ABOUT AVOCA
Avoca is transforming how home service companies engage with their customers. Our AI-powered conversational agents handle every high-value inbound call, from booking jobs, qualifying leads, and driving higher revenue, all at a speed and consistency unmatched by human call centers.
We're a Series B startup backed by Kleiner Perkins, Meritech Capital, General Catalyst, and other top-tier investors, with $125M raised and a $1B valuation. We grew 10x in 2025 and have scaled to 170+ employees in under two years across our NYC headquarters and Santa Barbara office.
In a $1T+ market where 85% of missed calls go to competitors, we're building the category-defining platform for AI-driven customer engagement, serving the largest brands in home services. With high-energy, in-office teams in both locations, every hire here has an immediate and visible impact.
ABOUT THE ROLE
As a Sales Development Representative (SDR) at Avoca, you'll fuel our growth engine by identifying, engaging, and qualifying prospective customers across the Australian home services industry. You'll run high-velocity outbound programs, convert interest into meetings for our Account Executives, and help evangelize Avoca's impact by turning missed calls into booked jobs and measurable revenue.
You'll pioneer and build the market. This is a greenfield opportunity: you'll generate Avoca's pipeline in Australia from day one. It's ideal for someone who thrives on speed, experimentation, and impact. You'll own pipeline generation end-to-end: target the right segments, craft compelling outreach, book high-quality meetings, and collaborate closely with Sales, Marketing, and Product to turn customer pain into Avoca wins.
WHAT YOU'LL DO
- Prospect and qualify leads across Australian home services segments, serving as the first point of contact and trusted resource for prospects evaluating Avoca.
- Run high-volume, multi-channel outbound (LinkedIn, email, calls, events) to build pipeline and consistently exceed meeting and SQL targets.
- Tailor outreach to customer goals and business models; articulate Avoca's value in booking jobs, capturing missed demand, and lifting revenue.
- Partner with Account Executives to schedule demos, share context, and ensure smooth handoffs that convert into opportunities and closed-won deals.
- Travel to industry conferences and events to generate leads, book demos on-site, and represent Avoca with professionalism and urgency.
- Conduct discovery to qualify fit, pain, and timing; map stakeholders across Operations, Marketing, and Executive teams.
- Collaborate with Sales, Marketing, and Product to refine messaging, share market feedback, and continuously improve playbooks and cadences.
- Track activity and outcomes with precision; measure and report on KPIs to guide prioritization and iterate quickly.
WHAT YOU'LL BRING
- 1–3 years in an SDR, BDR, or outbound sales role, ideally at a high-growth startup.
- A track record of hitting or exceeding outbound meeting targets, with meetings that actually convert downstream.
- Confidence on the phone and in writing: you can articulate value clearly whether it's a 30-second cold call or a personalized email.
- Comfort with high volume; you can run 50+ touches a day without sacrificing quality.
- CRM discipline: clean data, updated stages, notes that your AEs can actually use.
- Excited to work with a high-ownership team across multiple time zones.
- Nice to have: experience selling AI, SaaS, or into the home services vertical.
- BONUS: Market/domain knowledge and/or an existing trades network.
WHO YOU ARE
- You're competitive with yourself. You track your numbers, know your conversion rates, and are always looking for the next lever to pull.
- You handle rejection well — not because you ignore it, but because you treat it as signal. A "no" teaches you something about messaging, timing, or targeting.
- You prepare before you pick up the phone. You've looked at the prospect's website, understand their business model, and can speak to their specific pain.
- You're a clear communicator who keeps AEs, managers, and cross-functional partners in the loop without being asked.
- You thrive in ambiguity and create structure: you're energized by a blank page, make sound decisions with incomplete information, and build repeatable process where none exists.
- You have a high motor: self-driven, relentless in pursuit of pipeline, and quick to act without waiting to be told.
- You're already embedding AI into your go-to-market in a systematic way, across prospecting, research, outreach and list building, and can show the workflows you've built and the results they drive.
BENEFITS
- Flexible PTO plus AU holidays
- Company-wide off-sites
- Travel to HQ
- Competitive medical, dental, and health insurance
- All core tools and software provided
Compensation: The expected on target earnings for this role is A$150,000–A$175,000, with final compensation based on experience, skills, and qualifications determined during the interview process. Avoca's total compensation package includes base salary, bonus, equity, and a comprehensive suite of benefits and perks. About Backblaze
Backblaze is the object storage leader in the open cloud movement, fueling customer success with cloud storage built purposefully to unlock budgets, unburden administrators, and unleash innovators. Together with our partners, we’re helping customers break free from the restrictive, overpriced legacy solutions that hold them back, and blaze forward with the full power of the open cloud in their hands.
Founded in 2007, we scaled the business with less than $3 million in outside funding until 2021, when we did a traditional IPO on the Nasdaq stock exchange. Today, Backblaze generates over $100m in revenue and is the leading specialized storage cloud - managing over three billion gigabytes of data storage for 500K+ customers in 175+ countries, including businesses, developers, IT professionals, and individuals.
Want to know what you’ll be doing?
You will work on our data infrastructure platform which supports the B2 Object Storage and Computer Backup products, responsible for the data infrastructure that everything runs on. You will help improve automation, observability and stability for durability, increase throughput, and drive architectural changes to support the long term requirements of our service.
Responsibilities:
Design and build automation frameworks that let other engineers provision, configure, and repair fleet infrastructure themselves
Design and extend the observability stack (metrics, logs, traces, alerts) that tells us whether the storage platform is healthy and where it is degrading
Build reporting, dashboards, and visualizations that give engineering and leadership a clear view into fleet health, capacity, and operational trends
Build system health tooling that detects failing hardware, drifting configuration, and capacity risk before they turn into incidents
Lead technical design discussions and produce clear design documents for changes that span multiple services and teams
Drive the implementation of large features from design through rollout, including the migration and backfill work that real systems require
Partner with the on-call rotation to turn recurring toil and incident findings into automation and better signal
The Right Fit:
7+ years of backend development in an enterprise environment, working in an object-oriented or systems language (Java, Rust, C++, C#, Go, or similar)
Experience designing automation frameworks or platforms that other engineers build on
Experience building large scale software systems running on thousands of servers
Experience building automation or tooling that other engineers depend on daily, whether internal platform services, operational tooling, or a deployment and configuration pipeline
Working knowledge of an observability stack (Prometheus, Grafana, OpenTelemetry, ELK, Datadog, or equivalent), including instrumenting a service and designing alerts people trust
Strong Linux fundamentals and comfort operating in a bare-metal or hybrid environment rather than a fully managed cloud
Professional experience incorporating AI-assisted development tools (Gemini, Cursor, Claude Code, or similar)
Comfortable with all aspects of the software development lifecycle, including design, implementation, testing, and rollout
Exhibits curiosity and seeks to understand before offering solutions
Communicates proactively in a remote environment by keeping the team informed, surfacing blockers early, and moving work forward
Applies analytical thinking to ambiguous problems
Bonus points for:
Proficiency in Java
Experience with configuration management or infrastructure-as-code tooling (Ansible, Salt, Puppet, Chef, Terraform)
Experience designing SLOs and error budgets, or reducing alert noise on a fleet running at scale
Experience with time-series databases and query languages such as PromQL
Experience automating hardware lifecycle work: burn-in, failure detection, drive replacement, decommissioning
Experience with discovering and implementing performance improvements, including CPU and IO
Understanding of Linux internals and file systems
Familiarity with hard drive performance and optimization, including host-managed SMR
Experience building and interpreting models, dashboards, or reports
Required for all Backblaze Employees:

You bring sound judgement to the highest-impact issues, while setting the global frameworks, standards, and tools that let the wider business manage routine matters with confidence and consistency.
This is a functional leadership role with no direct reports, suited to someone who leads through expertise, influence, and delivery rather than headcount. You will set the direction for global employment legal support, work closely with regional Legal teams and other REAL (Risk, Ethics, Advocacy and Legal) specialists, and personally take on the matters that call for deep experience and judgement. You will also partner with Employee Relations on the legal dimensions of sensitive investigations and employee matters, complementing their operational expertise with strategic legal advice.
This role reports to the SVP/EGM Legal and can be based in San Mateo, Melbourne or Sydney.
WHAT YOU'LL DO
- Partner with PX leadership and senior business leaders on workforce strategy, organisational design, restructures, reward, senior employee matters and cross-border initiatives.
- Provide clear, practical advice on global employment and labour law, including investigations, performance management, discrimination and harassment, contracts, policies, disputes and regulatory matters.
- Set and own Xero's global employment legal strategy, risk framework, standards, escalation paths, playbooks and self-service resources.

SUCCESS LOOKS LIKE

- Xero has clear, scalable and practical global employment frameworks.
- Complex employment risks are identified early and managed consistently.
- Legal support is technology-enabled, using AI tools and self-service modalities where appropriate.
- External counsel is used strategically, with stronger internal capability and better cost control.
WHAT YOU'LL BRING
Essential
- Substantial international employment experience and proven experience supporting labour and employment in a global organisation, advising across multiple jurisdictions and operating effectively across regions and time zones.
- Experience in New Zealand, Australia, the United States and the United Kingdom is highly desirable.
- Deep expertise in global employment and labour law, including complex investigations, disputes, restructures and workforce strategy.
- Experience directing others’ work without direct reports, and influencing without formal authority.
- A track record of advising senior PX/HR leaders and business executives as a strategic partner.
- Strong judgement, commercial awareness and the ability to explain complex issues in plain language.
- Experience managing external employment counsel and building scalable legal processes and resources.
- The ability to influence without formal authority, and to roll up your sleeves and do the work personally.
Strongly preferred
- Breadth beyond employment law, such as litigation, transactional work or corporate governance. You are a T-shaped generalist, able to step into work outside your core area.
- Experience in a mid-market technology company of a similar size to Xero, or another fast-moving global business.
- An interest in using data, technology and AI to improve legal support.
WHERE AND HOW YOU CAN WORK
This role can be based in San Mateo, California, Melbourne or Sydney. This role is based in Sydney or Melbourne with a flexible hybrid working setup, spending 1 to 2 days per week in the local office to connect and collaborate.

Depending on the client, your scope may include email and SMS marketing, lifecycle automation, retention strategy, subscription growth, customer journeys, experimentation, and cross-functional team leadership.
Key responsibilities
Own lifecycle and retention strategy across email, SMS, subscription, and other customer touchpoints based on business needs.
Analyze customer, campaign, retention, and revenue data to identify opportunities and determine what should be tested or optimized.
Develop and execute experiments around offers, messaging, segmentation, customer journeys, subscription conversion, retention, and lifecycle engagement.
Build and optimize lifecycle programs, including campaigns, automated flows, onboarding, post-purchase, winback, cancellation/save journeys, and other retention initiatives.
Translate data and customer behavior into clear strategic recommendations and actionable plans.
Own performance against key business outcomes such as revenue, retention, customer lifetime value, subscription take rate, churn, or lifecycle program performance.
Work directly with clients, founders, or senior stakeholders to present performance, recommendations, and strategic priorities.
Lead and coordinate cross-functional teams including copywriters, designers, project managers, developers, and other marketing specialists.
Provide clear briefs, direction, feedback, and quality control to ensure execution aligns with strategy and brand requirements.
Troubleshoot lifecycle marketing, CRM, subscription, or customer journey issues and provide practical solutions.
Identify opportunities to improve processes, systems, and workflows, including the use of AI and automation where appropriate.
Monitor account/customer health and proactively identify risks, performance gaps, and opportunities for improvement.
Help build scalable playbooks, processes, and best practices that improve lifecycle and retention performance across the business.
Requirements
5+ years of experience in lifecycle marketing, retention marketing, CRM, growth marketing, email/SMS marketing, subscription growth, or a closely related field.
Strong understanding of DTC/ecommerce, consumer, subscription, or digital businesses and how customer retention contributes to revenue and profitability.
Proven experience using data to make strategic marketing or growth decisions rather than simply executing predefined campaigns.
Strong experience with lifecycle marketing platforms such as Klaviyo or comparable CRM/marketing automation tools.
Hands-on understanding of customer segmentation, automated journeys/flows, retention programs, experimentation, and performance optimization.
Experience owning measurable business outcomes such as revenue, retention, churn, LTV, conversion, subscription growth, or lifecycle performance.
Strong analytical skills and the ability to translate performance data into clear recommendations and next actions.
Comfortable working directly with clients, founders, CMOs, or senior stakeholders and communicating recommendations with confidence.
Strong project ownership and organizational skills, with the ability to manage multiple priorities without losing attention to detail.
Able to work cross-functionally and direct or collaborate with creative, project management, development, and marketing teams.
Strong written and verbal English communication skills suitable for client-facing work.
Self-directed, commercially minded, proactive, and comfortable operating in fast-moving environments.
Strong attention to detail and ownership mentality; you check your own work and take responsibility for outcomes, not just assigned tasks.
Experience using AI tools such as ChatGPT or Claude to improve marketing workflows, analysis, content development, or operational efficiency is a plus.
Benefits
Competitive USD compensation based on experience and client requirements.
Remote flexibility – work from anywhere while collaborating with international teams.
Opportunities to work with international companies across ecommerce, DTC, subscription, and digital businesses.
