1Password is growing. We’ve surpassed $500M in ARR and we’re continuing to accelerate, earning a spot on the Forbes Cloud 100 for four years in a row and teaming up with iconic partners like Oracle Red Bull Racing.
About 1Password
At 1Password, we’re building the foundation for a safe, productive digital future. Our mission is to unleash employee productivity without compromising security by ensuring every identity is authentic, every application sign-in is secure, and every device is trusted. We innovated the market-leading enterprise password manager and pioneered Unified Access Management, a new cybersecurity category built for the way people and AI agents work today. As one of the most loved brands in cybersecurity, we take a human-centric approach in everything from product strategy to user experience. Over 180,000 businesses, from Fortune 100 leaders to the world’s most innovative AI companies, trust 1Password to help their teams securely adopt the SaaS and AI tools they need to do their best work.
If you're excited about the opportunity to contribute to the digital safety of millions, to work alongside a team of curious, driven individuals, and to solve hard problems in a fast-paced, dynamic environment, then we want to hear from you. Come join us and help shape a safer, simpler digital future.
Device Infrastructure Services owns the full lifecycle of hardware and operating systems across 1Password. The team is looking for the Staff Engineer who will lead its next chapter: a deliberate shift from legacy device management patterns towards devops and AI-enabled operations.
You'll be the technical leader of this team, responsible for setting the roadmap for this transformation and making sure it gets executed. This isn't a role where you hand off a roadmap and step back: you'll be in the build alongside the team, coaching engineers and raising the ceiling on what they're capable of. If you're excited by building scalable systems, shaping the strategy behind tools the whole company depends on, and bringing out the best work in the people around you, we want to hear from you.
How we’re using AI today
Our Engineering, Product, and Design teams are thoughtfully integrating AI across the full software and product development lifecycle to move faster without sacrificing quality or security. In practice, that looks like engineers using AI-assisted coding tools to accelerate reviews and catch bugs earlier, product managers synthesizing user research at scale, and designers rapidly prototyping and iterating with AI-generated mockups. We approach AI the same way we approach security: with clear principles, human accountability at every consequential decision point, and rigorous evaluation before anything ships to customers.
This is a remote opportunity within Canada and the US.
What we're looking for:
- 7+ years of IT and enterprise endpoint management experience, including 2+ years at a senior or staff IC level, with a track record of building and managing endpoints with Gitops practices.
- Demonstrate broad knowledge of enterprise endpoint management, deep operating system-level experience, and the ability to recognize patterns across a fleet and build fixes that prevent recurrence.
- Practical experience using AI tools to enable or accelerate IT operations and the judgment to know where AI speeds things up versus where it introduces risk.
- Proven ability to define and drive technical roadmaps, seeing around corners and balancing long-term vision with near-term execution.
- Strong scripting and IaC ability (Bash, Python, and Terraform at minimum) — both writing production-quality automation yourself and reviewing others' code with a critical eye.
- Deep working knowledge of enterprise security fundamentals as they apply to endpoints: encryption, patch/vulnerability management, EDR, least-privilege enforcement, and compliance frameworks (SOC 2, ISO 27001, or similar).
- Lead through change, collaborate effectively, and mentor engineers while maintaining a focused and impactful team environment.
What you can expect:
- Own the technical direction of our Device Infrastructure Services, the tooling and standards that keep ~2,000 endpoints compliant, configured, and secure.
- Drive the technical direction of a DevOps operating model for the fleet — config-as-code, version control, code review, and CI/CD pipelines in place of manual console changes — and drive adoption of that model across the IT team.
- Lead the adoption of responsible agentic AI across the device team, building the guardrails that decide what agents can act on autonomously and what still needs a human checkpoint.
- Act as the final escalation point for high-severity endpoint incidents, including deep machine-level diagnosis on both macOS and Windows hardware.
- Partner across IT, Security, and product teams building custom solutions and helping push their initiatives across the finish line.
- Assess and pilot new tooling (e.g., MDM platform migrations, patch management systems) and drive build-vs-buy decisions.
- Collaborate with product teams to advise on features from the perspective of a real-world enterprise device deployment, and lead Customer Zero initiatives — piloting and stress-testing our own product against our internal fleet before it reaches customers.
What success looks like:
- Establishing a clear 12-month roadmap for the transition to a GitOps-based operating model.
- Building device health metrics and remediation standards for machine security, performance, and employee experience.
- Developing our AI-assisted operations strategy, with automation milestones that balance speed, human review, security and agentic workflows.
- Supporting the unpredictable release cadence of major OS vendors, and making sure those updates land safely across the org.
- Bringing the team along with you — at 1Password, we Put People First. This role isn't just about leveling up what we can do technically, it's also about coaching the team along the way.
USA-based roles only: The annual base salary for this role is between $143,000 USD and $207,000 USD, plus immediate participation in 1Password's benefits program (health, dental, 401k and many others), utilization of our generous paid time off, an equity grant and, where applicable, participation in our incentive programs.
Canada-based roles only: The annual base salary for this role is between $122,000 CAD and $177,000 CAD, plus immediate participation in 1Password’s generous benefits program (health, dental, RRSP and many others), utilization of our generous paid time off, an equity grant and, where applicable, participation in our incentive programs.
At 1Password, we approach each individual's compensation with a promise of fair market value and internal equity commensurate with experience and specific skill set.
This posting is for an existing vacancy.
Our culture
At 1Password, we prioritize collaboration, clear and transparent communication, receptiveness to feedback, and alignment with our core values: keep it simple, lead with honesty, and put people first.
You’ll be part of a team that challenges the status quo, and is excited to experiment and iterate in search of the best solution. That said, 1Password is not for everyone https://blog.1password.com/inside-the-culture-powering-1passwords-next-chapter/. Our work is demanding, we strive for excellence, and the pace is fast. We need people who are keen to take on challenging problems, who seek feedback to grow, and who are driven to make an impact. If you're looking for a place where you can settle into a comfortable routine, this might not be the right fit for you. We’re looking for individuals who are proven experts in their fields, as well as those who are highly adaptable, can thrive in ambiguity and through change, are curious, and above all deliver results.
How we work with AI
We are committed to leveraging cutting-edge technology—including AI—to achieve our mission. We also understand that thinking critically about AI in its current forms will help us create better solutions for our customers and ourselves with its future forms, which will help us continue to close the gap between security and privacy and achieve our mission. We want team members at all levels to take the approach of actively learning AI best practices, identifying opportunities to apply AI in meaningful ways, and driving innovative solutions in their daily work. Embracing the future of AI isn't just encouraged—it's an essential part of how we will be successful at 1Password.
This approach extends to our hiring process—candidates are welcome to use AI tools responsibly and thoughtfully during the application process. To us, this means we do ask that you join live interviews without using AI tools so we can get to know how you communicate, solve problems, and collaborate with others.
Our approach to remote work
We believe in the power of remote work, but recognize that in-person connection is important to help us achieve our mission. While we are a remote-first company, travel for in-person engagement is a part of almost all roles, and we require our employees to be ready and willing to take part. Frequency will depend on role and responsibilities, and may include, but is not limited to: annual department-wide offsites, team meetings, and customer/industry events.

Design and evolve the platform-independent composition layer, public TypeScript APIs, versioned schemas, content adapters, component model, data bindings, and platform renderer contracts.
Build reusable experience primitives and native rendering capabilities that support responsive layouts, personalization, experimentation, telemetry, accessibility, localization, and platform-specific interaction models.
Establish safe coexistence and migration patterns, including backward compatibility, capability negotiation, validation, feature flags, fallbacks, rollback, and observability.
Profile and optimize bundle size, startup and time-to-interactive performance, memory usage, rendering behavior, and runtime reliability on resource-constrained client platforms.
Improve developer experience through clear interfaces, reference integrations, test harnesses, preview and debugging tools, automated compatibility testing, and high-quality documentation.

Strong software architecture and API design skills, including modularity, dependency management, versioning, backward compatibility, and incremental migration of large production systems.
Experience building data-driven or server-driven user interfaces, reusable component systems, or runtime composition frameworks.
Demonstrated ability to diagnose and improve client performance and reliability using profiling, telemetry, automated testing, and production observability.
Experience designing for more than one client environment, such as console, mobile, web, TV, or embedded platforms, with a practical understanding of platform-specific constraints.
Proven track record of solving ambiguous, cross-functional problems with minimal direction and driving alignment without relying on formal authority.
Strong written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to document architecture and explain complex technical decisions clearly.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience with console development, living-room interfaces, focus-based navigation, or performance-constrained native clients.
Experience with schema-backed declarative UI, domain-specific languages, JSON Schema, component expansion, data binding, hydration, or client-side rendering engines.
Experience building or integrating client SDKs, content management or merchandising systems, personalization platforms, experimentation frameworks, or design systems.
Experience migrating a large client application away from a legacy rendering or content-delivery framework using staged rollout, compatibility layers, and measurable exit criteria.
Experience developing platform adapters or renderers for iOS, Android, web, or other native client environments.
Familiarity with content and layout separation, runtime content sources, telemetry provenance, accessibility, localization, and safe fallback behavior.
Experience with developer tooling, visual preview systems, contract testing, schema validation, or automated cross-platform regression testing.
Experience applying generative AI or agentic workflows to software or content creation, including evaluation, governance, and deterministic output constraints.
A track record of technical leadership and mentoring across multiple teams.
Additional Skills
Motivated self-starter who combines long-term architectural thinking with pragmatic, incremental delivery.
Customer-focused and attentive to developer experience, operational usability, and measurable product outcomes.
Comfortable working in a fast-paced, collaborative environment with partners across product, design, engineering, and operations.

As our Manager, Security Incident Response, you are at the center of how 1Password handles the moments that matter most. You will build and lead a team of builders: responders who don't just work incidents, but engineer the automation, tooling, and systems that make response faster and more scalable over time. You will guide program maturity, scale the team's capabilities through AI-assisted tooling, reinforce operational excellence, and step in as incident manager during complex, high-severity events. Success in this role blends strong people leadership with technical depth and sound judgment. As part of the Security leadership team, you will shape response strategy, build effective cross-functional partnerships, and help protect a product trusted by millions.
This role reports to the Senior Manager, Threat Operations.
• 5+ years in security incident response, with 2+ years as a people manager or technical leader supporting career development and performance management.
• Experience building or scaling incident response automation, tooling, or AI-assisted workflows (triage, enrichment, investigation), with sound judgment about where automation should and shouldn’t make decisions.
• Experience setting clear expectations, defining ownership, delegating work, and measuring outcomes.
• Experience managing high-pressure security incidents with clarity, structure, and calm.
• Strong understanding of cloud-native, SaaS, and identity-driven attack techniques and how to respond to them.
• Strong communication skills, including the ability to explain complex findings, tradeoffs, and recommendations to technical and non-technical audiences.
• Experience breaking down strategic initiatives into projects, coordinating team sprints, and managing work across competing priorities.
• Passion for fostering psychological safety and stability in stressful environments.
Who you are:
• A people-first leader who prioritizes team development, psychological safety, and performance.
• A builder at heart, someone who thinks in systems and automation, not just case queues, and hires and develops engineers with that same instinct.
• Proactive in identifying gaps, inefficiencies, or operational risks and bringing forward actionable solutions, including where AI or automation can close them.
• Effective at driving alignment across teams with differing priorities and perspectives.
• Calm and decisive during high-pressure situations, with the judgment to prioritize effectively and make difficult tradeoffs.
• A clear and transparent communicator who can align teams with differing priorities, surface tradeoffs, and advocate for sound security decisions.
• Motivated by protecting people, data, and the business.
What you can expect:

You will combine technical judgment with empathy and humility, creating the clarity, trust, and autonomy experienced engineers need to do their best work. You will help teams evaluate and adopt AI-assisted engineering practices where they improve quality, productivity, or customer outcomes, with appropriate safeguards for privacy, security, intellectual property, and reliability.
Responsibilities:
Lead, coach, recruit, and retain engineers across client, server, and full-stack teams while building leadership capacity and providing equitable growth opportunities, timely feedback, and clear performance expectations.
Set clear goals and accountability, provide context, and give teams autonomy in how they achieve outcomes.
Stay technically engaged through architecture, design, code, and operational reviews while partnering with technical leaders across client applications, APIs, distributed services, data systems, and cloud infrastructure.
Translate ambiguous product objectives into achievable technical plans that balance speed, reliability, security, maintainability, cost, and long-term architectural health.
Establish practical standards for software design, testing, observability, release management, deployment, documentation, and operational readiness.
Improve the resilience, scalability, and performance of services that operate 24/7/365, participate in alert escalation coverage from 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Pacific Time, and promote disciplined incident response and learning-focused reviews that produce durable improvements without blame.

Partner with Product, Design, Data, Security, and other leaders to deliver valuable consumer experiences and communicate priorities, tradeoffs, risks, decisions, and outcomes clearly to technical and nontechnical stakeholders.
Skills and Qualifications:
Software development experience sufficient to evaluate architecture, understand code, assess tradeoffs, and guide technical decisions across client applications, APIs, distributed systems, cloud services, and the interactions between device software and backend platforms.
Experience managing more than one engineering team, or comparable experience leading a complex organization with multiple technical workstreams.
Experience developing and releasing customer-facing software across client-side, server-side, or full-stack systems.
Experience with client release lifecycles, such as device or operating-system compatibility, staged rollouts, telemetry, backward compatibility, and coordination with service deployments.
Experience building or operating production services, including observability, scalability, performance, reliability, or incident management.
Evidence of delivering product outcomes while improving engineering quality, team capability, or organizational effectiveness through clear communication, sound tradeoffs, and effective cross-functional collaboration.
Experience coaching engineers across career stages and addressing performance expectations with clarity, consistency, and care.
Sound judgment about the opportunities, risks, and limitations of AI-assisted engineering or AI-powered products, with prior delivery of an AI product not required.
Preferred:
Experience building and releasing global consumer products with meaningful scale, availability, latency, or device-compatibility requirements.
Experience with Java, JavaScript, or TypeScript, or with comparable languages and ecosystems.
Experience with public-cloud platforms and cloud-native architectures.
Familiarity with mobile, web, streaming, messaging, event-driven, connected-device, embedded, or other real-time technologies.
Experience coordinating releases across client applications and cloud services, or leading geographically distributed or hybrid teams.
Experience introducing AI development tools, delivering AI-powered capabilities, or leading product or technical transformation.
