and high throughput and the realities of existing infrastructure - translating "we need to be faster" into an actionable technical roadmap. You bring a fresh perspective, know how to organize the work, and are equally comfortable optimizing a hardware parameter and presenting a strategy to stakeholders.
We expect 5+ years of hands-on experience as a DevOps/SRE/Systems Engineer in performance-critical environments - and the maturity to grow yourself and grow a team around you.
Linux:
Advanced administration and OS-level tuning — real-time OS configurations, cgroups, CPU isolation, memory management, and low-level network stack configuration.
Hardware Internals:
Deep understanding of CPU power and performance states (C/P-states), Hyper-Threading / SMT trade-offs, TX/RX ring configuration, and the full data path from NIC through PCIe to memory and CPU. Ability to reason about and tune each stage of that path under production load.
Networking & TCP Internals:
Deep knowledge of TCP/IP — congestion control, ACK behavior, buffer tuning, and protocol-level latency sources. Strong Linux networking fundamentals: low-latency NIC configuration, bypass networking technologies (DPDK, RDMA), and market connectivity (multicast feeds, co-location networks, VPNs).
Performance Engineering:
Practical experience profiling latency-sensitive systems; familiarity with tools such as perf, flamegraph, strace, tcpdump, eBPF, and hardware performance counters.
Containerization:
Deep knowledge of Docker and Kubernetes, including low-overhead deployment patterns and performance trade-offs of containerized workloads.
IaC:
Proven track record with Ansible, Terraform, and Helm in production environments.
Monitoring:
Hands-on experience with the Prometheus / Grafana stack; ability to build latency-aware dashboards and alerting (P99, jitter, throughput KPIs).
Scripting:
Solid scripting in Bash and Python; Golang is a strong plus given its role in systems tooling.
CI/CD & Secret Management:
Strong grasp of CI/CD pipelines with experience integrating performance validation stages; familiarity with Vault for secrets management.
Security:
Understanding of DevSecOps principles and Kubernetes security policies.
Key Performance Metrics You'll Work With
Latency Distribution
- P99 / P99.9 across the tick-to-trade path, using hardware-level timestamps (NIC/PTP).
Jitter
- variance between min/max latency, measured over large sample sets in live market conditions.
Throughput
- messages per second (orders + cancels) under exchange burst scenarios.
System Reliability
- сontinuous monitoring of uptime
Extra Credit / Big Pluses
Hands-on experience with kernel-level optimization: syscall reduction, network stack bypass (DPDK, RDMA, Solarflare OpenOnload).
Background in HFT, algorithmic trading, or other ultra-low-latency production environments.
Experience with hardware timestamping, PTP/IEEE 1588, and precision time synchronization.
Familiarity with colocation operations and exchange connectivity (cross-connects, proximity hosting).
Proven SRE track record with formal SLO/error budget frameworks in latency-sensitive contexts.
DevSecOps: vulnerability scanning, Zero Trust, RBAC, and secure delivery pipelines.
Understanding of business processes in FinTech, crypto, or electronic trading.
Responsibilities
Low-Latency Infrastructure Ownership:
Design, deploy, and continuously optimize infrastructure for latency-sensitive trading systems — market data handlers, order/deal gateways, and risk check engines. Own the full stack from bare metal to application delivery. Define and maintain a reference architecture for low-latency connectivity when onboarding new trading venues, including reproducible configuration baselines, validation procedures, and performance acceptance criteria — so every new venue goes live on a proven, optimized stack.
Cloud & Hybrid Network Connectivity:
Design, implement, and maintain complex low-latency network solutions for cloud provider interconnects - including cross-connects and Direct Connect / ExpressRoute links between cloud regions, hybrid on-premise/cloud topologies, and high-throughput inter-server fabrics. Ensure both latency minimization and fault tolerance at every layer: physical redundancy, failover routing, and path diversity across providers and regions.
Hardware & OS Stack Tuning:
Go deep on the full hardware and OS stack - CPU pinning, C/P-states, HT/SMT configuration, NUMA topology, IRQ affinity, TX/RX ring sizing, NIC offloading, and network stack bypass (DPDK/RDMA where applicable). Understand the complete data path from NIC through PCIe to memory and CPU - and optimize every hop.
Infrastructure as Code (IaC):
Automate provisioning and configuration of high-performance environments using Ansible, Terraform, and Helm - with performance reproducibility as a first-class requirement.
Latency Profiling & Benchmarking:
Systematically profile and debug latency hotspots across the full execution path. Establish and maintain SLA/SLO targets; track P99/P99.9 distributions, jitter, and throughput - not just averages.
CI/CD for Performance:
Build and maintain CI/CD pipelines that include automated latency regression testing, so performance degradations are caught before they hit production.
Monitoring & Observability:
Design and operate comprehensive latency monitoring and alerting systems (Prometheus, VictoriaMetrics, Grafana) - including hardware timestamping (NIC/PTP) and fine-grained performance telemetry.
Colocation & Network Placement:
Research, evaluate, and manage optimal server placements - colocations, cross-connects, proximity hosting. Work closely with network and infrastructure teams to minimize physical and logical distance to exchanges.
High Availability & DRP:
Design systems that maintain stability and reliability under peak load while continuously pushing latency lower - zero regressions, always.
Cross-Team Collaboration:
Work alongside algo developers, quant teams, and network engineers to ensure trading strategies execute with minimal infrastructure overhead.
