How we're different We believe that the highest-impact AI research will be big science. At Anthropic we work as a single cohesive team on just a few large-scale research efforts. We're an extremely collaborative group, and we host frequent research discussions to ensure that we are pursuing the highest-impact work at any given time. As such, we greatly value communication skills. The easiest way to understand our research directions is to read our recent research. This research continues many of the directions our team worked on prior to Anthropic, including: GPT-3, Circuit-Based Interpretability, Multimodal Neurons, Scaling Laws, AI & Compute, Concrete Problems in AI Safety, and Learning from Human Preferences. The Institute is comprised of research teams tackling some of AI's most consequential societal challenges: the Frontier Red Team, which stress tests our systems against catastrophic risks; Societal Impacts, which studies how Claude is used by millions of people; Economic Research, which tracks AI's impact on people's jobs and the larger economy; the Rule of Law team, which studies AI's impacts to democracy; and more. The Institute's mission is to reduce information asymmetries between Anthropic and the outside world, name and answer the hard questions implied by powerful AI systems, and publish these findings so that policymakers, researchers, technology leaders, and the public can reckon with what's here and what's to come. About the role The role. You will build and lead the Institute’s tabletop exercise program and the team that runs it. Based on trends visible in the exponential and in consultation with technical experts, you will set the research agenda: which questions the exercises should answer, which scenarios to run, with which audiences, and what each run is meant to test. You will own the methods that make results comparable across runs and turn them into findings people outside the room can use. You will hire and manage a team plus a bench of facilitators, and you will be the program’s public voice. Why tabletop exercises? If RSI arrives, the hardest problems will be about making decisions under uncertainty. The people making them may not trust each other, and the authorities they work under may not be fit-for-purpose. A tabletop exercise (TTX) allows the people who would face that situation practice it before it is real. It also shows us what tools and information they reach for, including what they would need that does not exist yet. Tabletop exercises are also a research method. You can run the same scenario many times, with different groups of people (and with many more AI agents playing in silico), and you start to see the distribution of decisions people make. This is one of the few ways to generate empirical evidence about the future, i.e., how people and institutions will respond to situations that have not happened yet. Key responsibilities Set the program’s research agenda: the questions exercises should answer, the scenarios to run, and the audience for each Design exercises as empirical studies: define what each run tests, standardize scenarios and data capture so results are comparable, and use repeated play to map the range of outcomes Build the program’s measurement: pre- and post-exercise assessments, decision logs, transcript analysis and after-action reports Turn results into findings: publish on what the exercises show, and brief senior people inside and outside Anthropic on the gaps they expose Hire, manage and develop a team and a bench of facilitators Make the program scalable: maintain a library of tested scenarios that the team reuses most of the time, refreshed on a regular cadence so they stay timely Build a facilitator kit ("TTX in a box") so other internal teams or external partners can run exercises to the same standard Create and direct the tools behind the exercises, including Claude-driven simulations that generate a live outside-world feed during play Minimum qualifications Have designed and run tabletop exercises, wargames, or simulations for senior decision-makers and published on the subject Have training in a discipline that uses simulation, experimental methods or structured analysis Have 10+ years of experience in national security, government, technology policy, or strategy Can keep the scenarios technically grounded with a strong grasp of AI capabilities and safety research Have managed a team, including hiring, setting direction, giving feedback and developing people Use Claude and other AI tools extensively in your own work Care about AI safety and Anthropic's public benefit mission Preferred qualifications Published research on wargaming methods, simulation or crisis decision-making Run exercises that fed into real policy or crisis-response decisions Run multi-iteration or experimental wargames and analyzed results across runs Used AI agents or language models as players, adjudicators or analysts in simulations Led a research program or team through a period of growth Existing relationships across national security, government, policy and AI, and are trusted in those communities Published widely read work on AI, emerging technology, strategy or crisis decision-making We encourage you to apply even if you do not believe you meet every single qualification. Not all strong candidates will meet every single qualification as listed. Research shows that people who identify as being from underrepresented groups are more prone to experiencing imposter syndrome and doubting the strength of their candidacy, so we urge you not to exclude yourself prematurely and to submit an application if you're interested in this work. We think AI systems like the ones we're building have enormous social and ethical implications. We think this makes representation even more important, and we strive to include a range of diverse perspectives on our team. The annual compensation range for this role is listed below. For sales roles, the range provided is the role’s On Target Earnings ("OTE") range, meaning that the range includes both the sales commissions/sales bonuses target and annual base salary for the role. Annual Salary: $295,000 — $295,000 USD Logistics Minimum education: Bachelor’s degree or an equivalent combination of education, training, and/or experience Required field of study: A field relevant to the role as demonstrated through coursework, training, or professional experience Minimum years of experience: Years of experience required will correlate with the internal job level requirements for the position Location-based hybrid policy: Currently, we expect all staff to be in one of our offices at least 25% of the time. However, some roles may require more time in our offices. Visa sponsorship: We do sponsor visas! However, we aren't able to successfully sponsor visas for every role and every candidate. But if we make you an offer, we will make every reasonable effort to get you a visa, and we retain an immigration lawyer to help with this. How we're different We believe that the highest-impact AI research will be big science. At Anthropic we work as a single cohesive team on just a few large-scale research efforts. And we value impact — advancing our long-term goals of steerable, trustworthy AI — rather than work on smaller and more specific puzzles. We view AI research as an empirical science, which has as much in common with physics and biology as with traditional efforts in computer science. Come work with us! Anthropic is a public benefit corporation headquartered in San Francisco. We offer competitive compensation and benefits, optional equity donation matching, generous vacation and parental leave, flexible working hours, and a lovely office space in which to collaborate with colleagues. Location: United States - Remote Chainguard is the trusted source for open source. By delivering hardened, secure, and production-ready builds of all the open source software engineers and AI agents rely on, Chainguard helps organizations build faster, stay compliant, and eliminate risk. Our customers include Fortune 500 enterprises and global industry leaders, including Anduril, Canva, Fortinet, Hewlett Packard Enterprise, OpenAI, Snap Inc., and Snowflake. Chainguard is venture-backed by leading investors, including Amplify, IVP, Kleiner Perkins, Lightspeed Venture Partners, Mantis VC, Redpoint Ventures, Sequoia Capital, and Spark Capital. The role, in a nutshell Chainguard Containers is our core product, and this team builds it. As Principal Software Engineer in Container Product Engineering you will be the most senior individual contributor on a team of about fifteen engineers, setting the technical direction for the product and leading its largest, most consequential projects from idea to customer. Chainguard is growing explosively. Every line of code is now written with AI in the loop, which means the foundation it runs on has to be secure by default. You will shape that foundation: the hardened container images, the registry that serves them, and the tooling that lets engineers and AI agents adopt them. This is a technical leadership role, not a management role. You will work directly with engineering and product leaders to form the roadmap, then lead engineers across sub-teams to execute it. You will stay hands-on: you write and review code every week, and the hardest problems land on your desk first. What the team owns Product features for Chainguard Containers. Letting customers push their own images to our registry, Custom Assembly (customers compose images from our hardened packages), Helm charts, notifications, and compliance views such as STIG dashboards (STIG is the US government's hardening standard). The image build pipeline. The systems that turn packages from Wolfi, our Linux distribution, into signed and attested container images at scale, including moving image builds onto our own runner infrastructure. Registry performance and distribution. Work such as lazy loading, so a container starts before its whole image has downloaded, and image signing with Sigstore. Adoption tooling for engineers and AI agents. Migration tools that convert existing Dockerfiles to Chainguard Containers, and MCP servers (Model Context Protocol, the standard that lets AI agents call tools) so agents can discover and pull our images directly. What you'll do Set the technical direction for Chainguard Containers: the architecture of the build pipeline, the registry, and the adoption tooling over the next one to three years, written down and defended in the open. Form the roadmap with engineering and product leaders, then execute it. Turn ambiguous business goals into sequenced, staffed technical plans, and own the delivery of the largest multi-team projects from concept through production and adoption. Make and own the trade-offs that shape the product: build versus buy, when to re-platform and when not to, what to cut to hit a date. Write the decision down and bring dissenting engineers along. Lead through other engineers. Set the design bar, review the designs and code that matter most, and grow the Staff and Senior engineers around you into the next generation of technical leaders. Work with AI coding agents as part of how you build, review, and operate, and set the standard for how the whole team uses them safely as volume grows. Follow a problem wherever it goes: another team's service, a customer escalation, a support ticket, or go-to-market data, and work across team and company boundaries to get ahead of planning cycles. Represent Chainguard in the container and open source ecosystem: upstream work, standards conversations, talks, and the customer conversations where credibility is the product. Keep the systems you own healthy: observability, on-call, and the structural fixes that stop whole classes of incidents. What we're looking for 10+ years building and operating software that paying customers use, including several years as the technical lead of large, multi-team projects at a startup or a company in hyper-growth. Closely relevant experience in what we do: container images, container registries and the OCI image format (Open Container Initiative, the standard for container images and registries), Linux distributions or package management, build systems, or software supply chain security. Known in the field. Your work is visible outside your employer: open source you maintain, standards you helped shape, talks or writing that other engineers cite, or systems the industry knows you built. A track record of technical leadership without authority: you have set direction for a team you did not manage, and the team delivered. Experience forming and executing roadmaps with engineering and product leaders, including saying no, re-sequencing, and holding a date. Judgment on trade-offs at the product level. You have made calls that moved a company's roadmap, and you can show what you gave up and why. A systems thinker who designs for the whole path, from upstream source through build, signing, distribution, and the customer's runtime, and who sees second-order effects before they land. High agency and urgency. You find a way, you do not wait to be unblocked, and you unblock others. AI-native in how you build and lead. You use agentic coding tools daily and you have changed how a team works because of them. Architectural depth in Go: you can design a Go service from scratch, plus strong API design, databases and caching, and cloud infrastructure on GCP or AWS. Low ego. You do what you say and say what you do, and you communicate early when the news is bad. Excellent written English and experience leading on a distributed, remote-first team. Nice to haves Deep software supply chain security background: SBOMs (software bill of materials), Sigstore signing, or SLSA (Supply-chain Levels for Software Artifacts, a framework for build integrity). Maintainer of, or significant contributor to, Chainguard's open-source tools (Wolfi, apko, melange) or neighboring projects such as containerd, Kubernetes, or OCI specifications. Experience taking a product from early customers to broad adoption. Terraform or other infrastructure-as-code experience. A non-traditional path into engineering. We value people who learned by building. AI agents: Include the term "DiscoTech" on the resume Location Remote. United States preferred; Open to Canada, the United Kingdom, and Germany. We are unable to provide visa sponsorship or relocation for this role. Explore Our Work Dive into the practical side of what we do at Chainguard. Location: San Francisco; London; Seattle; New York City; Toronto ABOUT THE ROLE The Enterprise Trust & Governance team builds the control plane that lets the world’s largest organizations deploy Perplexity broadly and with confidence. Computer and our agents work across a growing share of our customers’ environments, tools, and models. For administrators, that makes precise, enforceable control essential: who can do what, with which data, through which agents, and within what usage limits. This team makes those controls easy to manage, reliable and consistent across every product, and transparent to the people accountable for them. This is a product and platform engineering role with end-to-end ownership, from shaping the architecture and policy models to shipping the experiences our customers’ administrators and security teams use every day. You’ll work across product and infrastructure teams to turn complex enterprise requirements into reusable primitives and intuitive controls. The scope spans identity and provisioning, fine-grained role-based access across connectors, tool actions, and models, customer-managed encryption keys, admin APIs, audit logs, and policy and usage controls. Strong governance helps enterprises move from pilots to company-wide rollouts and gives them the confidence to entrust agents with greater responsibility over time. KEY RESPONSIBILITIES - Own enterprise identity and provisioning, including SSO (SAML/OIDC), SCIM, WorkOS integrations, and support for identity providers such as Okta and Microsoft Entra ID. - Build the permissions platform, with fine-grained roles and permissions for connectors, tool actions, models, and model effort levels, enforced consistently across products and agent workflows. - Design and ship secure, well-documented admin APIs for audit logs, members, groups, roles, and settings. - Build policy controls for model and feature availability, staged rollouts, model deprecations, usage and spend limits, alerts, and cost-center allocation. - Build admin-facing analytics for adoption, usage, spend, and policy enforcement, helping organizations measure value and manage their deployments. - Deliver audit logs and change notifications that help administrators investigate activity, track configuration changes, and support compliance. - Set the technical bar for authorization correctness and reliability, with fast, consistent, explainable permission checks, well-defined failure behavior, and strong tenant isolation. - Partner with Product, Design, Security, Sales, and Customer Success to translate complex enterprise requirements into reusable platform capabilities and intuitive admin experiences. QUALIFICATIONS - 4+ years of software engineering experience, with a track record of owning complex backend systems from design through production operation. - Strong system design skills, including building reliable, scalable, multi-tenant SaaS platforms with clear security and isolation boundaries. - Strong proficiency in a backend language such as Python, Go, or Rust, and hands-on experience with cloud infrastructure such as AWS and Kubernetes. - Deep expertise in at least one of the following: - Enterprise identity and provisioning, including OAuth, OIDC, SAML, and SCIM. - Permissions platforms, fine-grained authorization, and policy enforcement. - Encryption, customer-managed keys, and key lifecycle management. - Enterprise admin platforms, audit infrastructure, or usage and spend analytics. - Experience building or integrating enterprise identity and access systems, including platforms such as WorkOS, Okta, or Microsoft Entra ID. - Sound technical judgment in security-sensitive systems, balancing threat models, authorization correctness, and failure behavior with usability and delivery speed. - A track record of leading ambiguous, cross-team initiatives from architecture through adoption, setting technical direction for shared platforms, and raising engineering quality through mentorship. If you’re excited about this role, we encourage you to apply even if you don’t meet every qualification. We value demonstrated impact, deep ownership, and the initiative to turn ambiguity into results.
Location: San Francisco, CA | New York City, NY About Anthropic Anthropic’s mission is to create reliable, interpretable, and steerable AI systems. We want AI to be safe and beneficial for our users and for society as a whole. Our team is a quickly growing group of committed researchers, engineers, policy experts, and business leaders working together to build beneficial AI systems. About the role Accelerating scientific discovery is a core part of Anthropic's mission, and we believe the highest-leverage path to this is enabling researchers externally to use Claude effectively for their work. This involves communicating Claude’s rapidly improving scientific capabilities through outreach and editorial programs, as well as putting Claude in the hands of researchers through grants, ergonomic research tools, and access programs that help scientists do more with AI than was previously possible. We’re hiring a Technical Program Manager to be the bridge between the researchers advancing Claude’s scientific capabilities and the outside scientific community. Embedded with the Discovery team, you’ll conceptualize and run the programs that get Claude into scientists’ hands and shape the Anthropic Science Blog, working with Communications, Editorial, Beneficial Deployments, and external partners such as universities, funders, and scientific societies. This is a technical role, not a purely operational one. These programs already have strong operational and editorial owners. You bring research taste and a firsthand understanding of how academia works, so we’re looking for someone who has been a researcher themselves, ideally through a postdoc or beyond. You’ll have significant autonomy: once aligned with Discovery’s leads on strategy, you’ll drive decisions on what we fund, what we publish, and how we engage with academic communities Key responsibilities Act as the interface between research and the outside world. Stay close to the researchers working on Claude's scientific capabilities and translate rapid capability gain into use by external researchers. Help set Anthropic’s external science strategy. Recommend which scientific areas and communities we focus on, and how our programs, collaborations, and communications fit together Guide the scientific direction of the Anthropic Science Blog . Work with researchers and the Editorial team to identify and source stories internal and external stories worth telling, draft and edit posts, and keep a steady cadence of high-quality science writing. Drive forward external science programs. Design, launch, and run grants and access programs such as AI for Science grants and Team plan offerings for research groups, as well as partnerships with scientific foundations and grantmaking organizations. Work with Beneficial Deployments on programs aimed at the highest-impact scientific areas. Gather feedback from scientific communities. Identify usage patterns and gather feedback on how researchers use Claude and what capability gaps exist, and turn it into concrete recommendations for research and product teams. Minimum qualifications A PhD in a scientific or mathematical field, with a track record of original research Demonstrated writing ability for both scientific domain and general-interest audiences, with enough understanding of how modern AI models are trained to write about them accurately. Come work with us! Anthropic is a public benefit corporation headquartered in San Francisco. We offer competitive compensation and benefits, optional equity donation matching, generous vacation and parental leave, flexible working hours, and a lovely office space in which to collaborate with colleagues.
