As one of the fastest-growing areas of Automattic, with recent FedRAMP certification, WordPress VIP (WPVIP) is expanding its reach into the public sector.
About the role:
Your style is to listen and learn from prospects, positioning WordPress VIP as the best Content Management System for public sector organizations. You don’t sit and wait for leads to come to you. Instead, you research the market, identify opportunities within specific government agencies and public sector verticals, and design a sales strategy that is both high-touch and creative, thereby helping to create the best possible positioning to develop new business for WordPress VIP.
You view government agencies and public sector organizations as critical parts of society, and you can see how WordPress VIP and Automattic can help them along their journeys. You pride yourself in establishing long-term relationships and doing what’s best for the customer. You enjoy telling stories, doing demos, giving “the pitch,” and are comfortable talking to CIOs, CTOs, and other high-level government officials.
Our Public Sector team is small and agile, requiring team members to be highly hands-on and versatile. You’ll work closely with SDRs and have full leverage of our Marketing teams to create compelling outreach and content, but you’ll also be generating your own leads alongside that. You should be ready to dive deep into the details, including writing and understanding complex paperwork and RFPs.
Responsibilities:
Drive significant revenue growth by securing new public sector clients and expanding existing government accounts.
Establish and nurture strategic relationships with high-level government officials that position our company as a critical technology partner.
Successfully manage both transactional deals and large multimillion-dollar opportunities within the constraints of government procurement processes.
Develop strategies to increase visibility and create opportunities within the public sector market.
Maintain accurate sales forecasts and pipeline information, and drive strategic improvement of forecasting processes in the public sector market.
Develop and execute innovative, public sector-specific sales strategies that accelerate market penetration in government agencies.
Actively engage in pipeline generation activities, including regular outbound prospecting to government organizations.
Enhance the product offering by providing valuable customer insights to inform our solution roadmap.
Elevate WordPress VIP’s brand and reputation in the government enterprise SaaS space through high-impact engagements.
Contribute to a high-performing sales culture by sharing best practices and mentoring team members.
Prepare and review complex government paperwork, including RFPs, ensuring compliance and competitiveness.
Requirements:
7+ years of enterprise software sales experience, preferably in SaaS or CMS-related technologies.
5+ years of SaaS sales experience selling to State and Local Government agencies.
Demonstrated ability to consistently meet or exceed sales quotas.
Strong understanding of SaaS and enterprise software and IT landscapes. Content management systems experience is a plus.
Excellent communication, presentation, and negotiation skills.
Proven experience in solutions-based selling and closing enterprise-level deals with government agencies.
Ability to establish and maintain long-term customer relationships.

WordPress doesn’t try to keep its users inside walled gardens, a rare thing in a world that is dangerously moving away from the open web. Instead, WordPress gives them the freedom to build a business website, an online store, or a personal blog – the way they like it. Big sites or small, using the community-run
open source project
or Automattic’s
WordPress.com
, vanilla or customized with hundreds of plugins, WordPress users always get to own and control their data, their expression, and their freedom.
We’re always looking for talented and experienced engineers worldwide, excited to help Automattic’s product ecosystem, and join our mission to make the web a better place.
What have we worked on recently?
AI is at the heart of many
new product developments

We welcome collaboration, and you can be involved in any discussion across our many communication channels.
We encourage you to learn and develop and we support you with what you need – covering expenses, easy internal mobility, coaching.
Enough about us, let‘s talk more about you. Working at Automattic might be a good fit if:
You care and often obsess over the quality and the details of your work.
Debugging any problem is a fun challenge and not a chore.
Understanding the layers of abstraction below and above your work isn't something extra, but how you operate.
You have production experience with several programming languages, frameworks, and paradigms. We mostly use PHP and JavaScript at Automattic, we expect you to be comfortable with the idea of becoming an expert in these languages, even if being one isn't a requirement to apply.
In your mind abstraction is associated as much with cost as it is with value.
You have experience working at scale – it can be on the backend and performance side, or via the complexity of interacting with a multi-million diverse userbase.
Are open and able to travel 3-4 weeks per year to meet up with your teammates in person.
These are exciting times at Automattic and you’ll have a unique opportunity to shape the future of our products. Join us! We look forward to hearing from you.

ABOUT US
Sierra is the leading platform for customer-facing AI agents, working with many of the world's biggest brands — including The GAP, Rocket Mortgage, SoFi, Sutter Health, and SoftBank — to transform how they serve customers and grow their businesses. We are primarily an in-person company based in San Francisco, with growing offices across North America, Europe, and Asia.
We are guided by a set of values that are at the core of our actions and define our culture: Trust, Customer Obsession, Craftsmanship, Intensity, and a commitment to balancing Family along the way. These values are the foundation of our work, and we are committed to upholding them in everything we do.
Our co-founders are Bret Taylor https://www.linkedin.com/in/brettaylor/ and Clay Bavor https://www.linkedin.com/in/claybavor/. Bret currently serves as Board Chair of OpenAI. Previously, he was co-CEO of Salesforce (which had acquired the company he founded, Quip) and CTO of Facebook. Bret was also one of Google's earliest product managers and co-creator of Google Maps. Before founding Sierra, Clay spent 18 years at Google, where he most recently led Google Labs. Earlier, he started and led Google’s AR/VR effort, Project Starline, and Google Lens. Before that, Clay led the product and design teams for Google Workspace.
WHAT YOU'LL DO
- Build Sierra’s platform. At Sierra, we believe agent development is an evolution of software development that requires new tools and systems. You will work on the platform primitives that power how agents are built, orchestrated, and deployed.
- Invent the foundations of agent development. You’ll design systems that enable engineers and customers to build reliable, steerable agents, including runtime systems, developer tooling, and internal infrastructure.
- Enable engineers to move faster. You’ll build tools and workflows that accelerate how engineers build and deploy agents across Sierra.
WHAT YOU'LL BRING
- A passion for being on the frontier of AI products.
- Pride in building reliable, maintainable, and secure systems that scale.
- Motivation and high-agency to drive outcomes in a high-autonomy culture.
- 4+ years hands-on experience building production systems.
- Degree in Computer Science or related field, or equivalent professional experience.
EVEN BETTER
- Experience building developer platforms or SDKs.
- Experience working on distributed systems.
- Experience building AI-powered products.
- Leadership experience on technical projects.
OUR VALUES
- Trust: We build trust with our customers with our accountability, empathy, quality, and responsiveness. We build trust in AI by making it more accessible, safe, and useful. We build trust with each other by showing up for each other professionally and personally, creating an environment that enables all of us to do our best work.
- Customer Obsession: We deeply understand our customers’ business goals and relentlessly focus on driving outcomes, not just technical milestones. Everyone at the company knows and spends time with our customers. When our customer is having an issue, we drop everything and fix it.
- Craftsmanship: We get the details right, from the words on the page to the system architecture. We have good taste. When we notice something isn’t right, we take the time to fix it. We are proud of the products we produce. We continuously self-reflect to continuously self-improve.
- Intensity: We know we don’t have the luxury of patience. We play to win. We care about our product being the best, and when it isn’t, we fix it. When we fail, we talk about it openly and without blame so we succeed the next time.
- Family: We know that balance and intensity are compatible, and we model it in our actions and processes. We are the best technology company for parents. We support and respect each other and celebrate each other’s personal and professional achievements.
WHAT WE OFFER
We want our benefits to reflect our values and offer the following to full-time employees:
- Flexible (unlimited) paid time off
- Medical, dental, and vision benefits for you and your family
- Life insurance and disability benefits

Eligible full-time employees can participate in Sierra's equity plans subject to the terms of the applicable plans and policies.
BE YOU, WITH US
