About Anthropic
Anthropic’s mission is to create reliable, interpretable, and steerable AI systems. We want AI to be safe and beneficial for our users and for society as a whole. Our team is a quickly growing group of committed researchers, engineers, policy experts, and business leaders working together to build beneficial AI systems.
About the role:
The Safeguards ML Inference Path team designs, builds, and operates the production infrastructure that powers Claude's ML based safety systems. We collaborate closely with safety researchers and inference engineers to bring new classifiers and novel classes of ML defenses to production. We own the research → production transfer of new safety technologies that is on the critical path for every Claude model launch. And we build for scale: serving thousands of ML classifiers, for all requests on the token generation path, and for every platform Claude runs on -- 1P, Bedrock, Vertex, and beyond.
We’re growing the team and looking for engineers who have deep expertise in productionizing ML systems. You'll work at the intersection of machine learning, large-scale distributed systems, and AI safety, developing the platforms and tools that enable our safeguards to operate reliably at scale. And your tooling and infrastructure will be used for every model launch, which are becoming more complex, and more frequent.
Responsibilities:
Design and build scalable ML infrastructure to support real-time safety deployments across our classifier and model ecosystem
Build monitoring and observability tools to track classifier performance, data quality, and system health for safety-critical applications
Collaborate with research teams to productionize safety research, translating experimental safety techniques into robust, scalable systems
Optimize inference latency and throughput for real-time safety evaluations while maintaining high reliability standards
Implement automated testing, deployment, and rollback systems for ML models in production safety applications
Partner with Safeguards, Security, and Alignment teams to understand requirements and deliver infrastructure that meets safety and production needs
Contribute to the development of internal tools and frameworks that accelerate safety research and deployment
You may be a good fit if you:
Are proficient in Python and have experience with ML frameworks like PyTorch, TensorFlow, or JAX
Understand distributed systems principles and have built systems that handle high-throughput, low-latency workloads
Have built automated or self-service deployment pipelines and eval infrastructure allowing researchers to roll out classifiers and models independently
Have implemented A/B testing frameworks and experimentation infrastructure for ML systems
Are results-oriented, with a bias towards reliability and impact in safety-critical systems
Enjoy collaborating with researchers and translating cutting-edge research into production systems
Care deeply about AI safety and the societal impacts of your work
Strong candidates may also have experience with:
Have 5+ years of experience building production ML infrastructure, ideally in safety-critical domains like fraud detection, content moderation, or risk assessment
Working with large language models and modern transformer architectures
Developing monitoring and alerting systems for ML model performance and data drift
Experience in trust & safety, fraud prevention, or content moderation domains
Knowledge of privacy-preserving ML techniques and compliance requirements

How we're different
We believe that the highest-impact AI research will be big science. At Anthropic we work as a single cohesive team on just a few large-scale research efforts. And we value impact — advancing our long-term goals of steerable, trustworthy AI — rather than work on smaller and more specific puzzles. We view AI research as an empirical science, which has as much in common with physics and biology as with traditional efforts in computer science. We're an extremely collaborative group, and we host frequent research discussions to ensure that we are pursuing the highest-impact work at any given time. As such, we greatly value communication skills.
The easiest way to understand our research directions is to read our recent research. This research continues many of the directions our team worked on prior to Anthropic, including: GPT-3, Circuit-Based Interpretability, Multimodal Neurons, Scaling Laws, AI & Compute, Concrete Problems in AI Safety, and Learning from Human Preferences.

The Safeguards ML Sampling Path team builds and operates the production services that power Claude's safety systems. These services sit on the token generation path across every platform Claude runs on: every request must pass through them, and each millisecond of added latency is wait time for our users. You’ll keep p99 latency flat as traffic grows, build for robustness as dependencies time out or partially fail, and ship changes safely to a system that cannot go down.
What you'll do:
Design, build, and operate the backend systems that process every token on the generation path for Claude requests, including the streaming contract with the API and inference engines.
Own latency and reliability end to end: define and maintain SLOs and error budgets for added latency, time-to-first-token, and availability, and lead incident response and postmortem follow-through.
Ship changes to the hot path rapidly but safely — canaried and gradual rollouts, error budget and latency gating, fast rollbacks — and drive per-token performance: chase tail latency and keep cost flat as traffic, models, and checks per request grow.
Set technical direction for the sampling path: lead design reviews, make latency, reliability, and cost trade-off calls with the inference and research teams, mentor engineers, and raise the operational bar for the wider Safeguards organization.
You may be a good fit if you:
Have designed, built, and operated high QPS systems at global scale, and were accountable for them in production: incident response, outages, and postmortem-driven remediation.
Have a strong foundation in distributed systems: replication, consistency tradeoffs, failure modes, and SLO management under load.
Design systems for graceful degradation: you plan for a slow dependency, a dropped stream, or a half-rolled-out deploy before it happens, and build so the system degrades predictably instead of failing.
Have successfully shipped broad or all-encompassing changes to mission critical systems (e.g., database migrations, interface changes, rewrites).
Strong candidates may also have:
8+ years of industry software engineering experience.
Familiarity with LLM inference systems and transformer-based models (not required, but a plus).

About the Team
IT Operations at ClickHouse keeps the company's internal systems, tooling, and infrastructure running securely and efficiently — from identity and endpoint management to the platforms every team relies on to do their work. This role sits on a newly formed AI Engineering function within IT Operations, created to centralize AI Ops rather than leave it disjointed across teams. The team — a Technical Lead plus one or two AI Ops Engineers — reporting to the IT Business Systems Manager, and brings the same rigor IT Ops applies to systems and infrastructure to the design, deployment, and lifecycle management of AI solutions and the agents they power.
About the Role
We are looking for an AI Ops Engineer to help build and run a new AI Ops function at ClickHouse. You will work under a Technical Lead to design, build, and maintain AI-driven solutions across the business (People, Finance, Legal, and beyond) and engineering — building integrations, maintaining agents, supporting cost visibility, and helping train the org on AI best practices. This is a hands-on execution role: you will move quickly, ship real workflows, and help the team learn what works as we centralize AI Ops for the first time.
Success
This is a net-new function; specific goals will be set with your Technical Lead. Directionally, the team is measured on:
- Measurable reduction in redundant or inefficient AI tool and model spend through right-sizing, routing, and cost visibility
- A working framework for evaluating and selecting models/tools by cost, latency, accuracy, and risk, adopted across teams
- Agents and AI workflows built, deployed, and maintained cross-functionally (People, Finance, Legal, Engineering, and beyond)
- Improved AI fluency and literacy org-wide, measured through training participation, adoption of approved tools, and reduced shadow-AI usage
- Established identity, access, audit, and lifecycle practices for AI agents that satisfy Security and GRC requirements
YOU WILL
Build AI-Powered Solutions
- Develop and deploy solutions using LLMs, automation frameworks, and internal tooling, for both business and engineering use cases
- Integrate AI into existing systems (HRIS, ATS, ERP, procurement orchestration, ticketing, CI/CD, developer tooling) and legal infrastructure like CLM or Matter Management
- Build workflows such as document generation, data extraction, knowledge retrieval, and decision support across systems and knowledge bases
- Use modern integration standards (e.g., MCP) to give AI models and agents direct, secure access to internal knowledge and context
Support Model Evaluation
- Help test and benchmark AI models against accuracy, latency, cost, and safety criteria
- Support model risk assessments and due diligence alongside Security and GRC
- Help implement and maintain the internal model routing solution
Support Cost Visibility
- Help build dashboards and reporting for AI/LLM spend across teams and tools

- Help provision, credential, and de-provision AI agent access
- Support deployment, versioning, monitoring, and retirement of agents
- Maintain and patch agent infrastructure and dependencies
- Help maintain audit trails and logging for agent actions
Deliver Training and Enablement
- Design and deliver company-wide AI training programs tailored to different audiences — non-technical business users through engineers
- Create lightweight playbooks, guides, templates, and reusable components for safe, effective AI adoption
- Run onboarding sessions, office hours, and workshops to build AI fluency and drive adoption of approved tools and agents
- Establish a feedback loop with users to continuously improve training content, tooling, and documentation
YOU BRING
You are not expected to have every skill below — tell us which are your strongest.
- Experience building with modern AI/ML tools and frameworks
- Experience building and consuming APIs, developing data pipelines, and architecting system integrations
- Working knowledge of cloud infrastructure (AWS, GCP, or Azure) and experience hosting or operating services in production
- Experience comparing and evaluating AI models across providers, including trade-offs between cost, latency, and quality
- Comfort working with usage and billing data to build cost visibility, forecasting, or optimization
- Ability to understand both business and engineering workflows and translate them into technical solutions
- Experience working with or integrating business systems as well as engineering/developer tooling
- Experience creating training materials, documentation, or workshops for mixed technical/non-technical audiences
- Understanding of data privacy, security, and compliance considerations
- Experience implementing safeguards in AI systems, including identity and access controls for automated/non-human actors

About GiveDirectly
What if the most effective way to fight poverty was also the simplest: give people money and trust them to decide what they need?
Since 2011, GiveDirectly has proven that idea at scale. We’ve delivered more than $1B in cash directly to 2+ million people living in poverty and crisis across 15 countries, and rigorous research shows the results: healthier kids, stronger businesses, sturdier homes, and more resilient families and local economies. Cash is now widely recognized as one of the most scalable, cost-effective, and dignified forms of aid.
Our ambition goes beyond our own programs. We want cash to become the benchmark for aid, much as the index fund became the benchmark for investing, so that every aid dollar is held to one question:
is this doing more good than giving the money directly to people living in poverty?
We’re growing fast, and this is a rare and important moment to join.
We expect to hit $1B in revenue in 2026 with significant growth forecast for 2027. At the same time we are building a new technology stack and operating model designed for a roughly 10x change in scale, and we are actively pursuing partnerships with major funders to move even more money in bigger ways, to people who need it. We are known for our extensive integration of technology into field processes; our quantitative approach to performance measurement; and our commitment to rigorous, independent, experimental evaluation of our impact, with multiple Randomized Control Trials completed and others in progress.
How we work
Our team spans 20+ countries and 69 languages. Our culture is candid, analytical, and non-hierarchical. We expect high ownership and give people real responsibility early. Our values are central to how we hire, work, and grow, and they are deliberately opinionated:
Recipients first.
Recipients’ preferences come before those of donors or ourselves.
Team next.
We optimize for organizational success, not individual success.
Be proactively candid.
We say what we believe and share information openly.
Create positive energy.
We aim to be a source of energy for colleagues, not a drain.
Think rigorously; act quickly.
We reason from first principles, then act rather than debate.
Know yourself and grow.
We own our imperfections and seek feedback to grow.
Accept reality. Propose solutions.
We focus on what can change and bring solutions, not just problems.
Be productively ambitious.
We take risks for step-change impact, not incremental progress.
If they describe how you like to work and they energize you, this could be a great fit.

Our team is a quickly growing group of committed researchers, engineers, policy experts, and business leaders working together to build beneficial AI systems.
About the Team
The Security team protects Anthropic's AI systems and maintains the trust of our users and society.
About the Role
At Anthropic, we are pioneering new frontiers in AI that have the potential to greatly benefit society. However, developing advanced AI also comes with risks if not properly safeguarded. As a Research Engineer, you'll help to safely advance the capabilities of our models in incident response, security analysis, vulnerability remediation, and other areas of defensive cybersecurity.
This role blends research and engineering, requiring you to both develop novel approaches and realize them in code. Your work will include designing and implementing RL environments, conducting experiments and evaluations, delivering your work into production training runs, and collaborating with other researchers, engineers, and cybersecurity specialists across and outside Anthropic.
This role requires ML experience combined with domain expertise in cybersecurity. You might be an ML researcher with a history of cybersecurity work, or a security professional with a background in ML.
Responsibilities
Partner with researchers and safety teams across Anthropic to understand their analytical needs and build solutions
Develop agentic integrations that allow AI systems to autonomously investigate and act on analytical findings
Contribute to the strategic direction of the team, including decisions about what to build, what to partner on, and where to invest
This role may require participation in an on-call rotation.
You may be a good fit if you
Have experience with machine learning.
Have experience in cybersecurity research.
Have strong software engineering skills.
Can balance research exploration with engineering implementation.
Are passionate about AI's potential and committed to developing safe and beneficial systems.
Strong candidates may also have
Professional experience in security engineering, fuzzing, detection and response, or other applied defensive work.
Experience participating in or building CTF competitions and cyber ranges.
Academic research experience in cybersecurity or other experimental & research background.
Familiarity with RL techniques and environments.
Familiarity with LLM training methodologies.
Logistics
Minimum education:
Bachelor’s degree or an equivalent combination of education, training, and/or experience
Required field of study:
A field relevant to the role as demonstrated through coursework, training, or professional experience
Minimum years of experience:
Years of experience required will correlate with the internal job level requirements for the position
Location-based hybrid policy:
Currently, we expect all staff to be in one of our offices at least 25% of the time. However, some roles may require more time in our offices.
Visa sponsorship:
We do sponsor visas! However, we aren't able to successfully sponsor visas for every role and every candidate. But if we make you an offer, we will make every reasonable effort to get you a visa, and we retain an immigration lawyer to help with this.
We encourage you to apply even if you do not believe you meet every single qualification.
Not all strong candidates will meet every single qualification as listed. Research shows that people who identify as being from underrepresented groups are more prone to experiencing imposter syndrome and doubting the strength of their candidacy, so we urge you not to exclude yourself prematurely and to submit an application if you're interested in this work. We think AI systems like the ones we're building have enormous social and ethical implications. We think this makes representation even more important, and we strive to include a range of diverse perspectives on our team.
Your safety matters to us.

Come work with us!
Anthropic is a public benefit corporation headquartered in San Francisco. We offer competitive compensation and benefits, optional equity donation matching, generous vacation and parental leave, flexible working hours, and a lovely office space in which to collaborate with colleagues.

About the role
Anthropic's Integrity & Compliance (I&C) function is building the systems that let us scale responsibly as our products reach more people, more enterprises, and more regulated industries. Our global compliance program is bespoke, reflecting our unique mission and position as one of the leading AI labs operating on the frontier.
Our Regulatory Programs pillar is a key pillar of our overall Integrity & Compliance function and covers a range of compliance domain areas including economic sanctions, US export controls, and regulatory compliance programs stemming from global content and AI regulation.
As Sanctions Compliance Lead, you will take day-to-day leadership of Anthropic's sanctions compliance program and support oversight of our export controls program, supporting the Regulatory Programs lead as a senior leader within the function. This is a leadership seat in a domain where the rules governing AI models and compute are still being written, and where sanctions exposure runs through globally accessible APIs, downstream and embedded-partner channels, and rapid geographic expansion.
You will own the sanctions program end to end: setting strategy and risk appetite with leadership, continuously assessing risk and driving remediation and program enhancements, governing our screening and enforcement controls, directing regulator-facing matters, and reporting on program health to I&C leadership and the Audit Committee. You will partner closely with our in-house Trade Compliance Counsel on interpretation of applicable law, represent the function with senior stakeholders, and lead and develop trade compliance professionals as the team grows. This is a builder's role at a company that takes integrity seriously and moves fast. You will exercise independent judgment on issues without clear precedent and build durable programs that let Anthropic move quickly while honoring its obligations to regulators, customers, and the public.
Key responsibilities
Lead Anthropic's sanctions compliance program, including strategy, risk appetite, policy frameworks, and the program roadmap, and keep them current as regulations and the business evolve
Represent the sanctions and export controls function with senior leadership and cross-functional partners, and step in for the Regulatory Programs lead across the function as needed
Continuously assess sanctions risk across products, channels, and markets, and own the remediation of identified issues and the delivery of program enhancements, in partnership with Legal, Internal Audit, Finance, and first-line teams
Direct regulator-facing matters, including voluntary self-disclosures, blocking and reject reports, licensing questions, and responses to regulator or third-party inquiries, in partnership with Trade Compliance Counsel and National Security Legal
Govern Anthropic's restricted-party screening and enforcement controls, including list configuration, thresholds, escalation criteria, vendor management, and exception review, in partnership with Regulatory Operations and Safeguards
Serve as the senior escalation point for complex sanctions matters surfaced by Safeguards, Threat Intelligence, Go-to-Market, and Finance, and set the standards by which first-line teams disposition and escalate cases
Advise business and product teams on sanctions and trade controls implications of commercial and geographic expansion, new products and channels, partnerships, and acquisitions, and translate findings into clear control requirements
Support oversight of the export controls program, partnering with the Sanctions & Export Controls Compliance Officer and Trade Compliance Counsel on program priorities, controls, and reporting
Prepare and deliver program reporting on health, key risks, and emerging issues for I&C and Legal leadership, the Audit Committee, and other governance forums
Monitor sanctions regulatory developments and enforcement actions, assess impact on Anthropic, and drive required program changes
Lead, mentor, and develop compliance team members, and help shape the structure of the function as it grows
Of course, this is just a sample of the kinds of work this role will require! You should assume that your role will encompass other tasks, too, and that your job duties and responsibilities may change from time to time at Anthropic's discretion, or otherwise applicable with local law
Minimum qualifications
Substantive, hands-on experience leading an economic sanctions compliance program (OFAC, EU, UK, and other applicable regimes) in a commercial environment, including program design, policy ownership, and risk governance
Experience managing voluntary self-disclosures, blocking or reject reports, and other regulator filings end to end, including coordinating counsel, internal stakeholders, and remediation
Experience assessing sanctions risk on an ongoing basis and owning the remediation of identified issues and delivery of program enhancements through to closure
Experience governing a restricted-party screening program, including list scope, match thresholds, escalation criteria, and screening vendor management
A track record of reporting on program health and risk to senior leadership, an audit committee, or a board, and of driving decisions on risk appetite with executives
Working knowledge of US export controls (EAR and BIS rules) sufficient to oversee an export controls program and partner effectively with technical subject-matter experts
Experience partnering with in-house and outside counsel to interpret trade controls requirements and translating them into practical guidance for product, engineering, operations, and commercial teams
Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including drafting policy and preparing materials for senior leadership
Preferred qualifications
10+ years of relevant experience in economic sanctions compliance, including several years leading a program or team
Experience managing and developing compliance professionals
Experience conducting sanctions diligence for acquisitions, vendors, and third parties, including state-ownership and 50 percent rule analysis
Experience partnering with trust and safety, enforcement, or threat intelligence teams on account actions and sanctions escalations
Exposure to sanctions compliance in software, cloud, fintech, or AI contexts, including globally accessible platforms and downstream access risk
Prior experience in a Big 4 or other compliance consulting or advisory professional services firm, or at OFAC or another trade regulator
Experience in a hyper-scaling tech company or other fast-paced environment
Sound judgment and the ability to make risk-based decisions and move work forward with imperfect information
A leadership style characterized by integrity, humility, strategic thinking, and solution-orientation
Role-specific policy:
For this role, we expect staff to be able to work from either our Washington, DC, San Francisco, or New York City office at least 3 days a week, though we encourage you to apply even if you might need some flexibility for an interim period of time.

About GiveDirectly in the DRC
GiveDirectly DRC was established in 2018 to enable cash transfers to poor and rural populations via mobile phones, thereby promoting food security, poverty reduction, and financial inclusion. We aimed to demonstrate the operational feasibility and cost-effectiveness of transferring large volumes of money digitally in one of the world's least developed countries. Since its inception four years ago, GiveDirectly DRC has used mobile phones to transfer over $14 million to more than 65,000 beneficiaries in four provinces: South Kivu, North Kivu, Ituri, and Kinshasa.
GiveDirectly's activities in the DRC have expanded to include, among other things: compelling proofs of concept for mobile-based cash transfers; and the implementation of innovative technologies to target disadvantaged urban populations in Kinshasa, in collaboration with the DRC's social protection agency, the DRC Social Fund. The delivery of contactless cash to beneficiaries in Beni and Bunia affected by the economic consequences of COVID-19. You will be joining Give Directly DRC at an exciting time in its history, as we are establishing and hope to launch several new programs and strengthen our partnership with the DRC government.
About the Role
As Senior Manager, Operations (DRC), you'll build and lead the operational backbone behind GiveDirectly's programs in the country. You'll direct the support services team end-to-end — HR, logistics, procurement, and administration — while managing a team of managers. You'll design a procurement strategy that keeps goods and services flowing efficiently and reliably across provinces, own fleet and logistics management as the program scales, and manage the operational budget with an eye for efficiency. You'll also support the Country Director on HR strategy — recruitment, training, and performance — and design the systems needed for a much larger footprint across provinces, from procurement to digital tools that improve scalability.
This is a role for someone who can build systems as readily as they can lead people, and who's energized by both strategic design and the operational details that make it real on the ground.
What You’ll Do:
Lead the DRC support services team end-to-end — HR, logistics, procurement, administration, and office management — including direct oversight of managers
Develop and drive a procurement strategy ensuring efficient, compliant, and resilient sourcing across provinces, and own fleet and logistics management as the program scales
Manage the operational budget, forecasting and driving efficiency across procurement, logistics, and administrative spend
Support the Country Director on HR strategy — recruitment, training, performance management, and talent density — through oversight of the HR function
Design systems and processes to support a much larger footprint across provinces, anticipating future needs and identifying AI and digital opportunities to improve scalability
Coach and develop support services managers to build operational excellence beyond individual contribution
Maintain a compliance and operational risk register, and lead internal spot checks, audit preparedness, and action plans in partnership with Finance and Internal Audit
Own donor reporting, budget tracking, and donor visit coordination, and serve as the primary point of contact between the Country Office and GSS on operational and compliance matters
Own the Operational Knowledge Base and lead onboarding, training, and localization of materials as the team grows
Requirements:
Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field (management, administration, finance, or related); a master's degree is an asset
Minimum 6 years of experience in operations management, with a track record of transforming informal systems into structured, compliant, and scalable ones, including direct oversight of managers
Strong financial and budget management skills, with experience managing an operational budget
Proven experience maintaining a risk register and working closely with internal/external audit functions
Experience developing and coaching managers, with comfort delegating execution while retaining accountability for results
Strong digital fluency, with experience using and training teams on multiple platforms (Google Suite, Salesforce, Asana, Guru, Slack)
Familiarity with international NGO standards and donor compliance frameworks
Experience navigating the DRC's complex legal environment, including labor law and immigration requirements
Strong alignment with
GiveDirectly's values
Excellent written and oral communication skills, including ability to communicate fluently in English and French with high level stakeholders
Professional proficiency in French and English required; knowledge of Congolese Swahili and/or Lingala is an asset
Compensation
At GiveDirectly, we strive to pay our employees generously and equitably. We use an accredited third party salary aggregator to calculate what we believe to be competitive pay based on role, location, and cost of living. We also have a no negotiation policy to ensure we are paying staff equitably across roles. Read more about our compensation philosophy

.
Unless otherwise noted, the benefits stipend may be used to cover benefits or taken as additional taxable income.
Base Salary:
$94,500
Bonus at Target Performance:
10% (~$9,450, with potential for upside. For reference, with the organization’s current performance multiplier, this amount would be $11,057 in 2025)
Estimated Total Compensation at Target: $103,950+

As Senior Manager, Programs (DRC), you'll help bring GiveDirectly's programs in the Democratic Republic of Congo to life — owning their end-to-end execution, from operational design to on-the-ground delivery. You'll blend strategic thinking with hands-on problem-solving: designing systems that work, catching risks before they escalate, and using data to drive continuous improvement. You'll also lead people, managing a team of managers and field staff, while partnering closely with the Program Director and Country Director to shape what comes next. It's a role for someone who's energized by both the big picture and the operational details that make it real.
What You’ll Do:
Develop detailed project management plans for all our programs and drive them through successful end-to-end execution
Design operational models for new programs — including targeting, payments, and customer service — and define, monitor, and report on key operational and efficiency indicators
Identify operational vulnerabilities, such as fraud or reputational risk, and implement mitigation solutions aligned with the risk framework set by the Program Director
Analyze program-level data to diagnose the causes of underperformance and drive continuous quality improvement
Partner with Tech and Data teams to design surveys and ensure data integrity in Salesforce
Directly manage a team of managers, with oversight of field teams and call centre at multiple levels
Support the Program Director and Country Director in scoping new programs, including operational feasibility and risk assessment.
Manage partner relationships with key operational partners with oversight of scoping, contracting and ensuring the terms of our agreements are respected.
Develop materials for engagement with donors and other external stakeholders in order to represent our work externally.
Requirements:
Minimum 6 years of experience managing and implementing programs within international NGOs or a comparable operational environment; experience in cash or money transfer programming is an asset
Work experience in the DRC, or strong knowledge of the DRC context, is highly desirable
Experience in team management, including recruitment, team building, and development
Strong analytical thinking, with a proven ability to use data to identify problems and improve programs
Experience using technology and digital tools to drive results and operational innovation
Proven instinct for risk management and creative problem-solving in complex operational environments
A high degree of autonomy and resilience, with the ability to thrive in a fragile, rapidly changing environment
Strong alignment with
GiveDirectly's values
Excellent written and oral communication skills, including ability to communicate fluently in English and French with high level stakeholders
Professional proficiency in French and English required; knowledge of Congolese Swahili and/or Lingala is an asset

About the role
Anthropic's Safeguards organization builds the policies, evaluations, and enforcement systems that keep our models from contributing to catastrophic harm. We are hiring a manager to lead the research engineering team responsible for biological safety: the evaluations, datasets, and classifiers that govern how our models handle biological knowledge.
You will lead a team of research scientists and engineers who design and run capability evaluations against frontier models, curate training data for our safety classifiers, train and iterate on those classifiers alongside our ML engineers, and measure how they hold up against adversarial pressure in production traffic. You will set the technical direction for that work, decide where the team invests, and own the results.
This is a hands-on management role. Most of your time goes to growing and directing the team, but you will keep enough technical depth to review an eval design, interrogate a classifier's failure modes, and represent the work credibly to Research, Product, and Policy partners.
The core tension your team owns is precision: safeguards need to be robust against sophisticated actors while staying out of the way of the far larger population of legitimate researchers using Claude to accelerate life sciences work. Getting that tradeoff right is an empirical problem, and your team is the one measuring it.
Key responsibilities
Manage, coach, and grow a team of research scientists and engineers working on biological safety evaluations and classifiers, including hiring, onboarding, performance, and career development
Set the technical direction and roadmap for the biological safety research agenda, and make the calls about what the team builds, what it deprioritizes, and when a safeguard is ready to ship
Own the quality of capability evaluations that assess what new models can do in the biological domain, and turn results into deployment recommendations that leadership can act on
Guide the development of training and evaluation datasets for our safety classifiers, working with internal and external threat modeling experts to ground them in realistic risk
Oversee the training and iteration of safety classifiers alongside ML engineers, optimizing jointly for adversarial robustness and low false-positive rates
Ensure the team invests in the tooling and pipelines that make evaluation and classifier development fast and repeatable
Establish how the team measures classifier and eval performance against production traffic, identifies gaps, and prioritizes improvements
Direct red-teaming and stress-testing of safeguards as threats, models, and product surfaces evolve
Partner with Research, Product, Policy, and government affairs colleagues to embed biological safety throughout the model development lifecycle, and serve as an escalation point for biological content
Represent the team's work in external communications including model cards, blog posts, and policy documents
Track developments in biology, machine learning, and biosecurity for their potential to create new risks or enable new mitigations
Minimum qualifications
Experience managing a technical team, including hiring, coaching, and performance management
A record of setting technical direction for a team and making prioritization calls under uncertainty
Proficiency in Python, with a background in scientific programming and data analysis
A solid grasp of ML fundamentals, sufficient to critically review evaluation design and classifier development
Knowledge of modern biology across both measurement and engineering: high-throughput assays and functional characterization, as well as gene synthesis, genome editing, strain construction, and protein engineering
Experience designing quantitative experiments or evaluations and drawing defensible conclusions from noisy results
Clear analytical and writing skills, and the ability to explain technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders
Familiarity with dual-use research concerns and biosecurity frameworks, such as select agent regulations, the Biological Weapons Convention, or Australia Group guidelines
Comfort with ambiguity and with shifting priorities as AI capabilities change
Motivation to prevent misuse without obstructing the beneficial work that makes up the vast majority of this field
Preferred qualifications
3+ years of people management experience, ideally leading research scientists, research engineers, or ML engineers
Experience building a team or function from a small headcount, including defining scope, hiring the first few people, and establishing how the team works
At least 8 years of hands-on experience in life sciences, with deep expertise in areas such as molecular biology, drug discovery, or computational biology
Experience working with large language models, including prompting, fine-tuning, or evaluation
Experience training or deploying classifiers or other ML systems in production, and comfort reasoning about precision and recall for rare, high-consequence categories where the base rate is very low
Experience developing ML methods for biological systems or biological data
Familiarity with adversarial robustness, red-teaming, or safety evaluation of ML systems
Experience leading complex technical projects across multiple stakeholder groups
