An overview of this role
As a Senior or Staff Backend Engineer with the
Database Excellence group
, you'll build and evolve database automation and PostgreSQL as a service capabilities for GitLab. The level will be determined during the hiring process. You'll use Go to automate the full lifecycle of PostgreSQL across GitLab's infrastructure, making database operations safer, more consistent, and easier to scale for databases that sit behind high-throughput, always-on internet services. You'll work closely with partner teams to shape how GitLab provisions and manages PostgreSQL in a fully remote, highly collaborative environment.
Some examples of our projects:
SQL Traffic Replay Tooling
, which validates upgrades and changes against real production workloads.
PostgreSQL as a Service Platform
, which provides standardized, automated provisioning and lifecycle management for internal product databases.
PostgreSQL Major Version Upgrade Automation
, which supports safe, repeatable major upgrades at GitLab.com scale.
What you’ll do
Design, build, and maintain Go-based automation that manages the full PostgreSQL lifecycle, including provisioning, configuration, upgrades, failover, scaling, and decommissioning, reducing reactive operational work that currently takes more than 80% of the team's time.
Build automation that works across infrastructure-as-code tooling and cloud infrastructure, and evaluate operator-based approaches as the platform evolves.
Use AI agents as a regular part of building and operating services, including implementation, review, and reducing repetitive work, while keeping the context agents need in the repository so the whole team can build on it.
Build for internet scale by designing automation and services for high-throughput, always-on production workloads, where GitLab.com traffic sets the bar for correctness, latency, and availability.
Integrate compute, storage, networking, identity and access management, and managed data services across cloud providers into one coherent PostgreSQL platform instead of creating bespoke setups for each database.
Build GitLab's PostgreSQL as a service platform to replace bespoke database setups with standardized, automated provisioning and lifecycle management, so supporting more databases doesn't require growing the operations team at the same rate.
Collaborate closely with product management, infrastructure, software delivery, and other engineering teams to design and ship high-performing solutions.
Research, design, and implement improvements to PostgreSQL performance, scalability, and data health, helping maintain more than 8 months of operational runway for all critical database saturation points.
Review database automation and Go changes from other engineers and contributors, with attention to safety, maintainability, and performance.
Document automation practices, PostgreSQL operational patterns, and guidance that helps engineers use and contribute to the platform.
Build safe, repeatable automation for PostgreSQL major version upgrades at GitLab.com scale, validating changes against real production traffic before rollout.
Operate what you build in production from end to end, using production feedback to guide each iteration.
What you’ll bring
Professional software engineering experience working with PostgreSQL in large, complex production environments, including experience building or operating a database-as-a-service product.
Proficiency with Go, including designing, implementing, testing, and reviewing backend services.
Experience developing Kubernetes operators, controllers, or similar automation for the lifecycle of stateful services, especially databases. Kubernetes experience is one way to demonstrate this skill, but isn't required; comparable experience building database or infrastructure automation is welcome.
Comfort with infrastructure as code and core database operations concepts such as high availability, replication, backups, and system-level performance trade-offs.
Familiarity with Ruby is a plus but isn't required. Much of GitLab's application codebase uses Ruby on Rails, and being able to read it helps when designing automation that application teams depend on. We’ll expect you to become comfortable with it on the job, not on day one.
Strong written communication skills and comfort working asynchronously in an all-remote, distributed team.
Self-directed work style with effective organizational skills, the ability to manage priorities as a "manager of one," and alignment with GitLab's values of transparency, collaboration, inclusion, and open source contribution, as well as its
operating principles
.
Ownership of the technical direction for a major initiative such as the PostgreSQL as a service platform, turning an ambiguous problem into an architecture and a sequenced plan that several engineers can execute in parallel.
Influence beyond the team, setting the patterns other engineers follow, partnering with sibling database, infrastructure, and platform teams, and growing engineers through design reviews and mentorship.
About the team
The
Database Excellence group

We maintain operational runway by identifying and addressing saturation points, operate infrastructure through automated and scalable processes, and provide tools and frameworks that help teams build features sustainably. Our primary focus is GitLab.com, and we're expanding our scope to provide database health frameworks and tooling that benefit self-managed customers as well.

ABOUT MORPHO
Morpho is a leading Decentralized Finance (DeFi) lending protocol backed by a16z crypto, Paradigm, Ribbit Capital, Apollo, Vaneck, Coinbase Ventures, Variant and 50 others to build an open credit network giving anyone, anywhere, access to the best possible terms. Morpho is experiencing exponential adoption, with over billion in deposits on the network and used by institutional clients including Bitwise, Galaxy, and Anchorage Digital and the largest crypto exchanges, such as Coinbase, Binance, and Kraken. Now, Morpho is scaling its team of contributors to establish itself as the open credit network, not just of DeFi, but of the world.
WHY MORPHO EXISTS
Everyone has the potential to build something great for the world. But fulfilling that ambition almost always requires more: people willing to trust you with their capital. Yet access to capital still depends on where you live, who you know, and which institutions are willing to trust you. Even when capital is available, it sits fragmented across disconnected networks and hidden behind intermediaries. The result is a system that fails most of the people it should serve. Borrowers overpay. Lenders earn less than they should. Many are shut out entirely, not because they are unworthy of credit, but because today's infrastructure was never built to connect them. Morpho exists to solve this. Full article here https://morpho.org/blog/why-morpho-exists/.
LOCATION
This role is Hybrid - New York.
ROLE
Morpho's largest enterprise partners are live integrations with significant untapped growth potential. This role embeds inside a flagship partner organization, builds relationships from PMs to executives, and inserts Morpho into the partner's product roadmap. Success is measured on revenue and active loans generated by the account.
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Own relationship management for a flagship enterprise partner, building relationships with PMs, executives, and teams across the organization to grow the account and protect it from churn
- Run a recurring meeting cadence with the partner's product teams, including quarterly reviews with executives, to align objectives and keep joint priorities moving
- Make the commercial and product case to PMs that integrating loans grows their revenue, improves their product, and benefits their users, so Morpho earns a place on their roadmap
- Track product data to identify growth levers, such as rolling products out to new jurisdictions or running activation campaigns, and turn them into quantified expansion plays
- Map the incentives of the different players inside the partner organization and use that understanding to unlock decisions
- Spend consistent in-person time with the partner's teams in New York so relationships run deep across the organization, not through a single contact
WHAT SUCCESS LOOKS LIKE
FIRST 30 DAYS
Fully onboarded on a flagship account: you understand the current integration, its performance data, and the history of the relationship, and you have mapped the organization, its decision makers, and their incentives. You have met the key PMs in person and established yourself as Morpho's primary point of contact.
FIRST 3 MONTHS
You have drafted a full account strategy with the CEO: growth thesis, expansion opportunities across existing and new products, blockers, and a 12-month roadmap. A recurring cadence is running with the partner's product teams, and you have identified 2-3 quantified expansion plays and begun pitching them to the relevant PMs.
FIRST 6 MONTHS
Morpho features on the partner's product roadmap, with at least one expansion play committed or shipped and measurable growth in revenue and active loans against your starting baseline. Executive relationships are established, quarterly reviews run as standard cadence, and you are trusted internally as the voice of the account.
MUST HAVE SKILLS & EXPERIENCE
- Experience navigating and selling into large organizations, for example through a top-tier consulting background or an enterprise-facing operating role
- Strong relationship builder across levels, from PMs to executives
- Product-minded: able to insert yourself into a roadmap and argue the commercial and product case for integrating loans
- Data-driven: comfortable tracking product metrics and spotting expansion opportunities like new jurisdictions or activation campaigns
- Crypto native: credible in front of PMs at major crypto and fintech platforms
- Comfort operating in fast-changing, ambiguous contexts
- Strong ownership and autonomy: doesn't wait to be told
- Clear and crisp async communication
- Team-first mindset, low ego
PERKS & BENEFITS
We design benefits around deep work and growth, so you can do the best work of your career. Expect fair, top-tier compensation, real flexibility, time together in Paris, great health coverage, and support to keep learning.
EQUAL OPPORTUNITY

ABOUT US
Sierra is the leading platform for customer-facing AI agents, working with many of the world's biggest brands — including The GAP, Rocket Mortgage, SoFi, Sutter Health, and SoftBank — to transform how they serve customers and grow their businesses. We are primarily an in-person company based in San Francisco, with growing offices across North America, Europe, and Asia.
We are guided by a set of values that are at the core of our actions and define our culture: Trust, Customer Obsession, Craftsmanship, Intensity, and a commitment to balancing Family along the way. These values are the foundation of our work, and we are committed to upholding them in everything we do.
Our co-founders are Bret Taylor https://www.linkedin.com/in/brettaylor/ and Clay Bavor https://www.linkedin.com/in/claybavor/. Bret currently serves as Board Chair of OpenAI. Previously, he was co-CEO of Salesforce (which had acquired the company he founded, Quip) and CTO of Facebook. Bret was also one of Google's earliest product managers and co-creator of Google Maps. Before founding Sierra, Clay spent 18 years at Google, where he most recently led Google Labs. Earlier, he started and led Google’s AR/VR effort, Project Starline, and Google Lens. Before that, Clay led the product and design teams for Google Workspace.
WHAT YOU'LL DO:
- Drive partner activation through onboarding, enablement, certification, governance, and operational support programs that help product, strategic, and channel partners become productive quickly.
- Build and continuously improve the systems, playbooks, processes, and partner-facing resources that enable Sierra’s partnership ecosystem to scale, including onboarding guides, enablement content, FAQs, and operational documentation.
- Coordinate cross-functional execution across Product, Engineering, Sales, Solutions Engineering, Customer Success, Marketing, Legal, GTM Operations, and Partnerships to support product launches, technology integrations, joint GTM programs, co-sell motions, and strategic initiatives.
- Plan and execute ongoing partner engagement and governance, including enablement sessions, webinars, QBRs, executive business reviews, newsletters, office hours, partner events, and ongoing partnership management.
- Build reporting and use data to improve partnership health, tracking partner activation, engagement, pipeline contribution, partner-influenced revenue, and overall performance while identifying friction and continuously improving how Sierra launches, activates, and scales partnerships.
WHAT YOU'LL BRING:
- 6+ years of experience in partnership management, partner programs, partner success, ecosystem operations, program management, or a related function within an enterprise SaaS company.
- Experience launching, activating, and scaling strategic partnerships, including partner onboarding, enablement, certification, joint GTM execution, technology launches, and ongoing partner success.
- Strong cross-functional operator with experience influencing Product, Engineering, GTM, Customer Success, Marketing, Legal, and external partners without direct authority, and exceptional organizational, communication, analytical, and project management skills.
- Comfortable with APIs, integrations, and technical product concepts, with the ability to collaborate closely with technical teams without needing to be an engineer.
- Fluent with modern AI tools and workflows, actively using AI to improve your work and understanding how AI is changing enterprise software, customer engagement, and partnership models; thrives in ambiguity and enjoys turning strategy into repeatable execution.
EVEN BETTER...
- Experience supporting and scaling strategic partnership programs across product and technology partnerships, cloud ecosystems, systems integrators, strategic alliances, or channel networks, ideally in a high-growth global environment.
- Experience working across enterprise software ecosystems and partners such as AWS, Google Cloud, Microsoft, Salesforce, ServiceNow, Stripe, Twilio, Snowflake, Databricks, or large global systems integrators, with familiarity across PRM, CRM, partner enablement, learning management, and collaboration platforms.
- Technical and AI ecosystem experience, including AI platforms, developer tools, or enterprise software, with prior software development, solutions engineering, or technical implementation experience a plus.
OUR VALUES
- Trust: We build trust with our customers with our accountability, empathy, quality, and responsiveness. We build trust in AI by making it more accessible, safe, and useful. We build trust with each other by showing up for each other professionally and personally, creating an environment that enables all of us to do our best work.
- Customer Obsession: We deeply understand our customers’ business goals and relentlessly focus on driving outcomes, not just technical milestones. Everyone at the company knows and spends time with our customers. When our customer is having an issue, we drop everything and fix it.
- Craftsmanship: We get the details right, from the words on the page to the system architecture. We have good taste. When we notice something isn’t right, we take the time to fix it. We are proud of the products we produce. We continuously self-reflect to continuously self-improve.
- Intensity: We know we don’t have the luxury of patience. We play to win. We care about our product being the best, and when it isn’t, we fix it. When we fail, we talk about it openly and without blame so we succeed the next time.
- Family: We know that balance and intensity are compatible, and we model it in our actions and processes. We are the best technology company for parents. We support and respect each other and celebrate each other’s personal and professional achievements.

ABOUT THE TEAM
The Release Team owns the safe, continuous delivery of ClickHouse Cloud, a managed database platform running tens of thousands of ClickHouse clusters. We are responsible for upgrading and maintaining those clusters at scale, building the internal tooling that makes it possible, and being the last line of defense when something doesn't go according to plan.
ABOUT THE ROLE
This role is an equal split between operational execution and software development. You are responsible for the operational side: coordinating and running upgrades, dealing with edge cases that don't fit the happy path, and keeping tens of thousands of clusters healthy in production. At the same time, you are building and constantly improving the systems that make the next rollout safer and more automated than the last. If you find satisfaction in both writing the playbook and executing it, including the messy parts, this role is for you.
WHAT YOU'LL DO
- Plan and execute rolling upgrades across tens of thousands of ClickHouse clusters, ensuring safety, correctness, and minimal customer impact
- Own the full release pipeline: from pre-upgrade validation and staged rollouts to post-upgrade monitoring and incident response
- Investigate and resolve production issues as part of a regular on-call rotation, including snowflake clusters and edge cases that automation can't yet handle
- Build and improve the internal tooling and automation that makes large-scale database operations reliable and repeatable
- Work closely with the core database and cloud infrastructure teams to identify operational pain points and turn them into solved problems
- Support and educate other engineering teams using our internal tools
ABOUT YOU
- 5+ years of experience operating stateful distributed systems in production, such as databases, message queues, or storage systems
- Hands-on experience running upgrades or maintenance operations on live production data stores, at scale
- Strong production debugging skills; you are comfortable digging into unfamiliar systems under pressure
- Experience with cloud infrastructure (AWS, Azure, or GCP) and Kubernetes
- Software development experience in Go (or strong experience in another language and genuine willingness to learn)
- Experience with ClickHouse preferred (as a user, operator or contributor)

An overview of this role
As a Senior Backend Engineer with the
Database Excellence group
, you'll build and evolve the data frameworks and tooling that keep GitLab's application datastores scalable, healthy, and safe across both GitLab.com and thousands of self-managed instances. A primary focus for this role is building proactive data growth controls for GitLab.com, including retention and lifecycle management frameworks, enforcement of retention policies at schema-change time, and tooling that keeps database growth sustainable as AI-driven development accelerates how quickly data accumulates. You'll help teams across GitLab reason confidently about data architecture, placement, and lifecycle management, while proactively identifying saturation points in our GitLab.com infrastructure and driving corrective actions with partner teams. With the team's recent move into the Data Engineering organization, you'll also shape new scalability and data health features for self-managed customers, working hands-on with PostgreSQL and Ruby on Rails in a fully remote, highly collaborative environment.
Some examples of our projects:
Data Growth Controls (retention enforcement and data lifecycle management)
SQL Traffic Replay Tooling
Background Operations Framework
What you'll do
Develop and iterate backend features and data frameworks that make it safe and efficient for GitLab teams to work with data at scale across SaaS and self-managed deployments.
Design and build data retention and lifecycle management frameworks, including retention policy enforcement, bulk data removal tooling, and automated identification of tables that need retention policies.
Build shift-left guardrails, such as static analysis checks and schema-change-time enforcement, that catch unsustainable data growth patterns before they reach production.
Collaborate closely with product management, UX, frontend, infrastructure, software delivery, and analytics teams to design and ship high-performing solutions
Review and improve database-related changes from other engineers and community contributors, ensuring data integrity, safety, and performance across all deployment scenarios.
Design, build, and maintain tooling such as SQL traffic replay and background operations frameworks to proactively surface and address scalability and performance issues.
Research, design, and implement improvements to data retention and lifecycle management, database performance, scalability, and data health, including areas like soft delete strategies and database migration testing.
Document database best practices, patterns to avoid, and data architecture guidance to enable developers to make informed decisions.
Develop proactive tooling and guardrails that help developers detect and remediate potential performance and data issues early in the development lifecycle.
What you'll bring
Professional software engineering experience working with PostgreSQL in large, complex production environments, including high availability solutions with automatic failover and zero-downtime data migrations as well as managing large or fast-growing datasets through approaches such as data retention, archiving, partitioning, or lifecycle management.
Proficiency with Ruby on Rails or another Ruby framework, including designing, implementing, and reviewing backend features.
Ability to reason about software design, algorithms, and performance trade-offs at a system level.
Strong written communication skills and comfort working asynchronously in an all-remote, distributed team.
Self-directed work style with effective organizational skills and the ability to manage priorities as a "manager of one".
Alignment with GitLab's values, including transparency, collaboration, inclusion, and contribution to open source.
Openness to learning and applying new tools and approaches, including transferable experience from related data, infrastructure, or developer tooling domains.
Willingness to participate in our
tier 2 dabase on-call rotation
in your time zone.
The
Database Excellence Group
is a remote, agile backend team that builds and maintains the frameworks, patterns, and tooling that enable GitLab teams to work confidently with data at scale across all application datastores. As part of the broader Data Engineering organization, we focus on data scalability, health, and developer enablement for both GitLab.com and thousands of self-managed deployments, collaborating closely with infrastructure, software delivery, and analytics stages to ensure data changes are safe, performant, and compatible across diverse environments. We are independent, self-organized contributors, and we collaborate asynchronously across regions. We are currently expanding our mission from proactively identifying and addressing saturation points in GitLab.com infrastructure to also delivering scalability features and data health initiatives to self-managed customers.

ABOUT RAMP
Ramp is building the smart infrastructure for finance teams, embedded in the transaction flow of every dollar a business spends. We automate how over $275B in annualized spend flows in and out of 85,000+ companies: authorizing payments, flagging risk, categorizing spend, and closing books.
The problems are high-stakes, data-dense, and unforgiving.
We hire people with high agency and high urgency. We look for slope over intercept. We care less about where you trained and more about what you’ve built. At Ramp, everyone is a builder who owns problems end to end and makes consequential decisions that shape the outcome.
The median Ramp customer saves 7.5% and grows revenue 16% in their first year – far in excess of businesses operating without Ramp. We believe every ambitious company deserves the same.
If you want to build systems that directly shape how companies move and manage billions, Ramp is the place to do it.
ABOUT THE ROLE
Ramp builds software that moves real money, from bill payments and corporate cards to reimbursements, accounting integrations, and travel. Our customers rely on us to keep their operations running: invoices get paid, books get closed, and finance leaders can trust the data behind every decision.
In this role, you will be the person who spots where customers are getting stuck and drives issues to a clear resolution. You will learn a complex product deeply enough to troubleshoot across payments, bank linking, accounting syncs, and card programs, then partner with teams across Engineering, Risk, Product, and Partnerships to get problems solved. This is not script-based support. You will triage, investigate, and make high-signal judgment calls throughout the day.
You will thrive in this role if you are a systems thinker and deeply customer obsessed. Support is the baseline. How you think about improving processes, tools, and outcomes is what sets you apart.
WHAT YOU’LL DO
- Be the voice of Ramp's Customer Support. You'll spend your day engaging with customers, primarily via live calls, email, and chat.
- Diagnose across a broad product surface. Ramp isn't one product — it's payments, cards, travel, accounting integrations, and more. You'll need to understand how they connect and where they break.
- Operate with an ownership mindset, managing escalations end-to-end. You take full accountability for every ticket you handle. When an issue crosses team boundaries — risk, engineering, product, partnerships — you route it correctly, follow up, and make sure the customer isn't left waiting. You'll work across Zendesk, internal tooling, and Slack-based escalation workflows.
- Build and shape AI tools, not just use them. Ramp is building AI into CX operations. You'll use AI-powered research tools and proprietary tools like Glass daily, provide direct feedback on what's working, and play an active role in how these tools evolve. You're not just a user — you're a builder. We are all builders at Ramp.
- Ship improvements, not just flag them. When you notice a process gap, a missing SOP, or a knowledge base article that's sending associates down the wrong path, you don't just raise it — you have the autonomy to roll up your sleeves and fix it. Leverage AI to solve problems, build automations, and improve the systems around you. The best people in this role make the whole team better.
- Communicate with precision and empathy. Our customers are financially sophisticated. You need to explain what's happening, what you're doing about it, and what they should expect — clearly and without filler.
WHAT YOU NEED
- You're a systems thinker: you don't just solve the ticket in front of you, you ask why the problem exists and how to prevent it from happening again.
- You actively use AI tools — Claude, Notion AI, research and workflow tools — and can demonstrate how you've applied them to get real work done. This is a hard requirement.
- You're fast-moving while holding yourself to a high bar for execution: you balance speed, accuracy, and thoroughness in every interaction.
- You can hold a technical conversation about how systems connect (APIs, bank integrations, accounting software) even if you're not writing code.
- You manage competing priorities without dropping things. When you have 15 open issues across 4 internal teams, nothing falls through.
- You write clearly and concisely. You can explain a payment reconciliation issue to a CFO without jargon.
- You're comfortable on the phone. Many interactions start there.
- You have a demonstrated track record of exceeding key performance standards, including CSAT, QA, and speed-of-service metrics.
NICE TO HAVES
- Experience building workflows or automations using AI tools, not just prompting
- Familiarity with accounting workflows (AP/AR, GL, reconciliation) or ERP integrations (NetSuite, QuickBooks, Sage)
- Background in payments infrastructure (ACH, wire transfers, card networks)
- Track record of working somewhere that shipped product fast and expected CX to keep up
WHY BE A CX ASSOCIATE AT RAMP
- Cross-functional exposure from day one. You work directly with Product, Engineering, and GTM teams — not siloed into a support queue.
- AI tools and unlimited access. Unlimited tokens, proprietary AI tools like Glass, and a culture that expects you to use them to move faster and build smarter.
- Career growth that you own. Grow within CX, explore other functions internally, or carve out a path that doesn't exist yet. If you're invested, we're invested.
- Culture that's different from a call center. Team events, in-person offsites, and a genuine commitment to building a team people want to be part of.
