ABOUT US:
AI NEEDS A NEW INFRASTRUCTURE LAYER. WE'RE BUILDING IT AT MODAL.
Every era of computing brought new workloads that previous infrastructure couldn't support: mainframes, databases, and the cloud. Each time, the company that rebuilt the layer underneath defined the decade. AI is no different, except it touches everything instead of one slice, and the window to build the layer underneath it is open right now.
Our customers include category-defining companies like Ramp https://modal.com/blog/how-ramp-built-a-full-context-background-coding-agent-on-modal, Cognition, DoorDash, and Suno. They rely on Modal for instant GPU access, sub-second container starts, and native storage, so it's simple to serve low-latency inference, fine-tune models, and access production-ready sandboxes at scale.
We've passed $1B in annualized run rate, up 15x from a year ago. In October 2026 we raised a $750M Series D led by Accel at a $15.75B valuation.
Our team includes creators of popular open-source projects (e.g.,Seaborn https://github.com/mwaskom/seaborn,Luigi https://github.com/spotify/luigi), academic researchers, international olympiad medalists, and experienced engineering and product leaders with decades of experience.

- Comfort working across the stack: TypeScript on the frontend, Python services on the backend, and ClickHouse for data and analytics.
- Deep knowledge of observability tools and patterns used for large-scale workloads such as custom sandboxes, training and inference for large language (LLM) and diffusion models.
- Experience with at least one of: billing/payments systems, B2B SaaS tooling, or enterprise software, or LLM / diffusion models inference and training loads.
- Strong product instincts; you think about customer problems, not just tickets.
- Ability to participate in on-call rotation and respond to production incidents.
- Ability to make good tradeoffs between shipping fast and building for scale.
- Ability to work in-person in our NYC or SF office.

ABOUT BASETEN
Baseten powers mission-critical inference for the world's most dynamic AI companies, like Cursor, Notion, OpenEvidence, Abridge, Clay, Gamma, and Writer. By uniting applied AI research, flexible infrastructure, and seamless developer tooling, we enable companies operating at the frontier of AI to bring cutting-edge models into production. We're growing quickly and recently raised our $1.5B Series F https://www.baseten.co/blog/announcing-our-series-f/, led by Altimeter Capital, Conviction Partners, and Spark Capital. Join us and help build the platform engineers turn to ship AI products.
THE ROLE
We are looking for Software Engineers to join our team. This is a specialized, high-impact role sitting at the intersection of high-performance computing (HPC) and Large Language Model (LLM) engineering. You will not just be building the automated "speedometer and diagnostic" suite for our next-generation AI infrastructure; you will be defining the roadmap, driving key technical decisions, and taking full ownership of the future of this work.
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Benchmarking: Evaluate, run and automate standard LLM quality benchmarks (GSM8K, MMLU) alongside custom performance suites for specific workloads (e.g., long-context window, KV cache reuse, disaggregated serving).
- DevEx Improvement: Develop and maintain internal GPU-enabled development environments (similar to GitHub Codespaces). You will ensure the team has seamless, high-performance "dev machines" optimized for model experimentation.
- Tool Development: Build and contribute to open-source tools such as InferenceMAX and genai-bench to automate model evaluation, benchmarking and analysis.
- System Profiling: Use profilers like PyTorch Profiler, NVIDIA Nsight Systems and py-spy to collect performance profiles, identify bottlenecks, and debug the compute/networking stack.
- Monitoring & Observability: Develop real-time dashboards and alerts to monitor system health, model startup times, and runtime performance.
- Continuous Integration: Automate performance testing via CI/CD pipelines to catch regressions and build release workflow automation for the model runtimes stack.
- Optimization Automation: Build tools to find the "Pareto frontier"—identifying the absolute best configuration (latency vs. cost vs. quality) for a given model and workload.
REQUIREMENTS
This is a mid-senior, high leverage role. We care about your technical depth, strong communication skills to drive cross-team efforts, ability to navigate vague requirements and mentor other engineers. We want to talk to you if you have:
- A Love for Systems & Hardware: You aren’t just interested in the AI; you want to understand GPU memory subsystems, InfiniBand, and how data moves across a cluster.
- An Automation Mindset: You believe that if a task has to be done twice, it should be scripted. You have a passion for stress-testing and fuzzy testing to find the "breaking point" of a system.
- Mathematical Curiosity: A desire to understand the underlying math of Transformers and how it translates into FLOPs and memory requirements.
- Technical Toolkit: Familiarity with Python, and an eagerness to master the NVIDIA software stack. C++ familiarity is good to have.
WHY THIS ROLE
- Direct Impact: Your tools will be the gatekeeper for what defines "good" performance for our customers.
- Deep Learning (Literally): You will gain world-class expertise in GPU orchestration and LLM inference that few engineers in the industry possess.
- High Ownership: As the lead of a small team, you will have the autonomy to build tools from scratch and contribute to open-source projects.
BENEFITS
- Competitive compensation, including meaningful equity
- (U.S. only) 100% coverage of medical, dental, and vision insurance for employee and dependents
- Flexible PTO policy including company wide Winter Break (our offices are closed from Christmas Eve to New Year's Day!)
- Paid parental leave
- Fertility and family-building stipend through Carrot
- (U.S. only) Company-facilitated 401(k)
- Exposure to a variety of ML startups, offering unparalleled learning and networking opportunities.
Apply now to embark on a rewarding journey in shaping the future of AI! If you are a motivated individual with a passion for machine learning and a desire to be part of a collaborative and forward-thinking team, we would love to hear from you.
At Baseten, we are committed to fostering a diverse and inclusive workplace. We are looking for enterprise sales people based in LATAM and fluent in Spanish. Colombia is currently the highest priority.
We deliver better open source from the data center to cloud and edge. Our Linux distribution Ubuntu is now the leading platform for public cloud compute, and the favorite platform for software engineers, data scientists and AI developers. Our mission is to accelerate the adoption and quality of open source globally, and our goal is to ship the most software on the planet by cores. A tidal wave of open source innovation is the next phase of the entire enterprise software industry, and we aim to be the most compelling way to ride that wave.
Our customers include Global 500 enterprises and startups. We are expanding our product range from the base operating system - Ubuntu - to full enterprise solutions in infrastructure and applications. We can deliver software defined storage, private cloud solutions, container runtime environments, as well as databases, message queues, identity, observability, analytics, machine learning and web publishing capabilities. Customers love the idea that they can get security compliance and support for everything open source from a single company. Our goal is to have more solutions on tap than any other vendor, and we have built unique capabilities to make that possible across every cloud, every class of compute and every category of application.
Canonical provides licensed enterprise software products, commercial support, managed services, consulting and training services to customers who are deploying Ubuntu or open source applications on the cloud, in their data center, or to the connected device and IoT ecosystem. We are just over 1,000 colleagues in 70+ countries and $250m in revenue, profitable, on a steady but relentless growth trajectory. We are almost entirely distributed, with leadership spread across many countries. We believe that talent is equally distributed across the globe, and we are excited to hire, develop, promote and ultimately trust a diverse group of exceptional leads to build the best, not biggest, enterprise software company.
We hire carefully and deliberately; our selection process is long and requires substantial work from applicants. It will take successful applicants three to six months to secure an offer. This is not a place to apply if you are in a rush to find a position, it is a worthwhile place to apply if you are ambitious and long-term in your thinking about your career and the dynamics which move the world forward. If you see clearly the rise of open source, and you understand the drivers of enterprise procurement and technical decision making, then you will understand why Canonical has such a tremendous long term advantage. You will also understand, given the ferocity of competition and the challenges of competing in a market of giants, that we have to set a very high bar for hiring and performance. In order to be a world leading company we select for exceptional ability as well as character, and then provide an environment which promotes teamwork and celebrates diligence, collaboration and effectiveness. All of those are easy to say but hard to do - at Canonical we are willing to be uncomfortable in pursuit of that excellence.
In building our sales team, we look for five things:
Empathy for the customer - a real understanding of customer needs, industry-specific challenges, and a desire to help customers solve their business problems
High intellect - the ability to learn quickly, understand very complex subjects, and communicate clearly to build trust and confidence
Passion for technology - a fascination with the state of the art from brilliant people solving hard problems, and fierce competition for large prizes
Teamwork - a willingness to help others, to collaborate well with people from different disciplines, and to balance personal and team ambitions
Energy - the drive to motivate oneself and others to achieve the best result for the team and our customers
Ubuntu is already very widely adopted which gives us a credible basis for conversations in the market. Nevertheless, it requires real work for sales professionals to build on that adoption to create trusted and profitable commercial relationships with the enterprises in their territory. Our product managers and marketing teams run campaigns to generate awareness, engagement and leads, but you will need to go beyond managing inbound interest to develop the potential of your territory. You will need judgement as to which industries and companies are ready to go deeper with open source and Canonical, and energy to develop relationships in advance of proven interest. We expect professional practice, territory and account planning, as well as clear, complete and continuous reporting on pipeline status and activity, using standard professional tools.
The successful candidate will carry an annual bookings quota within their assigned territory. They should be able to travel regionally for client engagement, industry conferences, and internationally for company events twice a year. They will be expected to demonstrate professionalism and effectiveness, to prospect accounts for new business, maintain and develop existing relationships, and work with colleagues and partners on account strategy. They must be comfortable selling enterprise software, open source, cloud, virtualization, container technologies and technical software solutions to senior levels of the enterprise.
Location: We are expanding our sales organisation globally and have open roles in every region.
What your day will look like
Represent the company, its solutions and software, in your territory
Build and execute a territory plan to prioritize outreach and prospecting
Develop new pipeline through outreach, prospecting, local marketing, and industry events
Close contracts to meet and exceed quarterly and annual bookings targets
Be mindful and proactive in achieving tactical and strategic objectives
Manage customer relationships and interactions through all stages of the sales cycle
Work with field engineers to propose solutions that solve our customers’ business problems
Work with customer success to identify growth opportunities
Maintain accurate pipeline data and forecasts within Salesforce
Establish productive professional relationships with key influencers and decision makers
What we are looking for in you
Bachelor's level degree, preferably in engineering or computer science
Experience of open source technology and solutions
Detail oriented with effective follow-up
Experience in enterprise software or technology sales planning and execution
Track record of achievement in sales targets and new account wins
Self-discipline and motivation to be successful in a distributed team
Professional written and spoken English, as well as any language that may be appropriate for your target market
Ability to travel for customer engagements, industry events and company events
Additional skills of interest
Specific vertical experience, in particular finance, telco, health, energy, public sector, tech
Experience speaking at conferences or industry events

We are looking for Telecom account executives with particular interest in these markets:
Middle East, DACH region, Nordics, Eastern Europe, USA.
For these roles, it is also preferable to be fluent in the local language.
Open source software is the new default in the enterprise, and Canonical is the new challenger to major enterprise software vendors.
What we offer you

This is an opportunity to run a field engineering team, helping customers understand and implement Canonical's open source solutions in public clouds and in their own data centers. We work across the entire spectrum of cloud offerings, from Ubuntu itself to virtualisation and private cloud, Kubernetes, and the implementation of sophisticated open source solutions such as MLops platforms, data platforms and more. We are rapidly expanding the range of open source solutions we offer and deliver to customers, as we move into new industries like telco, finance, health care and media we design and develop new open source solutions to meet their needs.
We believe that Engineering Managers should be outstanding engineers themselves. They should feel completely at home troubleshooting technical issues and having technical presales conversations with customers. They should contribute to project delivery themselves, but know that the technical contributions they bring are far less significant than their ability to shape the whole team’s direction, focus and delivery. We grow management skills and train engineers, who are interested in soft skills, to be managers.
We believe that open source is just starting to transform the tech sector and enterprise compute. Our goal is to make open source easier, more reliable and more secure for deployment and development. We strive to be the provider of ‘most software to most companies’. To deliver on that ambition, our engineers are carefully selected from the applicants across the globe. Managers and team members also take part in presales conversations to provide technical advice during the sales process.
A Cloud Field Engineering Manager is responsible for line management and career guidance. The ability to develop engineering talent, to represent your team from a technical perspective, and to drive collaboration with other teams and customers are all critical to success in this role. You are also expected to actively participate in technical presales to help our department achieve our quarterly goals.

Implement disciplined engineering processes
Represent your team and product to stakeholders, partners, and customers
Develop and evangelise great engineering and organisational practices
Plan and manage progress on agreed goals and projects
Be an active part of the leadership team, collaborating with other leaders

Our flagship product, the MCP Gateway, empowers developers to connect, observe, and secure AI agents and tools across the entire lifecycle—from prototype to production. We’re defining how developers safely harness the power of the Model Context Protocol (MCP) in real-world environments.
We’re looking for a Principal Backend Engineer who thrives at the intersection of AI, security, and developer experience. You’ll lead the technical direction of the Gateway and related services, collaborating closely with Product, Design, and Security to deliver elegant frameworks and APIs that developers love to use. This is a high-velocity, high-ownership environment: you’ll ship fast, iterate constantly, and help shape the future of secure agent-based development.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Define the technical solution for a new product
- Help shape the product with peers in Product and Design
- Mentor other technical team members
- Be the technical point of contact for the team
- This role may require participation in an on-call rotation to provide support outside of standard business hours, including evenings, weekends, and holidays, as needed.
QUALIFICATIONS:
REQUIRED:
- 10+ years of backend engineering experience, including extensive work on production-grade, distributed systems at scale.
- Technical leadership across multiple teams or domains, with a proven ability to drive architectural vision, set technical direction, and influence long-term product strategy.
- Exceptional product and platform mindset—you think beyond implementation details to how technology shapes developer and business outcomes.
- Expertise in designing and evolving large-scale, cloud-native systems, with deep knowledge of distributed computing, service-oriented architecture, and performance optimization.
- Demonstrated experience building secure, resilient, and high-throughput backend services, with a strong grasp of reliability engineering principles (SLOs, observability, incident response).
- Fluency in Go (preferred) or another modern systems language (Rust, Java, C++, etc.), with the ability to lead technical design reviews and mentor others in language-specific best practices.
- Strong grasp of software engineering fundamentals—CI/CD, testing strategy, source control, and deployment automation—applied in complex, multi-service environments.
- Proven track record of technical mentorship and cross-functional collaboration, enabling teams to deliver high-impact, high-quality software efficiently.
- Deep experience with major cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, GCP) and infrastructure-as-code tooling.
- Ownership mentality with a bias for action and iterative delivery, balancing short-term impact with long-term architectural health.
- Excellent communication skills, with the ability to clearly articulate complex technical concepts to both technical and non-technical audiences.
- Comfortable operating autonomously in distributed, remote-first teams, and leading through influence rather than authority.
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
BONUS:
- Experience with Kubernetes, Docker, and microservices architecture
- Prior experience with OpenAI, Anthropic, or similar LLM APIs, and the MCP specification
WHAT TO EXPECT
FIRST 30 DAYS:
- Meet team members
- Build context about the problem space and prior art
- Provide feedback on current exploration and propose next steps in line with Product and Design
FIRST 90 DAYS:
- Work with Product and Design on defining the product
- Attend customer calls
- Meet people across the company
- Help grow the team by participating in hiring loops
ONE YEAR OUTLOOK (FIRST YEAR):
- Bring the product to market
