About the role
As an Intermediate Backend Engineer, you will take backend features and improvements from clarifying the problem through shipping them and following up in production. You will work within a product area, partnering with Product Management, Frontend, Infrastructure, and Security to deliver predictably and contribute to the quality, security, performance, and maintainability of shared backend code and services. You will be trusted to work with minimal guidance, to know when to seek help, and to communicate clearly in a remote, asynchronous environment — with other tenured engineers alongside you to review your work, think through hard problems with you, and help you grow.
Why you’ll love this role
Ownership:
You'll take features from requirements through delivery and follow-up; your code will run on a platform used by millions of users.
Learning and Growth :
You’ll work alongside your engineering team, who treat code review and design review as a learning loop rather than a gate — one of the fastest ways to grow your engineering judgment.
Innovative Culture:
You’ll use AI as a genuine part of daily engineering work, developing the judgment to know when to trust it and when not to.
Autonomy:
You’ll thrive in our remote-first, asynchronous organization, where clear written communication and self-direction are the pillars of success.
User-Centric Collaboration:
You’ll partner closely with PMs and designers to shape requirements, so you understand why you’re building something, not just what.
What you’ll do
Own and Ship Features:
Design, implement, test, and ship backend features and improvements with minimal guidance, working in Ruby/Rails, Go, or any other modern languages.
Build for Production:
Write maintainable, secure, observable, and performant code. Design and maintain APIs, background jobs, integrations, and bounded service functionality, and work with data models, migrations, indexes, and query behavior.
Test and Review:
Add and improve automated coverage — unit, integration, contract, and end-to-end where appropriate — and review others’ code for correctness, maintainability, security, performance, and operational risk.
Operate What You Build:
Investigate build, test, deployment, and runtime failures at the feature boundary, identify technical debt and propose practical improvements, and take part in on-call or operational support where your team’s ownership model requires it.
Leverage AI:
Use AI productively in daily work, validate what it produces, and understand where its limitations matter.
What you’ll bring
Backend Fundamentals:
Professional experience building and shipping production backend applications, with strong programming, API, database, testing, debugging, and performance fundamentals.
Adaptability:
Experience with Ruby/Rails, Go, or any other modern backend language. We value the ability to learn and adapt over mastery of a single language.
Feature Ownership:
The ability to take a feature from clarification through delivery and follow-up, working independently while seeking input at the right time.
Practical Judgment:
Sound instincts about security, reliability, performance, maintainability, and operational risk, plus an understanding of modular backend boundaries and the consequences of coupling.
Clear Communication:
Strong written communication and effective collaboration in a remote, asynchronous environment.
AI Fluency:
Practical experience with AI coding tools, including the ability to review and correct what they generate.
Helpful experience
Production Go services, APIs, concurrency, profiling, or gRPC.
Docker, Kubernetes, Helm, CI/CD, or cloud deployment.
Rust, particularly for systems, security, performance, or platform work.
PostgreSQL, schema evolution, caching, queues, messaging, or event-driven workflows.
Observability using metrics, logs, traces, dashboards, and alerts.
Contributing to a modular monolith, bounded context, shared component, or independently operated service.

About the role
We're looking for a Backend Engineer to join our Repository Services team in GitLab's Create stage. The team owns the repository side of Source Code: how code gets into a repository, who may change it, and how those changes are verified. We build this as an access layer on the primitives the Gitaly team provides, for GitLab's own features and for the artificial intelligence agents now writing and pushing code alongside people.
You'll work in one of GitLab's oldest and most complex product areas, using Ruby and GraphQL across
GitLab.com
, self-managed instances, and GitLab Dedicated. Repository Services is a new team, and its first months are about reliability and support, so you'll spend real time on performance and structured query language tuning, caching, rate limiting, testing, observability, and resiliency, with experienced team members to lean on. You'll collaborate with product management, product design, testing, security, user experience research, technical writing, Gitaly, Code Review, and the other Source Code teams.
What you'll do
Develop secure, well-tested, performant features and improvements using Ruby and GraphQL.
Work through complex requirements and legacy constraints to deliver clear solutions while protecting the reliability of this critical system.
Design and maintain backend services, application programming interfaces, data models, and business logic that control how code reaches a repository, who may change it, and how it is verified.
Build on the primitives Gitaly provides and work closely with the Gitaly team.
Triage and fix bugs and support requests for the features the team owns.
Collaborate across functions and teams, both asynchronously and synchronously, and involve domain experts when their input will improve the outcome.
Use artificial intelligence agents for well-scoped work when they can speed up delivery without sacrificing quality, and critically review their output.
Write maintainable code that follows GitLab's standards and contribute to constructive code reviews.
Help strengthen reliability by monitoring production health metrics, participating in Tier 2 on-call, troubleshooting incidents, contributing to root cause analysis, and improving observability and resiliency.
Share knowledge through code review, technical documentation, and everyday collaboration while learning from others.
What you'll bring
Professional experience building backend web applications, services, or application programming interfaces, with experience using Ruby and GraphQL.
An understanding of relational databases, structured query language, data modeling, caching, background processing, and backend performance practices.
Experience contributing to user-facing workflows and maintaining their underlying systems.
Experience writing backend unit and integration tests, with familiarity with the testing pyramid, Git, and collaborative code review processes.
Experience using artificial intelligence coding agents and reviewing their output, or an interest in building these skills in a complex monorepo.
Clear written and spoken English communication skills, including sharing useful status updates in a remote, asynchronous environment.
The ability to manage assigned priorities, work through ambiguity, take ownership of your work, and seek guidance when needed.
About the team
Repository Services is a small backend team in the Create stage, formed in September 2026 when Source Code split into focused teams. As the split is finalized we expect to own repository mirroring, Git Large File Storage (LFS), protected branches and Branch Rules, push rules, Code Owners (shared with Code Review), and commit and tag signing. We build on Gitaly's primitives and meet regularly with the Gitaly team, and our work serves

We foster an environment of mutual trust and respect, empowering effective debate to achieve the best outcomes for our customers and team.
We especially encourage members of underrepresented groups in the tech community to apply and understand that not all successful candidates will meet each requirement listed.
Our interview process is unique to each role, and we value the candidate experience just as much as our customer experience. We hope your conversations with us reflect a thoughtful process that is illuminative, enjoyable, and respectful of your time.
ABOUT THE ROLE
More than 7 million developers use Render, and most of them found us through other developers. We're building a team to further drive this developer led growth. As our first Developer Programs Lead, you'll own Render's social presence, developer community, developer programs, and developer voice.
You'll set the strategy across all four areas, decide where to hire, where to use agencies or creators, and in what order.
You'll report to Raph Terrier, Head of Developer Experience. The DX team owns content: tutorials, videos, docs, and articles. Your team owns how Render sounds, how that content reaches developers, and the programs and community around it. You'll also work closely with our VP of Marketing, product marketing, and product.
WHAT YOU'LL DO
- Build and lead the team
- Set the strategy and goals for social, community, developer programs, and developer brand.
- Decide what to build first, what to hand to agencies or contractors, and when to hire. Then hire and manage the team.
- Report on what's working to Developer Experience and Marketing leadership, and change course when something isn't.
Own Social
- Run Render's accounts on X, LinkedIn, and Reddit yourself at first. Write the posts, reply to developers, and join the conversations where Render has something useful to say.
- Set the channel strategy: where we show up, how often, and what we measure.
- Handle the hard moments in public, including outages, pricing changes, and sharp criticism, with the right people inside Render.
Grow our Developer Community
- Build Render's presence in Discord, Reddit, and the other places developers gather, with the DX team.
- Run AMAs, livestreams, and community events with DX.
- Bring what you hear from developers back to Product and Engineering.
Run developer programs
- Build programs that grow Render's reach through other people: developer creators, ambassadors, referrals, speaking, and employee advocacy.
Own the developer voice
- Define Render's voice and style for developers, and write it down so engineers, product managers, and marketers sound like Render when they write or post.
- Work with the VP of Marketing and product marketing on Render's external narrative and how each launch shows up in public.
WHAT WE'RE LOOKING FOR
- 7+ years across social, community, developer marketing, or brand, including time building or leading a function at a growing company.
- Experience hiring and leading a team, or building a function from early stage with a clear plan for who to add and when.
- Recent hands-on ownership of a company's social channels. You can show us accounts you ran and copy you wrote.
- Experience building a developer community or program, with results you can explain.
- Experience shaping a brand voice, and examples of how it changed the way a company sounded.
- Fluency with developer audiences and enough technical comfort to write accurately about infrastructure, with the judgment to check with an engineer first.
- You work without a playbook and with little direction across Marketing, Product, and Engineering.
- Steady judgment when something goes wrong in public.
NICE-TO-HAVES
- Experience at a developer tools, cloud, or infrastructure company.
- You've run a creator, influencer, or ambassador program.
- An active personal presence on X, LinkedIn, YouTube, or another platform developers use.
- Comfort on camera or behind a mic.
If this role excites you but you don’t meet every single requirement, we’d still love to hear from you—your unique experience might be just what we need.
BENEFITS
- 4 weeks of paid vacation.
- 14 weeks of fully paid parental leave for all parents to bond with a newly born, adopted, or fostered child. We will also work with you to create a supportive plan of return.
- Long-term disability, life insurance, and 401K plans.
- 100% employer-paid medical coverage and 99% employer-paid dental and vision coverage for you and a dependent. FSAs and HSAs are available as well.
- Monthly lifestyle stipend for wellness, mental health and therapy, hobbies, etc.
- Monthly cell phone and internet subsidy.
- Commuter benefits for Renders in the Bay Area, and home office stipends for remote Renders.
- Continuous learning benefits & related support.

ABOUT THE JOB
We are looking for an experienced EEE Parts Engineer to join us on a contract basis, owning parts engineering across one or more hardware programs for the duration of the engagement. In this role, you will work with Electrical Engineers to select and qualify parts for new designs, with Quality Engineers to define screening, inspection, and test requirements, and with Supply Chain to select and monitor part suppliers. You will build and maintain parts lists and screening plans, review contractual and customer requirements for parts impacts, shepherd nonstandard parts through internal and customer approval processes, and support root-cause investigations when parts fail during test. This role requires both deep technical knowledge of EEE parts and the collaboration skills to work effectively across engineering, quality, and program disciplines.
This is a contract position with a defined period of performance. Contract duration and any extension options will be discussed during the hiring process.
WHAT YOU'LL DO
•
Parts Selection & Screening Plans:
Develop and maintain the program's parts selection and screening plan, defining acceptable part classes, screening levels, and qualification requirements for EEE parts used in the design.
•
Parts List & Baseline Management:
Build and maintain a master parts list (preferred/approved parts list) tracking manufacturer, part number, screening level, qualification status, and approved alternates for every part used, including obsolescence and lifecycle tracking.
•
Requirements Flow-down:
Review statements of work, specifications, and contractual documents to identify EEE parts requirements, and flow those requirements down to design teams and suppliers alongside viable alternative part solutions.
•
Supply Source Selection:
Support evaluation of component manufacturers and distributors for quality, reliability, and supply-chain integrity, including authorized distribution and anti-counterfeiting controls.
•
Nonstandard Part Approval:
Prepare and submit nonstandard part approval data packages (qualification data, manufacturer reliability data, process-change evaluations), and present/defend them to an internal or customer parts control board.
•
Part Qualification & Test Data Review:
Review incoming part test data and qualification reports against program requirements, including oversight of Destructive Physical Analysis (DPA) lot-sample teardowns and Prohibited/Restricted Materials Analysis (PMA) dispositions.
•
Failure Analysis & Corrective Action:
Support investigation of EEE parts that fail incoming screening, board-level test, or system-level test; interface with failure analysis labs to determine root cause and drive corrective action.
•
Obsolescence & Advisory Monitoring:
Monitor industry alert/advisory systems (e.g., GIDEP) for notices affecting parts used on the program, and assess and disposition the impact on existing designs, inventory, and in-process procurements.
•
Cost & Schedule Support:
Estimate and track the cost and schedule impact of parts screening, qualification, and procurement activities, and support proposal efforts with EEE parts cost, risk, and schedule inputs.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
•
Education:
Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or a related technical field, with approximately 5 years of applicable industry experience (or a Master's degree with approximately 3 years).
•
EEE Parts Knowledge:
Strong working knowledge of EEE parts, including hermetic devices and plastic encapsulated devices, and the industry standards and military specifications that govern them.
•
Screening & Qualification Standards:
Familiarity with MIL-STD-883 and MIL-STD-750 (test methods) and MIL-PRF-38534/-38535/-19500 (hybrid, integrated circuit, and semiconductor device specifications).
•
DPA & Failure Analysis:
Experience with or working knowledge of Destructive Physical Analysis (MIL-STD-1580) and interfacing with part failure analysis labs to support root-cause investigations.
•
Communication:
Ability to produce clear, concise written and verbal technical reports for engineering teams, management, and customers.
•
Cross-Functional Collaboration:
Demonstrated ability to work effectively across Electrical Engineering, Quality Engineering, Supply Chain, and Program Management.
•
Availability:
Ability to begin the contract engagement promptly and commit to the expected period of performance.
•
Export Control:
U.S. Person status is typically required for roles accessing export-controlled data; eligibility to obtain and maintain a security clearance may also be required depending on program.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
• Familiarity with MIL-PRF-55681, MIL-PRF-55342, and MIL-PRF-55310 (chip capacitor and resistor specifications).
• Experience monitoring and dispositioning GIDEP (Government-Industry Data Exchange Program) alerts and advisories.
• Experience performing or reviewing Prohibited/Restricted Materials Analysis (PMA), including tin-whisker and wire-bond material risk assessment.
• Experience supporting part qualification for space, launch vehicle, or other harsh-environment defense programs.
• Experience preparing data packages for, or presenting to, an internal or customer parts control board.
• Experience supporting Material Review Board (MRB) disposition of nonconforming parts and materials.
