Our team of 1,500+ includes hundreds of engineers with deep expertise across hardware, software and AI R&D. We are seeking a Staff Applied AI Researcher to join a fast-growing team building an agent-native search platform - the web access layer for AI systems. You can think of this as Google search, but for AI agents: a system designed for machines, not humans. We are building agentic search, where AI systems actively plan, retrieve, evaluate, and refine information rather than simply returning results. As AI becomes the primary interface to the web, this layer will replace the role of traditional search engines. We are designing these systems to search and reason over web data in real time, under strict latency and reliability constraints. This means solving retrieval, ranking and passage extraction under entirely new access patterns and at significant scale, with systems operating over constantly changing, unstructured data and serving tens of thousands of production workloads 24/7. This role comes with ownership over key parts of our applied AI research direction and system design, with a strong expectation of defining new approaches and shipping measurable impact in production. In the first year, you will own a specific part of the search stack, e.g. ranking or iterative retrieval. What you'll work on: Designing an agent-native search system that handles everything from low-latency single-hop search to complex deep search tasks requiring iterative planning, querying, refinement and reasoning. Training ranking and retrieval models optimized for agent-driven workflows under real world constraints Bringing the latest advances from the research community to our search stack and ship it to production. Your responsibilities: Drive applied research and technical direction across retrieval and ranking systems Design and evolve multi-stage retrieval architectures (query understanding, rewriting, retrieval, reranking and iterative retrieval) Lead experimentation on modern retrieval approaches (embedding research, sparse and hybrid retrieval, reranking, context compression) and bring them into production Develop methods for grounding LLMs in real-time web data at scale, using trust, quality and freshness signals to surface reliable sources Partner with the evaluation team to define new metrics for agentic systems, where correctness is not reducible to clicks Analyze trade-offs across relevance, latency, and cost, and work closely with engineering to deploy systems that operate at web scale Mentor researchers and engineers and help raise the technical bar of the team Must haves: 8+ years of experience in applied AI, ML, or software engineering Proven track record of shipping ML or AI systems to production at scale Deep experience with search, retrieval, ranking or building RAG-based assistants Strong understanding of modern deep learning, especially transformers and embeddings Experience with LLM-integrated or knowledge-intensive systems Experience designing evaluation frameworks and metrics for ML systems Strong programming skills in Python Top-tier publications ( ICLR , ICML , NeurIPS, AAAI , EMNLP , ACL ) Ability to operate in a fast-moving, product-driven environment with high ownership and autonomy Nice to haves Background in agentic AI systems (agents, tool use, autonomous workflows) Experience with RL post-training of LLMs or VLMs Benefits & Perks: Competitive compensation Career growth and learning opportunities Flexibility and ownership Collaborative and innovative culture Opportunity to work on impactful AI projects International environment and talented teams What's it like to work at Nebius: Fast moving - Bold thinking - Constant growth - Meaningful impact - Trust and real ownership - Opportunity to shape the future of AI Equal Opportunity Statement: Nebius is an equal opportunity employer. Location: San Francisco, CA | New York City, NY About Anthropic Anthropic’s mission is to create reliable, interpretable, and steerable AI systems. We want AI to be safe and beneficial for our users and for society as a whole. Our team is a quickly growing group of committed researchers, engineers, policy experts, and business leaders working together to build beneficial AI systems. About the role Anthropic is looking for an Engineering Manager to lead the Search Platform team. This team builds the search stack behind Claude: the indexes, retrieval and ranking systems and serving infrastructure that power web search across claude.ai , the API and agentic surfaces. Search is core to how Claude answers questions about the world, and the team owns both the problem and the solution end to end: growing the index, improving retrieval quality and running the serving stack at production scale. The same platform also serves research workloads, so demand comes from multiple user surfaces, often at the same time. The role carries a product dimension. Search sits close to the user experience and PM coverage is thin at times, so often the EM helps decide what a good search experience looks like, not just how to build it. You'll partner with product teams shipping search-backed features, research teams that depend on retrieval quality and capacity, and the infrastructure teams that run the systems underneath. We're looking for someone with real search experience who can be hands-on when needed: reviewing designs, digging into relevance regressions and holding their own in technical debates. Key Responsibilities Lead and grow the team of engineers building Anthropic's search platform: indexing, retrieval, ranking and serving Own the strategy and roadmap for the platform and how Claude's search needs are met over time Own search quality: evaluation methodology, relevance measurement, regression detection and the ranking improvements they drive Operate the platform at scale, balancing product traffic against research and training demand while holding a high bar on reliability, latency and cost Wear the product hat when the work calls for it: prioritize what the search experience needs, sequence launches and represent search in product discussions Drive cross-team collaboration with product, research and infrastructure partners; articulate dependencies, risks and progress clearly Be hands-on where it matters: design reviews, incident follow-ups and the occasional deep dive into why relevance moved Recruit, close and retain strong engineers in a competitive market Minimum Qualifications Significant experience managing engineering teams, including hiring and growing a team through rapid change Direct experience building or operating search systems at scale: indexing, retrieval, ranking or query serving Enough technical depth to be hands-on when needed; you can review designs, read code and engage credibly with senior ICs A product mindset and comfort making product calls when there isn't a PM in the room A track record of running high-scale, latency-sensitive production systems with real reliability requirements Strong cross-functional skills; you can align product, research and infrastructure partners with different priorities Experience recruiting and closing senior engineers Interest in AI safety and Anthropic's mission Preferred Qualifications Experience with the economics of search: index freshness, storage and serving costs, quality vs cost tradeoffs Background in embeddings, ranking models or ML-based retrieval Experience migrating traffic off a vendor onto in-house infrastructure Exposure to LLM products and the retrieval demands of large-scale training and inference The annual compensation range for this role is listed below. For sales roles, the range provided is the role’s On Target Earnings ("OTE") range, meaning that the range includes both the sales commissions/sales bonuses target and annual base salary for the role. Annual Salary: $320,000 — $405,000 USD Logistics Minimum education: Bachelor’s degree or an equivalent combination of education, training, and/or experience Required field of study: A field relevant to the role as demonstrated through coursework, training, or professional experience Minimum years of experience: Years of experience required will correlate with the internal job level requirements for the position Location-based hybrid policy: Currently, we expect all staff to be in one of our offices at least 25% of the time. However, some roles may require more time in our offices. Visa sponsorship: We do sponsor visas! However, we aren't able to successfully sponsor visas for every role and every candidate. But if we make you an offer, we will make every reasonable effort to get you a visa, and we retain an immigration lawyer to help with this. We encourage you to apply even if you do not believe you meet every single qualification. Not all strong candidates will meet every single qualification as listed. Research shows that people who identify as being from underrepresented groups are more prone to experiencing imposter syndrome and doubting the strength of their candidacy, so we urge you not to exclude yourself prematurely and to submit an application if you're interested in this work. We think AI systems like the ones we're building have enormous social and ethical implications. We think this makes representation even more important, and we strive to include a range of diverse perspectives on our team. Your safety matters to us. To protect yourself from potential scams, remember that Anthropic recruiters only contact you from @anthropic.com email addresses. In some cases, we may partner with vetted recruiting agencies who will identify themselves as working on behalf of Anthropic. Be cautious of emails from other domains. Legitimate Anthropic recruiters will never ask for money, fees, or banking information before your first day. If you're ever unsure about a communication, don't click any links—visit anthropic.com/careers directly for confirmed position openings. How we're different We believe that the highest-impact AI research will be big science. At Anthropic we work as a single cohesive team on just a few large-scale research efforts. And we value impact — advancing our long-term goals of steerable, trustworthy AI — rather than work on smaller and more specific puzzles. We view AI research as an empirical science, which has as much in common with physics and biology as with traditional efforts in computer science. We're an extremely collaborative group, and we host frequent research discussions to ensure that we are pursuing the highest-impact work at any given time. As such, we greatly value communication skills. The easiest way to understand our research directions is to read our recent research. This research continues many of the directions our team worked on prior to Anthropic, including: GPT-3, Circuit-Based Interpretability, Multimodal Neurons, Scaling Laws, AI & Compute, Concrete Problems in AI Safety, and Learning from Human Preferences. Come work with us! Anthropic is a public benefit corporation headquartered in San Francisco. We offer competitive compensation and benefits, optional equity donation matching, generous vacation and parental leave, flexible working hours, and a lovely office space in which to collaborate with colleagues. Our team of 1,500+ includes hundreds of engineers with deep expertise across hardware, software and AI R&D. The Product In a rapidly evolving world, trust in AI depends on AI agents being grounded in fresh, verified real-world data. Search is the foundation that makes this possible. We are building an agent-native search platform designed specifically for AI systems rather than human users. Our product provides programmatic, low-latency, and observable search APIs that AI agents use to retrieve, filter, and reason over real-world information at scale. The Role We are looking for a Senior Software Engineer to work on the rendering infrastructure of a novel search engine tailored for agentic AI consumption. In this role, you will focus on loading modern web pages in a browser that we patch and build ourselves, so that content is rendered completely and reliably at a cost that works across billions of pages. You will work inside Chromium to remove what we do not need, make the rest faster and cheaper, and keep our build current as Chromium moves. Your work ensures that high-quality content is consistently available to the indexing and retrieval systems downstream. In this position, your responsibility will be to Change Chromium in its heavy core (Blink, the V8 integration, the compositor, the network service) to cut CPU, memory and startup cost per page Strip Chromium down for agent workloads: skip what nobody needs, such as image and media decoding, web font downloads, and rasterization and GPU work where no one needs pixels, while keeping what page scripts depend on to run correctly (style, layout, animation frames, observers), and work out what breaks, or renders differently, when you do Keep the browser compatible with the web: make sure that what we remove does not change how the sites we load behave or render Profile and tune fleets of browsers: the process model, memory per renderer, startup, isolation and crash handling Build the production system around it: how browsers are launched, pooled, recycled and monitored You may be a good fit if you Have 5+ years of experience building production systems, and are an expert in several of the following areas. Inside the browser Strong C++ in a large, performance-critical codebase, ideally Chromium, Blink or V8, or a comparable browser engine (Rust is a plus) Chromium architecture: the process model, Mojo IPC, the rendering pipeline (DOM, style, layout, paint, compositing), and the network service Building, debugging and shipping custom Chromium builds: the build system, tracing, crash analysis, and maintaining patches across releases Performance and systems Profiling CPU, memory and I/O for browser fleets, with tools such as perf, tracing and flame graphs Linux process isolation and resource management, concurrency, and memory management Have run browsers in production, or built the infrastructure that does, and can describe where the time and memory went Strong candidates may also have experience with Contributions to Chromium, Blink, V8, Firefox, WebKit or another browser engine Building or maintaining a patched browser that you wrote the patches for Browser instrumentation, including the Chrome DevTools Protocol Working familiarity with how modern frontend frameworks render (SSR, CSR, streaming, hydration) Distributed systems, Kubernetes, and Go or Python The kind of problems you will work on Cut the cost of loading a page in half. Where do CPU and memory go, and what would you change in the browser? Turn off the GPU and image decoding for agent workloads. What breaks, and what changes in how pages load and render? A page runs a script that never yields. How do we detect and stop it without help from the page? Chromium ships a new version. How do we bring a large set of patches forward in days, not weeks? Decide when a page is finished, for pages with analytics beacons, long polling and endless scrolling. We conduct coding interviews as part of the process. Benefits & Perks: Competitive compensation Career growth and learning opportunities Flexibility and ownership Collaborative and innovative culture Opportunity to work on impactful AI projects International environment and talented teams What's it like to work at Nebius: Fast moving - Bold thinking - Constant growth - Meaningful impact - Trust and real ownership - Opportunity to shape the future of AI Equal Opportunity Statement: Nebius is an equal opportunity employer. Contribute to product strategy as a senior voice on a small, high-impact team, challenging assumptions and bringing independent judgment to key decisions. Lead product experiments and rapid iteration cycles, moving from hypothesis to prototype to production with clear success criteria. We expect you to have: 5+ years of product management experience, with a meaningful portion in developer tools, API platforms, or search and retrieval infrastructure. Track record of shipping products in fast-moving markets, working closely with engineering and design from concept through launch and iteration. Strong understanding of LLMs, AI agents, and how search and retrieval systems fit into agentic workflows. Hands-on technical background is a strong plus. Degree in computer science, engineering, or a related field, with the ability to engage deeply with technical architecture and tradeoffs. Comfortable operating in ambiguity: you can context-switch between strategic thinking and tactical execution without losing the thread. Proven ability to influence cross-functional stakeholders and drive alignment without formal authority. Excellent written and verbal communication: you can explain technical concepts clearly to both engineers and business stakeholders. It will be an added bonus if you have: Experience in search, information retrieval, NLP, or adjacent domains. Background in API-first or developer-platform businesses with both PLG and enterprise motions. Leadership experience in a high-growth technology company, especially post-acquisition or startup-within-a-larger-org environments. People management or mentoring experience (building the skills of other PMs).
