You may not meet every requirement, and that’s okay. If this role excites you, we’d love you to raise your hand for what could be a truly career-defining opportunity.
Staff Backend Engineer - Adaptive Telemetry, Databases
This is a remote position. We are looking for candidates in the Canadian time zones.
What is Grafana Cloud?
Grafana Cloud is our composable observability platform that integrates metrics, logs, traces, and profiles with Grafana. It allows our customers to leverage the best open source observability software – including Prometheus, Mimir, Loki, Tempo, and Pyroscope – without the overhead of installing, maintaining and scaling their own observability stack.
The Databases department owns and operates the telemetry databases that are
Mimir for metrics
,
Loki for logs
,
Tempo for traces
, and
Pyroscope for profiles
. We offer our databases as a Cloud service supporting Grafana Cloud.
Adaptive Telemetry Group
The Adaptive Telemetry group, part of the Databases department, has the mission of ensuring that all telemetry stored in our databases is worthy of attention. Under that mission, the group is responsible for the development of
Adaptive Metrics
,
Adaptive Logs
,
Adaptive Traces
and Adaptive Profiles.
Our Adaptive Telemetry solutions give users the ability to control and optimize their telemetry data. These solutions ensure that data storage is optimized based on individual usage patterns, so only the most valuable data is retained.
As a company we are remote-first and global, we embrace people of different experiences and backgrounds to build diverse teams where every person brings a new perspective to the software.
What will you be doing:
Drive technical strategy and roadmap.
Proactively define the architectural vision, prioritize work that unlocks major product or platform improvements, and influence product and engineering decisions.
Lead end-to-end delivery of large, cross-functional projects.
Own planning, design, execution, rollout and long-term operation of large initiatives.
Own architecture, reliability, performance and cost for critical systems.
Make pragmatic architecture choices that balance scalability, availability, latency and cost while ensuring systems remain maintainable and evolvable.
Define SLOs/SLIs and lead incident response.
Establish measurable reliability targets, run high-severity incident response, lead blameless post-mortems, and drive systemic fixes and automation to prevent recurrence.
Improve observability, automation and operational readiness.
Champion telemetry, alerting, runbooks, capacity planning and automation efforts that reduce toil, speed debugging and lower MTTR.
Align stakeholders and remove blockers.
Coordinate across Product, Design and other teams to align priorities, negotiate tradeoffs, and unblock delivery for large initiatives.
Mentor and grow engineering talent.
Coach senior and mid-level engineers, lead design reviews, raise engineering standards, and help teammates make sound technical tradeoffs.
Represent engineering internally and externally.
Communicate technical strategy clearly to non-engineering stakeholders and represent the team in cross-team planning.
We invest heavily in developer productivity. You can use modern AI coding assistants as part of your daily workflow (your choice of tools, within security guidelines), backed by a company-funded usage budget so you can iterate quickly without unnecessary friction. We encourage pragmatic AI-assisted development: faster prototyping, test generation, refactors, documentation, and incident follow-ups—always with strong code review and quality standards. You'll also have access to the latest frontier models from OpenAI, Anthropic, and Google.
What makes you a great fit:
You are a motivated self starter with a bias towards action. You are customer focused. We build everything with our users in mind. You have a passion for creating intuitive products that fit customers’ needs
Proven delivery of large distributed systems.
Experience shipping and operating complex systems that span multiple teams, with clear evidence of technical leadership and impact.
Strong systems-design instincts.
Deep understanding of tradeoffs around latency, consistency, availability, scaling and cost.
Hands-on cloud and platform experience.
Solid experience with cloud-native architectures (microservices, containers/Kubernetes, IaC) and the operational practices that keep them healthy.
Reliability and performance ownership.
Comfortable defining SLOs/SLIs, doing capacity planning, tuning performance, and driving reliability work end-to-end.
Excellent coding and design skills.
You write clear, maintainable, well-tested code and can lead technical designs — we use Go, but Python/C/C++/Rust or similar translate well.
Comfort with AI-assisted development.
We embrace AI and agentic development so we expect you to be curious and comfortable using AI-powered developer tools and ideally have practical experience folding them into a team’s workflow.
Experience with messaging and telemetry.
Familiarity with streaming/messaging systems (e.g., Kafka) and observability tooling (Prometheus/Grafana or equivalents).
Influence without authority.
Ability to align cross-functional stakeholders, set priorities and drive outcomes in a remote-first environment.
Strong communicator.
Clear written and verbal communication that works across engineers and non-technical stakeholders.

At Render, we’re building the modern cloud platform for developers creating AI-native, full-stack, multi-service applications. Our mission is to eliminate the tradeoff between the power of hyperscalers and the simplicity of developer-friendly platforms—so teams can ship fast, scale reliably, and focus on their product, not infrastructure.
Unlike complex hyperscalers or ephemeral edge/serverless solutions, Render offers a developer-first experience with persistent compute, dynamic autoscaling, built-in orchestration, and observability, allowing teams to launch, scale, and manage real-world applications without writing infrastructure code or managing servers. Whether you're building LLM-powered applications, scalable SaaS products, or async processing pipelines, Render empowers teams to move fast and scale confidently from MVP to millions of users.
Our platform is trusted by over 7 million developers worldwide and continues to grow rapidly. In February 2026, we raised an additional $100M in Series C financing, bringing our total funding to $260M, to accelerate our vision of making cloud infrastructure both powerful and intuitive—designed for the speed of modern AI development.
We’re a diverse and talented team that values craft, velocity, and user experience. If you’re excited to help shape the future of the intelligent cloud and empower developers everywhere, we’d love to hear from you.
APPLYING TO RENDER

ABOUT YOU
We're looking for a Staff Engineer to join our Identity & Access Management (IAM) platform team. This is an individual contributor role with outsized technical scope: you'll be the technical anchor for how Xsolla builds secure, high-scale auth infrastructure — setting direction, making hard architectural calls, and raising the bar across the org.
You will own the strategy behind authentication, authorization, and session management at scale, and evolve our OAuth 2.0 / OIDC flows and token lifecycle to meet both product and compliance needs. You operate with significant autonomy, but your decisions ripple across teams — so you'll spend real time building buy-in with engineering and security stakeholders, not just designing in isolation.
You are technically deep, calm under pressure, and comfortable being the escalation point when production IAM issues get hard. You write the RFCs and design docs that people actually read, and you create leverage for the broader engineering org through documentation, tooling, and mentorship — without needing a management title to do it.
HOW WE WORK
Xsolla operates across multiple time zones, and the IAM platform underpins authentication and authorization for every product we ship. Strong written communication is essential — your architectural decisions and designs need to stand on their own and be actionable without you in the room.
We value directness, technical depth, and follow-through. If a design or production issue has real security or reliability implications, we expect you to say so clearly, defend your position with evidence, and stay engaged until it's resolved.
ABOUT US
Xsolla is a global commerce company with robust tools and services to help developers solve the inherent challenges of the video game industry. From indie to AAA, companies partner with Xsolla to help them fund, distribute, market, and monetize their games. Grounded in the belief in the future of video games, Xsolla is resolute in the mission to bring opportunities together, and continually make new resources available to creators. — Own the technical strategy and architecture of our IAM platform, covering authentication, authorization, and session management at scale.
Design Auth Protocols
— Design and evolve our OAuth 2.0 / OIDC flows, token lifecycle, and security primitives to meet both product and compliance requirements.
Drive Cross-Team Technical Decisions
— Drive decisions on protocol design, data modeling, and platform reliability, and build buy-in across engineering and security teams.
De-Risk Proactively
— Identify systemic risks and performance bottlenecks; lead initiatives to resolve them before they become incidents.
Set Engineering Standards
— Define engineering standards, review critical code and designs, and create leverage for the team through documentation, tooling, and mentorship.
Align with Stakeholders
— Collaborate with product, security, and infra teams to align on roadmap and translate business needs into well-scoped technical plans.
Own Production Escalations
— Serve as the go-to escalation point for complex production issues in the IAM domain.

Architectural Influence
— Track record of influencing architecture and standards beyond your immediate team.
Written & Verbal Communication
— You write RFCs and design docs that people actually read.
Nice to Have
Hands-on experience with the Ory ecosystem (Hydra, Kratos, Keto) — operating it in production or building on top of its APIs
Experience with CockroachDB or other distributed SQL databases (multi-region deployments, clock skew handling, survivability trade-offs)
Familiarity with compliance requirements relevant to IAM: SOC 2, ISO 27001, GDPR data minimization, audit logging
Contributions to open-source security or identity projects
Experience building or integrating with SCIM, SAML, or enterprise SSO (LDAP / Active Directory)
Background in platform or infrastructure engineering — building systems other engineers build on top of
Hands-on, up-to-date experience with modern AI tools (e.g. Claude, Copilot, Cursor) for code generation, review, and accelerating day-to-day engineering work
Benefits
We are passionate about fostering a supportive environment for our team, so we prioritize the physical, mental, and emotional well-being of our employees through a comprehensive Benefits Program.
