ABOUT US
Sierra is the leading platform for customer-facing AI agents, working with many of the world's biggest brands — including The GAP, Rocket Mortgage, SoFi, Sutter Health, and SoftBank — to transform how they serve customers and grow their businesses. We are primarily an in-person company based in San Francisco, with growing offices across North America, Europe, and Asia.
We are guided by a set of values that are at the core of our actions and define our culture: Trust, Customer Obsession, Craftsmanship, Intensity, and a commitment to balancing Family along the way. These values are the foundation of our work, and we are committed to upholding them in everything we do.
Our co-founders are Bret Taylor https://www.linkedin.com/in/brettaylor/ and Clay Bavor https://www.linkedin.com/in/claybavor/. Bret currently serves as Board Chair of OpenAI. Previously, he was co-CEO of Salesforce (which had acquired the company he founded, Quip) and CTO of Facebook. Bret was also one of Google's earliest product managers and co-creator of Google Maps. Before founding Sierra, Clay spent 18 years at Google, where he most recently led Google Labs. Earlier, he started and led Google’s AR/VR effort, Project Starline, and Google Lens. Before that, Clay led the product and design teams for Google Workspace.
WHAT YOU’LL DO
- Design and deliver production-grade AI agents https://sierra.ai/blog/meet-the-ai-agent-engineer: You'll build and ship highly performant, reliable, and intuitive AI agents that are central, mission-critical and drive revenue directly to Sierra's growth. These aren't prototypes—they are powerful, scalable systems running in production environments across industries like finance, healthcare, and commerce.
- Drive the Agent Development Life Cycle https://sierra.ai/blog/agent-development-life-cycle (ADLC): You'll have complete ownership and autonomy from initial pilot through deployment and continuous iteration. You'll be responsible for building, tuning, and evolving AI agents in production environments, defining the standard for ADLC best practices along the way.
- Partner with large enterprises and cutting-edge startups: You’ll work directly with leaders at some of the world’s largest enterprises to understand their most pressing business challenges, and build AI agents that transform how they operate at scale. You'll also partner with the most cutting-edge startups in London, embedding AI agents across their entire business stack to drive innovation and efficiency.
- Build the future of the platform: Your direct work with customers will guide the evolution of Sierra's core platform. You'll surface unmet needs, prototype new tools and features, and collaborate with research, product, and platform to shape the future of AI agent development and Sierra's product.

WHAT YOU'LL DO
As an Agent Strategist https://sierra.ai/blog/agent-strategist-your-phd-in-applied-ai, you own how Sierra's AI agents come to life for our customers — from first pilot to a production agent handling thousands of conversations a day. You sit at the intersection of product, building agents and customer-facing work, and stay just as close to the technology as you are to the people you build for. You transform a customer's thorniest, highest-stakes problems into agents that measurably move their business.
- Own the Agent Development Life Cycle https://sierra.ai/blog/agent-development-life-cycle. Take agents from initial scope through conversation design, tooling, and evaluation, to launch and continuous iteration in production — translating business goals into an agent that outperforms, and tuning relentlessly until it's the best version of itself in the real world. You'll have real ownership and autonomy over the outcome.
- Be the trusted strategic advisor to enterprise leaders. Sit shoulder-to-shoulder with our customers' executives, understand what success actually means to their business, and shape the AI strategy that gets them there.
- Partner with the customer's working teams day to day. Run working sessions, troubleshoot the agent as issues come up, and make the calls that keep the build on track for launch.
- Directly impact product. Surface unmet needs from your customer work, and feed them back to research and platform to shape where Sierra goes next.
EXAMPLE PROJECTS
These are the kinds of projects that strategists on our team have worked on recently:
- Scope and launch a subscription-retention agent for a large telecommunications or media company that consistently outperforms human agents at saving at-risk customers.
- Stand up an agent for a commerce customer that troubleshoots a broken device end-to-end and personalizes product recommendations in the same conversation.
- Redesign the conversation flows for a financial services agent so it can handle complex, regulated interactions — and convert a pilot into a multi-team production deployment. See our financial services blog https://sierra.ai/blog/five-ways-to-use-ai-agents-financial-services for examples.
- Partner with product on a net-new capability — a new agent architecture or self-service tooling — using a live customer as the design partner.
- Define the evaluation and quality bar for a new agent, then use those metrics to drive a measurable lift in outcome https://sierra.ai/blog/outcome-based-pricing-for-ai-agents week over week.
WHAT YOU'LL BRING
- Customer obsession. Genuine energy being in front of customers — understanding their business and needs, thriving in complex organizations, and building trusted relationships.
- Communication. Clear, direct, and persuasive across technical and non-technical audiences.
- Strategic problem-solving in ambiguity. Strong analytical and critical-thinking skills to break down complex problems, spot risks early, and adapt as things change fast.
- Technical aptitude. Comfortable engaging directly with technical concepts - reading API documentation, understanding data models and system architecture, and following engineering tradeoffs in a design discussion.
- Ownership and delivery. A track record of running multiple complex, high-visibility projects at once and driving them to outcomes.
EVEN BETTER...
- Experience building or deploying AI/LLM agents in production — hands-on with the tools behind them (eval frameworks, agent tooling, RAG, prompt engineering) — working closely with technical counterparts.
- You've been a founder, founding team member, or operator — you know how to balance craft, ownership, and speed.
- A degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Mathematics, a related technical field, or equivalent practical experience — and/or an MBA or comparable experience at the intersection of technology and business.
OUR VALUES
- Trust: We build trust with our customers with our accountability, empathy, quality, and responsiveness. We build trust in AI by making it more accessible, safe, and useful. We build trust with each other by showing up for each other professionally and personally, creating an environment that enables all of us to do our best work.
- Customer Obsession: We deeply understand our customers’ business goals and relentlessly focus on driving outcomes, not just technical milestones. Everyone at the company knows and spends time with our customers. When our customer is having an issue, we drop everything and fix it.

We’re looking for a Staff Backend Engineer with extensive experience in distributed systems, large-scale backend architecture, and high-volume storage systems. You will own systems end-to-end—from schema design and API architecture to deployment, observability, and operational excellence.
The work is highly dynamic, and you will operate in a fast-paced environment where we continuously evolve the platform to support enormous growth in traffic, data, and global usage. You’ll collaborate across engineering, SRE, Product, and Design while acting as a technical leader who simplifies complexity, elevates engineering quality, and improves a globally critical developer platform.
If you’re passionate about building and operating massive-scale distributed systems with huge data and throughput demands, this role is for you.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Distributed Systems & Backend Engineering
- Architect, build, and operate high-scale distributed systems powering Docker Hub’s registry platform—spanning artifact storage, metadata services, indexing workflows, and performance-critical APIs.
- Lead the design and implementation of backend services with a strong emphasis on scalability, correctness, resilience, and performance.
- Drive major initiatives around multi-region replication, caching strategies, request-path optimization, and core registry reliability.
Data Infrastructure & Storage
- Design, optimize, operate the data and storage layers - for both Relational and NoSql as well as object storage and related technologies.
- Develop schemas and data models to support high-throughput, large-volume workloads.
- Own systems end-to-end—from storage-layer behavior to API design, deployment workflows, and production monitoring.
Operations, Observability & Scale
- Improve the performance and reliability of one of the world’s largest repositories of container images.
- Develop and enhance observability through metrics, traces, alerting, and dashboards.
- Lead improvements to deployment and operational tooling (e.g., Argo CD, GitHub Actions).
- Participate in on-call rotations as part of supporting critical production services.
Leadership & Collaboration
- Mentor engineers and lead design and architecture reviews.
- Partner with Product, Design, SRE, and Platform teams to deliver high-impact projects.
- Engage with open-source communities, cloud-native partners, and the broader ecosystem.
- This role may require participation in an on-call rotation to provide support outside of standard business hours, including evenings, weekends, and holidays, as needed.
QUALIFICATIONS
Required
- 8+ years backend engineering experience with deep expertise in distributed systems and large-scale backend architectures.
- Strong production experience with Golang, including designing and operating large Go-based services in cloud environments.
- Strong production experience with Kubernetes, including operating services at scale.
- Experience designing and running high-scale storage systems (PostgreSQL, DynamoDB, or equivalent) in production.
- Experience building and operating cloud-based services (AWS preferred).
- Experience with event-driven or streaming systems, such as Kafka, SNS/SQS, or equivalent.
- Strong foundation in software engineering best practices: design documentation, testing strategies, CI/CD, code review, observability.
- Comfortable functioning autonomously in a fully distributed, remote-first team and working effectively in a fast-paced environment.
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience
Nice to Have
- Experience with OCI registries, artifact stores, or large-scale content distribution systems.
- Familiarity with search/indexing systems or metadata-rich architectures.
- Contributions to cloud-native or open-source ecosystems.
WHAT WE’RE LOOKING FOR
- An engineer with deep experience in distributed systems and large-scale storage
- Someone who thrives in a fast-paced environment and consistently optimizes for reliability, automation, and performance.
- A technical leader who takes ownership of complex systems and drives long-term architectural direction.
- An engineer energised by the challenges of operating a global developer platform at massive scale.

HEALTH CAN’T WAIT.
Not for symptoms to get worse. Not for a six‑month appointment. Not for a system to catch up. But that’s exactly how healthcare works today. You wait, until you can’t.
Alan exists to end the wait.
Health is a universal right, and we believe this right can only become real when it’s coupled with prevention. We need to stop treating health as something we repair and start treating it as something we build, every day. It’s not solely a question of willpower. It’s the healthcare system itself that needs to work for everyone, in a sustainable way.
So we are building the new standard in prevention insurance. Alan is the first company that integrates insurance, prevention, and care into a single, acclaimed user experience.
We are on an incredible journey to build a global leading company, with a unique culture https://alan.com/en/careers. We already partner with 40K+ companies of all sizes, serving more than 1M+ members, and have reached €800M+ in ARR.
Prevention as the new norm. That's what we're building with our team of 1000+ people. If it speaks to you: we're hiring across France, Spain, Belgium, and Canada. And beyond.
⭐ CEO Founder Associate Internship ⭐
The position is open for gap year or end-of-study interns starting from July 2027, for a six-month internship. It is not open to MBA students.
CEO Founder Associates support the CEO and Senior Alaners on top business priorities, such as unlocking new growth, driving alignment on strategy, building new processes internally and externally and building new products. This role offers a unique opportunity to work on a diverse range of strategic projects in a dynamic, innovative environment, gaining invaluable experience across multiple facets of the business.
You will be highly involved in key challenges for Alan, and will be asked to support high added value tasks for Alan.
⭐ DETAILED MISSIONS ⭐
As such, you can’t be exhaustive on the missions you will perform as a FA, as you can be asked to help on almost any subject.
POSSIBLE PROJECTS INCLUDE:
- Strategy - Contribute to the strategic vision of the company, market analysis and competition, identify strategic business opportunities, perform business analyses and growth modelling
- Product & Design - Contribute to the product vision by identifying and exploring strategic product opportunities, support the continuous improvement of Alan’s core offering, conduct user research, assist in design & prototyping

- Brand & Communication - Develop the corporate presence at major events, via social networks; organise internal and external events to build the Alan network and leverage connections globally.
- Talent - Sourcing and recruiting the next batch of FA’s
In this position, you will get a great overview of the key strategic topics at Alan and you will have the chance to work with senior Alaners on topics that are instrumental to our success. You will grow exponentially with the guidance of senior Alaners. It is a unique chance to work on so many tasks in a different and non traditional environment.
Examples of recent projects:
- Strategy - Develop market entry strategies for international expansion, contribute RFP coordination for major prospects in the public sector, create go-to-market plans for new segments.

- Recurring tasks - Coordinating the weekly internal communication, supporting the CEO with meeting preparations, organising the internal events, recruiting the next batch of FAs- And many more...
⭐ PROFILE & COMPETENCIES ⭐
SKILLS
- Analytical sense and critical thinking: FAs have a lot of research and analysis to produce. This requires the ability to frame the right questions, objectively analyse and evaluate a problem, and problem-solve including simulating possible outcomes.
- Business’ and product sense: FAs often have to think at the company level, assessing what would be best for the business, and working on topics that have cross-cutting impacts. The ability to understand what can make a business great (product wise, commercially, in terms of image, etc.), and make correct decisions, even in the presence of ambiguity, is paramount.
- Execution and collaboration: given the scope, volume and timeline of work, the ability to direct people—including oneself—towards a particular objective that may require active orchestration is key.
- Versatility: given the scope of work, FAs should be able to jump from one topic to another with similar impact
- Organization, time management and autonomy: you are well-versed in missions requiring precision and reliability. You are able to manage a project from start to finish with minimal external assistance.
- Communicate effectively: given the number of Alaners that FAs interact with on a daily basis, the ability to communicate your specific needs (deadlines etc) and to inspire action in others is essential.
- Always looking for the extra-mile: as a FA, you will be expected to be able to deliver quickly and well on the tasks assigned to you, but also to be proactive in proposing new initiatives, going beyond the task assigned to you if you think it is necessary, as well as anticipating future needs to propose potential solutions?
- Growth mindset: you know how to ask for and receive feedback in order to grow as an FA in your early professional life.
- Fluency in spoken and written English. All our communications are written and in English.
- Technical aptitude: Familiarity and appetite for basic programming, experience with data analysis and/or product creation tools is a plus.
We welcome applications from candidates with diverse educational backgrounds, including but not limited to:
- Business schools (HEC, ESSEC, ESCP, LSE …)
- Engineering schools (Polytechnique, Mines Paris, Ecole des Ponts, CentraleSupelec, Imperial … )
- Data science or mathematics programs
- Other relevant fields or schools (Bocconi, Politecnico, TU Delft, UCL, Oxford, Cambridge)
Diplomas matter to an extent but if you don’t have one and have built a project or a company, we’d love to hear from you so please send your application!
