About Anthropic
Anthropic’s mission is to create reliable, interpretable, and steerable AI systems. We want AI to be safe and beneficial for our users and for society as a whole. Our team is a quickly growing group of committed researchers, engineers, policy experts, and business leaders working together to build beneficial AI systems.
About the role
Anthropic is looking for a Staff+ Software Engineer to work on the vector search infrastructure behind Claude. Retrieval is how Claude learns about the world. Web search across claude.ai, the API and agentic surfaces, memory across conversations, and the reinforcement learning workloads that train our next models all depend on fast, cheap, high-recall nearest-neighbor search over billions of vectors.
You'll join a small team responsible for the vector database layer that serves Claude's retrieval workloads: its architecture, performance, scalability and cost. This is a foundational role. The team is small, core architectural decisions are still open, and the engineers who join now will shape how the system evolves.
The role sits in our Databases organization and works day to day with the Search Platform team, which owns web search indexing, retrieval and serving, and the Memory & Search team, which owns search and memory inside claude.ai.
We're looking for someone who has built vector or search systems that ran in production, at scale, with real users and a real on-call. You'll be hands-on in the code, and you'll also be the person deciding how the pieces fit together.
Key responsibilities
Own the core of Anthropic's vector database layer: index structures, storage layout, query execution and the serving layer
Own production readiness - benchmarking against exact search, capacity planning, onboarding new workloads, and the operational tooling to run it at scale
Drive the recall, latency and cost trade-offs - quantization, filtered search, index build and refresh strategy, and how compute and storage are separated and scaled
Scale throughput by an order of magnitude as research and training demand grows, and work out whether the bottleneck is architecture, hardware or engineering bandwidth
Extend the retrieval stack toward hybrid retrieval - lexical search and fused ranking alongside vector search
Set the evaluation methodology for the system - recall targets, latency objectives, cost per query, and the regression detection that keeps them honest
Set technical direction for a growing team - lead design reviews, make architectural decisions others build on, and mentor the engineers joining the effort
Share the on-call for the systems you own
Minimum qualifications
Direct experience building a vector database or approximate nearest-neighbor search system that ran in production at scale
Deep knowledge of ANN index structures (graph-based, clustering-based or disk-resident approaches), vector quantization and filtered search
Experience with search relevance and ranking
Strong systems programming skills in a language such as Rust, C++ or Go, including performance-critical and memory-intensive code
Experience designing and operating large-scale distributed storage or serving systems with strict latency and reliability requirements
A track record of independently scoping and delivering ambiguous, multi-quarter technical projects
Strong written and verbal communication, with experience driving alignment across teams with different priorities
Interest in AI safety and Anthropic's mission
Preferred qualifications
Experience with object-storage-backed or disaggregated compute and storage database designs
Experience building or operating full-text search engines (inverted indexes, BM25) or hybrid retrieval systems
Familiarity with embedding models and the retrieval demands of LLM training and inference
Experience using GPUs or other accelerators for index build or search
Prior experience as a technical lead on a database or search infrastructure team
The annual compensation range for this role is listed below.
For sales roles, the range provided is the role’s On Target Earnings ("OTE") range, meaning that the range includes both the sales commissions/sales bonuses target and annual base salary for the role.
Annual Salary:
$320,000
—
$485,000 USD
Logistics
Minimum education:
Bachelor’s degree or an equivalent combination of education, training, and/or experience
Required field of study:
A field relevant to the role as demonstrated through coursework, training, or professional experience
Minimum years of experience:
Years of experience required will correlate with the internal job level requirements for the position
Location-based hybrid policy:
Currently, we expect all staff to be in one of our offices at least 25% of the time. However, some roles may require more time in our offices.
Visa sponsorship:
We do sponsor visas! However, we aren't able to successfully sponsor visas for every role and every candidate. But if we make you an offer, we will make every reasonable effort to get you a visa, and we retain an immigration lawyer to help with this.
We encourage you to apply even if you do not believe you meet every single qualification.
Not all strong candidates will meet every single qualification as listed. Research shows that people who identify as being from underrepresented groups are more prone to experiencing imposter syndrome and doubting the strength of their candidacy, so we urge you not to exclude yourself prematurely and to submit an application if you're interested in this work. We think AI systems like the ones we're building have enormous social and ethical implications. We think this makes representation even more important, and we strive to include a range of diverse perspectives on our team.
Your safety matters to us.
To protect yourself from potential scams, remember that Anthropic recruiters only contact you from @anthropic.com email addresses. In some cases, we may partner with vetted recruiting agencies who will identify themselves as working on behalf of Anthropic. Be cautious of emails from other domains. Legitimate Anthropic recruiters will never ask for money, fees, or banking information before your first day. If you're ever unsure about a communication, don't click any links—visit

directly for confirmed position openings.
How we're different
We believe that the highest-impact AI research will be big science. At Anthropic we work as a single cohesive team on just a few large-scale research efforts. And we value impact — advancing our long-term goals of steerable, trustworthy AI — rather than work on smaller and more specific puzzles. We view AI research as an empirical science, which has as much in common with physics and biology as with traditional efforts in computer science. We're an extremely collaborative group, and we host frequent research discussions to ensure that we are pursuing the highest-impact work at any given time. As such, we greatly value communication skills.
The easiest way to understand our research directions is to read our recent research. This research continues many of the directions our team worked on prior to Anthropic, including: GPT-3, Circuit-Based Interpretability, Multimodal Neurons, Scaling Laws, AI & Compute, Concrete Problems in AI Safety, and Learning from Human Preferences.
Come work with us!
Anthropic is a public benefit corporation headquartered in San Francisco. We offer competitive compensation and benefits, optional equity donation matching, generous vacation and parental leave, flexible working hours, and a lovely office space in which to collaborate with colleagues.

We’re training and deploying frontier models for enterprises who are building AI systems. We believe that our work is instrumental to the widespread adoption of AI and we are looking for folks that want to be part of that.
We obsess over what we build. Each one of us is responsible for contributing to increasing the capabilities of our models and the value they drive for our customers. Cohere is a team of researchers, engineers, designers, and more, who are all passionate about their craft.
We are a global technology company headquartered in Toronto with key offices in London, New York City, San Francisco, Montreal, Paris, Berlin and Seoul. Join us!
Why This Role?
We're seeking an experienced Program Manager to join Cohere's customer-facing Program Management team, with a focus on public sector and defence accounts in Europe, particularly in Germany. This is a highly specialised role requiring an individual who understands technical program delivery, the technical complexity of frontier AI models and the unique requirements of government and defence organisations.
You will be the critical bridge between our cutting-edge AI capabilities and the specific needs of Ministries, Agencies, and defence organisations across Europe. You'll navigate complex procurement processes, stringent security requirements, data sovereignty concerns, and regulatory compliance while ensuring our customers successfully deploy and scale our AI solutions.
In this role, you'll collaborate with our Strategic Customer team, Applied ML (AML) Engineering, Forward Deployed Engineering (FDE), Platform, Product, and Go-to-Market teams, serving as the technical program lead and trusted advisor for our most sensitive and high-impact government and defence engagements.
Location: Germany
Eligibility: This individual must be a German citizen living in Germany and fluent in German, enabling immediate engagement with critical defense and national security customers.
Security Clearance: German security clearance is not required, but is a strong nice-to-have.
What You'll Do
Customer Program Leadership:
- Own end-to-end technical program delivery for Germany and broader European public sector and defence customers, from initial deployment through production scaling
- Serve as the primary technical program point of contact for customers, building trusted relationships with departmental CIOs, IT directors, and technical teams
- Translate complex public sector and defence requirements (security, compliance, accessibility, bilingualism, data sovereignty) into actionable engineering plans
- Navigate complex procurement processes, RFP responses, and contractual technical obligations.
Strategic Communication:
- Provide clear, timely, and objective communication across Cohere's engineering organisation, customer stakeholders, pubic sector and defence leadership
- Translate between AI/ML technical concepts and government-appropriate language for decision-makers who may not have deep technical backgrounds
- Present technical roadmaps and status updates to senior stakeholders including departmental executives
- Represent Cohere's technical capabilities in sensitive government and defence contexts.
Complex Program Management:
- Create and manage project schedules that account for public sector and defence timelines, security review processes, and approval cycles
- Identify and manage dependencies across government departments, security authorities, cloud service providers, and internal Cohere teams
- Navigate risks unique to government and defence deployments: privacy compliance, security, political and regulatory, technology and infrastructure.
- Drive alignment between product development priorities and specific customer requirements.
Technical Delivery & Execution:
- Ensure on-time delivery of AI solutions that meet security, privacy, accessibility, and performance standards
- Coordinate technical work across multiple teams: model customisation, security hardening, integration with government systems, bilingual support
- Establish governance checkpoints appropriate for high-stakes government and defence deployments
- Problem-solve complex technical challenges in air-gapped, on-premises, or highly regulated environments.
You May Be a Good Fit If:
Required Experience:
- 6+ years of experience as a customer-facing Technical or Engineering Program Manager in AI/ML consulting, technology transformation, or enterprise software delivery.
- Excellent executive communication and stakeholder management.
- Experience working with government, defence, or heavily regulated customers.
- Proven track record managing complex, multi-stakeholder technical programs with stringent compliance requirements.
- Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field; advanced degree or technical certs a plus.
Technical Background:
- Strong understanding of enterprise software deployment architectures (cloud, on-premises, hybrid, air-gapped)
- Working knowledge of or experience with modern AI: LLMs, agentic systems, MCP, RAG, fine-tuning, evals, and responsible AI would be a strong differentiator
- Comfortable discussing API integrations, model inference, data pipelines, and ML operations with technical stakeholders.
Government & Defence Acumen:
- Deep understanding of how government and defence organisations procure, evaluate, and deploy technology
- Familiarity with European government requirements: data sovereignty, privacy laws (Privacy Act), accessibility standards, official languages obligations, security classifications
- Understanding of defence and national security considerations in AI deployment
- Experience with Algorithmic Impact Assessments or AI ethics frameworks is a strong asset
- Eligible to obtain a German security clearance
Nice to Have:
- Active German security clearance
- Bilingual (English/German) proficiency
- Background in or strong familiarity with European defence, intelligence, or critical infrastructure sectors
- Experience with GC Cloud services (Azure, AWS GovCloud) or Protected B/C environments
- Project management certification (PMP, PgMP) or government-specific methodologies.
Security Clearance Requirements
This role strongly prefers eligibility for German government security clearance.
We are looking for candidates eligible for German government clearance, meaning that they require German citizenship. In addition, this individual is required to be based in Germany and be fluent in German as this will enable immediate engagement with critical defence and national security customers.
What Makes This Role Unique
This isn't typical program management - it's a highly specialised role at the intersection of frontier AI, national security, and public sector digital transformation. You'll work on some of Canada's most sensitive and impactful AI deployments, helping government organisations harness cutting-edge technology while maintaining the highest standards of security, ethics, and accountability.

About Our Clients
We are a recruiting partner representing
three leading, fast-growing e-commerce retention agencies
currently scaling their teams. By applying to this single role, you will be considered for three distinct agency dynamics depending on your background and career goals:
They are looking for experienced
Lifecycle & Retention Growth Strategists
who can take ownership of customer retention, lifecycle marketing, and growth initiatives.
The Enterprise Scale Agency:
Best for strategists who love global teams, structured multi-person account pods, and managing high-profile global brand portfolios.
The Agile Boutique Studio:
Best for autonomous, execution-focused strategists who love working closely with founders and driving rapid list growth for 7-figure brands.
The Data & Tech-Heavy Growth Shop:
Best for analytical minds who love custom data pipelines, proprietary funnel architectures, and leveraging advanced AI production tools.
This is a strategic, hands-on role for someone who understands how to turn customer and performance data into actions that improve revenue, retention, engagement, and customer lifetime value.
Depending on the client, your scope may include email and SMS marketing, lifecycle automation, retention strategy, subscription growth, customer journeys, experimentation, and cross-functional team leadership.
Key responsibilities
Own lifecycle and retention strategy across email, SMS, subscription, and other customer touchpoints based on business needs.
Analyze customer, campaign, retention, and revenue data to identify opportunities and determine what should be tested or optimized.
Develop and execute experiments around offers, messaging, segmentation, customer journeys, subscription conversion, retention, and lifecycle engagement.
Build and optimize lifecycle programs, including campaigns, automated flows, onboarding, post-purchase, winback, cancellation/save journeys, and other retention initiatives.
Translate data and customer behavior into clear strategic recommendations and actionable plans.
Own performance against key business outcomes such as revenue, retention, customer lifetime value, subscription take rate, churn, or lifecycle program performance.
Work directly with clients, founders, or senior stakeholders to present performance, recommendations, and strategic priorities.
Lead and coordinate cross-functional teams including copywriters, designers, project managers, developers, and other marketing specialists.
Provide clear briefs, direction, feedback, and quality control to ensure execution aligns with strategy and brand requirements.
Troubleshoot lifecycle marketing, CRM, subscription, or customer journey issues and provide practical solutions.
Identify opportunities to improve processes, systems, and workflows, including the use of AI and automation where appropriate.
Monitor account/customer health and proactively identify risks, performance gaps, and opportunities for improvement.
Help build scalable playbooks, processes, and best practices that improve lifecycle and retention performance across the business.
Requirements
5+ years of experience in lifecycle marketing, retention marketing, CRM, growth marketing, email/SMS marketing, subscription growth, or a closely related field.
Strong understanding of DTC/ecommerce, consumer, subscription, or digital businesses and how customer retention contributes to revenue and profitability.
Proven experience using data to make strategic marketing or growth decisions rather than simply executing predefined campaigns.
Strong experience with lifecycle marketing platforms such as Klaviyo or comparable CRM/marketing automation tools.
Hands-on understanding of customer segmentation, automated journeys/flows, retention programs, experimentation, and performance optimization.
Experience owning measurable business outcomes such as revenue, retention, churn, LTV, conversion, subscription growth, or lifecycle performance.
Strong analytical skills and the ability to translate performance data into clear recommendations and next actions.
Comfortable working directly with clients, founders, CMOs, or senior stakeholders and communicating recommendations with confidence.
Strong project ownership and organizational skills, with the ability to manage multiple priorities without losing attention to detail.
Able to work cross-functionally and direct or collaborate with creative, project management, development, and marketing teams.
Strong written and verbal English communication skills suitable for client-facing work.
Self-directed, commercially minded, proactive, and comfortable operating in fast-moving environments.
Strong attention to detail and ownership mentality; you check your own work and take responsibility for outcomes, not just assigned tasks.
Experience using AI tools such as ChatGPT or Claude to improve marketing workflows, analysis, content development, or operational efficiency is a plus.
Benefits
Competitive USD compensation based on experience and client requirements.
Remote flexibility – work from anywhere while collaborating with international teams.
Opportunities to work with international companies across ecommerce, DTC, subscription, and digital businesses.
High-ownership roles with exposure to strategy, experimentation, and business growth.
